The Risk Of The Pandemic: Covid-19s Effect On Risk And Protective Factors, Stephanie Willis
Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
Depression and Anxiety are mental health problems that affect the way a person thinks or feels. 36.4% of college students are affected by depression in their time at university and 41.6% of students are affected by anxiety. There are a variety of risk and protective factors that can contribute to higher or lower levels of mental health problems. Two of the more common factors are the amount of social interaction and financial stability. Covid 19 is a virus that has affected the health of many individuals. The virus has caused a global pandemic and in itself is an uncontrollable event. …

2020 Celebration Of Scholarship, Creativity, And Engagement, Todd Bruns, Beth Heldebrandt
Programs
The 2020-2021 academic year is truly extraordinary and higher education’s new, hopefully temporary, normal began on rather short notice in Spring 2020. While our environment has changed, we, as a shared community, are pleased that the important work of faculty continues and evolves as faculty broaden and redefine the boundaries of scholarship, creativity, and innovation in accelerating hybrid and remote environments. And, as new forms and strategies for scholarship and creativity emerge, the core principles of faculty life and student learning remain central to the mission of Eastern Illinois University.
For that reason, our faculty, department chairs, college deans, the …

Cyberchondria And Health Anxiety During The Covid19 Pandemic, Macey Grisso
Cyberchondria And Health Anxiety During The Covid19 Pandemic, Macey Grisso
Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an increase in mental health issues/problems. This research sought to assess whether cyberchondria during the pandemic resulted in an increase in health anxiety levels. A total of 45 participants from Longwood University completed either survey A, which contained a 6 item cyberchondria measure and the 18 item Short Health Anxiety Inventory (SHAI), or survey B which contained a modified version of the cyberchondria measure and the SHAI. Survey B was modified to explicitly mention COVID-19 in the items. Our results found no difference in health anxiety levels between the two participants and an additional …

An Exploration In Health Behavior: Conformity And Mask Usage, Kathryn Bates, Robert J. Rodenbaugh, Autumn Wiesner
Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
Since the COVID-19 pandemic has started, preventative health behaviors have been encouraged as the way to beat this virus. In addition to increasing handwashing, face coverings or masks have become a part of our daily lives. It is important to understand when people are most likely to wear a mask in order to be able to help encourage everyone to partake in this behavior. We looked at the effects conformity had on mask usage. In a survey, we described a scenario with different numbers of people in a group wearing a mask and asked the participants to decide if they …

Relationship Between Big 5 Personality Traits And Covid-19 Health-Related Behaviors, Kelly Higgins, Alyssa Martin
Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
The Big 5 personality traits are typically assessed in order to understand the behavior of individuals. The major traits are extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience (McCrae & John, 1991). Health-related behaviors regarding COVID-19 include wearing masks and properly social distancing (CDC, 2020a, CDC, 2020b). Previous research examined the relationship between the Big 5 personality traits and either mask use or social distancing and concluded that there were correlations between personality and the likelihood that participants would engage in COVID-19 precautionary behaviors (Zajenkowski, Jonason, Leniarska, & Kozakiewicz, 2020, Aschwanden et al., 2020, Carvalho, Pianowski, & Goncalves, 2020, Abdelrahman, …

Research Discipline Skeletons: The Librarian’S Bridge To Subject Knowledge, Jenn Monnin
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Purpose: In this project, a structured research discipline skeleton was created and applied with the intent to help librarians create an introductory knowledge of how to research in a discipline in which they have no formal training.
Brief Description: A working research discipline skeleton was created as part of the librarian’s MLIS practicum in 2017, and was put into practice when the librarian entered the health science librarianship profession two years later. This skeleton was created through a multidisciplinary lens, and included broad categories for gathering relevant information all in one place, with the intention to update the document as …

Months Into The Covid-19 Pandemic, Community Health Centers Report Signs Of Improvement, But Face Financial Uncertainty, Jessica Sharac, James Hernandez, Feygele Jacobs, Peter Shin
Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative
Executive Summary:
This policy brief reports on the COVID-19 experience of the nation’s community health centers over a six-month period, utilizing data from the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA’s) weekly Health Center COVID-19 Survey from April 3rd, 2020 to October 2nd, 2020. The data demonstrate that community health centers were immediately responsive to the public health crisis, initiating diagnostic testing for the COVID-19 virus, and adapting care such as telehealth to address patient needs. However, with visits down overall and limited financial relief, the pandemic has taken an enormous financial toll on health centers. Cumulative patient revenue losses over …

At the end of May, the third month of a shelter-in-place order in the counties of the San Francisco Bay Area, protests erupted daily in Oakland (California) following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. After a spree of early looting, the businesses along Oakland’s main corridors—many still closed to the public today, in November—had boarded up their windows leaving a ready canvas for a host of street artists and muralists to make their mark. The protest works that emerged are both beautiful and politically fraught, exposing some of the most sensitive social and economic divisions in the US. With …

Multiple Religious Belonging: Russian Reflections, Elizabete Taivāne
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Russian experts in Religious Studies are not acquainted with the notion of multiple religious belonging. Gradually, they are becoming more aware of contact and interrelation among different cultures and religious traditions. They question whether new synthetic forms of religiosity, which combine aspects of Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc., are possible and what the result of such a synthesis is. A few arguments in favor of exclusivity by prominent Russian experts in religious studies are touched on in this paper. One of the most popular is the incompatibility of different cultural paradigms and anthropological patterns.

Growing Collaborative Outreach Efforts To Support The Well-Being Of Communities, Jessica Kohout-Tailor, Lili Klar

Libraries of all types provide outreach efforts for their patrons to reduce stress and promote well-being. Public, school, and academic libraries often partner with external entities to provide yoga, therapy dogs, and other creative activities for their patrons. Although collaboration is expected in public, school, and academic libraries, how to collaborate and/or grow collaborative efforts is lacking in the library literature. A former public library employee and a former school librarian came together to pilot a de-stressing program for students at their academic library and each semester have continued to grow their collaborative efforts with partners on and off-campus. Strategies …

We examine whether changes in perceived norm of dishonesty can offset the effects of changes in benefit from the dishonest action. We find partial support for the hypothesis in laboratory experiments on lying behavior in a cheap-talk sender-receiver game, conducted in two countries. In the experiments, we vary benefit from lying and shift senders’ norm perception by providing them information on lying from prior sessions. The findings suggest that senders adjust their perceived norm as expected, but they respond to norm in a somewhat self-serving manner. Specifically, when benefit from lying is lowered but senders are induced to believe in …

Attachment between mother and child is an affective bond that is important to maintain in a family. For working mothers, the device is one solution to maintain attachment to their children. This research aims to describe the attachment system in children aged 2-3 years through the device and the application of the attachment system to fulfill the developmental tasks of the child. The articles are arranged based on qualitative research with descriptive methods. Although the attachment system that was built was adapted to the use of the device, but working mothers always maintain the quality of their relationship by interacting …

The Role Of Bus Stop Features In Facilitating Accessibility, Keith Bartholomew, Ja Young Kim, Divya Chandrasekhar, Reid Ewing, Arlie Adkins, Samuel Jensen
TREC Final Reports
Although transit decision-makers and riders generally favor improving bus stops by adding shelters, benches, and similar features, it is unclear the impact such features have on transit demand and there has been little research that measures these impacts. This study examines the link between stop improvements and changes in stop-level boardings on scheduled-service buses and in ADA paratransit demand in the Salt Lake City, UT, metropolitan area between 2014 and 2017. The study also investigates current bus stop improvement practices of leading transit agencies nationwide. The study uses a number of quantitative and qualitative techniques, including propensity score matching, propensity …

The Three-Legged Stool Of Voter Engagement, Addie Sandler, Mary E. Hylton, Jason Ostrander, Tanya R. Smith
School of Social Work Faculty Publications
Disparities in voter turnout have increased significantly over the past four decades. Members of historically oppressed groups, those who are low-income, and or who have lower levels of education vote at significantly lower rates than white, wealthy and or more educated community members. These disparities correlate directly to political power and the eventual allocation of resources by elected officials. Therefore, eliminating these disparities through targeted voter engagement with client groups is particularly important for the profession of social work. This article describes the conceptualization of voter engagement as a three-legged stool, consisting of voter registration, regular voting, and basing voting …

Determining The Impacts Of Exercise Participation On Disaster Response, Tanya Jean Hockett
Determining The Impacts Of Exercise Participation On Disaster Response, Tanya Jean Hockett
Masters Theses
There are many opinions surrounding the importance and effectiveness of emergency exercises and their influence on the response phase of emergency management. Understanding how exercises affect emergency response operations can help training and exercise programs enhance the structure and implementation of meaningful, strategic exercises. However, there is limited research available to validate this. This qualitative study analyzed the responses of 106 survey participants and found that exercise participation positively impacted the ability of individuals to respond to incidents and disasters. By analyzing and categorizing a series of open-ended responses, it was determined that the most important benefit of exercise participation …
Identifying The Universals Of Death: An Interpretive Analysis Of Mortuary Ritual In Ancient Egypt And Modern America, Sarah Snare
Identifying The Universals Of Death: An Interpretive Analysis Of Mortuary Ritual In Ancient Egypt And Modern America, Sarah Snare
Senior Theses
This project compares mortuary practices in ancient Egypt and modern America in an effort to identify cross-cultural consistencies in the treatment of the dead. An analysis of the meaning and motivations behind these rituals reveals that they serve similar functions in both societies. Death provokes intense emotions of grief and long periods of mourning, which can debilitate the people who knew the deceased and even the society itself. Therefore, to promote survival of individuals and the community, mortuary rituals must address these disturbances. Focusing on ancient Egypt and modern America, this study finds that mortuary practices function to restabilize society …

Predictors Of Perceived Social Support During The Covid-19 Pandemic Among College Students At The University Of South Carolina, Erin Godfrey
Senior Theses
Introduction: The emergence of COVID-19 has rapidly transformed the framework of our world in immeasurable ways. Social distancing and online learning have seemingly had a negative effect on students’ mental health amidst the rising stress of life during a global pandemic. Higher levels of perceived social support have been shown to have a buffering impact on the negative effects of stress. Therefore, the present study seeks to investigate how these effects differ among college students during their return to school in the Fall of 2020.
Method: A convenience sample of 257 students from the University of South Carolina …

In the last decade, there has been growing interest in Vehicular Ad Hoc NETworks (VANETs). Today car manufacturers have already started to equip vehicles with sophisticated sensors that can provide many assistive features such as front collision avoidance, automatic lane tracking, partial autonomous driving, suggestive lane changing, and so on. Such technological advancements are enabling the adoption of VANETs not only to provide safer and more comfortable driving experience but also provide many other useful services to the driver as well as passengers of a vehicle. However, privacy, authentication and secure message dissemination are some of the main issues that …
