The Relationship Between The Behaviors Of The Top 50 Most Endorsed Athletes In The World And The Monetary Value Of Their Endorsement Deals, Rogerio B. Ribeiro
The Relationship Between The Behaviors Of The Top 50 Most Endorsed Athletes In The World And The Monetary Value Of Their Endorsement Deals, Rogerio B. Ribeiro
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The top endorsed athletes in the world are most likely the ones who have the biggest impact on their sport. These athletes are usually among the best in their sport or they might have something special that creates a strong relationship between the athlete and his or her fans. It is possible to say that this relationship combined with their skills on and off of the fields, courts, or arenas is what makes these athletes special. Big companies all over the world feel attracted to these athletes and, as a result, they spend millions of dollars every year in order …

Medieval Nemea: Building A Public Digital Resource, Lauren A. Vagts, Effie Athanassopoulos
UCARE: Research Products
This site presents medieval ceramics from the excavations at the site of Nemea, in southern Greece. We have created a digital resource with results and artifacts from archaeological excavations conducted in the 1970s and 1980s, which have remained unpublished. The website incorporates a variety of materials, including excavation notebooks, maps, data bases, photographs, and 3D models of ceramics. Omeka was selected as the software for this project for several reasons. Omeka offers the Dublin Core metadata as a way to standardize and organize digital data, allowing its users access to a well-developed platform. Omeka is also an open source software …

Background: Only 7.8% of individuals meeting diagnostic criteria for alcohol use disorder (AUD) receive treatment in a given year. Most individuals with AUDs are identified in primary care (PC) settings and referred to substance use disorders (SUD) clinics; however, only a minority of those referred attend treatment services. Safe and effective pharmacological treatments for AUD exist, but they are rarely prescribed by PC providers. The objective of this study is to refine, implement, and evaluate an intervention to integrate pharmacological AUD treatment options into PC settings. This paper provides a detailed description of the intervention design and the evaluation components. …
The Butterfly Effect Of Deceptive Science: How Media Influence May Have Spread The Illusory Link Between Vaccines And Autism, Kami M. Vinton
The Butterfly Effect Of Deceptive Science: How Media Influence May Have Spread The Illusory Link Between Vaccines And Autism, Kami M. Vinton
Communication Theses - Archive
Delaying or refusing childhood vaccinations can increase a community’s risk of vaccine-preventable diseases. Agenda setting theory demonstrates that media can influence people's attitudes and opinions. One study in 1998 asserted that a vaccine/autism link existed, giving birth to one of the longest held myths in modern medicine. Shortly after its publication, the study was thoroughly discredited, and hundreds of subsequent studies have failed to find any link. Many parents who refuse vaccinations remain unconvinced by traditional science and favor anecdotal, pseudo-scientific accounts of the cause of and treatments for autism. Given the recent resurgence of once-eradicated vaccine-preventable diseases, it is …
Climate Change Planning In Dallas-Fort Worth: Discourse And Public Participation In A Politically Conservative Region, Ann W. Foss
Climate Change Planning In Dallas-Fort Worth: Discourse And Public Participation In A Politically Conservative Region, Ann W. Foss
Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges currently facing our world, and in the field of planning there has been much attention paid to climate action planning by environmental leader cities. However, political controversy surrounds climate change in the United States, making it difficult for some cities and regions to explicitly and effectively respond to climate change. This dissertation examines planning actions related to the federal Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant, and climate change more broadly, in the politically conservative Dallas-Fort Worth region of Texas from 2005 to 2015. In particular, the research strives to better understand the …
A Comparison Of Magnet Schools To Traditional Schools: Application Of Critical Education Theory, Gregory Dale Cartwright
A Comparison Of Magnet Schools To Traditional Schools: Application Of Critical Education Theory, Gregory Dale Cartwright
Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive
After considerable research, it was determined that a research gap exists that examines the overall impact of school choice concerning magnet and traditional high schools. The timing is especially critical in Texas with the passing of House Bill 5, which attempts to loosen the stranglehold of standardized testing. High schools will be given the opportunity to provide creative educational opportunities to students. Many school districts are transitioning to pathway programs in an attempt to increase the academic performance of an urban population as well as high school completion. Accordingly, this dissertation attempts to operationalize critical education theory, by comparing traditional …

Institutional Repositories: Characteristics, Benefits And Software Platforms, Ping Fu, Liu Hua
Library Scholarship
Based on the theories and practices of institutional repositories (IRs),this paper reviews and summarizes definitions, features, development, benefits and software systems selection process. Hopefully it will provide insight and bring inspiration to those domestic libraries and interested parties planning to work in this area. The authors take Central Washington University Library as a case study to illustrate an approach to implement an IR within a short time frame. IRs have many merits, including collecting and showing an institution's scholarly output. There are four or five main software platforms for institutions to choose from. An institution can decide to adopt one depending on its …
Working For Food Stamps: Economic Citizenship And The Post-Fordist Welfare State In New York City, Maggie Dickinson
Working For Food Stamps: Economic Citizenship And The Post-Fordist Welfare State In New York City, Maggie Dickinson
Publications and Research
In the United States, the number of people receiving state-subsidized food aid has risen dramatically since 2001. This increase complicates the well-worn story that the post-Fordist welfare state has been continuously cut back in the neoliberal era, indicating instead that it is expanding to subsidize poor workers’ participation in the formal labor market. In New York City, welfare office workers operationalize policies that ease access to food assistance for poor workers who can demonstrate that they are formally employed. Meanwhile, workfare programs punish the unemployed and marginal workers by making them work for food stamps. This conservative, paternalistic welfare regime …
The Priorities And Accomplishments Of Kentucky Legislators : Is There A Gender Difference?, Amanda Allen
The Priorities And Accomplishments Of Kentucky Legislators : Is There A Gender Difference?, Amanda Allen
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
This thesis uses Kentucky as a case study of gender differences in the policy priorities and perceptions of accomplishments of state legislators. The research question is, “are there gender differences in the legislative priorities and perceptions of accomplishments of Kentucky legislators?” The legislative priorities of the legislators seemed to be similar, along with their own classification of women’s issues. The perceptions of success demonstrated that male legislators were not necessarily more likely to attribute success to themselves, whereas women would attribute success to collaboration efforts. The research was completed through confidential interviews with Kentucky legislators and analysis of the 2015 …
The Regret Elements Scale: Distinguishing The Emotional And Cognitive Components Of Regret, Joshua Buchanan, Amy Summerville, Jennifer Lehmann, Jochen Reb
The Regret Elements Scale: Distinguishing The Emotional And Cognitive Components Of Regret, Joshua Buchanan, Amy Summerville, Jennifer Lehmann, Jochen Reb
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Regret is one of the most common emotions, but researchers generally measure it in an ad-hoc, unvalidated fashion. Three studies outline the construction and validation of the Regret Elements Scale (RES), which distinguishes between an affective component of regret, associated with maladaptive affective outcomes, and a cognitive component of regret, associated with functional preparatory outcomes. The present research demonstrates the RES’s relationship with distress (Study 1), appraisals of emotions (Study 2), and existing measures of regret (Study 3). We further demonstrate the RES’s ability to differentiate regret from other negative emotions (Study 2) and related traits (Study 3). The scale …

Corporate Social Responsibility On Twitter, Rachel E. Deems
Journalism Undergraduate Honors Theses
Through content analysis of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on Twitter, this study examines how the country’s top and largest corporations in each of the main industries portray CSR on Twitter. The study investigates the agenda-setting potential of the CSR tweets based upon the variables examined, including (a) CSR dimension, (b) CSR topic, (c) tone, (d) stakeholders, (e) Twitter attributes, and (f) Twitter interactivity. The results indicate that CSR tweets predominantly portray the discretionary level of CSR, regardless of industry, predominantly include topics of public philanthropy, especially service-producing industries, and positive tone was used most frequently across industries. The community was …
Exploring Bicycle And Public Transit Use By Low-Income Latino Immigrants: A Mixed-Methods Study In The San Francisco Bay Area, Jesus M. Barajas, Daniel G. Chatman, Asha W. Agrawal
Exploring Bicycle And Public Transit Use By Low-Income Latino Immigrants: A Mixed-Methods Study In The San Francisco Bay Area, Jesus M. Barajas, Daniel G. Chatman, Asha W. Agrawal
Mineta Transportation Institute
Latin American immigrants will continue to make up a large share of transit ridership, bicycling and walking in the United States for the foreseeable future, but there is relatively little research about them. This mixed-methods study compares the travel patterns of low-income immigrants living in the San Francisco Bay Area with that of other groups and investigates the barriers and constraints faced by low-income immigrants when taking transit and bicycling. Much of the previous work on immigrant travel has relied on national surveys and qualitative analysis, which underrepresent disadvantaged population groups and slower modes of travel, or are unable to …

Context-Aware Advertisement Recommendation For High-Speed Social News Feeding, Yuchen Li, Dongxiang Zhang, Ziquan Lan, Kian-Lee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Social media advertising is a multi-billion dollar market and has become the major revenue source for Facebook and Twitter. To deliver ads to potentially interested users, these social network platforms learn a prediction model for each user based on their personal interests. However, as user interests often evolve slowly, the user may end up receiving repetitive ads. In this paper, we propose a context-aware advertising framework that takes into account the relatively static personal interests as well as the dynamic news feed from friends to drive growth in the ad click-through rate. To meet the real-time requirement, we first propose …
#Greysanatomy Vs. #Yankees: Demographics And Hashtag Use On Twitter, Jisun An, Ingmar Weber
#Greysanatomy Vs. #Yankees: Demographics And Hashtag Use On Twitter, Jisun An, Ingmar Weber
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Demographics, in particular, gender, age, and race, are a key predictor of human behavior. Despite the significant effect that demographics plays, most scientific studies using online social media do not consider this factor, mainly due to the lack of such information. In this work, we use state-of-the-art face analysis software to infer gender, age, and race from profile images of 350K Twitter users from New York. For the period from November 1, 2014 to October 31, 2015, we study which hashtags are used by different demographic groups. Though we find considerable overlap for the most popular hashtags, there are also …

Cultural And Economic Factors That Influence Brazilian Public Opinion On Climate Change, Jenna Williams
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Climate change is a commons problem of global proportions. The effects of climate change threaten not only the natural world, but also the human systems that we have established (IPCC 2014, 4). The devastating effects of climate change will not be confined to those regions of the world that have contributed the most to this problem. Already, every continent and ocean has been touched by climate change (IPCC 2014, 4).

The Capm Is Not Dead, Muhammad Ahmed Saleem Baig
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) is among the earliest and most widely used security valuation models. Since its inception, CAPM has been criticized more than it has been appreciated. Although, it has been criticized both empirically and theoretically, it is still one of the most extensively used methods for the calculation of equity betas and returns throughout the globe. Among the most significant implications of the model is that the expected stock returns are determined by their corresponding level of systematic risk and not the idiosyncratic risk. According to much of the recent literature it is referred to as …

Does The Market Matter For More Than Investment?, Yiwei Zhang
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Does the market matter for more than investment? by Jason Smith examines how themultiple effects of the market (through stock prices) can affect a corporation. The mainfindings are that low stock prices precede lower costs and lower investments. The maininnovation of this work is showing that the market can matter for more than a simpleinvestment. Low stock prices imply that the market may disagree with investment and leadthe manager to reduce costs. This result does not appear to be driven by financial constraints.
Price Volatility And Structural Breaks In U.S. Dairy Markets, Morgan James Baldwin
Price Volatility And Structural Breaks In U.S. Dairy Markets, Morgan James Baldwin
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This paper examines whether price volatility has increased for the all-milk price and milk margin over the past 25 years. It focuses on the impact of export and attempts to establish the existence of structural changes in the market. Various models are applied to analyze the stated question and results discussed. This paper finds that there was a distinct structural break in the milk price and possibly in the milk margin. Trade has limited correlation to volatility in the milk margin and milk price.
Reanalyzing The Political Stability Of Britain's Democratization, Nathan R. Burton
Reanalyzing The Political Stability Of Britain's Democratization, Nathan R. Burton
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
A recent article in Journal of Economic History by Dasgupta and Ziblatt uses bond yields to analyze the political risk of the 19th century democratization legislation of Britain known as the Reform Acts. Dasgupta and Ziblatt find that the volatility of yields is relatively high during periods of legislation, and model the yields via GAM method, concluding that the political risk associated with the Reform Acts was high. I reproduce the study and comparing those times of 'high' volatility to all periods and find nothing to compare high-volatility periods to, suggesting that it is inconclusive whether the Reform Acts were …
A Monte Carlo Study On The Persistence Of Variance With Garch, Aristides Romero Moreno
A Monte Carlo Study On The Persistence Of Variance With Garch, Aristides Romero Moreno
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The GARCH model is widely used to forecast volatility for economic and financial Data. There are, however, several shortcomings of using the simple GARCH estimator alone for forecasting volatility. The major issue with the use of the default GARCH model is the persistence of variance that evolves through time and the simple GARCH model fails to address. This paper looks at the GARCH(1,1) model and consistent with Lamoureux and Lastrapes (1990), finds that it overstates the persistence of variance due to model misspecification, specifically the lack of structural shifts.
Continuing Conversations: The Image Of Richard Nixon In Political Cartoons, Megan Sanderson
Continuing Conversations: The Image Of Richard Nixon In Political Cartoons, Megan Sanderson
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Historians have extensively researched and reported on the images presented by United States presidents. Political cartoons have been an effective means of depicting government figures’ behaviors, actions and deficiencies. The goal of this thesis is to examine images of President Richard Nixon as captured in political cartoons, with particular attention to the themes represented in works following the President’s key speeches. Nixon’s “Address to the Nation on the War in Vietnam” (1969), “Toasts of the President and Premier Chou En-lai of China at a Banquet Honoring the Premier in Peking” (1972), and the “Question-and-Answer Session at the Annual Convention of …

Living With Loss: A Tv Pilot, Jamie Savarese
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
A process – that is what writing a script is. The hard part is not the writing, but knowing what to write. The process is a period of months where there is no written dialogue, instead, endless research, brainstorming, and outlining. The hard part is not the words, those come naturally; the hard part is developing a world in which your characters can effectively tell their stories and portray a deeper truth. Living With Loss is a full feature screenplay. The plot is structured around the main character, Elena Wellington, who has to cope with the death of her best …

Cleveland’S Greater University Circle Initiative: An Anchor-Based Strategy For Change, Walter Wright, Kathryn W. Hexter, Nick Downer
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
Cities are increasingly turning to their “anchor” institutions as drivers of economic development, harnessing the power of these major economic players to benefit the neighborhoods where they are rooted. This is especially true for cities that are struggling with widespread poverty and disinvestment. Urban anchors— typically hospitals and universities—have sometimes isolated themselves from the poor and struggling neighborhoods that surround them. But this is changing. Since the late 1990s, as population, jobs, and investment have migrated outward, these “rooted in place” institutions are becoming a key to the long, hard work of revitalization. In Cleveland, the Greater University Circle Initiative …
A Narrative Inquiry Of Protest Songs: Comparing The Anti-War Music Of Vietnam And Iraq, Sophia K. Yanik
A Narrative Inquiry Of Protest Songs: Comparing The Anti-War Music Of Vietnam And Iraq, Sophia K. Yanik
Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Honors Theses
This research examines the social role of protest music in wartime eras through lyrical content analysis. By analyzing songs across the Vietnam War era and the Iraq War era, the shifting role of protest music across generations reveals not only how this music influences and encourages different social aggregates, but also how it adapts to remain relevant in a continuously modernizing American society. This research thus serves to demonstrate the impact of narratives in social movements and the sway narratives have in shaping public perspectives through their encouragement of solidarity between diverse social groups. Methodology includes narrative analysis of two …
Mindfulness And Mind-Wandering: The Impact Of Brief Interventions On Child Affect, Arousal, And Cognition, Catherine A. Spann
Mindfulness And Mind-Wandering: The Impact Of Brief Interventions On Child Affect, Arousal, And Cognition, Catherine A. Spann
Psychology Dissertations - Archive
The ability to self-regulate is critical for healthy development and life success. Recent evidence from the field of contemplative science suggests that mindfulness may enhance self-regulation among children and adolescents. It is unclear whether beneficial effects are only realized when practiced over time or if changes can occur within short time frames. This research adds to the growing literature on mindfulness and self-control by testing whether brief mindfulness practice produces changes in self-control compared to similarly restful states. The current study also explored mechanisms by which practicing mindfulness may impact self-control, specifically focusing on positive affect and arousal. A between-subjects, …

Developing Housing Finance Framework As An Approach To Provide Affordable Finance Mechanisms For Middle Income Citizens And Housing Developers In Saudi Arabia, Musaed Khalid-Ak Alqannas
Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive
With high economic growth rate, population rate, increased employment, and income opportunities, the demand for housing has increased, along with the lack of affordable finance mechanisms. A main concern of the housing problem in Saudi Arabia is the high demand compared to housing needs. Saudi Arabia lacks a housing finance framework or strategy to create flexible and affordable lending mechanisms to tackle the affordable finance problems. This research targets: 1) the middle income citizens to increase the homeownership rate and 2) the housing developer to increase affordable housing units and the investment in the housing market. This research compares the …

Women’S Adoption Of Egalitarian Attitudes Through Employment In Mexico, Jeyle Ortiz Rodriguez
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation examines the impact of female employment on Mexican women’s attitudes toward gender equality. Specifically, the objective was to analyze different mechanisms and moderating variables through which female employment affects married and cohabiting women’s adoption of egalitarian attitudes in Mexico. The focus of the analysis was to identify the direct and indirect effects of women’s participation in the labor market through social interactions and housework. Despite the importance of women’s attitudes toward gender equality in their advancement and egalitarian gender relationships, there is a lack of studies that examine this topic in Mexico. The objectives of this dissertation were …
