Embracing The Cape: Increasing Social Emotional Skills Using Self-Distancing Superhero Therapy With Middle School Students- A Method, Erika Marinelli
Embracing The Cape: Increasing Social Emotional Skills Using Self-Distancing Superhero Therapy With Middle School Students- A Method, Erika Marinelli
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This research explored the benefits of incorporating pop culture into school counseling. A six-week method was implemented at a middle school which included using superhero therapy, social emotional learning, and the expressive arts. The method used self-distancing techniques to allow the clients a feeling of safety when exploring their social and emotional needs. In the six-week method, students created their own superhero using traits from popular superhero figures and had to embody their superhero to solve both fictional and realistic scenarios, both individually as well as a part of a team. Results from this method indicated that students increased their …
Moving Towards Intimacy: A Literature Review On The Use Of Dance/Movement Therapy With Couples, Rachel Kuntz
Moving Towards Intimacy: A Literature Review On The Use Of Dance/Movement Therapy With Couples, Rachel Kuntz
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Since its development in the early 20th century, dance/movement therapy has sought to help individuals strengthen communication, deepen empathy, build trust, and experience physical closeness. Incidentally, couples counseling tends to address many of the same goals. This Capstone thesis investigated the overlaps between the fields of dance/movement therapy and couples counseling to the effect of understanding how those fields may work together. An initial review revealed that the current research only examined dance/movement therapy with couples who are privileged in the areas of race, gender, sexuality, and socioeconomic status. Thus, the review broadened to explore how dance/movement therapists work with …
The Embodiment Of Culture: How Anthropology Informs The Practice Of Dance/Movement Therapy, Carlie Silva
The Embodiment Of Culture: How Anthropology Informs The Practice Of Dance/Movement Therapy, Carlie Silva
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The field of anthropology – the study of human culture – has much to contribute to understanding the practice of dance/movement therapy (DMT) from a culturally-informed vantage point. We exist in an epoch of expressive arts therapy where multicultural competency is becoming increasingly emphasized. Yet, culture’s grasp goes beyond its influence on the way people understand their world – it also shapes how people come to understand and make meaning with their bodies. This thesis reviews five categories of literature: 1) the influence of culture on the construction of the embodied “self”; 2) the influence of culture on movement tendencies …
Bridging The Gap: Relationship Building Through The Use Of Dance Movement Therapy With Older Adults With Dementia: Literature Review, Goni Rubel Zlotnik
Bridging The Gap: Relationship Building Through The Use Of Dance Movement Therapy With Older Adults With Dementia: Literature Review, Goni Rubel Zlotnik
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The purpose of this capstone thesis is to examine how the use of dance movement therapy (DMT) can be a beneficial intervention for relationship building when working with older adults with dementia. Studies have shown that dementia is a state where body and mind are in distress (Hill, 2009; Karkou & Meekums, 2017). Therefore, caring and understanding of dementia treatment is vital for maintaining relationships and developing new ones. Person-centered care (PCC) has been used in this thesis as a theoretical psychological framework to support relationship building with elders with dementia. Karkou and Meekums (2017) suggested that due to the …
Motherhood: The Role Of A Lifetime, Amy Larson Mcguirk
Motherhood: The Role Of A Lifetime, Amy Larson Mcguirk
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
A mother is thought of only in relation to another person. When a woman becomes a mother, her identify changes. As early as pregnancy, a woman’s brain makes a massive shift in order to care for her child. She loses parts of herself, not only how she will identify, but biologically, she begins to lose some of the gray matter in her brain; all of this begins to be stripped away as the woman becomes the mother (Caruso, 2016). A mother has certain qualities which make her a mother; but aside from having a child, there are not very many …
Developing A Method: How Dance/Movement Therapy Affects Pain, Anxiety And Quality Of Life In Pediatric Oncology, Kristin Ranke-Brown
Developing A Method: How Dance/Movement Therapy Affects Pain, Anxiety And Quality Of Life In Pediatric Oncology, Kristin Ranke-Brown
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Children diagnosed with cancer experience physical symptoms such as gastrointestinal distress, general illness, and pain-related symptoms as well as psychosocial symptoms such as emotions of sadness, anger, fear, isolation from family members, and self-esteem changes. A comprehensive understanding of these concerns and symptoms can develop a better means for communication and support of children and their families. Inspired by the potential for dance/movement therapy to decrease pain and anxiety and increase overall quality of life with the pediatric oncology population, the researcher explored the impact of dance movement therapy groups on 4-year-old pediatric oncology patients with varying cancer diagnoses. Weekly …

Therapeutic Use Of Mudras In Dance/Movement Therapy With Children In A Partial Hospital Program: The Development Of A Method, Harshita Bhargava
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Mudras are a codified set of gestures from different parts of the body in Indian Classical Dance and Yoga. Mudras in literary sources often refer to specific hand gestures. The thesis includes research on the use of mudras (hand gestures) from Indian classical dance and yoga in dance/movement therapy (DMT) to yield expressive and healing benefits. The research question explored “the extent to which mudras enhance self-expression and aid in building coping skills for stress, with children in a Partial Hospitalization Program.” An intervention was developed by considering the therapeutic implications of mudras and drawing parallels to elements of DMT, …
Transitioning Into Assisted Living Facilities: A Community Engagement Project, Alisa Carstens
Transitioning Into Assisted Living Facilities: A Community Engagement Project, Alisa Carstens
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Transition is a process and involves many physical, cognitive, and emotional changes for an older adult. In an assisted living facility (ALF), a new community was formed where established residents welcomed new residents into their new home. The residents came together in the morning dance/movement therapy (DMT) groups. DMT has many benefits to help older adults with the transition into the assisted living facility, such as providing the residents an opportunity to learn and rewire their brains through movement. In order to best support the residents and create a sense of community and accomplishment, this project involved a community engagement …
Decreasing Mental Health Stigma One Song At A Time: Using Community Music Therapy To Increase Social Connectedness And Decrease Self-Stigma And Perceived Stigma, Nora Woofenden
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
It is common for people to experience stigma related to their mental health issues. Research suggests that a supportive community can decrease this experience of stigma. Music therapy and performance have been shown to be effective in supporting people in expressing their stories and connecting, but there is little research into methods for building community through music therapy performance. This community engagement project uses the constant comparison method to analyze the impact of a public concert on the topic of mental health, designed to increase understanding and connection around mental health issues. The concert was performed at two different venues, …
Good-Enough Therapeutic Space Design: A Literature Review And Considerations For Expressive Arts Therapy, Rebecca Kreshak
Good-Enough Therapeutic Space Design: A Literature Review And Considerations For Expressive Arts Therapy, Rebecca Kreshak
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This thesis investigates the role of therapeutic space in expressive arts therapy through an interdisciplinary and international literature review. Definitions of therapeutic space and therapeutic space design are explored. This paper is theoretically grounded in the notion of good-enough therapeutic space, which is adapted from Winnicott’s (as cited in Davis & Wallbridge, 2004/1981) concept of a good-enough holding environment and Moskowitz-Corrois’s (2018) understanding of therapeutic space. Personal internship experiences of not-good-enough therapeutic space and a personal arts-based inquiry conceptualizing good-enough therapeutic space are discussed. Research from non-therapeutic and therapeutic settings, for both general and specific populations, are surveyed. The literature …
Healing Miscarriage Trauma Through Expressive Arts Therapy, Ritual, And Healing Circles: A Critical Literature Review, Amanda Mckernan
Healing Miscarriage Trauma Through Expressive Arts Therapy, Ritual, And Healing Circles: A Critical Literature Review, Amanda Mckernan
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Miscarriage is the leading pregnancy complication in the United States, yet discussion of it remains a societal taboo that limits women’s ability to receive emotional and psychological support from medical professionals and their communities. This paper presents an innovative method for healing and processing this unique form of grief. Expressive arts therapy is expanding as an evidence-based approach for the treatment of trauma and mental health concerns. Although there is minimal peer-reviewed literature on the use of expressive arts therapy as a singular healing modality for miscarriage grief, studies have shown that visual art, writing, music, and movement have proven …
Expressive Arts Therapy In Performance As Trauma Work For Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities: A Community Engagement Project, Lucy Farmer
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
People diagnosed with an intellectual disability (ID) are at a substantially higher risk of experiencing trauma than typically abled individuals. In addition, the nature of ID makes it especially difficult to cope and access treatment. The goal of this research was to examine how expressive arts therapy can support treating this population for trauma. Information was gathered on Trauma-Informed Care, Psychodrama, Drama Therapy, Interactive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and The Storytelling Method. This investigation led to a community engagement project between August 2019-February 2020 that involved the researcher meeting one-on-one with nine individuals diagnosed with ID. A …

Recovery-Oriented Dance Movement Therapy: A Controlled Trial In Mental Health Rehabilitation, Talia Bendel-Rozow
Recovery-Oriented Dance Movement Therapy: A Controlled Trial In Mental Health Rehabilitation, Talia Bendel-Rozow
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
This dissertation evaluated the appropriateness of using a recovery-oriented dance movement therapy (RODMT) intervention for people who were experiencing severe mental illness. Dance movement therapy (DMT) has been used for decades to support people with psychological and psychiatric symptoms but, before this research, has not been studied in context of the recovery approach to mental health rehabilitation. The theoretical assumption of this study was that movement-based experiential activities could be used as the primary agent to demonstrate and convey specific recovery concepts among participants. The researcher developed a protocol for 13 sessions of group intervention that merged DMT with Illness …

The researcher trained eight teachers to facilitate OSP and five of them implemented it with their classes for seven sessions. Quantitative data (K-YSR; pre- and posttest) were collected …
Lived Experience Of Music Therapists As Musician-Therapists, Kotoe Suzuki
Lived Experience Of Music Therapists As Musician-Therapists, Kotoe Suzuki
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
The dissertation research explored the lived experiences of music therapists who are performing musicians. A conceptual foundation of music therapists as musicians, a “musician-therapist” who is deeply versed in the unique properties of music can be identified in the literature (Ansdell & Verney, 2008; Nordoff & Robbins, 1973). The objectives of this study were to explore three topics: 1) deeper understandings of music therapists’ musical improvisation both in clinical and nonclinical settings, 2) the connection between music therapists’ personal and professional musical growth, and 3) identity formation. A qualitative method was chosen for this research including reflexive/embodied/interpretative phenomenology, and arts-based …

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the use of Dance/movement therapy (D/MT) with a focus on sensory stimulation among individuals living with dementia to promote a higher level of engagement, connection, and reminiscence. This thesis will provide a literature review on the challenges that individuals living with dementia experience and the importance of a person-centered approach to care that is grounded in relationship (Newman-Bluestein & Chang, 2017). Additionally, the role that Dance/movement therapy plays among people with dementia and the benefits of sensory stimulation within this population are also included. Finally, a Dance/movement therapy intervention that was implemented …
Can Expressive Arts Therapy Help Caregivers Of Persons With Asd?: A Community Engagement Project Capstone Thesis, Chie Mitsui
Can Expressive Arts Therapy Help Caregivers Of Persons With Asd?: A Community Engagement Project Capstone Thesis, Chie Mitsui
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Taking care of persons with autism spectrum disorder is not easy, especially in a school setting where there are more rules and cultures to follow. There is high turnover among our staff. I have witnessed several staff leave our school because of the burden of the work. The experience made me disappointed. I am sure that our students feel the same way as I do; they just don’t know how to express their feelings when they realize staff is no longer with them. They trust the staff and the staff leave, sometimes even without saying goodbye. I was sad each …
What’S Emergent? A Literature Review Of Thirdness And The Guide In Drama Therapy, Kathleen D. Moye
What’S Emergent? A Literature Review Of Thirdness And The Guide In Drama Therapy, Kathleen D. Moye
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This thesis engages two concepts in conversation: thirdness, which is a quality, awareness, or point of reference between two people in a relationship (Benjamin, 2004), developed within relational and intersubjective systems theories; and drama therapy’s guide from Landy’s role theory, a role in a story that emerges between two other roles and brings balance, perspective, and growth (Landy, 2008, 2009). Both are referenced as essential components of the therapeutic relationship. This thesis is a review of the literature on relational, intersubjective systems, and role theories, focusing on how theorists conceptualize the way a person interacts in relationship to others, the …
Psychosis, Spirituality & Expressive Arts Therapy: A Literature Review, Julie Sousa
Psychosis, Spirituality & Expressive Arts Therapy: A Literature Review, Julie Sousa
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This literature review explores varied treatment modalities for individuals who experience psychosis, carrying diagnoses such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective, bipolar I, or bipolar II. These individuals frequently experience marginalization and stigmatization in society. Unfortunately, this is often mirrored within the health care systems that provide treatment. These systems tend to focus heavily on symptoms, highly pathologizing client’s experiences, which can cause resistance to treatment. While psychopharmacology and traditional talk therapy are shown to be effective, they are not always sustainable. Varied treatment modalities are necessary. In order to promote more holistic treatment for these individuals, this literature review highlights recent global …

We Are Super - Building A Strengths-Based Superhero Suit: Development Of A Method, Gabrielle Kosta
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This paper presents an original method for young adults with autism spectrum disorders to discover and validate their own strengths. Using the monomyth, participants break down harmful personal mythologies and place themselves on a defined and empowering path towards their goals. Then, using a meditation and body-mapping, explore and express their strengths. The researcher wanted to explore more empowering ways of serving the population that was not focused on deficits. It was important to the researcher to bring things that the participants do well into the awareness of the participants so that they had a strong, positive base while moving …
Literature Review On The Effectiveness Of Expressive Therapies With Spirituality To Hong Kong Traumatized Protesters, Constance Chung
Literature Review On The Effectiveness Of Expressive Therapies With Spirituality To Hong Kong Traumatized Protesters, Constance Chung
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Expressive therapies and spirituality treatments have often been applied to people with trauma experiences. Previous research has found positive outcomes in these clinical practices. However, little research has been done to evaluate their effectiveness in helping traumatized participants in social movements. In 2019, there was a series of large-scale protests in Hong Kong resulting in many local political activists and protesters experiencing police violence and developing symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder. This critical literature review aims to explore, evaluate, and discuss the effectiveness of using expressive therapies with spirituality intervention to enhance the wellbeing of Hong Kong traumatized protesters. It …

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This literature reviews provides a synopsis of art therapy its potential benefits in combating negative effects associated with social media and adolescents’ sense of self-acceptance. Using art therapy as a mode of self-expression is found to help negate negative effects of social media and provide adolescents with healthy tools to help them develop and grow. Social media provides a wealth of information that can be detrimental to the emotional growth of young adults. In this literature review lack of face to face connection, idealized beauty standards, instant gratification and social comparisons are correlated to depressive symptoms in adolescents. Through the …
Emotional Layering: An Art Therapy Intervention With Children And Adolescents In An Inpatient Setting, Victoria L. Carey
Emotional Layering: An Art Therapy Intervention With Children And Adolescents In An Inpatient Setting, Victoria L. Carey
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Emotion regulation is the ability of a person to identify and control their emotions during life experiences. This form of regulation can be a struggle for some people, especially during their adolescent years. If a teenager is then in crisis, experienced trauma(s), and/or made a suicide attempt, it is even harder to work through and be able to identify their emotions. Existing research shows the difficulty some adolescents have with identifying emotions, especially after going through crisis and being placed on a locked psychiatric unit (Ciarrochi, Heaven, & Supavadeeprasit, 2008; Perez, Venta, & Garnaat, 2012; Hatkevich, Penner, & Sharp, 2019). …

Therapists utilize various means to treat clients, which includes the use of toys, games, dolls, and other media. By reviewing existing literature on therapeutic uses of dolls, I wish to shed light on the potential benefit of using dolls and figurines in the therapeutic setting. The use of dolls in therapy has been utilized in various ways, aligning with themes of narrative, drama, play, and expression. Through a review of existing literature and case study, the use of dolls as a therapeutic intervention will be explored through examining their use in multiple populations and age groups. By highlighting their wide …
What We Bring To The Space: Considerations For Emerging Therapists On Nonverbally Communicating Safety, Isabella Mazza
What We Bring To The Space: Considerations For Emerging Therapists On Nonverbally Communicating Safety, Isabella Mazza
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This thesis, in the form of a literature review, seeks to find how emerging therapists can nonverbally communicate safety within a group therapy session. In considering the target population, this thesis looks to focus specifically on children who have experienced trauma and may not have much experience recognizing the signals contextualizing safety. While therapists cannot guarantee ongoing safety, how are feelings of safety and trust in service of a therapeutic relationship developed? This research includes a review of literature in the areas of dance/movement therapy theories, trauma theories, polyvagal theories, and communication research. In this thesis, the term nonverbal communication …
The Queer Expansion Of Role Theory: A Drama Therapy Intervention With Lgbtq+ Adults, Abigail Truax
The Queer Expansion Of Role Theory: A Drama Therapy Intervention With Lgbtq+ Adults, Abigail Truax
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
There is currently a lack of information in understanding LGBTQ+ specific needs in mental health care, thus creating a marginalized space in which queer people are significantly more dissatisfied with mental health treatment as opposed to heterosexual and cisgender people seeking treatment (Avery, Hellman & Sudderth, 2001). This thesis will focus on the development of a method in which I will expand upon Robert Landy’s role theory and create a drama therapy role intervention crafted specifically for the queer population and their needs. Because of oppression within the LGBTQ+ community my focus will be on expanding role theory and its …
The Effectiveness Of Dance/Movement Therapy In Addressing Challenging Symptoms Of Transgenerational Trauma Found In Descendants Of Holocaust Survivors, Melissa Tibay
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Numerous studies have illustrated how psychological distress related to the Holocaust is present in children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors. This transmission of trauma, referred to as transgenerational trauma, has subsequently resulted in the occurrence of challenging psychosocial symptoms within these descendants. While there is growing evidence of a biological transmission of trauma, there is a lack of treatment for this population on a body level. This paper examines how dance/movement therapy could be utilized in the process of healing from transgenerational trauma by addressing trauma held within the body, as well as the resulting problematic symptoms, including lacking a …
Quieting The Buzz: Drama Therapy And Mindfulness In The Classroom, An Intervention, Karole A. Rose
Quieting The Buzz: Drama Therapy And Mindfulness In The Classroom, An Intervention, Karole A. Rose
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
From an incredibly young age, children in the United States of America are faced with significant stressors due to challenging life circumstances, parental pressures and ever increasing demands for success in all aspects of life including academics achievement, physical ability, and strong social skills (Allen & Klein, 1996; The Hawn Foundation, 2011). Yet, they often do not have the tools to manage the strong feelings and emotions that come along with these challenges and high expectations, leading to significant levels of stress and anxiety (Reilly, 2015). This thesis will explore the development of a drama therapy method in response to …
How Dance And Music Stimulate Therapeutic Change In A Personal Movement Ritual, Cassidy Bingham
How Dance And Music Stimulate Therapeutic Change In A Personal Movement Ritual, Cassidy Bingham
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This thesis investigates the therapeutic effects of the researcher’s own arts practice or personal movement ritual, which is based in her tacit knowledge and intuition. The researcher is also the participant of this study. Her personal movement ritual, which was formalized as the method, was conducted before the literature review in order to prioritize tacit knowledge before introducing the influence of other scholars. In the literature review, Ellen Dissanayake’s and other scholars’ rationale for the emotional and cognitive changes that take place during rituals through music and dance are explained. These rationales, or the five constructs of entrainment, “ …
