Humanature Relations In Oman: Connections, Disconnections And Globalization, Maryam A. Alhinai
Humanature Relations In Oman: Connections, Disconnections And Globalization, Maryam A. Alhinai
Communication ETDs
In this dissertation, I explore agricultural practices as a window into ecocultural communication. Using agricultural practices of villagers in Village G, Oman, as a case study, I explore the ways in which villagers and government officials conceptualize humanature relations and the forces that enhance and/or impede these relations. My specific goals for this study were: (1) to build an interpretive understanding of ecocultural orientations of villagers and officials in Oman and how they conceptualize their humanature relations; (2) to critically examine ideologies and uncover structural forces that enable/constrain humanature relations; and (3) to co-create community engagement work that honors the …

Contextualized Education In Global Schools: Conceptualizing School Systems In A Global World, Loren Guerin
Contextualized Education In Global Schools: Conceptualizing School Systems In A Global World, Loren Guerin
International Development, Community and Environment (IDCE)
Education has been prioritized by global agencies as a universal right and current trends in the United Nations global benchmarks and development agencies call for education for all and a set of global values to guide educational policy and practice. This paper aims to problematize the current understanding of schooling and educational systems in a globalized world while demonstrating the need to move away from a global curriculum based on homogenized values and towards a contextualized education system. By looking at the evolution of Western Education, the use of education by colonial powers, and an in depth case study of …

Transforming The State, Challenging The Nation: The Role Of Identity Politics In The Brexit Vote, Rebecca Mendelsohn
Transforming The State, Challenging The Nation: The Role Of Identity Politics In The Brexit Vote, Rebecca Mendelsohn
Political Science Honors Projects
British voters have decided to withdraw membership from the European Union (EU). By considering the outcome of Brexit as a moment in time when British voters declared, “this is who we are,” this project asks: What role did identity play in the Brexit vote? What does Brexit tell us about how expressions of identity have been affected by transformations of the state? An internal conflict over what it means to be British has, in part, driven the United Kingdom to leave the EU. Neither British Euroscepticism nor competing notions of Britishness are new. Rather, anxiety over the ability to dictate …

Developed Toast, Modern Laundry: Nepali Household Appliance Discourses, Maureen Mccord
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This project investigates discourses of modernity, globalization, class identity, and social change in Kathmandu, Nepal, through the lens of ten Nepali women’s purchase and usage of home appliances. Four weeks of ethnographic research sought to identify prevailing practices and attitudes toward household appliances in the city, situating them in broader discourses of globalization, modernity, class identity, and social change. The project is composed of participant observation in Nepali homes, including informal interviews, with project participants sourced from my own social network. My collaborators’ practices and opinions on appliances engage discourses of the developmentalist and modernizing South Asian state, fluid and …
Corporate Codes In The Varieties Of Capitalism: How Their Enforcement Depends On The Differences Among Production Regimes, Gunther Teubner
Corporate Codes In The Varieties Of Capitalism: How Their Enforcement Depends On The Differences Among Production Regimes, Gunther Teubner
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
Globalization has reinforced the conflicts among the varieties of capitalism. The colliding units are not just nation states, but transnational production regimes, which cut through national boundaries. The conflicts lead global corporate codes, which are developed by international organizations, to take different directions when they are concretized on the enterprise level. They will be differently enforced according to whether they are located in Liberal Market Economies (LME), adapted to the New Sovereignty of enterprises, or in Coordinated Market Economies (CME) with greater components of social welfare state and economic democracy.
Different patterns of enforcement emerge particularly when the courts have …
Globalization As A Racial Project: Implications For Human Trafficking, Sarah Hupp Williamson
Globalization As A Racial Project: Implications For Human Trafficking, Sarah Hupp Williamson
Journal of International Women's Studies
This essay considers the potential impact of viewing globalization as a racial project in relation to human trafficking. Through an examination of a wide variety of scholarly sources and the work of Omi and Winant (2015), this essay presents the argument that globalization itself is a racial project by tracing how race is interwoven with the processes of globalization. It then asserts the implications this conceptualization of globalization has for human trafficking, and particularly anti-trafficking efforts. Finally, it argues for the power of using such a conceptual framework and suggests the incorporation of a critical globalization perspective for future studies …

Chicago Public Schools And The Creation Of Global Citizens, Rebecca L. Kijek
Master's Theses
This article examines the role different high schools in Chicago Public Schools play in providing students with the type of knowledge needed to better prepare them for success in a globalized society. As Chicago strives to solidify itself as a global city, its need to educate youth for a new economy are clear. The global economy demands that students are educated in science, technology, engineering, and math, world languages, expanded cultural perspectives, and attend a four-year college. Through a comparative analysis of the academic programming features at Chicago's selective enrollment and neighborhood high schools, this study will answer the question: …
Bilateral Investment Agreements - The Legal Basis For Economic Partnership, E. Tulyakov
Bilateral Investment Agreements - The Legal Basis For Economic Partnership, E. Tulyakov
International Relations: Politics, Economics, Law
Attracting foreign investment, a developing country sets several goals: to obtain financial resources, use advanced managerial experience, and introduce innovative technologies. Achieving these goals becomes the basis for the modernization of the national economy. The advantages of bilateral agreements include the fact that they are the most flexible instrument for regulating interstate investment agreements that can have a direct regulatory effect on the subjects of these relations, thus compensating for the lack of incompleteness and instability of national investment legislation.
Currency Regime Of Uzbekistan: Goals, Consequences, Ways To Improve, N. Sirajiddinov
Currency Regime Of Uzbekistan: Goals, Consequences, Ways To Improve, N. Sirajiddinov
International Relations: Politics, Economics, Law
The currency regime and exchange rate policy of the country are among the main factors determining the investment climate and the competitiveness of national producers, macroeconomic stability and financial security of the state. Investment activity, the pace of modernization of the economy and its structural adjustment, the achievement of its sustainable growth, and the increase in the level of well-being of the population largely depend on the currency regime used. It is the exchange rate policy chosen by the government that largely determines the stability of the national currency, its protection against external shock influences, the country's sufficient foreign currency …

Astroturf Activism, Melinda (M.J.) Durkee
Astroturf Activism, Melinda (M.J.) Durkee
Scholarship@WashULaw
Corporate influence in government is more than a national issue; it is an international phenomenon. For years, businesses have been infiltrating international legal processes. They secretly lobby lawmakers through front groups: “astroturf” imitations of grassroots organizations. But because this business lobbying is covert, it has been underappreciated in both the literature and the law. This Article unearths the “astroturf activism” phenomenon. It offers an original descriptive account that classifies modes of business access to international officials and identifies harms, then develops a critical analysis of the laws that regulate this access. I show that the perplexing set of access rules …
Does Globalization Enhance Countries’ Ability To Combat Human Trafficking?, Yewen Zeng
Does Globalization Enhance Countries’ Ability To Combat Human Trafficking?, Yewen Zeng
Senior Projects Spring 2017
There is much literature that argues that human trafficking (HT) is actually a down side of globalization since HT increased dramatically with globalization during the mid-1980s. However, it must be acknowledged that globalization is not the inherent cause of HT but an intermediary that helps to achieve it. Although much literature studies the nexus of globalization and human trafficking, there is a lack of publications to analyze the future impact of globalization on combating human trafficking. This project aims to fill the gap by providing an empirical analysis of whether globalization enhances countries’ ability to combat HT or not. This …
Global Markets And Inequalities: Changes In The Cuban Society, Melissa Dreffs
Global Markets And Inequalities: Changes In The Cuban Society, Melissa Dreffs
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The relationship that Cuba has with the United States and global markets is shifting. This project will address the changing mindset of Cuban society in regards to the global markets and internal changes that have already drastically affected the island and will continue to do so. The structure of employment in Cuba has changed, allowing the private and self-employed sectors to grow, while attracting fewer and fewer state employees. Additional analysis of the changing economic system in Cuba shows the increase in foreign investment, both by states and private corporations. This increase affects both national sovereignty and the role of …
Autarky Or Interdependence? U.S. Vs. European Security And Defense Industries In A Globalized Market, Diane Maye Zorri
Autarky Or Interdependence? U.S. Vs. European Security And Defense Industries In A Globalized Market, Diane Maye Zorri
Publications
Globalization theorists show how downward pressure to compete and/or
save costs in global markets will lead producers and consumers to source
goods and services in the cheapest and most efficient manner. However, in
certain sectors, such as the defense industry, security concerns and politics
can overshadow economic logic when it comes to making procurement
decisions. These political and security concerns keep the U.S. defense
industry from using the most cost-effective supply chains and
manufacturing centers, whereas in Europe, post-Cold War socioeconomic
and political realities allowed for more transnational cooperation on
defense procurement. Three cases serve to illustrate the spectrum between …
