Zeroing In On Heroes: Adolescents’ Perceptions Of Hero Features And Functions, Elaine L. Kinsella, Alison English, Jennifer Mcmahon
Zeroing In On Heroes: Adolescents’ Perceptions Of Hero Features And Functions, Elaine L. Kinsella, Alison English, Jennifer Mcmahon
Heroism Science
Recent research has revealed that having a personal hero can offer psychological resources to adults, particularly during challenging times. Yet we know little about the role that heroes play in the lives of adolescents – a period of human development when challenges are plentiful, and adolescents are increasingly open to the influence of others outside the family unit. In the present study, adolescent perspectives were sought on types and characteristics of heroes, and the psychological and social functions provided by heroes for young people. Four focus groups were conducted with adolescents (N = 22) aged 15 to 17 years at …

Community Based Research
This project was undertaken as a result of conversations initiated by members of the Spartanburg Academic Movement (SAM) about the desirability of qualitative data to contextualize quantitative data generated by the use of a validated national instrument in Spartanburg County Schools. SAM is a nonprofit and community movement that facilitates the discussion of shared information and intentional, collaborative, and strategic work by cross-sector partnerships in order to foster high levels of academic attainment for all children in Spartanburg County. As part of data-gathering efforts by SAM, the Early Development Instrument (EDI) was implemented to gather data about kindergarten readiness first …

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
The genetic composition of Amerindian descendants from Patagonia has long been a focus of interest, although the information available is still scarce for many geographic areas. Here, we report the first analysis of the variation in the mtDNA control region for an area of northwestern Patagonia, the North of Neuquén, with the aim of studying the processes and historical events that modeled the evolutionary history of these human groups. We analyzed 113 individuals from two localities of northern Neuquén, along with 6 from southern Neuquén and 223 mtDNA sequences previously published from neighboring areas from Argentina and Chile. We estimated …

How We Talk About The Press, Erin C. Carroll
How We Talk About The Press, Erin C. Carroll
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
In 2017, the term “fake news” was so popular that it received the “Word of the Year” honor from the American Dialect Society. Since then, its popularity may have abated some, but its use persists. Most obviously, anti-press speakers weaponize the term fake news to undermine journalists and the press as an institution. Perhaps more surprisingly, however, the term is also in regular rotation among many who would seem to support a free and independent press, including scholars, teachers, and journalists themselves.
The continued and often-uncritical use of fake news should worry us. As thinkers across disciplines have recognized for …

Attending college is meaningful for many young adults. This period is marked by physical, emotional, and psychological changes that can have both positive and negative effects on college students. The last two decades have seen an alarming increase in the number of college students who suffer from mental health conditions, such as depression, suicide, anxiety, and alcohol abuse. It is recommended that actions to support the students’ wellbeing must be creative and evidence-based. Research suggests that a mindfulness-based intervention may be an effective strategy to address mental health conditions among college students. This study was done to examine the efficacy …

Examining Access To Sexual And Reproductive Health Care Services And Information For Young Women With Physical Motor Disabilities In Dakar, Senegal, Olivia Soule, Diatou Sonko
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Access to and use of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services in Senegal remains low despite local and international interventions and campaigns to increase contraception use, increase knowledge regarding Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI), and increase access to reproductive health services. Among marginalized groups, such as people living with disabilities, access to and use of services and information are even lower, and there are gaps in research involving Senegalese people with disabilities and their access to and use of SRH services and information. This mixed-methods, community-based participatory research examines how Senegalese women navigate their sexual and reproductive health care. It seeks …
Predictors Of Premature Discontinuation From Behavioral Health Services: A Mixed Methods Study Guided By The Andersen & Newman Model Of Health Care Utilization, Shawna M. Green
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Emerging adults, ages 18 to 25, demonstrate high prevalence of behavioral health illnesses, yet infrequently access treatment. For those who do access care, premature discontinuation rates from treatment are high, ranging from 30 to 50 percent. For the emerging adults who initiate contact with the systems of care by attending at least one session of therapy, there is an opportunity to engage them in treatment and prevent negative health outcomes in adulthood. This mixed methods study used the Andersen & Newman (1973) model of healthcare utilization as a guiding framework to explore and examine premature discontinuation from public sector behavioral …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
The objective of this study was to characterize exposures to metals using biological samples collected on socioeconomically disadvantaged black pregnant women. We obtained 131 anonymous urine samples provided by black pregnant women visiting a Medicaid-serving prenatal clinic in Houston, TX, from March 27, 2017 to April 11, 2017. We analyzed urine samples for 15 metals including cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and nickel (Ni) and for creatinine and cotinine. We found that median concentrations of zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), and aluminum (Al) among black pregnant women in this study were 1.5 to 3 times higher than levels reported among …
Three Essays On The Economics Of Education, Tianheng Wang
Three Essays On The Economics Of Education, Tianheng Wang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation consists of three essays related to the field of economics of education. In chapter 2, using data from middle school students in China and exploiting the random assignment of students to classrooms within schools, I investigate the causal effect of peer groups on students’ scholastic achievement. I find that female student proportion in the classroom positively affects male students’ test scores and that the education level of peers’ parents improves the academic achievement of both male and female students. Students with highly-educated parents benefit more from classmates with higher parental education compared to students with relatively lower parental …

The Role Of Abbreviations And Acronyms In Legal Discourse, Laziza Abrorovna Abdullaeva
Scientific reports of Bukhara State University
This article analyzes the abbreviations and acronyms characteristic of the legal language, the role of abbreviations in replenishing the vocabulary, their cognitive-derivational and social essence in legal vocabulary, linguistic and historical factors, as well as the influence of the Latin language on their appearance. At present, the acronym vocabulary is becoming an integral part of the vocabulary of modern terminology, since the modern stage of the development of science and technology requires more concise communication tools for nomination, and most of the new terms are cumbersome and inconvenient to use.

The article considers some aspects of cinema art that differ from other forms of art, the concept of "language of cinema" and its features, literary norms, and the names of films. It is argued that the creation of a film corresponding to our time is directly related to the analysis of the language of cinema in a linguistic aspect. And also, some deviations from literary norms in the names of Uzbek films in the period of independence have been clarified. The spelling, punctuation, morphological, and stylistic deviations in the names of films are analyzed.
