A Patient-Centered Ethnographic Interview And Measurement Of Intelligibility In Spastic-Ataxic Dysarthria For People With Multiple Sclerosis, Courtney Marie Leppek
A Patient-Centered Ethnographic Interview And Measurement Of Intelligibility In Spastic-Ataxic Dysarthria For People With Multiple Sclerosis, Courtney Marie Leppek
Wayne State University Theses
Multiple sclerosis (MS) produces neurological impairments that are variable in duration and severity, and that are unique to each case of MS. In addition to variability of symptoms, the length of the MS diagnostic process often affects quality of life. In this mixed qualitative and quantitative study, we used ethnographic interviews to investigate the underlying thoughts and feelings of two very different individuals with MS and Spastic-Ataxic Dysarthria. The results contribute to the understanding of MS as a multi-faceted condition that has implications that are both internal and external to the person with MS. Further, the results reflect the clinical …
The Effect Of Threatened Masculinity On Men's Perceptions Of Women's Refusals And Their Willingness To Continue An Unwanted Sexual Advance, Mollie Colleen Mcdaniel
The Effect Of Threatened Masculinity On Men's Perceptions Of Women's Refusals And Their Willingness To Continue An Unwanted Sexual Advance, Mollie Colleen Mcdaniel
Wayne State University Theses
Men’s sexual aggression against women is distressingly common. Some men use sexual aggression as a way to reassert their masculinity when they have been rejected by a woman (Malamuth, 1995). Some men who perpetrate aggression may not intentionally overlook women’s refusals to unwanted sexual advances, rather they might not perceive a refusal as resistance at all. Social perception research has shown that people’s perceptions are influenced by their motivations, allowing them to only perceive what they wish to see. Masculinity threat may be one such motivation. A sample of 106 men completed an experimental survey with a 2 (threatened masculinity …

Feelings Of Incompleteness As Linking Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder And Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Examination Using A Computerized Approach-Avoidance Task, Sarah R. Lee
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation examines the construct of incompleteness as it relates to both Obsessive-
Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Incompleteness is a
construct which was developed to describe symptoms of OCD which are not accounted for using
a traditional, harm-avoidance and fear-based conceptualization. Unlike harm-avoidance based
OCD, in which an individual engages in compulsions to prevent some feared outcome,
individuals with incompleteness-based OCD engage in compulsions to resolve an internal feeling
that their experience is uneven, asymmetrical, incomplete, or not-just-right.
Recently, researchers have begun to examine feelings of incompleteness in the context of
other disorders, such as ASD. …
Peer Social Support In The Classroom, Dennis Paul Debeck
Peer Social Support In The Classroom, Dennis Paul Debeck
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Social support in the classroom is an under-researched area of instructional
communication literature. Cutrona and Russell’s (1990) five dimensions of social support were
used as a framework to investigate peer social support. Those five dimensions were expected to
predict engagement, classroom participation behavior, attitude towards attending class, and
identification with the university. Participants (n=222) were asked to respond to measures that
were developed to assess the five social support types and the four criterion variables. All the
types of social support were found to be positively correlated with the criterion variables when
the zero-order correlations were examined. It was also …
Towards A Resilient Future: Federal Policies For Adapting The U.S. Coasts To Climate Change, Samuel Horowitz
Towards A Resilient Future: Federal Policies For Adapting The U.S. Coasts To Climate Change, Samuel Horowitz
Pitzer Senior Theses
Climate change is projected to have a devastating impact on the American coast, yet coastal communities and states have largely failed to prepare for projected impacts. This is in large part due to a lack of resources. This thesis analyzes innovative federal policy mechanisms that will address the current gap between actions and forecasted impacts, and will make U.S. coastal communities more resilient in the face of climate change.
Present And Passionate: A Critical Analysis Of Asian American Involvement In The United States Environmental Justice Movement, Emily M. Ng
Pitzer Senior Theses
Communities of color are disproportionately exposed to toxins and pollution. The environmental justice movement addresses the greater health and environmental risks experienced by minority groups. Although Asian Americans are the fastest growing population in the United States, there is little known about their involvement in the movement. In this thesis, I further observe Asian American involvement in the United States environmental justice movement. By analyzing community case studies, I identify Asian American-specific mobilization challenges and strategies. Interviews with prominent Asian American environmental justice activists reveal activism and collective identity are connected, but vary greatly according to individualized Asian American experiences. …
Elevating Equity: Strategies From State-Level Clean Energy Standards In The United States, Spencer Burget
Elevating Equity: Strategies From State-Level Clean Energy Standards In The United States, Spencer Burget
Pitzer Senior Theses
I compare strategies for equity in state-level clean energy standards across the United States. I avoid adopting an explicit definition of equity because I do not attempt to evaluate the impacts of these policies. Rather, I analyze how different states are forging their own definitions of equity within their clean energy policy. Specifically, I present case studies of four early adopters that have championed equity in their clean energy transition. First, New Mexico offers a unique strategy for protecting displaced fossil fuel workers through power plant securitization. Next, California’s robust policy context demonstrates how to minimize the financial impact of …

Archaeologists often use near-surface geophysics or LiDAR-derived topographic imagery in their research. However, rarely are the two integrated in a way that offers a robust understanding of the complex historical palimpsests embedded within a social landscape. In this paper we present an integrated aerial and terrestrial remote sensing program at the Johnston Site, part of the larger Pinson Mounds landscape in the American MidSouth. Our work at Johnston was focused on better understanding the history of human landscape use and change so that we can begin to compare the Johnston Site with other large Middle Woodland (200 BC-AD 500) ceremonial …

Unconditional Quantile Regression Analysis Of Uk Inbound Tourist Expenditures, Abhijit Sharma, Richard Woodward, Stefano Grillini
Unconditional Quantile Regression Analysis Of Uk Inbound Tourist Expenditures, Abhijit Sharma, Richard Woodward, Stefano Grillini
Articles
Using International Passenger Survey (2017) data, this paper employs unconditional quantile regression (UQR) to analyse the determinants of tourist expenditure amongst inbound tourists to the United Kingdom. UQR allows us to estimate heterogeneous effects at any quantile of the distribution of the dependent variable. It overcomes the econometric limitations of ordinary least squares and quantile regression based estimates typically used to investigate tourism expenditures. However, our results reveal that the effects of our explanatory variables change across the distribution of tourist expenditure. This has important implications for those tasked with devising policies to enhance the UK’s tourist flows and expenditures.

Menus of the 21st Century
J.P. McMahon (an Irish Times contributor) has created a cool, unpretentious room where great flavours in wine and food can be enjoyed without having to pull up a table and tuck your knees under a white tablecloth. It's a sign of how far we've come that cooking of the standard the Tartare team maintain can be served in a relaxed bar setting. Deliciousness does not have to come with a side order of formality.

There are lots of Yotam wannabes who think a pomegranate seed and a squeeze of lime will cut it. Then there's a band of Irish chefs who worked for Yotam Ottolenghi's London restaurants and cafes and get that it's all about the best ingredients worked until they produce the best flavours. Richard Gleeson came home to Fethard to open Dooks, a brilliant addition to this lovely Tipperary town.

If Vanessa and Anna, the owners, had their way, there would be no seats in their restaurant, just a bar, and a sawdust-covered floor, where delicious small plates are casually served alongside fino and wine. Their Irish customers wanted sit-down dining, so they complied. The welcome is as large as the manu. They serve all the best tapas without the step count that would be clocked up to eat like this on a tapas strip in Spain.

Once this small-town pub got it's fame from a Saw Doctors song. Now it's known for the cooking of Steven Lane, the grandson of the original owner. Stevie and his wife, Amanda Fahy (who met working in the bar), turned the lights back on in Brownes in 2016, with a shoestring refurbishment to allow them to put all the fun into the food, bringing sweetness back into the sugar town that is Tuam.

Pi casually slid on to the Dublin Pizza scene last summer and within weeks had detonated a debate about whether it was the best pizza in the city - we were in the affirmative camp. Pizzaiola/owner Reggie White worked in an office before jacking it in to train with Darina Allen at Ballymaloe, and his obsession with pizza is evident from the first bite of the leoparded, 48 hour fermented base, with it punchy sun-ripened-tomato sauce and creamy, tangy Toons Bridge Fio de Latte on the most simple, perfect Margherita.

Etto was always going to be a hard act to follow, but owners Liz Matthews, Simon Barrett and chef Paul McNamara have made it look effortless. This Spanish-inspired restaurant feels more like Barcelona than Aungier Street, and the bar seating is some of the best in the city. The gildas (Spanish "lollipops" with guindilla peppers, anchovies and olives), chargrilled octopus and flan de queso are unmissable.

There's no place like Loam. Enda McEvoy is an ingredient nerd who makes it his business to get to know the people who grow, catch and farm his food. He treats every part of the food thoughtfully and is alway exploring ways to turn waste into taste, but not in a preachy way. Most diners won't even notice the quiet revolution he's staging behind the pass in a restaurant named after the rich crumbly soil that grows the best food.

The husband and wife team of Margaret and Joe Bohan specialise in plot to plate food at their Galway restaurant, sourcing as much produce as possible on their organic farm in Moycullen in Co Galway, for their head chef, Sylvain Gatay to cook with. On the farm they're expanding their growing patches to include vegetables that would otherwise be difficult or cost-prohibitive for them to source. Think padron peppers, yellow pear tomatoes and cucamelons, alongside garlic, kalette and celery, grown sustainably and organically from seed by the Bohans. Occasion dining with all it's props - the linen, the Frenchness, the heel-clicking precision service, the sterling-silver table scrapers - have been getting a bad rap in recent years as the trends rush towards informality.
