Agent-Based Model Simulating Pedestrian Behavioral Response To Environmental Structural Changes, Amy Lobben, Christopher Bone Jun 2016

Agent-Based Model Simulating Pedestrian Behavioral Response To Environmental Structural Changes, Amy Lobben, Christopher Bone

TREC Final Reports

Our research focused on understanding the travel behavior of individuals in complex urban environments. Specifically, we investigated how land use patterns and infrastructure influence how individuals across a broad range of travel abilities navigate through urban landscapes. Our overall project goal was to develop a transportation planning tool that allows users to simulate pedestrian travel behavior. The tool was built on a computation model that was developed through rigorous measures and observations of pedestrian travel behavior. Our definition of pedestrian includes a broad perspective as one of our aspirations through this project was to expand the definition of what constitutes …

Identifying Criminals’ Risk Preferences, Murat C. Mungan, Jonathan Klick Jun 2016

Identifying Criminals’ Risk Preferences, Murat C. Mungan, Jonathan Klick

Faculty Scholarship

There is a 250-year-old presumption in the criminology and law enforcement literature that people are deterred more by increases in the certainty rather than increases in the severity of legal sanctions. We call this presumption the Certainty Aversion Presumption (CAP). Simple criminal decision-making models suggest that criminals must be risk seeking if they behave consistently with CAP. This implication leads to disturbing interpretations, such as criminals being categorically different from law-abiding people, who often display risk-averse behavior while making financial decisions. Moreover, policy discussions that incorrectly rely on criminals’ risk attitudes implied by CAP are ill informed, and may therefore …

Septal Oxytocin Administration Impairs Peer Affiliation Via V1a Receptors In Female Meadow Voles, Allison M.J. Anacker, Jennifer D. Christensen, Elyssa M. Laflamme, Diana M. Grunberg, Annaliese K. Beery Jun 2016

Septal Oxytocin Administration Impairs Peer Affiliation Via V1a Receptors In Female Meadow Voles, Allison M.J. Anacker, Jennifer D. Christensen, Elyssa M. Laflamme, Diana M. Grunberg, Annaliese K. Beery

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

The peptide hormone oxytocin (OT) plays an important role in social behaviors, including social bond formation. In different contexts, however, OT is also associated with aggression, social selectivity, and reduced affiliation. Female meadow voles form social preferences for familiar same-sex peers under short, winter-like day lengths in the laboratory, and provide a means of studying affiliation outside the context of reproductive pair bonds. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that the actions of OT in the lateral septum (LS) may decrease affiliative behavior, including greater density of OT receptors in the LS of meadow voles that huddle less. We infused OT …

Effects Of The Affordable Care Act On Part-Time Employment: Early Evidence, Marcus Dillender, Carolyn J. Heinrich, Susan N. Houseman (Corresponding Author) Jun 2016

Effects Of The Affordable Care Act On Part-Time Employment: Early Evidence, Marcus Dillender, Carolyn J. Heinrich, Susan N. Houseman (Corresponding Author)

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires employers with at least 50 full-time-equivalent employees to offer “affordable” health insurance to employees working 30 or more hours per week. If employers do not comply with the mandate, they may face substantial financial penalties. Employers can potentially circumvent the mandate by reducing weekly hours below the 30-hour threshold or by using other nonstandard employment arrangements (direct-hire temporaries, agency temporaries, small contractors, and independent contractors). We examine the effects of the ACA on short-hours, part-time employment. Using monthly CPS data, we estimate that the ACA resulted in an increase in low-hours, involuntary part-time employment …

An Investigation Of Associations Between Heart Rate Measures Of Aerobic Fitness And Executive Functioning In Pre-Adolescent Children, Kimberly Anne Barnett Jun 2016

An Investigation Of Associations Between Heart Rate Measures Of Aerobic Fitness And Executive Functioning In Pre-Adolescent Children, Kimberly Anne Barnett

Student Works

The present study evaluated the associations between direct measures of aerobic fitness and executive functioning in pre-adolescent children aged 8 to 12 years. To evaluate these associations, the study employed a cross-sectional design and a series of three step hierarchical regressions were conducted. Results suggest that after controlling for age, sex, and BMI percentile, heart rate measures of aerobic fitness did not independently predict executive function. These findings provide preliminary evidence that contradicts a growing body of research within the adult literature demonstrating an association between aerobic fitness and executive function.

Support The Library, Support The University: Communicating The Value And Impact Of The Library, Marilyn K. Moody

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

What is the value and impact of the library on the university, and how do you communicate it to others? How do you frame the conversation about library value with both external and internal audiences? Given the rapidly changing library and higher education environment, what are meaningful ways to discuss the value of libraries with donors and alumni whose own experiences as students may have been very different? What key messages about the library engage and resonate, and how can you identify and convey those messages?

Learning From Texts: Activation Of Information From Previous Texts During Reading, Katinka Beker, Dietsje Jolles, Robert F. Lorch Jr., Paul Van Den Broek Jun 2016

Learning From Texts: Activation Of Information From Previous Texts During Reading, Katinka Beker, Dietsje Jolles, Robert F. Lorch Jr., Paul Van Den Broek

Psychology Faculty Publications

Learning often involves integration of information from multiple texts. The aim of the current study was to determine whether relevant information from previously read texts is spontaneously activated during reading, allowing for integration between texts (experiment 1 and 2), and whether this process is related to the representation of the texts (experiment 2). In both experiments, texts with inconsistent target sentences were preceded by texts that either did or did not contain explanations that resolved the inconsistencies. In experiment 1, the reading times of the target sentences introducing inconsistencies were faster if the preceding text contained an explanation for the …

The Impact Of The Timing Of The Intergenerational Farm Transfer Initiation On The Terminal Wealth In The Business: Simulation Model, Iuliia Protopop Jun 2016

The Impact Of The Timing Of The Intergenerational Farm Transfer Initiation On The Terminal Wealth In The Business: Simulation Model, Iuliia Protopop

Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study presents a conceptual framework and empirical farm-level model of wealth creation and accumulation of the farm business and incorporates the changes in life-cycle patterns in farmer productivity and consumption of the older and younger generation. This method provides a vehicle to analyze the timing of farm transfer initiation and its impact on the terminal wealth in the business and the likelihood of the firm’s future continuity.

The results of a representative large grain farm (more than $250,000 in gross sales, and $4 million in real estate) in Iowa confirm that the timing of a transfer is determined by …

Predicting Sexual Revictimization In Childhood And Adolescence: A Prospective Examination Using Ecological Systems Theory, Samantha L. Pittenger Jun 2016

Predicting Sexual Revictimization In Childhood And Adolescence: A Prospective Examination Using Ecological Systems Theory, Samantha L. Pittenger

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Child sexual abuse is a prevalent problem in the United States and is associated with revictimization: a victimization episode perpetrated by a different individual and occurring subsequent to initial abuse experiences (Barnes, Noll, Putnam, & Trickett, 2009). While evidence shows that 20-39% of sexual abuse victims report revictimization within childhood or adolescence, much of the research to date has focused on its occurrence in adulthood. Thus, there is a limited understanding of the pathways to revictimization and its associated outcomes for youth. The present study examined predictors of sexual revictimization within childhood and adolescence using ecological theory, which includes individual, …

Examination Of Methamphetamine Reinstatement In Female And Male Rats: A Pre-Clinical Model Of Relapse, Steven T. Pittenger Jun 2016

Examination Of Methamphetamine Reinstatement In Female And Male Rats: A Pre-Clinical Model Of Relapse, Steven T. Pittenger

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Methamphetamine (meth) dependence is often characterized by persistent and chronic relapse (i.e., return to drug use). There is growing pre-clinical and human evidence suggesting females are at greater risk to relapse. The set of studies presented in this dissertation extended this limited evidence by identifying sex-dependent neural substrates correlated with meth-triggered reinstatement (Experiment 1) and by examining sex-differences in reinstatement triggered by drugs of abuse that are commonly co-abused with meth (Experiment 2). Female and male rats were trained to self-administer meth, received subsequent extinction sessions, and then tested for reinstatement. In Experiment 1, rats were perfused following reinstatement testing …

Regional And Multilateral Institutional Arrangements In Africa: Rethinking The Imperatives Of Economic Diversification And Trade Development In Nigeria., Harrison O. Okafor

Bullion

This paper critically assesses the implications of the multilateral trading system along the increasing but asymmetric interface between multilateral and regional institution on African economies with particular evidence for Nigeria. The issues relating to market access, export diversification and supply response to incentives derived from the various agreements provided basis for this reasoned analysis vis-à-vis the implications for growth and trade development imperatives. lt is revealed that the multilateral trading system has not benefited the SSA particularly Nigeria, relative to other regions like Asia. Perhaps. internal and external constraints associated with poor economic fundamentals, asymmetries between the rules of the …

Is The Effect Of Procedural Justice On Police Legitimacy Invariant? Testing The Generality Of Procedural Justice And Competing Antecedents Of Legitimacy, Scott E. Wolfe, Justin Nix, Robert Kaminski, Jeff Rojek

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Objectives

This study tests the generality of Tyler’s process-based model of policing by examining whether the effect of procedural justice and competing variables (i.e., distributive justice and police effectiveness) on police legitimacy evaluations operate in the same manner across individual and situational differences.

Methods

Data from a random sample of mail survey respondents are used to test the “invariance thesis” (N = 1681). Multiplicative interaction effects between the key antecedents of legitimacy (measured separately for obligation to obey and trust in the police) and various demographic categories, prior experiences, and perceived neighborhood conditions are estimated in a series of multivariate …

The Impact Of Anti-Gay Politics On The Lgbtq Movement, Amy L. Stone Jun 2016

The Impact Of Anti-Gay Politics On The Lgbtq Movement, Amy L. Stone

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research

Since the late 1970s, the Religious Right has mobilized to oppose the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) movement in the United States. Sociologists have studied the relationship between these two movements as a classic movement-countermovement dynamic, in which the strategies, actions, and framing of one movement impact the other. I analyze the way Religious Right reactive and proactive opposition to gay rights has affected the LGBTQ movement. First, I provide an overview of the literature on the negative impacts of the Religious Right, including the diversion of movement goals, transformation of frames, and marginalization of queer politics. Second, …

The Huron River, located in the Great Lakes Region, Michigan, USA is a symbol of success, wealth and prosperity to the residents of Southeast Michigan. In the last 20 years, the river has been subject to degradation due to high growth rates of urban cities and often experience the cumulative effects of channelization, pollution from point and nonpoint sources, as well as a decline in wetland area and quality. Urbanization in watersheds of stream channels has intensified many incidences of flooding in metropolitan areas over the past few decades. Causes for the decrease in the capacity of the Huron River …

The Effects Of A Wisdom Intervention In A Christian Congregation, Paul T. Mclaughlin Jun 2016

The Effects Of A Wisdom Intervention In A Christian Congregation, Paul T. Mclaughlin

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Psychological research on the topic of wisdom is limited in its incorporation of religion and spirituality. This gap in psychological literature may serve to limit a thorough understanding of wisdom, which has strong historical and contemporary links to religion and faith communities. Positive psychology, with its interest in both spirituality and wisdom, may allow for some rapprochement in wisdom and spirituality. In collaboration with leaders of a local Friends (Quaker) congregation, this study investigated the effects of a spiritually informed wisdom intervention delivered in the context of a faith community. Participants for the study consisted of 27 young adults (24 …
