Internet Linguistics (Ling 004b) Syllabus, Miranda Weinberg

Digital Humanities Curricular Development

Despite predictions to the contrary, it seems that the internet has not destroyed English. But how has the internet changed language use, and the study of linguistics? This course will be an exploration of the various forms that language takes online and in other digital formats, such as texting. We will explore questions such as: Why do my parents insist on texting in full paragraphs?; Is the internet good or bad for the future of indigenous and minority languages?; Is there a difference in meaning between :), :-), ^_^,?; What are the differences and similarities between face-to-face and online communication? …

Samuelson, Jamie K. Shelley, Tim Hoffland, Emma Jarvis, Kelly Pulis, Delphine Shannon, Mobashir Solangi

Student Publications

Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are viewed as a highly intelligent species capable of complex behaviors. This requires marine parks to maintain dynamic environmental enrichment programs in order to ensure dolphins’ optimal psychological and physiological well-being while in human care. In this study, two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of different forms of enrichment on the behavior of four bottlenose dolphins. In Experiment 1, multiple forms of novel enrichment resulted in a shift away from individual swim patterns – a change that is associated with increased behavioral diversity and so often considered an improvement in animal welfare …

Returns To Technical And Vocational Education And Training: Evidence From Zambia, Maka B. Tounkara, Chrispin Mphuka, Oliver Kaonga, Bona Chitah

Zambia Social Science Journal

The study seeks to investigate the returns to technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in Zambia using the 2014 Labour Force Survey (LFS). We adopt the modified Mincerian model and the fixed effects approach. We find that individuals who possessed TVET skills with certification, regardless of their gender or their place of residence, significantly earned more than their counterparts in wage employment without any TVET skills. We also find that males with vocational skills with certification significantly earned more than their female counterparts with the same TVET skills with certification, a sign of labour market discriminatory bias by employers. …

Older Women Using Women's Magazines: The Construction Of Knowledgeable Selves, Dana Sawchuk, Mina Ly

Sociology Faculty Publications

Women’s magazines are widely read in Canada. The popularity of such magazines is significant because critical gerontologists, primarily drawing on content analyses of the magazines, often argue that these publications convey problematic messages about ageing. This article broaches the subject of women’s magazines and ageing from a different vantage point, that of the older woman reader herself. This audience-centred research draws on 21 semi-structured interviews with Canadian women over the age of 55. The study examines what older women say about the ageing-related content of women’s magazines, along with what they say about how, when, and why they read these …

Organizing Dark Matter: W.A.G.E. As Alternative Worker Organization, Greig De Peuter

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Since its founding in 2008, W.A.G.E. (Working Artists and the Greater Economy) has worked to reform the economic habits of US art institutions and of the artists upon whose cultural work these institutions are dependent. Inside a decade, W.A.G.E. went from a small grassroots collective to an internationally recognized, yet lean, organization, which not only advocates for labour standards in the nonprofit art sector, but also develops practical tools to begin the work of doing better by equality in the art world. This chapter positions W.A.G.E. as an example of what Immanuel Ness terms “new forms of worker organization.” Informed …

The Effect Of Physical Interaction On Evolving Attention Relating To Advertisements And Visual Information, Margaret S. Davey

Psychology Honors Papers

As more technology is used on a daily basis around the world, the platforms of advertisements and learning have also changed. However, little is known about the effects of image and video interaction type on information retention. The current research examines the effect of different types of interaction such as swiping, tapping or viewing on memory of an image both with and without using the same interaction when the participants were asked if they remembered the image or not. In experiment one, the participants from the Connecticut College subject pool used a hand tracker system to swipe and tap images …

There were two parts to this study. In the first part, 12 psychotherapists in southeastern Connecticut and Rhode Island agreed to be interviewed and have the waiting rooms (20 in total) of their practices photographed. In a within-subjects design, the …

Implicit Bias Through The Lens Of Electroencephalography, Hope Cooper Jan 2020

Implicit Bias Through The Lens Of Electroencephalography, Hope Cooper

Behavioral Neuroscience Honors Papers

Unconscious or implicit bias is a part of everyday life. All human beings both exhibit implicit bias and (some more than others) are also the victims of it. Due to the way humans have evolved implicit bias will never be something that ceases to exist. Thus, it is important that neuroscience and social science closely study how it works and how to curb the behaviors caused by implicit bias. In the following research EEG (electroencephalography) was used alongside a weapons IAT (Implicit Association Test) to examine specific neural components that may correlate with higher bias scores on the IAT. Specific …

Tssa: Southwestern Anthropology Association Conference: Legibility Practice/Prospect, Kathleen Nadeau

Teaching Skills Study Awards (TSSA) Reports

A modified model of legibility vis-a-vis salon session was adapted for use my class, immediately, after attending the conference. Also, I took two students from my Winter Quarter class (Anth 301, Anthropological Theory) to the conference held that Spring Quarter 2019. They presented their research papers completed in Anth 301. In two of my Spring Quarter courses, I applied the modified model, by pairing student partners who were asked in sequential order to kick off the discussion, which then opened up to engage all students into the participatory process. The idea of running discussions like mini salon sessions (salon sessions …

Healthy Eating & Active Living In Childhood In Latinx Households In Spartanburg, Sc: A Community-Engaged Qualitative Research Study On Assets And Challenges, Laura Barbas Rhoden

Community Based Research

Spartanburg County organizations have engaged in coalition-driven, data-informed work for over a decade related to healthy eating and active living in the community. Work has been exceptional with regard to data gathering, data sharing, and the piloting of evidence-based interventions. Quantitative data, such as BMI data gathered by the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) countywide through schools, as well as survey results from the Road to Better Health initiative, give some sense of community demographics and needs. However, this large-scale picture reveals little about experiences at the household level and is of limited use in determining ways to …

Library Faculty Publications

This paper considers library programming as a means of extending and enhancing the academic library’s pedagogical mission and role in student success. Scholarly programming in the form of faculty speakers, film screenings, or other kinds of research-based events creates opportunities for students to join an academic community and to practice critical thinking skills learned in class. These presentations inscribe the library within the students’ journey from student to scholar, highlighting its importance as a nexus for scholarly exchange. At the same time, this programming strengthens the library’s mission by encouraging engagement with the campus, interdisciplinary research, and efforts to support …

Swiping More, Committing Less: Unraveling The Links Among Dating App Use, Dating App Success, And Intention To Commit Infidelity, Cassandra Alexopoulos, Elisabeth Timmermans, Jenna Mcnallie Jan 2020

Swiping More, Committing Less: Unraveling The Links Among Dating App Use, Dating App Success, And Intention To Commit Infidelity, Cassandra Alexopoulos, Elisabeth Timmermans, Jenna Mcnallie

Faculty Authored Articles

The present study was conducted to explore the cognitive processes linking people's perceptions of their mobile dating app experience and their intention to commit infidelity. Three hundred and ninety-five participants were recruited through a U.S. based university (44.6%) and MTurk (55.4%). Our results indicate that people's perceived success on a dating app was positively associated with their intention to commit infidelity through self-perceived desirability, and negatively associated with their intention to commit infidelity through perceived amount of available partners. These findings are discussed in light of theories of relational investment.

Assessment Of Bias In Police Lineups., Nancy K. Steblay, Gary L. Wells Jan 2020

Assessment Of Bias In Police Lineups., Nancy K. Steblay, Gary L. Wells

Faculty Authored Articles

Materials from five extant field studies were analyzed to determine the level of structural bias in police lineups. Depending on the jurisdiction, between 33% and 68% of lineups sampled from 1,548 real police lineups scored as suspect-biased using mock-witness proportion score. The suspect did not draw a fair portion of mock-witness picks in 20% of field lineups (reverse-biased lineups). Lineup fairness measures revealed that a point estimate (mean) for a set of lineups can mask significant problems in lineup construction and that any single lineup should not be assumed to be fair based on an aggregate score. A sample of …
