The Relationship Between Trait Narcissism And Perceptions Of Control, Sean Stephan Sullivan
The Relationship Between Trait Narcissism And Perceptions Of Control, Sean Stephan Sullivan
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Current research supports two variants of narcissism: grandiose and vulnerable narcissism. Although each variant shares a common core comprised of an antagonistic personality and an inflated sense of entitlement, the Perceived Control Theory of Narcissism (PCTN) identifies perception of control as the distinguishing factor between the two narcissistic subtypes. This study utilized self-report measures to examine the relationship between trait narcissism, locus of control, exploitativeness, and personal sense of power to test the predictability of the PCTN. Additionally, we explored whether social context affects trait narcissists’ expressions of exploitativeness and power. As expected, we found vulnerable narcissism correlated with an …

Rewiring The Nervous System With Art Therapy: Advocating For An Empirical, Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Approach To Art Therapy Treatment Of Traumatized Children, A Literature Review, Reid Dominie
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Devastatingly, children’s exposure to trauma and stressful life events is pervasive and spans a range of human experiences. Advances in neuroscience demonstrate that such traumas experienced during childhood can deleteriously rewire a child’s nervous system, in-turn altering their brain’s organization, development, and function. Left unresolved, the impacts of trauma can compound across a child’s lifetime manifesting in a host of negative psychological and health outcomes. Timely and neurosequentially-based interventions are key to helping traumatized children heal and achieve their full potential. This review of art therapy literature identifies current neurobiological-informed art therapy models for children who have experienced trauma. A …

Reducing Stress In Creative Spaces: Art Therapy With Adults Living With Physical Disabilities, A Literature Review, Kelly Brennan
Reducing Stress In Creative Spaces: Art Therapy With Adults Living With Physical Disabilities, A Literature Review, Kelly Brennan
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Historically and currently, adults living with physical disabilities encounter life dilemmas, triggering high levels of stress. Despite the seriousness of these situations, the support and recognition of the struggle such obstacles cause tend to go ignored by society. Since persons living without disabilities do not personally feel or even perceive the gravity of the stress, accessibility demands remain overlooked. Monumental changes in political and societal constitutions take time, however, current methods that are often used with individuals coping with stress are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based therapy. These treatments reduce stress among varied populations, specifically when treating individuals living …

Therapeutic Support Found In A Printmaking Method With Older Adult Veterans Through A Recovery Model Lens, Mckenzie Paddock
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Creative arts therapies provide expansive opportunities for personal growth and healing, but little research exists to prove printmaking as effective in increasing an individual’s quality of life. The indirect multi-step art form of printmaking offers therapeutic support through its attributes of unpredictability, containment, multiplicity, and adaptability, while accommodating themes of the three Rs of recovery: remediation, restoration, and reconnection. This study aimed to highlight the therapeutic effects of printmaking with older adults as displayed by an arts-based method conducted with veterans. A relief printmaking workshop took place over two-hour sessions once a week for three weeks at a Veteran Affairs …

The Integration Of A Dance/Movement Therapy Practice For Midwifery And Pregnant Women, Brianna Anderon-Frazier
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Dance/movement Therapy (D/MT) is a form of psychotherapy that utilizes the creativity in movement to express emotion, imagination, vulnerability, and identity. The non-verbal process that takes place within the context of D/MT appears within the activity of movement; a moment considered to be a rhythmic exploration and personal process with the body for mental and physical well-being. The integrative aspect of mind-body connectivity within D/MT has potential to be a supportive practice for pregnant women and their physiological changes of development. In recent years, researchers have turned to complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) such as dance/ movement therapy, whether it …

Creating A Space To Externalize: Mindfulness Based Art Therapy For Childhood Trauma, A Literature Review, Emily Jaworski
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Experiencing trauma in childhood can result in complex symptoms that impact the development as well as the mental, emotional, and physiological health of the child, resonating throughout their lifespan. Various forms of treatments are used to address the behavioral and emotional symptoms in children who experienced trauma such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Exposure Therapy, and Pharmacotherapy, however the vast majority of them do not incorporate a holistic framework when supporting children to process their traumatic experiences, therefore they do not attend to trauma as a catalyst for changes in the mind and body. This literature review aims to examine the …

Neurobiological Effects Of Trauma And The Efficacy Of Play Therapy In A School-Based Setting, Laurie M Smith
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
There is evidence that play therapy, used in a school-based setting, can be effective when working clinically with children who have experienced developmental trauma and exhibit the resulting maladaptive behaviors and symptoms. There are benefits and drawbacks to working within the schools to access children in need. Some benefits are consistent access to the clients and working with a team of other professionals to meet children’s needs. Drawbacks can be the lack of access to families and the infrequency of treatment. This paper explores the literature on the neurological impacts of developmental trauma on multiple levels of children’s functioning to …

"My Self Is The Art Is": An Art Installation Exploring Self-Reflection In Art-Making, Alexis Rubertino
"My Self Is The Art Is": An Art Installation Exploring Self-Reflection In Art-Making, Alexis Rubertino
Honors Projects
This is an art-installation which explores the following question: How does self-reflection play a role in art-making, particularly involving tacit artist-viewer communication?
I consider the self to be the recognition of a sum of experiences which constitute a sense of being: the self is experiential baggage that actively shapes the way one experiences the world. Artists must analyze their self and assume the viewer’s self to fulfill the intention of their art.
Art, loosely defined, points at or interacts with life and living – artists gather materials (visuals, ideas, audios, objects, etc.) and combine them to provide juxtapositions which create …

Conflict Environments And Civil War Onset, Lindsay Reid, Rachel Myrick, Kelly M. Kadera, Mark J.C. Crescenzi
Conflict Environments And Civil War Onset, Lindsay Reid, Rachel Myrick, Kelly M. Kadera, Mark J.C. Crescenzi
Political Science Faculty Publications
The spread of civil war poses serious risks and costs. We argue that conflict environments, which vary across time and space, systematically exacerbate the spread of civil war. As conflict in a state’s neighborhood becomes more spatially proximate and as lingering effects of conflict accumulate over time, that state’s risk of civil war onset increases. To theorize and test this argument, we construct the conflict environment (CE) score, a concept that taps into spatial and temporal dimensions of violence in a state’s neighborhood. Using the CE score in established empirical models of civil war onset, we demonstrate that a …
