How Great Power Politics Influences Refugee Policy: Assessing The U.S. Foreign Policy Implications Of Differing Responses To The Venezuelan Migration Crisis In Colombia, Peru, And Brazil, Suhan M. Rosario
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Why are Venezuelan Migrants accepted in neighboring Colombia, but not in other countries in South America? It is true that Colombia and Venezuela are similar in language, culture, and customs, but this is true across the continent. There has been literature published on the size of the crisis, and where they are going. Here, I will assess why the Colombian government is more accepting of Venezuelan migrants, even when this is not popular in Colombia or any other country in South America.
My argument is that US foreign policy has caused Colombia to be more accepting of Venezuelans than neighboring …
The Impact Of Virtual Reality On Chronic Pain, Alexis Whitehead
The Impact Of Virtual Reality On Chronic Pain, Alexis Whitehead
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Chronic pain remains a prevalent problem across the United States. Chronic pain does not seem to have a function and relief of this symptom remains elusive for many sufferers. Virtual reality has been used as an adjunct therapy to decrease acute pain with promising results, but there is little research on whether virtual reality could be used as a successful intervention for those with chronic pain. Virtual reality has few side effects, so it warrants consideration for the treatment of chronic pain. There is growing evidence that there is potential for virtual reality to produce desired results with patients having …
Hedge Fund Investment In Initial Coin Offerings (Icos), Adam B. Wing
Hedge Fund Investment In Initial Coin Offerings (Icos), Adam B. Wing
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) came into worldwide attention in 2018, when over $11.6 billion flowed through them. The CME Group launched Bitcoin futures contracts in December 2017, giving large funds their first regulated exposure to digital assets. As digital assets move towards the mainstream of finance, institutional investors have followed. This study comparatively analyzes Hedge Fund investment in digital assets against that of other institutional investment firm types (Private Equity and Venture Capital) by analyzing their crypto holdings and rebuilding an equally weighted portfolio for each fund. Under these conditions, the study succeeds in finding significant differences between hedge fund …

Exploring The Effects Service Dogs Have On Veterans With Ptsd, Shelby E. Reeves
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental illness resulting from exposure to a traumatic event. Symptoms of PTSD vary, but those affected commonly experience nightmares, flashbacks, hypervigilance, and trouble sleeping; they may also avoid people or situations that trigger traumatic memories. It is estimated that PTSD affects about 10-30% of all United States veterans. Additionally, traditional treatment methods have an average dropout rate of 25% among military personnel. Inadequate PTSD symptom management may lead to depression, anxiety, suicidality, isolation, unstable relationships, and substance misuse. The purpose of this review is to examine the current research concerning the use of service …
Over Sexualization Of Women In The Media And Its Effect On Self-Objectification, Alaysia M. Herndon
Over Sexualization Of Women In The Media And Its Effect On Self-Objectification, Alaysia M. Herndon
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The current study examined the relationship between the sexualization of women in the media and its effects on women's self-objectification and sexual priming with sociodemographic variables as a mediator. It was hypothesized that (1) exposure to increased sexual content in music videos would positively correlate with increased sexual priming among viewers and (2) increased sexual priming among females would be associated with increased self-objectification and increased objectification of other women. Additionally, the current study aimed to examine sociodemographic factors and if they correlate to the impact of sexual priming on self-objectification and the objectification of other women. The results of …
Trait Anxiety And Other Personality Constructs As Predictors Of Negative Reactions To Quarantine And Social Isolation, Faith A. Ambrose
Trait Anxiety And Other Personality Constructs As Predictors Of Negative Reactions To Quarantine And Social Isolation, Faith A. Ambrose
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Former research has shown a strong relationship between anxiety and various negative reactions to trauma, including widespread traumatic events such as natural disasters, war, and pandemics. COVID-19 has been an ongoing, potentially traumatic event for individuals all over the world. Even individuals who have not experienced serious traumatic consequences because of the pandemic have likely had some negative experiences regarding the mandated quarantine and social distancing. This study seeks to find possible personality predictors for negative reactions, whether they be behavioral or cognitive. Participants completed several questionnaires that test personality constructs, including trait anxiety, need for affiliation, extraversion, and autonomy. …
Más Que Cubano: Linked Fate, Transnationalism, And Generational Differences Among Cuban Immigrants, Bryan Cruz
Más Que Cubano: Linked Fate, Transnationalism, And Generational Differences Among Cuban Immigrants, Bryan Cruz
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Latinos in the United States are a diverse group, and their growing presence and recent elections illustrate the importance of understanding and recognizing their distinct political identities. The political identity of Cuban immigrants has been understood as being an anomaly among Latino groups and is largely referred to as an outlier in research of Latin American immigration. The intent of this thesis is to explore the question of why some Latin American immigrants relate to a greater Latino identity. Linked fate is identified as a relevant concept that addresses the formation of group identity. From the literature, transnational connections and …

Physical Activity Moderates The Relationship Between Apoe4 Status And Working Memory: The Health And Retirement Study, Dalia T. El-Shafie
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between physical activity and working memory decline among older adults with APOE4 status. The APOE4 allele is currently the strongest predictor of risk for Alzheimer's disease and other related dementias. The publicly available data from the Health and Retirement Study was used to complete this Retrospective Longitudinal study. Three hypotheses were explored. H₁: It is expected that the presence of the APOE4 allele will be associated with worse overall working memory performance and a steeper rate of decline in working memory over time. H₂: Meanwhile, it is expected that participants …
Living Up To The American Dream: The Influence Of Family On Second-Generation Immigrants, Nicole Palmeri
Living Up To The American Dream: The Influence Of Family On Second-Generation Immigrants, Nicole Palmeri
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Second-generation immigrants are increasingly embracing their biculturalism, equally identifying as American and "other" (Yazykova & McLeigh, 2015). While this allows for ethnic diversity as well as other social and linguistic advantages, the internalization of two different cultures has been linked to causing tensions related to identity development and mental health (Huynh et al., 2018; Ceri et al., 2017; Ritsner & Ponizovsky, 1999). Previous research has shown a link between parental support and an individual's acculturation and psychological well-being (Pawliuk et al., 1996; Abad & Sheldon, 2008). This study seeks to further examine the influence of family on the bicultural identity …
"The Milk Is Love": Understanding Mothers' Emotional Attachment To Breastmilk, Chandel M. Perez
"The Milk Is Love": Understanding Mothers' Emotional Attachment To Breastmilk, Chandel M. Perez
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Mothers are known to have an emotional attachment to their infant; however, some mothers also experience an emotional attachment to their own milk. Exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months of life, followed by continued breastfeeding with complementary solids are recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization. Some mothers produce enough surplus milk to donate to a human milk bank. This thesis considers the emotional attachment to milk experienced by women who donate milk to a milk bank. This research is based on participant observation in a human milk bank in Florida and interviews collected …

Drug use is considered in many countries the plague of today's society. Researchers from medical, psychological and sociological fields, as well as lawmakers, are interested in finding more answers to this widespread phenomenon. All over the world there are known conflicts related to drug producing, transportation routes and distribution, that harm the economy and social standing of the involved communities or countries. Policies towards drug use vary from country to country, but this research focuses on how stigma affects the lives of individuals suffering from substance use disorder (SUD) in Albania. Substance use disorder is not often considered a disease, …
An Investigation Into Provider Communication At Ucf And The Impact Of Health Literacy On Teach Back Outcomes, Shreya L. Atmakuri
An Investigation Into Provider Communication At Ucf And The Impact Of Health Literacy On Teach Back Outcomes, Shreya L. Atmakuri
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The most important aspect of an encounter between a patient and his or her provider is the patient's ability to understand and implement the treatment plan and self-care instructions conferred by the provider. However, the literature in the field of patient-provider communication reveals that there is a noticeable gap in health literacy in certain patient populations that impairs their ability to understand pre-, during, and post-encounter paperwork, terminology, treatment plan, and critical self-care instructions. This has been shown to have detrimental consequences on patient health outcomes. The teach-back method, in which providers request patients to repeat key information discussed during …
Understanding Aggressive Driving Behavior: The Role Of Personality And Individual Differences, Enilda M. Velazquez
Understanding Aggressive Driving Behavior: The Role Of Personality And Individual Differences, Enilda M. Velazquez
Honors Undergraduate Theses
According to recent reports, 56 percent of total vehicular accident deaths were related to aggressive driving. Previous research on aggressive driving was related to cognitive failures, sex differences, individual driving habits, and to a lesser extent, personality. Personality focused aggressive driving research has not produced a consensus on the predictive nature of personality traits on the propensity to engage in aggressive driving. However, a lack of consensus on personality's role in aggressive driving warrants further empirical examination into the relationship between personality and aggressive driving. Similarly, the impact of individual differences on aggressive driving behavior cannot be ignored; the role …
Effects Of Death Anxiety On Learning Performance, Umaima Haseeb
Effects Of Death Anxiety On Learning Performance, Umaima Haseeb
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The present study examines whether or not a person's anxiety level might be linked to their learning performance. Many studies in the past have examined math and test anxiety, but the present study will examine the effects of death anxiety on learning performance. Individual's anxiety will attempt to be induced through fear of death. Participants were presented a set of four symptoms, similar to Gluck and Bower's 1988 category learning study. The participants were asked whether or not they think the symptoms of the patient are positive for COVID-19 or positive for the flu. The hypothesis was that there would …
Systematic Literature Review Of Cognitive Behavioral Treatments For Patients With Classical, Secondary, And Idiopathic Trigeminal Neuralgia, Linnea B. Herzog
Systematic Literature Review Of Cognitive Behavioral Treatments For Patients With Classical, Secondary, And Idiopathic Trigeminal Neuralgia, Linnea B. Herzog
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Trigeminal neuralgia is a painful neuralgia with a complicated pathology that is not clearly understood. Due to the ambiguity of the condition, patients often have to search for medical providers that specialize in trigeminal neuralgia, and even with the guidance of a specialist, some patients do not respond well to treatment.1 Despite the uncertainty surrounding the specifics of the disease, there are treatments available that can provide some level of pain relief for patients suffering from this disorder. When a patient does not respond well to medical therapy, surgery can be the next appropriate step in patient care management. …
Reviewing Constitutionality Of Time Spent On Death Row Under Eighth Amendment Jurisprudence, Angie Richardson
Reviewing Constitutionality Of Time Spent On Death Row Under Eighth Amendment Jurisprudence, Angie Richardson
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Under the Eighth Amendment, the death penalty is in and of itself not considered cruel and unusual punishment. Although the death penalty is frequently attacked for the numerous death row exonerations (more than 150 in the United States alone), lack of evidence supporting the idea that the death penalty deters crime, and marginalized groups being more likely to receive this sentencing, the death penalty still remains on solid constitutional ground. In fact, the arguments that pose the biggest threat to the constitutionality of the death penalty tend to revolve around the potential risk of substantial pain while executing an offender, …

The Constitutionality Of Section 5, Oscar Romero
The Constitutionality Of Section 5, Oscar Romero
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act serves as the constitutional response to the sins of voting discrimination perpetrated against minorities. The Founders of the Fifteenth Amendment envisioned the extinction of voting discrimination towards minorities and the prosperity of a government that is responsive to all Americans. Unfortunately, some states in the Union continued to block minorities from participating in elections through legal, political, and social means.
Moral Principles Under Market Rules, Oscar Romero
Moral Principles Under Market Rules, Oscar Romero
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
In a republican society, the government must generally carry out the moral values of its constituents, ranging from physical protection to economic stability to social equality. This is done by Congress passing laws and the executive branch, upon the President approving those laws, executing them faithfully. Because the federal government is enormous, agencies and departments established for the laws can be carried out effectively. However, like any government, they are limited to a budget to carry out those laws. These agencies can easily monetize materials when estimating the policies’ impact, but it is not easy to monetize moral values. The …

When an individual mentions divorce, it is easy to become swept up in an array of emotions. Divorce, in many ways, is seen as a beast of legal facets that needs to be understood. This highlights the impact that knowledgeable lawyers have on the general public. Understanding the individual facets of divorce law is imperative. Divorce not only affects two people, but it possesses additional consequences for individuals related to divorcees. Divorce further has the potential to shift the dynamic for an entire family. Additionally, divorce is becoming increasingly prevalent. Current survey data found that steadily half of marriages fail …

There is mounting evidence that fans of science fiction/fantasy media texts are more likely to be socially stigmatized than sports fans, but the implications of this stigma for social interaction have not been established. To examine the roles of fandom community membership and social context in causing social perceptions of, and behavioral intentions toward, popular media culture fandom community members, we conducted a 2 (partner fandom type: science fiction/fantasy vs. sports) × 2 (task type: social task vs. technical task) between-subjects experiment. Results reveal that the science fiction/fantasy fan was perceived as less physically attractive and more task attractive compared …

Stay And Play With Mickey Mouse: Familiar Characters Increase Children’S Exploratory Play, Haley A. Waite, Megan N. Norris, Allison J. Williams, Judith H. Danovitch Ph.D
Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase
When children are introduced to a novel toy, they explore to discover how the toy works, but do not always discover all of the functions (Bonawitz et al., 2011). Research has shown that children prefer objects with a familiar character on them (Danovitch & Mills, 2014). This study investigates whether the presence of a familiar character’s image on a novel toy encourages exploratory play. Four- and 5-year-olds (n = 40) were presented with a novel toy, containing 5 different functions, that either displayed an image of their favorite familiar character or an image of that character’s color scheme. Children were …

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase
Abstract:
The ability to make judgments about different kinds of evidence is an important skill for learning about science. This study investigated if children recognize how helpful relevant and irrelevant information is for evaluating biological explanations, and whether their judgments change with age. Participants were 24 7- and 8-year-olds and 26 9- and 10-year-olds. Children heard a statement about an animal's behavior. Then children heard an explanation for that behavior followed by 2 different observations. One observation was about the same animal but was irrelevant to the explanation. The other observation was about a different animal, but was relevant to …
