Get The Eteam, Stat! Managing Era Troubleshooting Triage Tier By Tier, Jeffrey M. Mortimore
University Libraries: Faculty Presentations
Triage of electronic resource access (ERA) troubleshooting takes planning and rarely is straightforward. Who reported the problem? How visible is it? How long will it take to resolve and who is involved? Without a good triage plan, ERA troubleshooting can spin out of control fast.
This poster session will present a three-part tiering scheme for performing triage on ERA troubleshooting requests reported to the eTeam, the ERA response team at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA. This framework evaluates requests in terms of 1) origin, scope and urgency of request; 2) required stakeholder input to resolve the request; and 3) …

Positive Counseling With College Students, Courtney Butler, Courtney Watford, Shamanda S. Burston, James P. Morgan, David Carscaddon
Journal of Counseling and Psychology
College students face multiple challenges and can find college life to be overwhelming at times. In this paper, we examine how positive psychology, which embraces a strengths-based focus, has much to offer college students and their counselors. After providing an overview of positive psychology, we examine how positive psychology can be integrated into counseling generally and then more specifically into working with college students. We examine a number of different issues that college students face, and we offer different positive psychology techniques that have been found to be beneficial. Moreover, we provide a case study to demonstrate the benefits of …

Web-Scale Discovery: Impact On Library Database Web Page Views And Usage, Zebulin Evelhoch
Library Scholarship
Web page views of databases by title and databases by subject pages, in conjunction with COUNTER Database Report 1 and Journal Report 1 statistics, were examined to determine what impact a migration to Primo, a Web-scale discovery layer, had at Central Washington University Brooks Library. The analysis determined that the first year post-migration (2015) compared to the two years pre-migration (2013–14) saw a decline in Web page views of database Web pages, journal full-text article requests, and database record views and result clicks. The implementation of Primo thus had a noticeable negative impact on both direct database access and overall …

I recently saw a turtle digging a hole to lay eggs in a neighborhood park that I walk through. This park has a lake but what surprised me about the turtle was the location she decided to lay her eggs. Instead of making the nest close to the lake about 50 feet away, where I would assume it would be easier for young turtles to begin their lives, this turtle was digging a hole a few feet from the street at the edge of the park.
Carceral And Intersectional Feminism In Congress, Nancy Whittier
Carceral And Intersectional Feminism In Congress, Nancy Whittier
Sociology: Faculty Publications
This paper uses a materialist feminist discourse analysis to examine how women’s movement organizations, liberal Democrats, and conservative Republican legislators shaped the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and the consequences for intersectional and carceral feminism. Drawing on qualitative analysis of Congressional hearings, published feminist and conservative discussion of VAWA, and accounts of feminist mobilization around VAWA, I first show how a multi-issue coalition led by feminists shaped VAWA. Second, I show how discourses of crime intermixed with feminism into a polysemic gendered crime frame that facilitated cross-ideological support. Third, I show how, in contrast, intersectional issues that activists understood as …

A Power Conflict Approach To Animal Cruelty: Examining How Economic Power Influences The Creation Of Animal Cruelty Laws, Leonard J. Genco
A Power Conflict Approach To Animal Cruelty: Examining How Economic Power Influences The Creation Of Animal Cruelty Laws, Leonard J. Genco
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The current study examines the association of macro-level economic factors and the creation or enactment animal cruelty laws across the states at a fixed time. Criminologists have postulated that economic factors influence the legal system (Chambliss and Seidman, 1971). This thesis addresses whether state-level economic and related macro-level factors influences the amount and types of state animal cruelty legislation lawmakers enact. To do so, this thesis examined animal cruelty legislation and their association with measures of agricultural and farm production, Democratic Party, Republican Party, and pro-animal interest groups across all states of the United States for the time period (2012-2013). …

I first volunteered at a soup kitchen in the frigid depths of winter in very late 1981 or very early 1982, in the heart of the Rust Belt in the midst of a terrible recession. I should emphasize right from the onset that I didn’t want to be there: I was next to useless and very intimidated, forced to be there by the tradition of service at my all-boys Catholic high school. Still, the experience made quite an impression on me, and I tell that story to my students so that they will understand that I know what’s like to …

The Influence Of Floodplain Restoration On Flow And Sediment Dynamics In An Urban River, Sangaralingam Ahilan, Mingfu Guan, Andrew Sleigh, Nigel G. Wright, Heejun Chang
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
A study of floodplain sedimentation on a recently restored floodplain is presented. This study uses a two-dimensional hydro-morphodynamic model for predicting flow and suspended-sediment dynamics in the downstream of Johnson Creek, the East Lents reach, where the bank of the river has been reconfigured to reconnect to a restored floodplain on a 0.26 km2 (26-ha) site. The simulation scenarios include 10-, 50-, 100- and 500-year event-based deposition modelling of flood events and long-term modelling using the 64 historical flood events between 1941 and 2014. Simulation results showed that the restored floodplain significantly attenuates the upstream flood peak by up …

Lifted: A Thematic Analysis Of Homeless Youths’ Reflections On Their Lives Since Beginning A Multi-Faceted, Community-Based Intervention Called Starting Right, Now, Camille Ashley Randle
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although interventions that take an individualized, holistic approach to service delivery have been recommended for homeless youth, few such interventions have been described in the literature. This study sought to examine a unique, multi-faceted, community-based intervention developed in 2009 in Tampa, FL to provide services to homeless adolescents who are no longer living in the custody of a parent or guardian (i.e. unaccompanied youth). The intervention, titled Starting Right, Now (SRN), has served over 100 youth to date. The program provides residential, educational, recreational, and professional development services, as well as mental and physical health care. Each youth also receives …

A Study Of Obligated And Unobligated Time Use Among Unc Students, Schlarbaum Konrad, Kaneesha Davis
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
The purpose of this research was to assess obligated and unobligated time use among University of Northern Colorado (UNC) students within an average twenty-four hour day of the fifteen week semester. A convenience sample of 195 UNC undergraduate students completed a 19-item questionnaire composed of closed ended questions involving time allotments to obligated and unobligated activities. Results indicated that UNC students spend approximately the same amount of time in obligated and unobligated activity. Means testing across the seven time categories revealed no significant differences between male and female students. However, mean testing between upper classmen and lower classmen indicated that …
The Delis-Kaplan Executive Functions System – Tower Test Resilience To Response Bias, Elizabeth Deborah Lowe
The Delis-Kaplan Executive Functions System – Tower Test Resilience To Response Bias, Elizabeth Deborah Lowe
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
Neuropsychological tools are used to gain more accurate insight about an individual’s level of functioning (cognitive, behavioral, executive, etc.), and to make more exact diagnoses; therefore, valid neuropsychological tools are necessary for precise evaluation. Valid neuropsychological assessment relies upon the individual putting forth maximum effort during testing. While the literature is rich when describing methods of detecting incomplete effort, it is sparse when identifying instruments resistant to such response bias. The goal of this study was to determine whether or not effort affects performance on the D-KEFS Tower Test by comparing the results with the Test of Memory Malingering (a …

The Climax Of Long-Run Economic Growth, Paul Kim
Economics Papers and Presentations
Economic Growth is the most popular topic today in economics. Particularly, the most wanted question is; why long run economic growth rare is declining? But at the same time, it is the most confusing subject in economics today and that could be one of the reason why it is most wanted subject' for the following two reasons: (1) the lack of clear identification of meaning of the declining growth rate; (2) the lack of new economic theory to assess a new problem when we say, "declining economic growth rate." In reference to (2), we are facing a new issue and …

Toward Regional Resilience In Toronto: From Diagnosis To Action, Zack Taylor, Leah Birnbaum
Toward Regional Resilience In Toronto: From Diagnosis To Action, Zack Taylor, Leah Birnbaum
Western Urban and Local Governance Working Papers
Greater Toronto is recognized as a high-performing urban region. Over the past decade, however, negative social, economic, and environmental trends have emerged that threaten the region’s future. On the basis of documentary research and four focus group workshops with a diverse array of professional practitioners, this paper assesses the Toronto region’s current assets and vulnerabilities in relation to future risks. The discussion is framed by the concept of resilience—an increasingly popular, yet abstract, concept in urban planning and public administration. This paper proposes, first, that planning and policymaking be directed toward increasing the region’s resilience, understood as the diversity and redundancy …
