Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Conference Presentation presented at PLAI 2019 National Congress in Tagaytay City, Philippines.
Libraries across the world—especially in the US and Asia—are rapidly changing. New technology, trends, and user needs are all driving libraries to adapt. This includes being more inclusive (meeting all users’ needs, of diverse backgrounds), more innovative (overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities), and more interconnected (forging partnerships and making creative connections). This paper presentation will showcase inspiring, real-life examples of just such libraries! The two co-presenters bring first-hand experience in featuring these showcased libraries. The first leads the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA), a professional library organization …

Conference Presentation presented at Charleston Conference 2019 in Charleston, South Carolina.
Subject librarians are uniquely poised to facilitate conversations and assistance about scholarly communication topics to faculty and students -- helping make the connections between scholarly communication and discipline-specific research. The University of Central Florida (UCF) Libraries offers a unique intersection between scholarly communication and subject librarians by implementing a robust subject librarian model that includes activities related to scholarly communication and partnering with UCF’s Office of Scholarly Communication to provide support on a variety of topics to the campus community. In particular, this model has been particularly effective with …

This is the slides and talking points for a presentation at the 16th Annual Open Education Conference.
Two hot topics in education are Textbook Affordability (TA) and Open Educational Resources(OER). These initiatives can be under one umbrella at an institution, a collaborative effort, or led by completely different departments.
To assess and improve the current Textbook Affordability website, the Student Success/Textbook Affordability Librarian conducted a review of websites on Textbook Affordability and Open Educational Resources. The review examined websites from US academic institutions who were members of SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition). Using this sample group, over …

This project grew out of my interest in a presentation on “Supporting Neurodiversity in the Academic Library” by Florida State University at the 2019 Florida Library Association conference. The presentation referenced the publication, Project A+: Serving Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Academic …

In an evolving academic library environment, the duties of the subject liaison librarian are ever changing and being adapted as new responsibilities are added year after year. The Science Librarian and Engineering & Computer Science Librarian at the University of Central Florida are taking a model-based approach to handling these changes in STEM discipline support. During this session we will cover strategies for improving STEM student success based on a model for collaborative instruction, creative outreach, and cooperative service. This “STEM Team” based approach involves working closely on STEM based initiatives by facilitating and organizing related events and workshops which …

Predatory & Deceptive Publishing Pitfalls And Practical Tips: Helping Faculty & Students To Identify & Avoid Questionable Publishing Practices, Sarah A. Norris
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
In today’s academic publishing environment, open access journals have become an increasingly common venue for faculty and students, to publish scholarly research. However, this publishing model often prompts many issues and concerns -- one of which is predatory (or, deceptive) publishing practices. These publishers rely on a variety of strategies and deceptive tactics to give the illusion that they are credible and high quality. With this in mind, it is often difficult for faculty and students to distinguish between a credible open access journal and a predatory one. This presentation will provide practical tips on how to facilitate information about …
Lower The Barrier & Be Empowered: Creating And Including Linked Data Vocabularies For Digital Collections, Sai Deng
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Linked data has been explored and adopted by the library and archive community in recent years, but it has remained a relatively high bar to implement for most librarians and catalogers in their daily work. To lower the barrier, the librarians at the University of Central Florida (UCF) Libraries have adopted open source tools and platforms such as OpenRefine and Wikidata to their workflows to include linked data for their collections in the digital repositories as well as the library catalog. This presentation will review digital repositories' capabilities in accommodating linked data and show several cases of adding linked data …
Bibliometrics And Research Evaluation: Uses And Abuses, Sarah A. Norris
Bibliometrics And Research Evaluation: Uses And Abuses, Sarah A. Norris
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Measuring the impact of research and publications (bibliometrics) has become increasingly common for libraries, academic institutions, and scholars. Libraries use bibliometric measures, such as citation analysis, when considering which journals to acquire and retain. Faculty use them to demonstrate the value of their research in the tenure process. Academic institutions are beginning to use them to demonstrate institutional ranking and prestige (Pagell, 2014; Chen & Liao, 2012). In today’s data driven environment, bibliometrics play a critical role. As with any type of metric, bibliometrics are not without their challenges and issues. Bibliometrics and Research Evaluation: Uses and Abuses aims to …

Theme Park Experience: Factors Explaining Amount Of Pleasure From A Theme Park Visit, Time Allocation For Theme Park Activities, Perceived Value, Queuing Quality, Satisfaction, And Loyalty, Maksim Godovykh, Ady Milman, Alsi D.A. Tasci
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
A considerable amount of literature describes concepts that predict theme park visitor behavior. Although previous studies made an effort to measure the impact of several variables on theme park visitors’ loyalty, there is a lack of empirical attention on the impact of some consumption variables such as previous experience, perceived queuing quality, waiting time, using of virtual queuing, and the role of anticipating and remembering the visit. The current study introduces several new experience concepts that were not previously discussed in the literature: the amount of pleasure from anticipation, visiting, and remembering the experience, and time allocation for waiting in …
