Etiology And Stability Of Problem Gambling, Robert Williams, Rachel A. Volberg
Etiology And Stability Of Problem Gambling, Robert Williams, Rachel A. Volberg
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
Prevention of problem gambling hinges on having research that clearly identifies the variables that are etiologically involved, their temporal sequence, and their causal connections. Longitudinal research is the best way of disentangling the chronology and causal relationships between variables. The present research describes the results of the two major longitudinal studies of gambling in Canada: the Quinte Longitudinal Study (QLS) (n = 4,121) and the Leisure, Lifestyle, Lifecycle Project (LLLP) (n = 1,808). The first part of the presentation describes the stability of gambling classifications over a 5 year period. This is followed by an identification of the univariate and …

Exposure-Type Social Buffering Of Predator-Induced Fear Behavior In Young Domestic Chicks, Sara Mitchell, Haley West, Sarah English, Ethan Harrod, Caleb Ivey, Jennifer Vanderpool, Shara Stough
Exposure-Type Social Buffering Of Predator-Induced Fear Behavior In Young Domestic Chicks, Sara Mitchell, Haley West, Sarah English, Ethan Harrod, Caleb Ivey, Jennifer Vanderpool, Shara Stough
Celebration of Learning
It is well-known that social support before, during or after a fear-inducing event can reduce a variety of fear responses in humans and animals (Hostinar, Sullivan, & Gunnar, 2014). This phenomenon, known as social buffering, is relevant to the study of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Secure attachments with caregivers early in childhood critically impact the development of the hypothamalic-pituitary-adrenal axis that mediates the stress response (Gunnar, Brodersen, Nachmias, Buss & Rigatuso, 1996), and perceived social support before and after a traumatic event has been shown to reduce the severity of PTSD symptoms (Ozer, Best, Lipsey & Weiss, 2003). In the …

Gambling And The Millennial Generation: A Segmentation Study, Jason Allsopp, Darcen Esau, Don Feeney, Paul Lauzon, Todd Maki, Rose S. Wong
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
This presentation will discuss the results of a segmentation study done in Minnesota on the gambllng habits of the Millennial Generation. While much of the work done on this generation (or others)focuses on central tendencies, this study was designed to explore the diversity in the gambling behavior, motivations, and attitudes of Minnesotans between the ages of 18 and 35. The authors will demonstrate the wide range of gambling behavior and beliefs within this generation, and discuss the importance of understanding these differences for the gambling industry, public policy, responsible gambling, and problem gambling awareness, treatment, and prevention.
A Multidisciplinary Approach To Understanding Gambling And The Millennial Generation, Don Feeney
A Multidisciplinary Approach To Understanding Gambling And The Millennial Generation, Don Feeney
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
While numerous studies have been done on the gambling habits of the Millennial Generation, we can learn much about their reaction to gambling through an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates insights from demography, cultural anthropology, history, sociology and other fields. In particular, an analysis of formative experiences and how they differ from previous generations tells us much about their gambling behavior and attitudes. In addition to a discussion of key findings, the presentation will focus on the implications of these findings for the gambling industry and for programs that raise awareness of, prevent, and treat gambling problems.

Parents’ Perception Of Youth Gambling And Other Risk Behaviors, Valentina Kranzelic, Neven Ricijas, Dora Dodig Hundric, Toni Maglica, Martina Feric
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
Recently conducted national prevalence study of youth gambling in Croatia indicated high prevalence of adolescent gambling (especially sports betting), as well as perceived parental acceptance of such behavior (Ricijas et al, 2011). As international research suggest positive correlations between parental perception of gambling and other risk behaviors with the intensity of their childrens' participation in these behaviors (Meerkamper, Derevensky, Cutajar, 2008; Farrington, Loeber, Ttofi, 2011; Cambell et al, 2011), a new study on parental perception of gambling is currently being conducted, using two comparable perspectives - parents and their adolescent children.
Research is being conducted in two largest Croatian cities …

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
Context. Both early initiation into gambling (Rahman et al., 2012; Slutske et al., 2014) and conduct problems (Welte et al., 2009, 2011) have been identified as independent risk factors for later gambling problems. However, few longitudinal studies have examined the associations between these two risk factors, as well as their predictive relationship with gambling initiation among children and adolescents. Research Question. Are conduct problems a risk factor for early initiation into gambling, over and above other known risk factors?
Method. This study used data from an ongoing prospective, longitudinal study at the Université de Sherbrooke in order to examine gambling …

Psychiatric Comorbidities In Gambling And The Clubsnsw Chaplaincy Program (Australia), Melanie Hartmann, Alex Blaszczynski, Rowan Cameron
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
A recent systematic review of population studies conducted over the last 12 years indicated that 57.5% of individuals meeting criteria for a gambling disorder have a comorbid substance use disorder, 60.1% a nicotine dependence, 57.5% a mood disorder, and 37.4%, any anxiety disorder. In a proportion of these, the comorbid condition predates the onset of gambling disorders suggesting these might represent a vulnerability factor. These findings suggest important implications for gambling prevention and treatments. Instead of promoting only gambling specific interventions and treatments, the emphasis needs to be on a more holistic approach that includes screening for and treating comorbid …

Complex Effects Of Value-Added Livestock Ventures, Matthew A. Diersen
Complex Effects Of Value-Added Livestock Ventures, Matthew A. Diersen
Economics Commentator (1972- 2016)
Value-added agriculture ventures are generally touted as being positive for a region’s economy. A product formerly shipped elsewhere may now be processed or modified locally or regionally, providing additional employment and related economic activity. Ethanol production, for example, disrupts the pattern of sending corn out of a region, but usually occurs where corn production is already prevalent. Consider, instead, the implications of a new livestock production facility. In this article, observations are made at the state and county levels related to livestock ventures. Kingsbury County is examined for potential effects on the production agriculture (or farming) sector. A livestock venture …

In this tutorial, we show how to create a simple at-home electromyography (EMG) system that will sense muscle activation from the surface of the skin and use it to send a keypress to a computer, bypassing the keyboard. We used a classic MaKey MaKey and a MyoWare sensor to accomplish this, along with a bit of coding. First, we show how to accomplish this using one MyoWare sensor. Then, we show how to add a second sensor to the system. For our purposes we used two sensors, but the methods described in this tutorial can be used to add any …

Desert Or Oasis: Reflecting On Teaching And Tweaking A Discovery Layer, Vera J. Lux, Amy Fyn, Robert J. Snyder
University Libraries Faculty Publications
Implementing and customizing a discovery layer affects not only users but also instruction librarians. To address the teaching implications, librarians from our mid-sized state university engaged in reflective practice to adjust our instruction methods in one-shot sessions. This self-assessment led us to questions about which potential discovery layer customizations would best meet users’ needs. For this reason, we surveyed users regarding their preferences in managing discovery layer results. Presenters will share the benefits received from the reflective practice, provide the results of our librarian and user assessments, and discuss how these informed our teaching and tweaking of the discovery layer.
Financial Outcomes In Seed For Oklahoma Kids, Margaret M. Clancy, Sondra G. Beverly, Michael Sherraden
Financial Outcomes In Seed For Oklahoma Kids, Margaret M. Clancy, Sondra G. Beverly, Michael Sherraden
Center for Social Development Research
The SEED for Oklahoma Kids (SEED OK) experiment is a large-scale policy test of universal, automatic, and progressive Child Development Accounts (CDAs). This fact sheet highlights selected SEED OK financial outcomes measured between 2007 and 2014. Because of SEED OK’s automatic account opening and initial deposits, the CDA has especially large impacts on OK 529 savings among disadvantaged children. Advantaged children are more likely than disadvantaged children to have individual savings in OK 529 accounts, and average individual savings are higher for advantaged children. But, the CDA increases the likelihood that disadvantaged children have OK 529 accounts opened by their …

Get Out Of Fines Free: Recruiting Student Usability Testing Via Fine Waivers, Benjamin Hockenberry, Kourtney Blackburn
Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications
St. John Fisher College's Lavery Library's Access Services and Systems departments began a pilot project in which students with overdue fines tested usability of library Web sites in exchange for fine waivers. Circulation staff promoted the program and redeemed fine waiver vouchers at the Checkout Desk, while Systems staff administered testing and provided vouchers to participants. Staff evaluated the pilot to be a success, as qualitative data were collected to enable iterative changes to library Web sites, and users had a positive customer service experience. The piloted method may be applied in the future to assess other programs and services.

Housing prices in the City of Portland have risen dramatically in recent years, and low income and communities of color have been particularly hard hit in the northeast neighborhoods of the city. Portland Community Reinvestment Initiatives has embarked on the development of 1000 affordable units over the next 10 years to help meet the needs of displaced residents. The Pathway 1000 Community Housing Plan sets out a strategy for providing those 1000 affordable, stable homes.
This project was conducted under the supervision of Marisa Zapata, Ethan Seltzer, Susam Hartnett, and Lisa Bates.

Was December Warm? Family, Politics, And Recollections Of Weather, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Mary D. Lemcke-Stampone
Carsey Publications
In 2015 New Hampshire experienced its warmest December on record. The temperature exceeded twentieth century average temperatures by a wider margin than for any month in historical records dating back to 1895. In February 2016, as part of an ongoing study of environmental perceptions, the Granite State Poll asked state residents whether they thought the recent December had been generally colder, warmer, or about average for that month. Only 63 percent remembered it had been above average. The remainder of the winter set a new warmth record as well, so in April 2016 another Granite State Poll asked residents about …

Associations Between Perceived Teaching Behaviors And Affect In Upper Elementary School Students., Allison D. Barnard, Jill L. Adelson, Patrick Pössel
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
We explored the associations between student-perceived teaching behaviors and negative affect (NA) and positive affect (PA) in upper elementary age students, both before and after controlling for perceived parenting behaviors. The Teaching Behavior Questionnaire (TBQ), the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire (APQ), and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule for Children (PANAS-C) were completed by 777 third to fifth graders in nine elementary schools. Using two-level hierarchical linear model analyses, we found that (a) perceived instructional teaching behavior was negatively associated with NA and positively associated with PA; (b) perceived organizational behavior was not associated with either; (c) perceived socio-emotional teaching behavior …
