Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In July 1998, personnel from Archeological & Environmental Consultants volunteered one day to assist the Denton County Historical Commission in their investigation of the 1850-1880 Wilson-Donaldson stoneware kiln (41DN19) near Sharon Lake, Bryant Branch, and Hickory Creek in the upper Trinity River basin a few miles south-southeast of Denton, Texas. This is one of a number of 19th century stoneware potteries making saltglazed and natural clay slip vessels in Denton County, including the Cranston Pottery (41DN16), Roark Pottery (41DN18), Lambert Pottery (41DN74), and Serran Pottery (41DN75), all sites listed on the National register of Historic Places.

The kiln and associated …

The Garvis Anglin Site (41hp253): A Woodland Period Site On Stouts Creek, Hopkins County, Texas, Lee Green

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The Garvis Anglin site (41HP253) was first brought to my attention in the spring of 2003 by the landowner Mr. Garvis Anglin. Mr. Anglin reported “flint chips” on the surface after having plowed the ground for the purpose of planting a food plot for deer. In June 2003, at Mr. Anglin’s request, uncontrolled excavations began at the site and continued sporadically throughout the summer. Large quantities of lithic debris and stone tools were recovered along with a small quantity of ceramic artifacts. Ceramics from the site included only four sherds and one small, but complete, utility ware jar. The site …

Ancestral Woodland And Caddo Cemetery/Burial And Mound Sites In East Texas And On The Sabine River In Northwest Louisiana, Timothy K. Perttula

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

This is the first iteration of a comprehensive list of all known ancestral Woodland period (ca. 2500-1150 years B.P.) and Caddo (ca. 1150-300 years B.P., Early Caddo, ca. 1150-750 years B.P.; Middle Caddo, ca. 750-550 years B.P.; Late Caddo, 550-270 years B.P., and Historic Caddo, postdating 270 years B.P.) cemetery/burial sites in East Texas and along the Sabine River at Toledo Bend Reservoir in Northwest Louisiana. If a cultural component cannot be established at this time for some of the Caddo sites, they are simply identified as having a Caddo component. Several references were key in compiling this list, including …

Ancestral Caddo Ceramic Vessel Sherds From Sites In Gregg And Wood County In East Texas, Timothy K. Perttula

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

There are many site artifact collections held in the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin (TARL) that are understudied and that have not been analyzed in detail according to current analysis standards. Among these collections are a number of site collections from sites in the Caddo area in East Texas (Figure 1), particularly ceramic sherd collections. In this article, I have tackled the intriguing collections identified from Gregg and Wood counties, Texas, mostly collected in the 1930s and early 1940s by Jack Hughes, then an East Texas resident (see Shaller 2020), but later a legendary …

Hurry Up And Decide: Empirical Tests Of The Choice Overload Effect Using Cognitive Process Models, Ryan Jessup, Levi E. Ritchie, John Homer Jan 2020

Hurry Up And Decide: Empirical Tests Of The Choice Overload Effect Using Cognitive Process Models, Ryan Jessup, Levi E. Ritchie, John Homer

Psychology

The choice overload effect emerged as a rebuttal to the notion that having more options from which to choose is always preferable. Jessup, Veinott, Todd, and Busemeyer (2009) used a modified version of decision field theory, a cognitive process model of choice, to generate multiple mechanisms based on psychological principles for the choice overload effect as it pertains to choice probability. Here we experimentally tested 2 of these mechanisms—time out and preference change—in a virtual hiring task to see whether participants hired more applicants when choosing from small relative to large sets of applicants. We further wanted to observe how …

Challenging Public Rhetoric Justifying Immigrants As ‘Indecent', Aaron Martin, Lisette Lemerise, Riya Chhabra, Sudharshana P. Kanduri, Julia Beleshi

Honors Scholarly Publications

Elites employ various rhetorical strategies in public discourse, including on the topic of immigration. As such, those with influence rely on storytelling to shape views about the narratives related to immigrants as a minority out-group. This has significant consequences, particularly in areas of policy development. Policy shapers have isolated immigrant groups by creating certain ideologically derived criteria well beyond citizenship for them to eventually receive “full American” status. Further, such status first has required immigrants to unduly prove their “worthiness” as exceptional—like being extra hardworking and very law abiding. Our essay seeks to show how foundational rhetoric is often intentionally …

A Novel Item-Allocation Procedure For The Three-Form Planned Missing Data Design, Kyle M. Lang, E. Whitney G. Moore, Elizabeth M. Grandfield Jan 2020

A Novel Item-Allocation Procedure For The Three-Form Planned Missing Data Design, Kyle M. Lang, E. Whitney G. Moore, Elizabeth M. Grandfield

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

We propose a new method of constructing questionnaire forms in the three-form planned missing data design (PMDD). The random item allocation (RIA) procedure that we propose promises to dramatically simplify the process of implementing three-form PMDDs without compromising statistical performance. Our method is a stochastic approximation to the currently recommended approach of deterministically spreading a scale's items across the X-, A-, B-, and C-blocks when allocating the items in a three-form design. Direct empirical support for the performance of our method is only available for scales containing at least 12 items, so we also propose a modified approach for use …

An Empirical Analysis Of The Nba Draft From 2006- 2014, Lloyd Ellison

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper investigates how well the NBA (National Basketball Association) does at drafting talent that succeeds. There has always been a question of if NBA prospects can have their NBA talent forecasted. The study seeks to compare different draft years and compare if the model can determine which athletes will become successful. The study seeks to use college statistics as well as the NBA draft combine data (which includes height, weight, wingspan, etc.) The study will be cross-sectional to get the best view of a bunch of players and because depth of talent can vary year to year

The Altar Of National Prosperity: Extractivism And Sacrifice Zones In Argentine Patagonia, Jonathan Gomez-Pereira Jan 2020

The Altar Of National Prosperity: Extractivism And Sacrifice Zones In Argentine Patagonia, Jonathan Gomez-Pereira

Anthropology Department Honors Papers

The advances in extractive technologies in the 21st century has led to the creation of a new powerful global actor, the Multinational. These multinationals have no allegiance to a state, as earlier forms of capitalism did, rather they are ventures in the industries of agribusiness and mining that operate in countries throughout Latin America. These global actors are able to effectively dominate economies through the reprimarization of the countries that host them. Countries like Argentina have welcomed multinationals like Monsanto and Patagonia Gold into their territories, which has proven to be a detriment to the communities and environments in which …

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

Gender has often dictated the roles and responsibilities that individuals are expected to fulfill. Societies in general still adhere to a strict gender binary system, and have largely been either intolerant of or, at minimum, uncomfortable with those who break from such a system. The tomboy figure has been the recipient of societal judgement for what has been interpreted to be a subversion of and deviance from traditional gender norms, and this has played out in a variety of ways. For instance, literary depictions of the tomboy—as the manifestations of the dominant cultural attitude—have captured both the aversion to as …

Criminalization Of Young Black Males, Useni Eugene Perkins Jan 2020

Criminalization Of Young Black Males, Useni Eugene Perkins

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

ABSTRACT

This paper examines the historical, social, cultural and political factors that contribute to the criminalization of a disproportionate number of young Black males. In doing so, it provides greater clarity for the reasons we are “walking in circles” to find a solution to why these youth are facing a future that is indisputably bleak. In framing this pronouncement, it will show how these factors have been institutionalized to create a system of racial oppression that targets young Black males to be both its victims and victimizers. As the result of this system, many young Black males are portrayed in …

The New Debt Peonage In The Era Of Mass Incarceration, Timothy Black, Lacey Caporale Jan 2020

The New Debt Peonage In The Era Of Mass Incarceration, Timothy Black, Lacey Caporale

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

In 1867, Congress passed legislation that forbid the practices of debt peonage. However, the law was circumvented after the period of Reconstruction in the south and debt peonage became central to the expansion of southern agriculture through sharecropping and industrialization through convict leasing, practices that forced debtors into new forms of coerced labor. Debt peonage was presumable ended in the 1940s by the Justice Department. But was it? The era of mass incarceration has institutionalized a new form of debt peonage through which racialized poverty is governed, mechanisms of social control are reconstituted, and freedom is circumscribed. In this paper, …

Taking A Knee To “Whiteness” In Urban Teacher Education: An Abolitionist Stance, Anne Auburn Sheaffer Jan 2020

Taking A Knee To “Whiteness” In Urban Teacher Education: An Abolitionist Stance, Anne Auburn Sheaffer

ETD Archive

In a qualitative narrative study of 11 urban teacher education faculty who teach courses that prepare teacher candidates for field immersions in metro-urban schools, I problematized “whiteness” by asking participants what it meant to them in the contexts of their work in contact zones were teacher candidates and K-12 students meet. The research was shaped as an abolitionist justice project (Tuck & Yang, 2018, p. 8) and considered how “whiteness” might be deconstructed and decentered in urban teacher education. Participants described whiteness as both fixed phenotype and historical and social construct which causes harm and which requires intervention. In scenarios …

Women Mps From Northern Ireland: Challenges And Contributions, 1953–2020., Yvonne Galligan Jan 2020

Women Mps From Northern Ireland: Challenges And Contributions, 1953–2020., Yvonne Galligan

Articles

This article investigates women’s representation as Northern Ireland (NI) MPs in the House of Commons since 1953. The central argument of the study is that the political and cultural positions dominant at the formation of NI in the early 20th century reverberate through the generations and continue to inform women’s political under-representation today. The article provides an historical context for women’s political and public participation from the 1950s, highlighting the gendered political culture in which this engagement took place. It examines the additional freezing effect of the ethno-national conflict on women’s civic and political involvement from the 1970s–1990s. In terms …

The 2020 General Election : A Gender Analysis, Yvonne Galligan, Fiona Buckley Jan 2020

The 2020 General Election : A Gender Analysis, Yvonne Galligan, Fiona Buckley

Articles

The February 2020 general election will be remembered as the “change” election, when the two dominant parties of Irish politics, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, trailed behind Sinn Féin in voters' preferences for the first time. However, for the gender balance of Irish politics, much remained unchanged. While the number of women elected to Dáil Éireann increased by one, this marginal growth since the 2016 general election was deemed a disappointment by analysts and advocates alike. A review of candidacy reveals that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael lag behind other parties in terms of the proportion of women selected and …
