Parental Involvement And Child Achievement In School Among Interracial Marriage And Same-Race Marriage: Comparison Of White-White, Asian-Asian, And White-Asian Families, Can Cheng

Theses and Dissertations

Does the parental involvement of interracial families have different effects on children's academic achievement compared to same-race families? This study compares parental involvement in children's education and the academic outcomes of White-Asian families and White and Asian families. Five dimensions of parental involvement are examined: educational expectations, school involvement, home involvement, parental control and parental social networks. Based on data from The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, generalized estimating equations (GEEs) are used to analyze the variability of academic achievement produced by the interaction of involvement dimensions and family types. Asian mother-White father families rank the highest in most forms of …

Oregon Population Forecast Program

Different growth patterns occur in different parts of the County and these local trends within the UGBs and the area outside UGBs collectively influence population growth rates for the county as a whole.

Morrow County’s total population has grown slowly since 2000, with average annual growth rates of less than half percent between 2000 and 2010 (Figure 1); however, some of its sub-areas experienced more rapid population growth during the 2000s. Boardman, the most populous UGB, and Irrigon posted the highest average annual growth rates at 1.0 and 0.5 percent, respectively, during the 2000 to 2010 period.

Morrow County’s positive …

Peasant Revolts As Anti-Authoritarian Archetypes For Radical Buddhism In Modern Japan, James Mark Shields Jun 2016

Peasant Revolts As Anti-Authoritarian Archetypes For Radical Buddhism In Modern Japan, James Mark Shields

Faculty Journal Articles

The late Meiji period (1868-1912) witnessed the birth of various forms of “progressive” and “radical” Buddhism both within and beyond traditional Japanese Buddhist institutions. This paper examines several historical precedents for “Buddhist revolution” in East Asian—and particularly Japanese—peasant rebellions of the early modern period. I argue that these rebellions, or at least the received narratives of such, provided significant “root paradigms” for the thought and practice of early Buddhist socialists and radical Buddhists of early twentieth century Japan. Even if these narratives ended in “failure”—as, indeed, they often did—they can be understood as examples of what James White calls “expressionistic …

Career Opportunities: Connecting Design Students With Industry, M. Genevieve Hitchings

Publications and Research

Given an era of rapid advances in communications and graphic techniques, students of design need exposure to the hectic, highly competitive world of design – well before their student days are over. Is the design hub of New York a closed circuit among industries led by alumni from private colleges and universities? Are student opportunities and career outcomes significantly different depending on the type of institution they attend, rather than the type of degree they earn? In looking at five design institutions in New York City (New York City College of Technology (CUNY), Fashion Institute of Technology (SUNY), Pratt Institute, …

Public Assistance Of Police During Criminal Investigations: Russian Experience, Olga B. Semukhina Jun 2016

Public Assistance Of Police During Criminal Investigations: Russian Experience, Olga B. Semukhina

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This study examines the high levels of public unwillingness to assist police in criminal investigations in Russia. Variables of public trust of police, fear of crime, victimization, and prior contact with police are used to explain this phenomenon. Also included in the study are variables of police fear and avoidance of police. The findings suggest that higher levels of distrust in, as well as fear and avoidance of police are strong predictors of citizens’ unwillingness to assist police in Russia. The paper discusses potential implications of these findings for the 2011 police reform in Russia.

Texting Etiquette And Its Effects On Our Perceptions Of Intimate Relationships, Taylor Clarke

Communication Studies

Abstract

This study seeks to understand the association between texting habits and characteristics and partner perceptions of intimate relationships. This study investigates multiple aspects of texting such as: temporality, participants’ perceived satisfaction with their significant other, length of text messages, frequency of communication, among others. It is hypothesized that texting etiquette and its various sub-components will be influential in how participants will rate their level of satisfaction (closeness, intimacy, emotional support, and effort) with their significant other. Ten in-depth interviews were conducted with college-aged participants. They were asked questions regarding the texting etiquette of their significant other as well as …

Lust For Lulu: An Examination Of Lululemon Athletica's Marketing Authenticity And Branding, Sara Sousa

Communication Studies

Lululemon Athletica, a brand built upon the values of balance, harmony, and culture, has one of the most unique and modern methods of advertising of any retailer today, but sometimes being unique can either elevate a brand or bring it down in flames. The brand has experimented with many different advertisement campaigns as a way to engage consumers and promote a lifestyle; some have proven successful while others have stirred up controversy and turmoil for the brand. Honesty and authenticity are not only traits valued as human characteristics, they are also highly valued in the marketing and advertising realm. Marketing …

Towards A Community College Pin@Y Praxis: Creating An Inclusive Cultural Space, Atheneus C. Ocampo Jun 2016

Towards A Community College Pin@Y Praxis: Creating An Inclusive Cultural Space, Atheneus C. Ocampo

LMU Theses and Dissertations

Darder (2012), in Culture and Power in the Classroom, argued that a system of educational inequality is promoted through the consistent production and reproduction of contradictions between the dominant culture and subordinate culture. More significantly, she noted that these dominant and subordinate culture contradictions create a necessity for bicultural individuals to navigate the dialectical tensions between dominant and subordinate cultures and the processes by which education perpetuates dynamics of unequal power and reproduces the dominant worldview. Hence, she urged educators to challenge prevalent power structures and re-imagine the process of schooling as a more inclusive form of pedagogy, geared towards …

Planning For Bike Share Connectivity To Rail Transit, Greg P. Griffin, Ipek N. Sener Jun 2016

Planning For Bike Share Connectivity To Rail Transit, Greg P. Griffin, Ipek N. Sener

Journal of Public Transportation

Bike sharing can play a role in providing access to transit stations and then to final destinations, but early implementation of these systems in North America has been opportunistic rather than strategic. This study evaluates local intermodal plan goals using trip data and associated infrastructure such as transit stops and bike share station locations in Austin, Texas, and Chicago, Illinois. Bike sharing use data from both cities suggest a weak relationship with existing rail stations that could be strengthened through collaborative, intermodal planning. The study suggests a planning framework and example language that could be tailored to help address the …

Influence Of Socio-Demography And Operating Streetscape On Last-Mile Mode Choice, M. Meng, P. P. Koh, Y. D. Wong

Journal of Public Transportation

This study investigated how personal and operational factors (travel distance and streetscape) influence traveler mode choice decisions for the last-mile home-bound trip stage from rail transit stations. Personal factors include the socio-demography of travelers, and attributes of the streetscape include the built environment (degree of areal development), prevalence of cycling, availability of short-range transport modes, and walking/cycling infrastructure. Interviewers randomly intercepted pedestrians to administer a mode choice survey at five rail transit station exits and engaged all available cyclists at bicycle parking areas in the vicinity of stations in Singapore. A multimodal logit regression model revealed a significant relationship between …

Transforming Bus Service Planning Using Integrated Electronic Data Sources At Nyc Transit, Jeffrey Hanft, Shrisan Iyer, Brian Levine, Alla Reddy Jun 2016

Transforming Bus Service Planning Using Integrated Electronic Data Sources At Nyc Transit, Jeffrey Hanft, Shrisan Iyer, Brian Levine, Alla Reddy

Journal of Public Transportation

The installation of an Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) system alongside existing Automated Fare Collection (AFC) data spurred development of an inferred bus boarding and alighting ridership model at New York City Transit (NYCT), allowing for 100% passenger origin-destination (O-D) data citywide. Analysis techniques that relied primarily on professional judgment due to lack of data were replaced by more sophisticated statistical techniques. This paper describes two case studies and the resulting service planning potential from having access to fully-integrated big data sources: a neighborhood-wide analysis of performance and ridership, where 100% data allowed planners to pinpoint specific, low-cost reroutes and stop …

Older Adult Transportation In Rural Communities: Results Of An Agency Survey, James P. Wood, Jeffrey R. Brown, Megan Bond, Vitor Suguri

Journal of Public Transportation

The proportion of people over age 65 is higher in U.S. rural and small communities than in urban or suburban areas. When older adults who reside in these communities retire from driving, they may need to rely on alternative transportation options that exist in urban settings but that might not be provided, might be less accessible, or might be available in a different form in their communities. This paper uses a survey of service providers to identify the types of public transportation options available to older adults residing in these communities, as well as the strategies employed to finance, operate, …

Perspective Taking, Empathic Concern, And Personal Distress: A Preliminary Meta-Analytic Study Of Correlates With Self-Esteem And Self-Compassion, Reed M. Mueller

CUP Faculty Research

Given the importance of perspective taking and the associated constructs of empathic concern and personal distress, together with the interest in the varying associations of these constructs with different forms of self-evaluation, a systematic exploration of the correlations of self-esteem and self-compassion with elements of interpersonal reactivity is valuable. In this meta-analysis, I investigate the correlation of these constructs to both self-evaluation frameworks.

Views Of Meaning In Life: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Francophone And American Cultures, Erin A. Mueller Jun 2016

Views Of Meaning In Life: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Francophone And American Cultures, Erin A. Mueller

CUP Faculty Research

The concept of meaning in life is existential in nature; essential to being human yet elusive at times. As Frankl (1959) wrote, “Man’s search for meaning is the primary motivation in his life…This meaning is unique and specific in that it must and can be fulfilled by him alone” (p. 121). Grasping what, exactly, it is composed of can be challenging. Moreover, the question of the universality of what goes into each individual’s meaning in life likely connects with culture. Culture is an inherent part of being human, and it has considerable impact on development. Thus, could there be differences …

The Impact Of Rural Poverty On Women's Health Outcomes In Ethiopia: A Review Of A Walk To Beautiful, Christine A. Wernet Jun 2016

The Impact Of Rural Poverty On Women's Health Outcomes In Ethiopia: A Review Of A Walk To Beautiful, Christine A. Wernet

Societies Without Borders

It is estimated that 2-3 million women worldwide suffer from the debilitating effects of birth injuries such as fistulas. This hidden epidemic is both preventable and highly curable, yet poor women, especially those who live in the rural areas of underdeveloped countries continue to be profoundly negatively impacted physically, psychologically, and socially by this condition. The moving documentary, A Walk to Beautiful, highlights this global problem.

The Male Anti-Circumcision Movement: Ideology, Privilege, And Equity In Social Media, Amanda Kennedy, Lauren M. Sardi Jun 2016

The Male Anti-Circumcision Movement: Ideology, Privilege, And Equity In Social Media, Amanda Kennedy, Lauren M. Sardi

Societies Without Borders

Social media has become a primary way in which various social movements may attempt to gain traction within larger frames of cultural discourse (Obar, Zube, and Lampe 2012). However, not all movements that profess human rights and equality goals are truly egalitarian in their orientation. Many men’s movements are ostensibly about gender equality but fall short of their claims because they fail to come to terms with issues of privilege (Kimmel 2013; Messner 1997, 1998). While the male anti-circumcision movement (sometimes referred to as the Intactivist movement) is less radically anti-feminist and has utilized social media to develop and maintain …
