Benefits From Laguna Lake: Perspective Of Small Fisher Households, Rosalina Palanca-Tan
Benefits From Laguna Lake: Perspective Of Small Fisher Households, Rosalina Palanca-Tan
Economics Department Faculty Publications
Fishing is considered to be the most important among the many uses of Laguna Lake, the largest lake in the Philippines and second largest in Southeast Asia. Using primary data gathered through focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and a household survey together with secondary data on revenue and cost estimates for aquaculture and catch fisheries, this paper discusses the lake___s role in the economic life of two fishing communities located along the shoreline. The study, which uses a microscopic lens to look at issues from the perspective of small fisher households instead of from that of policymakers and non-government …
Assessing Implicit Leadership And Followership Theories, Daniel Bashore
Assessing Implicit Leadership And Followership Theories, Daniel Bashore
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Implicit Leadership and Followership Theories (ILTs and IFTs, respectively) are individuals’ schemas composed of attributes that characterize leaders and followers. ILTs and IFTs are commonly measured through direct measures, however, researchers have questioned the validity of popular direct measures. With better and more parallel measures, we can examine the extent to which individuals think about leaders and followers as similar or dissimilar. Also, although substantial research has examined predictors of explicit leadership and leaders’ behavior, little research has attempted to examine antecedents of implicit leadership or followership. Using a sample of working adults (N = 243), the current study created …
Game Of Survival: External Actors' Support For Separatists, Joshua C. Underwood
Game Of Survival: External Actors' Support For Separatists, Joshua C. Underwood
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
This research develops a novel model for external actors’ support for separatists.Three variables measuring external actors’ support are identified through two case studies, Kosovo Liberation Army and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, with an emphasis on Military Aid’s impact. The variables are then applied to a quantitative analysis of external actors’ support in a dataset of 75 observations during the years 1991-2020, utilizing the Uppsala Conflict Data Program External Support Dataset. The findings for this research show that Military Aid and Moral Support improve the probability of survival for a separatist group. A deeper analysis reveals that military aid among …
The Equivalency Of Digital And Paper-Based Administration Of The Wechsler Intellegence Scale For Children-Fifth Edition With Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Students, Kenneth Reimer
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
This study explored the equivalence of the digital and paper-based version of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, 5th Edition (WISC-V) with deaf and hard-ofhearing children. There are a number of psychological tests being administered using both paper and digital formats. There is currently no literature on the validity of using these new digital tests with deaf and hard-of-hearing children. This study used a repeated measures design in which deaf and hard-of-hearing participants took the Figure Weights and Matrix Reasoning subtests of the WISC-V in counterbalanced order. The study found no format effect for the Figure Weights subtest with this …
Do Cognitive Distortions And Coping Skills Predict Scar Acceptance And Body Esteem In Women With Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators Or Pacemakers?, Nora Brier
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine whether cognitions and coping skills predict scar acceptance and body esteem in women 18 years and older with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) or pacemakers. A convenience sample of 272 individuals responded to a Facebook post. The measures were a demographic questionnaire, the Social Problem Solving Inventory-Revised (Short) (SPSI-R:S), the Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults, the Patient Scar Assessment Questionnaire (PSAQ), the Florida Patient Acceptance Survey, and the Inventory of Cognitive Distortions (ICD). Pearson correlation coefficient results revealed a moderate negative correlation between Negative Problem Orientation (NPO) and Body Esteem (Weight), …

Why Them: The Informal Caregiver's Transition To A Cancer Diagnosis, Rebecca Hoppe, Marcia A. Winter, Tara A. Albrecht
Graduate Research Posters
Background: Hematologic malignancies (HM) are life-threatening cancers associated with high mortality, numerous symptoms, and lengthy hospitalizations. Informal caregivers (family or friend; IC) of adults with various diseases experience negative quality of life and poor psychological well-being. However, there is scant research exploring the IC experience.
Objective: To learn how ICs adapt to patients’ diagnosis of HM and their caregiver role.
Methods: The current study used a qualitative descriptive design to analyze the semi-structured interview responses from ICs (N=28) within six weeks of the patients’ HM diagnosis. A content analysis was conducted to generate common themes.
Findings: Several themes emerged related …
Beyond The Neighborhood: Defining Membership In Diverse Community Contexts, Brad Forenza, Brian Dashew, Diana Cedeño, David T. Lardier
Beyond The Neighborhood: Defining Membership In Diverse Community Contexts, Brad Forenza, Brian Dashew, Diana Cedeño, David T. Lardier
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The purpose of this research is to form an overarching definition of community membership that encompasses all community contexts. Utilizing qualitative interviews with 102 members of five known community contexts (communities of action, circumstance, interest, place, and practice), the authors use cross-case analysis to explore common, transcendent themes of membership. Three takeaways emerge: first, that individuals identify with communities to address personal needs but come to see social benefits; second, that individuals join communities to deepen existing relationships, but develop new ones; and third, that through engagement, individuals strengthen a sense of self that is unique to community context. Through …

The Application Of The Food Safety Modernization Act’S Produce Safety Rule For Produce Auctions, Mari Schroeder
The Application Of The Food Safety Modernization Act’S Produce Safety Rule For Produce Auctions, Mari Schroeder
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
Produce is a high-risk commodity that is associated with numerous foodborne outbreaks each year. The Food Safety Modernization Act’s Produce Safety Rule was designed to address these issues by requiring farms that grow, harvest, package, and/or hold produce to comply with science-based minimum guidelines. However, with the revival of the local food movement there is a subsequent flux in alternative food networks that handle produce but are not covered by this rule. Produce auctions represent only a fraction of these alternative food networks but are the focus of this study because of their interaction with the Plain community whose relationship …
Piecing Together Coalition War: Threat, Politics, And Coalition Structure, Stephen Joiner
Piecing Together Coalition War: Threat, Politics, And Coalition Structure, Stephen Joiner
Theses and Dissertations--Political Science
Military coalitions are both a common feature of interstate warfare and an example of the highest level of cooperation between states. Despite their tremendous importance in international relations, military coalitions remain poorly understood. This project investigates critical questions related to coalition structures, and uses quantitative and qualitative methods to show that both the threat and political opportunity facing coalitions helps to determine the shape of their structures. This project utilizes a dataset of all coalition wars since 1816, as well as case studies of six coalitions to investigate these relationships. Key contributions include novel theoretical arguments and the findings that …

Transitioning from high school to the next phase of life can be especially challenging for youth with intellectual and other developmental disabilities (IDD). Federal mandates are in place to provide individualized transition services to students with disabilities up to age 22; however, there is variability in the location of service delivery. A growing number of school districts have partnered with institutions of higher education (IHE) in an effort to enhance postsecondary education (PSE) opportunities for individuals with IDD who are between the ages of 18-21. While there are some differences in PSE programs, the core foundational component is constant across …

"We Would Ride Safely In The Harbor Of The Future": Historical Parallels Between The Existential Threats Of Yellow Fever And Sea Level Rise In New Orleans And Norfolk, Morris W. Foster, Emily E. Steinhilber
Division of Research and Economic Development Faculty & Staff Publications
The 19th century experiences of Yellow Fever epidemics in New Orleans and Norfolk present historical parallels for how those cities, and others, are experiencing existential threats from climate change and sea level rise in the 21st century. In particular, the 19th century ?Sanitary Reform? movement can be interpreted as a model for challenges facing 21st century ?Climate Resilience? initiatives, including denialism and political obfuscation of scientific debates as well as tensions between short-term profit and the cost of long-term infrastructure investments and between individualism and communitarianism. The history of Sanitary Reform suggests that, at least in the U.S., Climate Resilience …

Undergraduate Student Perspectives On Textbook Costs And Implications For Academic Success, Lucinda Rush Wittkower, Leo S. Lo
Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
To provide more affordable course content to our students and faculty, local data on how students perceive textbook expenses and how the costs impact student success would be necessary in order to advocate to faculty and other stakeholders. This survey, conducted at a mid-sized research public institution, aims to explore student perceptions of textbooks and how these perceptions influence academic success. The results reveal that students feel that the cost of required textbooks is unreasonable and that students are more likely to purchase required textbooks for in-major classes than for elective or general education courses. The most common means of …

Prior Discipline And Performance Among Police Officers: Does Organizational Fairness Matter?, Richard Helfers, Paul D. Reynolds, Jon Maskaly
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations
Using a survey of police officers (n=1080) in a southern state of the USA, this study examines how overall performance is influenced by organizational fairness and prior disciplinary actions. In particular, this study focuses on the relationship between organizational treatment and officers’ self-acknowledged engagement in more innocuous forms of negative workrelated behaviors, general task performance, and extra-role behaviors. Results suggest prior disciplinary actions and organizational treatment are related to officer performance. Our findings highlight fair treatment’s relationship to enhanced prosocial activities and reduced negative work behaviors. Of importance to police administrators, police officers’ fairness perceptions of the police organization appear …

Representaciones De La Identidad Neoleonesa En Los Spots De Las Campañas A La Gubernatura De Nuevo León De 2015representations Of Nuevo León’S Identity Within The Campaign Spots For The 2015 State Election, Xavier Moyssén Álvarez
Publications and Research
This article parts from the sociological model of voting behavior, according to which social characteristics deter-mine political preferences. It is proposed that regional identity, because of its socialized nature, might’ve had effects on the voting behavior of the 2015 Nuevo León election. This work isn’t focused on the result of the election, it rather intends to verify, through content analysis, the presence of elements belonging to Nuevo Leon’s identity within the campaign spots for the main candidates:Felipe de Jesús Cantú (PAN), Ivonne Álvarez García (PRI), and Jaime Heliodoro Rodríguez Calderón (independ-ent). Furthermore, we propose a theoretical explanation of the possible …
Investigating Metacognitive Fluency As A Judgment Cue In Choice Overload, Michael R. Ho
Investigating Metacognitive Fluency As A Judgment Cue In Choice Overload, Michael R. Ho
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Choice overload describes the finding that individuals report being less satisfied and defer choice more often when choosing from larger rather than smaller choice sets. Researchers have proposed various theoretical models to account for this phenomenon; however, these models have yielded conflicting results. Critically, little research has sought to identify the cognitive mechanism underlying choice overload. The present study reviews models of choice overload and offers a more parsimonious account of choice overload. More specifically, metacognitive fluency, or the subjective interpretation of choice difficulty, plays a critical role during choice and may account for conflicting results in current choice overload …
Improving Outcomes For Children Impacted By Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces): A Study Of Intervention Effectiveness Guided By Developmental Theory, Lisa Teachanarong Aragon
Improving Outcomes For Children Impacted By Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces): A Study Of Intervention Effectiveness Guided By Developmental Theory, Lisa Teachanarong Aragon
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) is the term often used to refer to a set of negative experiences occurring in childhood that hold high potential for inducing toxic stress and complex trauma in children (Felitti et al., 1998). Studies have shown that ACEs are common, often co-occur, and exhibit a strong dose-response relationship to many developmental outcomes across the lifespan (e.g., Anda et al., 2006; Blodgett, 2014; Dong et al., 2004; Metzler et al., 2017). As public awareness of ACEs, their prevalence, and their impact has spread, public interest in implementing effective prevention and intervention strategies has also increased (Donisch et …
The Use Of Graphic Conceptual Models In Theory-Driven Evaluation, Susana Marianne Bonis
The Use Of Graphic Conceptual Models In Theory-Driven Evaluation, Susana Marianne Bonis
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Theory-driven evaluation has been adopted by numerous philanthropic organizations and government agencies across the world. Many evaluators also have embraced elements of theorydriven evaluation, regardless of their approach to evaluation. In theory-driven evaluation, the beliefs or assumptions behind an intervention are made explicit and used to guide the evaluation. These may be based on the perspectives and experiences of stakeholders, social science theory, observation, and previous evaluation and research. A graphic conceptual model, often in the form of a logic model or theory of change, is commonly developed to show how an intervention is expected to lead to desired outcomes. …

Modern Artificial Intelligence: Philosophical Context And Future Consequences, Mark Kumleben
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This paper analyzes the state of modern artificial intelligence research from a philosophical perspective, in order to argue for interdisciplinary cooperation in building an effective AI research paradigm. I assess four different aspects of AI: its ability to perceive the world through pattern recognition, its ability to act in the world through reinforcement learning, its role in technological society as predicted by Heidegger’s theory of technology, and its future development into potential superintelligence. By connecting these to an unexamined theory of the human mind underpinning AI research, I seek to show the relationship between our understanding of natural minds and …

Latino Evangelicals: How Their Multiple Identity Influences Their Political Preferences, Noemi Hernandez Alexander
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The pews of the American Evangelical church are browning, and so is the Evangelical voting bloc. Latino immigrants are fueling the growth of the Evangelical church in America and Latinos have the potential to influence the Evangelical voting bloc writ large. However, we have a limited understanding of the political needs of the Latino Evangelical who identifies as an ethnic person and a religious person. As the discipline of political science attempts to predict, describe, or explain the political attitudes of Latinos, understanding the political preferences of the Latino Evangelical is essential. This study seeks to understand how race and …

A Technology Solution To Over The Counter Drug Issues, Allan Mugambi Gitobu
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Reading and comprehending the drug packaging information to guide the selection of an appropriate over-the-counter (OTC) drug is a common challenge given concerns of abuse and misuse, addiction, overmedication, and inability to select the drugs in cases where the guidance of a medical professional is not available. This research reviews data on OTC usage in the United States, reviews the process followed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the transition of drugs from prescription to nonprescription status, and highlights some risks and benefits of OTC medication. It reviews issues in OTC medication, including decision-making in selecting OTC medication, …

"May We Be Buried Alive Together": Towards An Intersectional Feminist True Crime Praxis, Alexandra White
Pomona Senior Theses
Most mainstream true crime narratives revolve around a corpse. It is usually the body of a woman. The body is most often white. Not always, but in the cultural imaginary, she is blonde. She comes from a good family. She was a sweet girl. What happened to her? While this question haunts the general public, it also animates true crime communities as the victim becomes a symbol of innocence, a site of spectacular violence, and evidence of the incomprehensible extreme of human behavior. The question brings (primarily) white, cis women true crime fans together in the name of fascination, fear, …

The 2020 U.S. Presidential Race: Mobilize The Base Or Persuade Swing Voters?, Jonathan Miller
Pomona Senior Theses
This thesis will attempt to determine the optimal election strategy for the Democratic nominee in the upcoming presidential election. As it currently stands, there are two primary schools of thought about the Democratic election strategy among political scientists and strategists, both of which are often framed as mutually exclusive. According to one theory, the Democratic candidate/campaign should prioritize persuasion and target undecided voters to garner their support. Policies such as the expansion of the Affordable Care Act and modest income tax increases on the wealthy are examples of policies that are often designed to garner support among undecided voters. The …
