La Maestra’S Circle Of Care: Studying The Impact Of An Integrated Service Model On The Health And Well-Being Of Vulnerable Populations, Zara Marselian May 2020

La Maestra’S Circle Of Care: Studying The Impact Of An Integrated Service Model On The Health And Well-Being Of Vulnerable Populations, Zara Marselian

Dissertations

ABSTRACT

There is an urgent need to reform the health care delivery system in the United States, as recognized through current bipartisan efforts. Society’s vulnerable populations especially need health care reform as health care outcomes are the poorest among disadvantaged populations. Moreover, vulnerable populations are twice as likely to develop chronic diseases than the general population and they remain ill due to other contextual, societal factors affecting their ability to achieve health and well-being. This population is subjected to adverse life events that suggest a more comprehensive approach to health and well-being is called for.

The Circle of Care is …

Win The Game Or Build Decent Humans? Parental Perceptions Of The Family School-Relationship Across Socioeconomic Backgrounds, Elizabeth Dempsey Lee May 2020

Win The Game Or Build Decent Humans? Parental Perceptions Of The Family School-Relationship Across Socioeconomic Backgrounds, Elizabeth Dempsey Lee

Educational Studies Dissertations

Research into family engagement with schools states that the participation of a child’s family in schooling increases a student’s academic success. In education, family engagement is the newest policy tool to help children, especially those from marginalized communities, grow into successful adults. However, in sociology, intensive family engagement, defined as parental over-involvement in a child’s schooling, results in a narrow focus on traditional academic measures of success and the micromanaging of a child’s educational experience. Research indicates that this amped up oversight of a child’s education is the source of emotional, academic, psychological harm for children. As a result, parent …

Embodying Change At Work: An Autoethnography In The Indian Public Sector, Saikat Chakraborty May 2020

Embodying Change At Work: An Autoethnography In The Indian Public Sector, Saikat Chakraborty

The Qualitative Report

Beyond the macro picture of change in the Indian public sector triggered by economic deregulation and restructuration, the variegated experiences of employees exposed to organizational changes remain hidden and masked. Through a reflexive inquiry about my experience of participating in a managerial implementation of a performance management system in an Indian public sector organization, I write this autoethnography to bring forward a personal narrative of embodying change at work. I do this by revealing how my cultural, social, and political experiences during that episode of change were manifestations of being and constituting organizationally intended as well as non-intended changes. The …

"Where The Land Ends": Knowing And Governing The Limits Of Argentina's Soy Boom, Geneva Smith May 2020

"Where The Land Ends": Knowing And Governing The Limits Of Argentina's Soy Boom, Geneva Smith

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation is about how agricultural biotechnology was invoked in Argentina to rebuild the state and the economy after the 2001 economic crisis, which I approach by making visible the social lives of those experiencing the unintended consequences of a large-scale agrarian transformation. My starting point is to try to understand the paradoxical way that a leftist political project, Kirchnerismo, relied on and promoted an export driven soy boom as a way to rebuild the state after the 2001 economic crisis. While I do give significant attention to the high level state and industry practices, my goal is to examine …

Lgbtqc: Queer Perspectives On The Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities, Robert Burke May 2020

Lgbtqc: Queer Perspectives On The Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities, Robert Burke

Anthropology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Cities are broadly conceived to be queer utopia when compared with rural spaces. While the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa fit this simplistic model in some ways, the region has several unique characteristics that warrant their own investigation. I argue that the social climate of the Quad Cities is generally perceived as welcoming and inclusive by the LGBTQ+ community. However, despite an assortment of community-building institutions, some find socialization and partner-seeking a bit difficult. Many advocate for investment in a variety of physical LGBTQ+ “third places” (public gathering places), which would yield a variety of benefits for this community. …

Through The Lens Of Koreans: The Influence Of Media On Perceptions Of Feminism, Neha Cariappa May 2020

Through The Lens Of Koreans: The Influence Of Media On Perceptions Of Feminism, Neha Cariappa

Master's Projects and Capstones

Regardless of country and culture, the media has the power to influence the opinions and perceptions of its viewers. This project evaluates specific Korean movies—and the reactions of South Koreans to gender representations in films that are considered “feminist”—along with the variety show genre, which also tends to reinforce gender stereotypes and imbalances. With these media representations as a framework, this research explores the impact of the internet in forwarding feminist views along with unearthing the reactions of Koreans. Given the anonymity of the internet and social media, these platforms allow for honest expression and counterpoints to sexist views and …

A Way Of Life: Trauma And Resilience Among Muslim Sexual Minorities In Cape Town, South Africa, Afshan Kamrudin May 2020

A Way Of Life: Trauma And Resilience Among Muslim Sexual Minorities In Cape Town, South Africa, Afshan Kamrudin

Anthropology Theses and Dissertations

Ask any Cape Town Muslim “what is Islam?”, and the first words that will come out of their mouths will be, “Islam is a way of life”. Among Muslim sexual minorities, the answer is resoundingly the same. Stating that Islam is a way of life indicates there are prescribed rules and codes of conduct that one must follow in order to be a Muslim. As such, the experience of these prescriptions and expectations are culture specific and context-dependent. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the ways in which Muslim sexual minorities living in Cape Town, South Africa experience …

Delinquency In The Caribbean: Stakeholder Perceptions Of Root Causes, Laura Nolterieke May 2020

Delinquency In The Caribbean: Stakeholder Perceptions Of Root Causes, Laura Nolterieke

Honors Theses

There is a gap in the research on juvenile delinquency within the Caribbean context. As countries such as St. Lucia, Guyana, St. Kitts, and Nevis have growing delinquency and crime rates, there is a need to bridge this gap in the literature. This research sought to examine the main causes of juvenile delinquency within St. Lucia, Guyana, St. Kitts, and Nevis, as described by juvenile justice stakeholders, such as probation officers, prosecutors, and judges, within their respective countries. Through the use of grounded theory, the data were coded and analyzed using a constant comparison method. From these data, six themes …

Utilizing Expressive Art And Dance/Movement Therapies As An Embodied Practice To Inform Childbirth, Kayla Johnson

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

An eight-week curriculum developed by this researcher was implemented with a group of women in the Spring of 2018. The goal was to provide evidence, create resources, and demonstrate the effectiveness of Expressive Art Therapy and Dance Movement Therapy as an embodied practice to create connection, promote self-expression, empathy, embodied awareness, and healthy coping skills so that embodied childbirth seems obtainable and do-able. The shift away from embodied wisdom has moved women away from embracing their bodies and created risk in childbirth. In the United States of America, the maternal mortality rate is on the rise, which is unusual for …

Art, Movement And The Body: An Art-Based Research Exploration Of Slow, Gentle, And Repetitive Painting Movements, Melissa Hedlund Nelson

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

Art-based research explored the effects of using slow, gentle, and repetitive painting movements paired with pauses during this painting process. Five participants completed four painting sessions that were filmed; sessions consisted of painting with acrylic paints on canvas or Bristol board and reflective writing. Embodied response paintings were created by myself in response to participant paintings. A reflective research process consisting of documentation, reflection, and examination, was used to help in the materialization of outcomes. The inquiry yielded the following outcomes: it was challenging to paint slowly, there was an increase in connection to present moment awareness and immersion, a …

Neoliberalism And Its Socio-Economic Subjugation Of The Working Class As The Cause Of The Yellow Vest Movement In The Hauts-De-France And Grand Est Regions Of France From 1980 To 2019, Paul Scott Novak May 2020

Neoliberalism And Its Socio-Economic Subjugation Of The Working Class As The Cause Of The Yellow Vest Movement In The Hauts-De-France And Grand Est Regions Of France From 1980 To 2019, Paul Scott Novak

Senior Theses

This paper offers an insight into the cause of the Yellow Vest Movement in France. I argue that the Yellow Vest Movement was not simply caused by the Gas Tax passed under the Macron Administration, but by years of subjugation of the working-class under neoliberal ideology stemming from the 1980s and continuing to 2019. The two northern regions of Grand Est and Hauts-de-France known historically for their working-class communities are examined in order to see how neoliberalism has subjugated the working-class over the past forty years. Using the works of Pierre Bourdieu, Édouard Louis, Florence Aubenas, François Ruffin, and my …

Understanding The Conditions For Protected Area Success In The Asia Pacific And Neotropical Regions, Noel Nina Langan May 2020

Understanding The Conditions For Protected Area Success In The Asia Pacific And Neotropical Regions, Noel Nina Langan

Senior Theses

Tropical rainforests support a significant portion of the world’s total biodiversity. In addition, they provide a number of invaluable ecosystem services including climate regulation and mitigation, carbon sequestration, food, medicinal, and genetic resource provisioning, and cultural services. Today, an array of human land use decisions are the greatest driver of rainforest loss and degradation and are largely responsible for dramatic biodiversity losses globally, but especially in the Asia-Pacific and Neotropical regions where forest fragmentation has come to dominate landscapes. Protected area policies are among the oldest and most commonly employed tools for biological conservation and will be integral to the …

A guided body scan, Focusing Oriented Art directives, and improvisational movement explorations were employed to deepen awareness and understanding of the emotions and memories participants wished to have better control over. Three movement rhythms, which are central to the ancient feminine dance form popularly known as belly dance, were explored through improvisational movement both as a group and independently. These movement rhythms included staccato pops and locks, fluid figure eights, and vibratory shimmies. Participants …

Lessening Psychosomatic Symptoms Using Art Therapy, Mindfulness, And Yoga: Development Of A Method, Breanna Washburn May 2020

Lessening Psychosomatic Symptoms Using Art Therapy, Mindfulness, And Yoga: Development Of A Method, Breanna Washburn

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Psychosomatic symptoms are often misunderstood and ignored by many individuals that see those that experience them as either hypochondriacs, or not a priority due to often being unexplained by modern medicine. Mindfulness-based practices have been one of the most common proven treatment methods in various studies to support the reduction and intensity of symptoms coming from emotional distress. Both art therapy and yoga were shown in some studies to do the same, but at a lower rate. I was drawn to exploring how to lessen psychosomatic symptoms by combining these three aspects of treatment to create a mindfulness-based art therapy …

The Risk Of Monetary Integration: How Italy And Germany’S Cultural And Economic Differences Are Incompatible With Shared Monetary Policy And Jeopardize The Stability Of The Union, Matthew Rossi Jordan

Senior Theses

The project of the European Union has successfully transformed western Europe into a powerful and stable bloc empowered by expansive economic and political integration. However, certain pathways of integration, such as the introduction of the Eurozone and the monetary consolidation it entails, have actually weakened the Union by disregarding the vast economic and cultural differences between the countries. In this thesis, I use the examples of Germany and Italy, outlining and discussing various cultural and economic differences between them to show their incompatibility with a shared currency. I will substantiate this with a discussion of monetary policy, and will dissect …

"Underage Marriage: The Global Cultural Paradigm", Alexandra Ciociola Murphy May 2020

"Underage Marriage: The Global Cultural Paradigm", Alexandra Ciociola Murphy

Senior Theses

Underage marriage is a union where one or both parties is under the age of 18. Marriage before the age of 18 not only has severe health and developmental consequences for those that fall victim to the practice, but also economic consequences for regions where it is practiced. Many solutions have been proposed to eliminate underage practice, but with minimal results. The writing in this research explores the causes, effects and solutions of underage marriage comparatively between Morocco, Bangladesh, and the United States. Historical context, regional culture, and economic development are taken into consideration and analyzed to draw to the …

Hacking Nation-State Relationships: Exploiting The Vulnerability Of The Liberal International Order, Ray Marie Tischio

Senior Theses

This thesis explores the implications of nation-state cyberwarfare and cyber conflict in the context of geopolitics and international studies. The emergence of nation-state cyber conflict has increased in frequency and severity in the last decade. In order to investigate what renders cyberwarfare a new and unique challenge to specific geopolitical climates and international systems at large, research on state-level cyber conflict within bilateral relationships—all of which cyber activity is significantly prevalent—is presented in the following three case studies: US-China, US-Iran, and US-Russia. Findings of these three case studies are used in subsequent analysis to articulate the specific ways in which …

The French nation has witnessed a divide between the native citizens and the naturalized, immigrant population, who has felt excluded from the privileges that the French identity offers. The object of the thesis will be directed at finding the source of the identity crisis, specifically by focusing on the immigrants’ economically vulnerable living conditions, in the poor suburban areas of France. Militarism, Economics, And Nationalism: The Russian And Chinese Expansionist Foreign Policy Of The 21st Century, Paul Charles Gargiulo Jr. May 2020

Militarism, Economics, And Nationalism: The Russian And Chinese Expansionist Foreign Policy Of The 21st Century, Paul Charles Gargiulo Jr.

Senior Theses

While the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 may have harkened in a new era of global peace, the rise of nationalist governments in China and Russia have changed this circumstance as seen in their respective spheres of influence. During the first two decades of the 21st Century, China and Russia have become increasingly aggressive in the application of their foreign policies, attempting to assert their presence on the global stage. From 1945 through 1991, there has been a historical precedence of Chinese and Russian dominance in the South China Sea and in Eastern Europe. This was in part …

"The Aftermath Of Terrorism: The Islamophobic Rhetoric Of Donald Trump And Narendra Modi", Joshua Jonathan Somrah May 2020

"The Aftermath Of Terrorism: The Islamophobic Rhetoric Of Donald Trump And Narendra Modi", Joshua Jonathan Somrah

Senior Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to compare the Islamophobic rhetoric of Trump after the 2015 San Bernardino Attack and the 2016 Orlando Nightclub Shooting with the Islamophobic rhetoric of Modi after the 2016 Uri Attack and the 2019 Pulwama Attack and to analyze how the Anti-Muslim rhetoric of Trump and Modi affected the lives of Muslims within their countries and abroad. I argue that Trump and Modi used Anti-Muslim language in the wake of the four terrorist attacks mentioned above for their own political agendas, which resulted in Anti-Muslim political decisions that affected the lives of many Muslims within …

"Public Space And The Urban Village: How People Weave Together The Urban Village And The Surrounding Urban City", Anne Louise Pestaña-Lee

Senior Theses

Urban villages (chengzhongcun) are unique to China and are a result of the country’s rapid urbanization. There has been much research and analysis done in trying to understand the nuances of the redevelopment process and how to appropriately revamp this process in order for it to mutually benefit all involved stakeholders. Also, there has been much research done on the public space in the urban village, but this research is often confined to the bubble of the urban village. It seems there is little interest in analyzing the overlap between urban village and the surrounding metropolis. Heavily overlooked is the …

"Hungary: An Inflection Point For A Young Democracy In Decline", Patrick Rhinelander Rizzi May 2020

"Hungary: An Inflection Point For A Young Democracy In Decline", Patrick Rhinelander Rizzi

Senior Theses

This thesis provides an analysis of the global concern with “illiberal democracies,” which are states with at least some democratic institutions but diluted civil societies. From there, it establishes Hungary as a case study of how a young democracy has entered into institutional decline through an analysis of both the illiberal policies of the current Hungarian government as well as relevant historical context that may have disadvantaged Hungary in transitioning to democracy in the first place. As a post-communist country now heading down the path towards increasing authoritarianism, Hungary serves as a prime example of this issue. Specific areas in …

"Is It Viable To Have A Fully-Functional Multiethnic State In Modern Society? A Dual Regional Inquiry", Anike Tella-Martins May 2020

"Is It Viable To Have A Fully-Functional Multiethnic State In Modern Society? A Dual Regional Inquiry", Anike Tella-Martins

Senior Theses

Throughout the world, regardless of economic status, there have been multiple complications with the lives and experiences of minorities in multiethnic state populations. Research regarding multiethnic state populations either have a Western focus or contrast non-Western multiethnic cultural formations from Western ones. Neither of these trends fully delve into the heart of this global issue. The inquiry examines whether or not a fully functional multiethnic state can exist in today’s world. By studying two emerging middle powers, Nigeria and Pakistan, it would be an indicator as to whether or not a nation state of this construction is plausible for not …

Mindfulness And Retention: A Potential Solution To The Lack Of Persistence Of Community College Students, Sandra Parsons May 2020

Mindfulness And Retention: A Potential Solution To The Lack Of Persistence Of Community College Students, Sandra Parsons

Mindfulness Studies Theses

Retention of community college students has many obstacles and unknowns. Students leave school and abandon their dreams of a college education for various reasons, such as lack of financial support, family support, and campus support. Efforts to research and develop retention practices and theories have been pursued for more than fifty years. Researchers and higher education institutions believe that incorporating such practices as first-year programs, learning communities, and tutoring will help in their retention efforts. While some of these practices have improved college student persistence, their efficacy has not been demonstrated for all students, specifically for those who attend community …
