Disrupting Disparity: A Critical Race Transformative Mixed Methods Examination Of School Discipline, Ceema Samimi Jan 2020

Disrupting Disparity: A Critical Race Transformative Mixed Methods Examination Of School Discipline, Ceema Samimi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Racial disparities in school discipline are well-established in the United States’ public-school system. These disparities contribute to a phenomenon known as the school-to-prison pipeline. This phenomenon is a metaphor for the mechanisms that push students, especially students of color, out of school and into the justice system. While research has examined the causes and impacts racial disproportionality in discipline, no studies have focused on schools with no disparities. This study used Critical Race Transformative Mixed Methods to examine school-level quantitative data while employing phenomenological methods to interviews with 12 teachers using critical race theory as a lens. Findings revealed that …

State of the Commonwealth Reports

This is Old Dominion University’s sixth annual State of the Commonwealth Report. While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion, its president, John R. Broderick, the Board of Visitors, the Strome College of Business or the generous donors who support the activities of the Dragas Center for Economic Analysis and Policy.

Although our devotion to this work remains steadfast, our enthusiasm, admittedly, has been dampened by the COVID-19 pandemic and the toll it has taken on the Commonwealth and nation. Our work …

Perceptions Of Production And Animal Agriculture In Nonmetropolitan Nebraska: 2020 Nebraska Rural Poll Results, Rebecca J. Vogt, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel, Bradley Lubben, L. J. Mcelravy, Timothy Meyer, Steven A. Schulz, Jason L. Weigle

Nebraska Rural Poll

Most rural Nebraskans have farming or ranching history in their family. In fact, one-half of rural Nebraskans are one generation or less removed from the farm or ranch. Rural Nebraskans’ connection to agriculture has not changed much in the last ten years.

Most rural Nebraskans view their economic well-being as being dependent on both production agriculture in general and animal agriculture in particular. Furthermore, most rural Nebraskans say the economic well-being of their community or county is very much dependent on the economic success of both production agriculture and animal agriculture.

Most rural Nebraskans are supportive of new livestock development …

Noise Traders In Large-Cap And Small-Cap Portfolios: Impact Of Sentiments On The Mispricing, Eunjun Choo Jan 2020

Noise Traders In Large-Cap And Small-Cap Portfolios: Impact Of Sentiments On The Mispricing, Eunjun Choo

Honors Papers

This paper analyzes the impact of “irrational” investor’s sentiment on the abnormal returns of low and high cap stock portfolios. The “rational” and “irrational” sentiments are constructed using asset pricing fundamentals and the AAII sentiment survey data. The abnormal returns are calculated as the difference between the actual and FamaFrench model returns. I note that due to higher limits of arbitrage for the small cap stocks, the main effect of the “rational” and “irrational” sentiments on the small-cap portfolio seems stronger than on the large-cap portfolio. Moreover, I note that the mispricing of the large-cap stocks seems to revert to …

The Experience Of Guatemalan Women Who Seek Asylum In United States Courts: A Legacy Of Paternalism And Gendered Violence, Nina E. Harris Jan 2020

The Experience Of Guatemalan Women Who Seek Asylum In United States Courts: A Legacy Of Paternalism And Gendered Violence, Nina E. Harris

Honors Papers

Karen Musalo, a leading asylum attorney, explains,“In the United States, few refugee issues have been as controversial as that of gender asylum.” Despite perceived progress, inconsistent judicial decisions engender doubts about the viability of gender-based asylum cases. The U.S. courts continue to see violence against women as a personal or family matter rather than a pattern of accepted social behavior supported by the political and legal authorities. Using cases from Guatemalan women seeking asylum, my research scrutinizes the asylum system, and shows how the U.S. furthers a colonial, paternalistic narrative—allowing U.S. judges, adjudicators, and policymakers to decide who is worthy—or …

An Evaluation Of The Montgomery County Reentry Career Alliance Academy, Catherine Marliese Driver

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

As a result of a deterrence and incapacitation focused criminal justice system in the United States, reentry programming has become integral to both reduce criminal justice spending and mass incarceration. Reentry programming assists those released from prison with reintegration into society to prevent recidivism and allow the returning citizen to become a productive member of society. This study evaluated one such reentry program in Montgomery County Ohio. The Reentry Career Alliance Academy (RCAA) is a career focused work readiness curriculum that also includes workshops with community stakeholders. Evaluation was completed through paired T Test analysis in pre- and post-questionnaire responses. …

Perpetuation Of Poverty In Rural Tanzania, Dan Raleigh, Madison Coleman Jan 2020

Perpetuation Of Poverty In Rural Tanzania, Dan Raleigh, Madison Coleman

Ballard Brief

The majority of Tanzania's population lives in rural areas and experiences extreme poverty. The rural population experiences greater poverty and faces more barriers to escaping the cycle of poverty than urban populations. Several factors influence rural Tanzanians· inability to mobilize and obtain the necessary resources to escape poverty, including the practice of subsistence farming, limited infrastructure, and poor access to education. The consequences of poverty for the rural population include inadequate healthcare services. heightened disadvantages for women, poor nutrition. and increased child labor. Several organizations in Tanzania and nearby countries are working to halt the perpetuation of poverty and mitigate …

Hostile And Benevolent Sexism In India: Analysis Across Cultures, Suparna Jain, Manpreet Kaur, Shradha Jain Jan 2020

Hostile And Benevolent Sexism In India: Analysis Across Cultures, Suparna Jain, Manpreet Kaur, Shradha Jain

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Society often fails to acknowledge that gender inequality, or the disparity in status and power between men and women, continues to exist today. However, rising incidents of crime against women and victim blaming by politicians and higher officials in Indian society make it important to acknowledge the rampant prevalence of hostile and benevolent sexism. The present research focuses on benevolent sexism as displayed by participants from India. It aims to assess the prevalence and consequences of Benevolent sexism in India. Cross-cultural studies by Glick et al. (2000) are based on Ambivalent Sexism theory and provide the means of such comparison. …

Lack Of Higher Wage Opportunities In Missouri Contributes To Slower Economic Growth, Mallory Rahe Jan 2020

Lack Of Higher Wage Opportunities In Missouri Contributes To Slower Economic Growth, Mallory Rahe

Center for Applied Economics

This paper uses publicly available datasets from federal government agencies to explore differences in income inequality across rural and urban Missouri in the aftermath of the Great Recession to better understand how these factors are associated with relative job loss and job recovery. Previous work has explored various explanations for Missouri’s weak economic performance; could income inequality be a contributing factor? I find that Missouri has lower income inequality than the nation, largely from a lack of high-wage jobs. Missouri, and especially rural Missouri, obtains lower income inequality primarily through a lack of high-income households. Across the nation, rising income …

The Immigrant-Food Nexus: Borders, Labor, And Identity In North America, Laura-Anne Minkoff-Zern, Sea Sloat Jan 2020

The Immigrant-Food Nexus: Borders, Labor, And Identity In North America, Laura-Anne Minkoff-Zern, Sea Sloat

Food Studies - All Scholarship

This chapter addresses why immigrant farmers are so unlikely to participate in USDA direct financial assistance programs, despite immigrant farmers’ growth as a new group of farmers and particularly as a group that the USDA declares they want to support. We contend that the standardization of practices and bureaucracy inherent in receiving USDA assistance stands in stark opposition to the agrarian norms and practices of immigrant farmers and hinders their participation in USDA opportunities. The requirements of standardization help to maintain a racialized class boundary in US agriculture today, playing a large role in preventing immigrant farmers from moving up …

A Deep Learning Approach To Understanding Real-World Scene Perception In Autism, Erica Lindsey Busch Jan 2020

A Deep Learning Approach To Understanding Real-World Scene Perception In Autism, Erica Lindsey Busch

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Autism is a multifaceted neurodevelopmental condition. Around 90% of individuals with autism experience sensory sensitivities, particularly impacting visual perception. Despite this high percentage, previous studies investigating visual perception in autism impose severe limitations on our understanding. In many of these experiments, their stimuli and experimental methods are un-naturalistic and produce unreproducible and conflicting results. In this study, we investigate the nature of the real-world visual experience in autism with a cutting-edge experimental approach. First, we use virtual reality headsets with eye-trackers to measure gaze behavior while individuals freely explore real-world, everyday scenes. Then, we compare their gaze behavior to the …

An Exploratory Study On The Managerial Competencies Of First-Line Managers In A Philippine University, Alyssa Kaye S. Mojar, Dinah Pura T. Depositario

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

Faculty and researchers, mostly well-trained, usually fill managerial positions at universities. Still, they do not have formal management training. This qualitative study examined the managerial competencies of 11 university firstline managers. Using Kurz and Bartram’s Great Eight Competency Theory (2002) for the thematic analysis of the interview transcripts, most of the respondents exhibited all eight competencies. However, they differed in terms of manifestations. A typology of academic administrators was developed based on the eight competencies, namely: (1) delegator, (2) accommodator, (3) director, and (4) initiator. Further quantitative research is recommended to refine this typology. Likewise, to develop current and potential …
