Mental And Physical Practice: Comparing Their Effects On Hand-Eye Coordination Tasks, Ryan M. Dyck Jun 2016

Mental And Physical Practice: Comparing Their Effects On Hand-Eye Coordination Tasks, Ryan M. Dyck

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The present study aims to determine whether mental or physical practice is more beneficial immediately prior to a hand-eye coordination task. In order to test this the present experiment uses a game similar to beer/water pong, a common party game among college students, and records the amount of cups made. The study uses a pre-test post-test design to account for individual differences on pong playing ability. In between the two tests, participants underwent either mental or physical practice. Two hypotheses are present for this study: first that all participant’s post-test scores will be higher than their pre-test scores, and second, …

Adolescent Self Esteem And Instagram: An Examination Of Posting Behavior, Anna Hill, Lamaja Denman Jun 2016

Adolescent Self Esteem And Instagram: An Examination Of Posting Behavior, Anna Hill, Lamaja Denman

Concordia Journal of Communication Research

Social media is a way that people can communicate and share parts of their lives through the internet ("Social Media", n.d.). Being that the media tends to have an influence on the general public, it has an influence on adolescents as well. Sometimes this influence can be quite negative (Sanders, 2015). Because of this, exploring their connection would be insightful. This study explores how a specific social media site, Instagram, may affect adolescent girls and their self-esteem. The researchers issued a self-esteem questionnaire to a gorup of girls on their self-esteem and compared it to their Instagram profiles. In this …

Recently completed research (Smith et al., 2016) suggests that radicalization toward violence is best viewed as a process – a journey that begins with a less-radical identity and moves toward a more radical identity and corresponding orientation. Efforts to test this theoretical assertion revealed that the process of identity construction involves a variety of behaviors that David Snow has referred to as “identify work” (Snow and Machalek, 1983; Snow and McAdam, 2000; Snow, 2004; Cross and Snow, 2011). One type of identity work –demonstration events – appeared to be particularly relevant to our ability to predict radicalization toward violence and …

Difference Between Detecting Emotional And Non-Emotional Lies, David De La Cruz Jun 2016

Difference Between Detecting Emotional And Non-Emotional Lies, David De La Cruz

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

There are various approaches currently used to detect deception. While many of those approaches encounter different flaws, there is a constant factor that could affect lie detection, intuition. Intuition allows any person to detect some lies, but it also disrupts others, including trained professionals, from accurately detecting deception. When individuals communicate between each other they are able to experience and understand what others are feeling through empathy. Without realizing, people are able to use their intuition, empathy, and emotions to unconsciously detect some deception. However, truth tellers and liars could experience the same emotions regardless of the veracity of their …

In this presentation, join the University Librarian Mary Somerville, McGeorge Assistant Dean for Library Services James Wirrell, and Pacific Health Sciences Librarian Mickel Paris as they discuss the potential of a 3 campus Pacific repository, and show how the Arthur A. …

The Impact Of Restricting A Jury’S Access To Visual Information About A Defendant, Krystia Grembocki Jun 2016

The Impact Of Restricting A Jury’S Access To Visual Information About A Defendant, Krystia Grembocki

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

A primary problem with the current criminal justice system in the United States is that it almost solely relies on a jury to determine whether a defendant is guilty or not guilty of committing a crime. While this system has been in place for many years, it is flawed because it ignores the fact that people tend to make judgments based on extralegal factors, or variables that are not related to a case, which may lead them to have implicit biases toward or against an alleged offender. Previous findings indicate that extralegal factors that impact juries include gender, race and …

Group Empathy Theory: The Effect Of Group Empathy On U.S. Intergroup Attitudes And Behavior In The Context Of Immigration Threats, Cigdem Sirin, Nicholas Valentino, José Villalobos

Selected Works Temporary Series

Group Empathy Theory posits empathy felt by members of one group can boost support for another even when the groups are in direct competition for rights, security, and resources. We employ our theory to explain divergent reactions of majority versus minority groups to immigration threats. We conduct a two-wave national survey experiment with 1,799 participants consisting of a randomized sample of Anglos and randomized, stratified oversamples of African Americans and Latinos. The experiment manipulates racial/ethnic cues in a vignette depicting an ambiguous yet potentially threatening incident at an immigrant detention center. African Americans and Latinos are significantly more likely to …

An Epistemic Justification For Voting, Julia Maskivker Jun 2016

An Epistemic Justification For Voting, Julia Maskivker

Faculty Publications

Received wisdom in most democracies is that voting should be seen as a political freedom that citizens have a right to exercise or not to exercise. But would liberal democracies be any less liberal if voting were seen as a duty? Contrasting the libertarian argument against the moral duty to vote, this paper proposes that we have a duty to vote well – with knowledge and a sense of impartiality. The obligation is one among many instantiations of a natural duty to promote and support just institutions in society. The paper links justice with democratic epistemic virtues to ground the …
