Assessing A Two-Hit Model Of Schizophrenia: Prenatal Choline Deficiency And Induced Hypofunction Of Nmda Receptors In Male And Female Long Evans Rats, Samuel Gray, Samuel W. Gray
Honors Theses
Choline is an essential dietary nutrient essential to the development and function of the central nervous system. Prenatal choline deficiency alters hippocampal development as well as acetylcholine metabolism, leading to cognitive impairments and attentional and sensory processing deficits into adulthood. MK-801 is an NMDA receptor antagonist frequently used in rodent models of neuropsychiatric conditions, particularly schizophrenia. Acutely and sub- chronically, it causes hyperlocomotion and social withdrawal. One primary goal of the present study were to investigate prenatal choline deficiency induces a biological vulnerability to the motor deficits, anhedonia, and social impairment precipitated by low-dose sub-chronic MK-801 administration in adulthood. Another …
Executive Function Deficit As A Precursor To Memory Impairments In Hapoe4 Transgenic Rats, Kaitlin Mcmanus
Executive Function Deficit As A Precursor To Memory Impairments In Hapoe4 Transgenic Rats, Kaitlin Mcmanus
Honors Theses
The hApoE4 allele is one of the strongest genetic risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). It underlies amyloid-bdeposits and neurofibrillary tangles, the two hallmarks associated with AD pathology, and is subsequently associated with AD symptomology. Despite its importance, no rat animal studies to date use hApoE4 knock-ins. In addition to this deficit in the field of AD literature, the vast majority of AD studies focus on memory, even though executive function deficits may precede memory impairments in AD, and may be a predictor of AD development. Thus, the present study addressed these gaps in AD research by investigating the behavioral …

Food System Resilience In The Face Of Covid-19: A Study Of Maine’S Food Sovereignty Movement, Hania M. Lincoln Lenderking
Honors Theses
As the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the vulnerabilities in the United States’ industrialized food system, the need for a more resilient alternative is stronger than ever. In Maine, food sovereignty - the right of people to determine their own food system - has been enacted at the local level through the adoption of the Local Food and Community Self-Governance Ordinance (LFCSGO). Using unstructured interviews with leaders of Maine’s food sovereignty movement conducted prior to the pandemic, this study aims to link food sovereignty in Maine to the concept of food system resilience. Participants defined food sovereignty specifically in relation to …
Exploring Whether Contextual Factors Relate To The Hoped-For And Feared Possible Selves Of Latinx Youth, Stephanie M. Romo
Exploring Whether Contextual Factors Relate To The Hoped-For And Feared Possible Selves Of Latinx Youth, Stephanie M. Romo
Theses and Dissertations
Youth’s hopes and fears for their future (i.e., hoped-for and feared possible selves) are related to their academic and health behavior outcomes. Much of the literature on possible selves focuses on African-American and European-American youth. In a sample of 132 Latinx youth, the present cross-sectional study utilized widely-used measures (i.e., Possible Selves Questionnaire, Beliefs about Education, Youth Risk Surveillance Survey) to identify the content and characteristics (e.g., strategies, balance) of their possible selves; investigate the relationship between contextual factors (e.g., sex, immigrant status) and possible selves; and, explore whether possible selves predicted youth’s beliefs about education and sexual risk behaviors. …

An Evaluation Of Georgia Southern University Public Safety Department's Community Policing Program: A Residence Hall Partnership Program, Charles P. Bowen
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The Residence Hall Partnership Program (R.H.P.P.) is the first major department wide community policing effort by the Georgia Southern police department. This study is an evaluation of that program’s first year of implementation. The evaluation process consists of a series of two mostly quantitative surveys of the residence hall students and officers of the Georgia Southern police department. The first survey was distributed at the beginning of the program during the Fall 2019 semester, the follow-up survey at the end of the Spring 2020 semester. The theories being examined are that community policing programs will improve student’s perceptions of police, …

Older Workers In The Time Of Covid-19: The Senior Community Service Employment Program And Implications For Social Work, Cal J. Halvorsen, Olga Yulikova
Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging
It has long been the goal of many gerontological social work scholars to increase the ability and opportunity for people to be engaged in paid and unpaid work throughout the life course. Yet the COVID-19 pandemic is revealing and exacerbating the financial insecurity of many older adults. In this paper, we review information related to older workers and how they might be affected by this pandemic and its aftermath, paying particular attention to the most socioeconomically and physically vulnerable older workers. We also offer first-hand experiences from our careers working with and conducting scholarship on older workers, paying particular attention …

How Self-Employed Older Adults Differ By Age: Evidence And Implications From The Health And Retirement Study, Cal J. Halvorsen
Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging
Background and Objectives
There has been increased attention in recent years on self-employment in later life, with about 1 in 5 workers past of the age of 50 working for themselves. This study aims to build upon previous documentation of the characteristics of self-employed older adults by estimating how these characteristics vary by age.
Research Design and Methods
Using 7 waves of the Health and Retirement Study with a sample of more than 16,000 working older adults, this study considers how the association between self-employment and sociodemographic characteristics; indicators of human, social, and financial capital; and risk tolerance differ between …

Job Training And So Much More For Low-Income Older Adults: The Senior Community Service Employment Program, Cal J. Halvorsen, Olga Yulikova
Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging
An important anti-poverty program for older Americans is facing a serious problem: The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) was deemed “ineffective” by the Department of Labor. The department’s 2020 budget, in fact, proposes the program’s elimination. SCSEP, which places low-income adults aged 55 and older with multiple barriers to work in on-the-job training in nonprofit and public agencies while providing a modest stipend, has the goal of helping participants to transition into unsubsidized, gainful employment. Yet measures used to determine the program’s effectiveness focus solely on employment outcomes, ignoring important outcomes related to health and social engagement. This commentary …

Assessments Of Fit And Usability Of Work-Life Supports In The Context Of Diversity And Perceptions Of Fairness, Cal J. Halvorsen, Indrani Saran, Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes
Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging
There is a robust literature that examines outcomes associated with work-life supports. Scholars have considered the “fit” between employee needs and the supports available while others have examined the “usability”—or the potential consequences of using—work-life supports. In this article, we suggest that “fit” and “usability” could be related to both employees’ own demographic, social, and cultural identities, as well as perceptions of fairness at the workplace. While scholars have focused on organizational justice and workplace fairness for quite some time, the context of diversity—in its many forms—has rarely been included in this conversation or has simply been added as a …

An Analysis Of Excise Taxes On Wine In The United States, William A. Saunders
Honors Theses and Capstones
Excise taxes are a form of tax that are applied specifically to certain goods, and are charged by the wholesaler to the retailer; they are then usually passed onto the consumer through price increases. Throughout the history of the United States, this form of taxation has transformed and taken on a variety of different roles before arriving at its modern role; a tool to implement certain tax systems, such as the Pigovian system, as well as to influence consumer behavior. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the purpose of excise taxes on wine within the United States by …
The Relationship Between Social Media Engagement And Psychological Well-Being In College Students At The University Of New Hampshire, Emily G. D'Antonio
The Relationship Between Social Media Engagement And Psychological Well-Being In College Students At The University Of New Hampshire, Emily G. D'Antonio
Honors Theses and Capstones
Social media use has increased substantially in recent years, and for the college-aged population, social media is often the leading method of communication. Research indicates this reliance on digital connection could have a negative impact on the health of young adults (Bagroy et al., 2017). The college years are a time of personal growth and defining actions, yet can also be burdened by mental health issues related to stress, anxiety, and depression (Hunt & Eisenberg, 2010). Acknowledging these trends, the current study explores how college students’ specific frequency and intentionality while interacting on social media relates to their psychological well-being. …

The Cholera Crisis In Yemen: Case Studies On Vulnerability And Resilience In Sana'a, Al Hudaydah, And Ma'areb, Noor Albannein A. Al-Saad
Honors Theses and Capstones
The largest recorded cholera epidemic in history is happening right now in Yemen, a country which has reported over 2 million cases of cholera as of 2020. Yemen has a history of endemic cholera, but prolonged conflict in the country has led to deteriorating conditions that have triggered massive outbreaks of the disease. The purpose of this study is to investigate the direct and indirect causes of the cholera epidemic in Yemen by proposing factors that may confer vulnerability and resilience in Yemeni governorates. Case studies were constructed for three governorates: Sana’a and the inner municipality of Amanat Al Asimah; …
Understanding The Relationship Between Smartphone Addiction And Well-Being: The Mediation Of Mindfulness And Moderation Of Hedonic Apps, Murad Moqbel
Information Systems Faculty Publications
The advent of handheld devices such as smartphones has changed the way we connect, navigate, and entertain and has been recognized as a revolution in information and communication technologies (ICT). Despite the plethora of benefits of this new technology, concerns have been raised about the unintended adverse consequences to well-being in the form of addictive use. Past research has linked smartphone addiction to negative consequences, but it remains unclear how, why, and when (i.e., under what conditions) smartphone addiction, in turn, is related to well-being. This study attempts to fill this void by addressing these questions through the lens of …

The Group Questionnaire (GQ) is a measure recently developed by Krogel et al. (2013) for the evaluation of the therapeutic relationship in group. The GQ identifies a three-factor model of the relationship that allows to measure quality (Positive Bonding, Positive Working and Negative Relationship) and structure (member-member, member-leader and member-group), dimensions in group. This work shows the results of a first study on the Italian validation of the GQ. In this study the GQ was administered to 536 subjects from 32 non-clinical groups of undergraduate students. The cross-cultural validity of the GQ in the Italian population has been examined by …

Financialization And Everyday International Political Economy: Financial Inclusion(ทุนนิยมธุรกรรมการเงินและเศรษฐกิจการเมือง ระหว่างประเทศของชีวิตประจำวัน: การเข้าถึงการเงินของคนจน), Kalaya Chareonying
Journal of Social Sciences
This paper focuses on how financialization has permeated the everyday lives of ordinary people, particularly poor people in the global South through 'f inancial inclusion'. The conceptual framework of this paper bridges the concept of financialization with Everyday International Political Economy to study financial inclusion. It argues that financial inclusion is an economic development project where the state is an active agent in facilitating and mobilizing global financial corporations and international organizations, so that the poor embrace and adopt financialization and its financial logic. The financial inclusion project shapes and constructs the identitiesp of the poor to become financial subjects …

Green Criminology And Wildlife Traff Icking In Thailand(อาชญาวิทยาสิ่งแวดล้อมกับการลักลอบค้าสัตว์ป่า ที่เกิดขึ้นในไทย), Nanrapat Chaiakaraphong
Journal of Social Sciences
Green Criminology is a concept developed by Michael Lynch in 1997. At that time the natural environment and resources in the world were being threatened heavily by humans. Green Criminology sought to assess the harm caused by environmental offences so as to come up with solutions for humans, wild animals, the environment and the ecosystem. Importantly, wildlife trafficking in Thailand has become a crime that damages the country. So, this study aimed to investigate whether Green Criminology could be applied to explain the wildlife trafficking situation in Thailand, and how? Documentary research and in-depth interviews of key informants who were …

Journal of Social Sciences
This article examines the concept of basic income, its policy application in certain countries and the associated controversies in the midst of neo-liberalism. It employs a rights-based approach in examining the social protection system, seeing universal basic income as a socio-economic policy appropriate to all citizens and constituting the floor of social protection in line with the proposal made by the International Labour Organization (ILO). It argues that, in fact, in allocating benefits to target populations, attention should be paid to the provision of money and benefits without conditions. In sum, in the future, basic income needs to be considered …

People's Liberation Army Reforms: Implications For Xi's Leadership(การปฏิรูปกองทัพปลดแอกประชาชน: นัยต่อความเป็นผู้นำ ของสีจิ้นผิง), Kittipos Phuttivanich
Journal of Social Sciences
This paper argues that the People's Liberation Army reform under Xi Jinping contributes to the new power concentration of Chinese leadership, which is significantly related to the elimination of the Chinese presidential term limits in March 2018. The paper points out that 1) the president's position has become important in Chinese politics only since the late Deng Xiaoping's era with the attempt to institutionalize Chinese leadership; 2) there were serious problems in the relations between Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the People's Liberation Army (PLA) especially during Jiang Zemin's and Hu Jintao's era, which damaged Mao's principle of "party commands …
