Dendroanthropological Applications In Adaptive Management: A Multi-Methodical Approach For Interpreting Cultural Landscape Change At Mvs-Yee-Se’-Ne, Brandy Alexandra Clark Jan 2020

Dendroanthropological Applications In Adaptive Management: A Multi-Methodical Approach For Interpreting Cultural Landscape Change At Mvs-Yee-Se’-Ne, Brandy Alexandra Clark

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis combined GIS analysis, archival research, and dendrochronological methods to provide a means for interpreting how the Mvs-yee-se’-ne cultural landscape has changed since the period of European contact circa 1850. By employing dendrochronological methods, a unique stand of Oregon white oak (Quercus garryana) was found to be present at Mvs-yee-se’-ne by at least 1809. Since 1850, factors such as American colonization, homesteading, mining, fire suppression, and logging have had an effect on cultural landscapes such as Mvs-yee-se’-ne regionally, but this research localized such effects in a site-specific context. Aerial imagery analysis conducted for this thesis documented extractive …

Living Rivers, Cosmopolitan Activism, And Environmental Justice In The Bengal Delta, Daniel Adel Jan 2020

Living Rivers, Cosmopolitan Activism, And Environmental Justice In The Bengal Delta, Daniel Adel

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis explores the social movements and civil society activism to protect the rivers that flow through Bangladesh—the cradle and terminal delta floodplain of the transboundary Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna river systems—, as well as ways to build regional cooperation and watershed democracy in South Asia. The research drew on four overarching fields of study: environmental justice, southern environmentalism, ecological nationalism, and environmental governance. These four bodies of scholarship helped address the overarching question: how are civil society organizations analyzing and responding to the water diversions and degradation of Bangladesh’s transboundary rivers? Semi-structured interviews were conducted with civil society organizations …

Retelling Narratives Of Eco-Memory: Settler Colonialism And Carceral Occupation Of The Jordan River, Megan Rose Awwad Jan 2020

Retelling Narratives Of Eco-Memory: Settler Colonialism And Carceral Occupation Of The Jordan River, Megan Rose Awwad

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

In this thesis, I retell and reclaim stories that have been shared and passed down within my family and family history in relation to our homeland, Palestine, and more specifically to the Jordan River. I argue that the construction of the dam in the 1960s on the Jordan River, by a zionist state, is an extension of both the settler colonial state and the treatment of the land/rivers as inherently linked with the treatment of Indigenous people. The carceral spaces and geographies settler states create are part of both the destruction of the land and the genocide Indigenous people experience. …

Increasing Diversity Among Women Entrepreneurs In High Growth High Tech Using Hbcu Female Academic Entrepreneurs, Clovia Hamilton Jan 2020

Increasing Diversity Among Women Entrepreneurs In High Growth High Tech Using Hbcu Female Academic Entrepreneurs, Clovia Hamilton

Technology & Society Faculty Publications

There is a concentrated number of potential women entrepreneurs of diverse races among faculty in the United States' Historically Black Colleges and Universities (known as HBCUs and are called 'Black Colleges' herein). This study describes the potential for developing university technology transfer in these Black Colleges as a strategy for increasing diversity among women entrepreneurs in high growth, high tech fields using female academic entrepreneurs. Currently, Black Colleges lag behind their peer non-Black Colleges in . technology transfer because historically they have been under, served and were originally established largely as teaching and blue-collar trade schools. Although Black female STEM …

Part 1: Covid-19 And The Commonwealth, Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University

State of the Commonwealth Reports

In January 2020, Virginia was focused on the continuing economic expansion and shortages of skilled labor in many areas of the Commonwealth. Now, as 2020 draws to a close, we face the prospects of a hard winter and a slow recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. We examine the impact of COVID-19 on Virginia and discuss how the pandemic has disproportionately impacted our Black or African American and Hispanic or Latino residents.

The Essence Of Hate And Love, Clark R. Mccauley Jan 2020

The Essence Of Hate And Love, Clark R. Mccauley

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

This chapter updates and extends ideas advanced by Royzman, McCauley, and Rozin in The Psychology of Hate. In particular, it builds on the work of Shand, who argued that hate and love are not themselves emotions but the occasions of experiencing many different emotions, depending on what is happening to the one hated or loved. The first section reviews four ways of getting to the meaning of hate. The second section stipulates a definition of identification and provides examples of the power of positive and negative identification in human affairs. The third section reviews ideas about what it means to …

Climate And Surging Of Donjek Glacier, Yukon, Canada, Ellyn M. Enderlin Jan 2020

Climate And Surging Of Donjek Glacier, Yukon, Canada, Ellyn M. Enderlin

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Links between climate and glacier surges are poorly understood but are required to enable prediction of surges and mitigation of associated hazards. Here, we investigate the role of snow accumulation, rain, and temperature on surge periodicity, area changes, and timing of surge initiation since the 1930s at Donjek Glacier, Yukon, Canada. Snow accumulation measured in three ice cores collected at Eclipse Icefield indicates that a cumulative accumulation of 15.5 ± 1.46 or 16.6 ± 2.0 m w.e. occurred in the ten to twelve years between each of its last eight surges, depending on ice motion spatiotemporal offset corrections. Although we …

Supporting Interests And Sharing Power: Insights From A Scottish Youth Program, Daniela Kruel Digiacomo

Information Science Faculty Publications

Light Up Learning (LUL) is a youth program in Scotland that supports young people in pursuing their curiosities and exploring their interests in a school-based informal learning setting. This article draws on interview and participant observation data to examine the social organization of teaching and learning activity within LUL. As a school-based program focused on supporting youth in pursuing their interests through the cultivation of a caring adult–youth relationship, LUL offers an empirical case that brings together insights from youth development and interest-driven learning research. Examination into the verbal and material interactions that shape adult–youth interactions yields insight into how …

[3 H]Dopamine Uptake Through The Dopamine And Norepinephrine Transporters Is Decreased In The Prefrontal Cortex Of Transgenic Mice Expressing Hiv-1 Transactivator Of Transcription Protein, Matthew J. Strauss, Bernadette O’Donovan, Yizhi Ma, Ziyu Xiao, Steven Lin, Michael T. Bardo, Pavel I. Ortinski, Jay P. Mclaughlin, Jun Zhu

Psychology Faculty Publications

Dysregulation of dopamine neurotransmission has been linked to the development of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND). To investigate the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon, this study used an inducible HIV-1 transactivator of transcription (Tat) transgenic (iTat-tg) mouse model, which demonstrates brain-specific Tat expression induced by administration of doxycycline. We found that induction of Tat expression in the iTat-tg mice for either 7 or 14 days resulted in a decrease (∼30%) in the Vmax of [3 H] dopamine uptake via both the dopamine transporter (DAT) and norepinephrine transporter (NET) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), which was comparable to the magnitude …

Effects Of Ethanol, Naltrexone, Nicotine And Varenicline In An Ethanol And Nicotine Co-Use Model In Sprague-Dawley Rats, Cassie M. Chandler, Sarah E. Maggio, Hui Peng, Kimberly Nixon, Michael T. Bardo Jan 2020

Effects Of Ethanol, Naltrexone, Nicotine And Varenicline In An Ethanol And Nicotine Co-Use Model In Sprague-Dawley Rats, Cassie M. Chandler, Sarah E. Maggio, Hui Peng, Kimberly Nixon, Michael T. Bardo

Psychology Faculty Publications

Background: As alcohol and nicotine use disorders are entwined, it may be possible to develop a single medication to treat both. We previously developed a model for ethanol (EtOH) and nicotine co-use in female selectively bred alcohol-preferring (P) rats. To model co-use in a genetically diverse population, we adapted the model to outbred Sprague-Dawley rats of both sexes and assessed the effect of drug pretreatments.

Methods: In phase 1, rats were trained in a 2-bottle choice between water and a sweetened or unsweetened EtOH solution in operant chambers. In phase 2, rats were trained in nicotine self-administration under an increasing …

Presence Of A Social Peer Enhances Acquisition Of Remifentanil Self- Administration In Male Rats, Rebecca S. Hofford, Paige N. Bond, Jonathan J. Chow, Michael T. Bardo

Psychology Faculty Publications

Background: Social peers influence human drug use at every stage of addiction. Using a dual-compartment apparatus that allows for limited social contact, recent work has shown that cocaine self-administration is enhanced when two rats are trained to self-administer at the same time compared to rats trained alone or trained in the presence of a saline self-administration control peer. The current study measured social influence on self-administration of the short-acting opioid remifentanil using a dual-compartment operant conditioning chamber.

Methods: Adult male rats were placed in one of five groups: (1) REMI-REMI group, in which both rats self-administered remifentanil; (2) REMI-SAL group, …

Vox Et Silentium Dei: A Socio-Cognitive Linguistic Theory Of Religious Violence, Tyler Everett Kibbey Jan 2020

Vox Et Silentium Dei: A Socio-Cognitive Linguistic Theory Of Religious Violence, Tyler Everett Kibbey

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

Contemporary research in the study of language and cognition frequently characterizes religious metaphors as either monoliths of experience or stable synchronic structures, if not both. In addition, by virtue of how the foundational theory of this paper, Conceptual Metaphor Theory, has been situated in the literature, pre-modern theist writing on figurative language has been largely ignored. This has resulted in a general application of Conceptual Metaphor Theory to religious language which characterizes religious experience as phenomenologically invalid with the contingent effect of contradicting the basic experiential nature of metaphor. Here, I account for these principal theoretical discrepancies through an exploration …

Ecological And Evolutionary Dynamics Of Elephant Rewilding, Lysanne Snijders Jan 2020

Ecological And Evolutionary Dynamics Of Elephant Rewilding, Lysanne Snijders

Animal Sentience

Baker & Winkler make a thought-provoking contribution to the discussion of what role captive animals could play in nature conservation and how we could get there through rewilding. There certainly is potential for captive Asian elephants, Elephas maximus, to become targets of conservation efforts, but there are also many questions: (1) How much do (behavioral) traits of captive-origin animals differ from their free conspecifics? (2) What predicts the likelihood and strength of social reintegration of captive animals into free populations? (3) How much of an Asian elephant’s functional role in the environment can captive animals still fulfill and how …

Bread And Circuses: Sports And Public Opinion In China, Dan Chen, Andrew W. Macdonald Jan 2020

Bread And Circuses: Sports And Public Opinion In China, Dan Chen, Andrew W. Macdonald

Political Science Faculty Publications

Sports victory constitutes an important part of propaganda in authoritarian states. The heavy state investment in sports industries and sports culture in China illustrates the political importance of sports. However, few studies have systematically examined the exact impact of sports propaganda on public opinion. Using a survey experiment conducted in two Chinese cities, this article finds that broadcast highlighting national sports achievements has significant positive effects on general satisfaction and compliance with the local governments. These results expand on the small but growing literature on the effects of sports on political opinions and help detail the specific ways in which …

Did Akhenaten's Founding Of Akhetaten Cause A Malaria Epidemic, Lisa Sabbahy Dr. Jan 2020

Did Akhenaten's Founding Of Akhetaten Cause A Malaria Epidemic, Lisa Sabbahy Dr.

Faculty Journal Articles

This paper presents and discusses evidence for changes in the environment that would have taken place at the site of Amarna, ancient Akhetaten, during the rapid building and populating of the city in the reign of King Akhenaten. The evidence suggests that the effect of the founding of this city, with all the consequences of a changed environment on both sides of the river, could have been responsible for a malaria epidemic. This scenario is backed up by the high prevalence of signs of malaria in the skeletal material from Amarna, as well as in the short-lived history of the …

Climate Translators: The Impacts Of Broadcast News On The Political Divide Over Climate Change In The United States, Dylan V. Macy Jan 2020

Climate Translators: The Impacts Of Broadcast News On The Political Divide Over Climate Change In The United States, Dylan V. Macy

Pitzer Senior Theses

In many instances, television news is the primary outlet through which the public gains knowledge on climate change. Both the perceived threat of climate change and American news media have grown politically divided since the 1980s. I make the argument that American news media influences the partisan divide over climate change. In addition to the political landscape of news media, focus on political events and figures in climate coverage further contributes to a partisan divide. Supporting these claims are research displaying how climate change news is processed in a partisan manner and a selection of three case study periods in …

The Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary: An Exploration Of Changing The Discourse On Conservation, Arielle Ben-Hur Jan 2020

The Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary: An Exploration Of Changing The Discourse On Conservation, Arielle Ben-Hur

Pitzer Senior Theses

In 2015, the Northern Chumash Tribal Council submitted a National Marine Sanctuary Nomination to establish the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary– a means by which to ensure the protection of one of the most culturally and biologically diverse coastlines in the world. On October 5, 2015, John Armor of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) responded to the nomination, adding it to the inventory of areas NOAA may consider in the future for national marine sanctuary designation.

In my thesis, I explore how the nomination of the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary acts as a platform from which Traditional …

Teaching Texting On A Smart Phone To Children And Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Jenna Gilder Jan 2020

Teaching Texting On A Smart Phone To Children And Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Jenna Gilder

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Children and adolescents diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have deficits in social communication ( Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders -5th edition, APA, 2013). These deficits are significantly pronounced when individuals with ASD attempt to engage in conversations. Due to advances in technology, children and adolescents are now conversing through computer mediated communication (CMC; Pew, 2015, 2018). Texting in particular is one popular form of CMC that may mitigate the non-verbal social skill deficits seen in individuals with ASD, such as eye contact and tone of voice. Despite the potential of texting and its' popularity as a CMC …

Exposome Factors: Exploratory Study Approach And The Role Of Persuasive Technology To Raise Awareness About The Exposome Concept, Abdulrahman Alzahrani Jan 2020

Exposome Factors: Exploratory Study Approach And The Role Of Persuasive Technology To Raise Awareness About The Exposome Concept, Abdulrahman Alzahrani

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Exposome is a new concept that emerged at the beginning of the 21st century to complement genome research. The exposome encompasses the entirety of a person’s environmental exposures from birth to death. This study focused on environmental rather than genetic factors that are related to chronic diseases. It had two phases. Phase 1 involved building a regression model aimed at investigating the influence of various indicators on cancer cases in Los Angeles County. The investigation of the potential correlation between the cancer cases based on census tract data and the exposome factors follows an exploratory approach. Multiple regression stepwise analysis …

Can Metacognitive Monitoring Ability Be Trained?, Erica Abed Jan 2020

Can Metacognitive Monitoring Ability Be Trained?, Erica Abed

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Low performers tend to greatly overestimate their performance on a task, but high

performers slightly underestimate their performance; the unskilled-unaware effect (Kruger & Dunning, 1999). Because assessment of one’s own skill (monitoring) impacts future decisions, such as selecting information to re-study (control), low performers may be disadvantaged in both what they know and what they are likely to learn. Although most research has attempted to reduce metacognitive errors in low performers by training cognitive ability (e.g., teaching them to perform better on a task), training metacognitive ability may be both more efficient and more likely to transfer to other tasks. …
