Religious Service Attendance And Volunteering: A Growth Curve Analysis, Young-Il Kim, Sung Joon Jang Jun 2016

Religious Service Attendance And Volunteering: A Growth Curve Analysis, Young-Il Kim, Sung Joon Jang

Faculty Publications - Department of Sociology

Despite methodological advances in studying the relationship between religious attendance and volunteering, its dynamic nature still needs to be elucidated. We apply growth curve modeling to examine whether trajectories of religious attendance and volunteering are related to each other over a 15-year period in a nationally representative sample from the Americans’ Changing Lives data (1986-2002). Multivariate results showed that the rates of change in religious attendance and volunteering were positively related, and excluding religious volunteering did not alter the finding. It was also found that the initial level of religious attendance was positively associated with the rate of increase in …

Drop, Cover, And Hold On: Analyzing Fema's Risk Communication Through Visual Rhetoric, Samantha Jo Cosgrove Jun 2016

Drop, Cover, And Hold On: Analyzing Fema's Risk Communication Through Visual Rhetoric, Samantha Jo Cosgrove

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This project seeks to understand the relationship between visual rhetoric and power structure between FEMA’s Earthquake publications and their audience. Research shows images leave a longer impression on readers than text, causing more studies to focus on visuals rather than just text in technical communication. Author uses Critical Discourse Analysis to analyze the images in relation to text, design, and intended audience to determine what information is being privileged. It is determined that homeowners are being privileged with information over non-homeowners, established through a collection of images and image types. The lack of information for non-homeowners could result in injury …

A Closer Look Into Remote Work: Examining Resources Within Remote Work Arrangements With Outcomes Of Job Performance And Work-Family Conflict, Kaitlin Kiburz Kiburz Jun 2016

A Closer Look Into Remote Work: Examining Resources Within Remote Work Arrangements With Outcomes Of Job Performance And Work-Family Conflict, Kaitlin Kiburz Kiburz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Remote work has become a popular topic within organizations and the popular press. However, academic research has been inconclusive as to whether remote work is related to benefits of increased job performance and lessened work-family conflict. This study examined remote work resources to gain an in-depth understanding of how remote work relates to job performance and work-family conflict. One hundred fifty-one salespeople participated in two time-lagged surveys regarding remote work resources (autonomy, feedback, access to information and interaction with one’s supervisor), outcomes (subjective and objective job performance and work family-conflict) and demographics. Remote work resources were not significantly related to …

Jazzing Up Next-Gen Librarians For Freshman Engineering Instruction Delivery, Marian G. Armour-Gemmen, Chanelle Pickens, Robin A.M. Hensel, Mary L. Strife, Mariam Jalalifard

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Because of the need for science and engineering librarians, both nationwide and at West Virginia University (WVU), a model of Introduction to STEM Disciplines’ Information Use and Mentoring

occurred at WVU. The engineering librarians introduced new resident librarians and a graduate research assistant to the Freshman Engineering program and involved them in teaching several engineering information literacy sessions. The goal of engaging the new librarians into the educational activities was to motivate their learning, gain feedback on current teaching strategies and fresh ideas for possible future implementation, and facilitate buy-in of the need for and role of STEM-specific librarians. The …

Coveney Must Grasp The Nettle Of A Flawed Housing Report, Lorcan Sirr Jun 2016

Coveney Must Grasp The Nettle Of A Flawed Housing Report, Lorcan Sirr

Media

On June 17, the Oireachtas committee on housing and homelessness published its report after convening in April. It interviewed 38 witnesses and received about 82 submissions from the public and various bodies. These reports do not write themselves, so the committee must be commended for its efforts. Indeed, as I suspect many of its members did not appreciate the infinite complexities of housing, apart from the normal personal experiences, what they have read and constituents’ queries. They did well to get their heads around some of the main issues involved. The final report has some good recommendations but it misses …

Social Media For Librarians And Users, A Global Perspective, Sai Deng, Ying Zhang, Jing Xu

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Social media has increasingly become an integral part of our personal and professional lives worldwide, and it revolutionizes how we communicate and share information. Libraries and librarians are early adopters and proponents for the use of social media. In countries such as China, social media has gained momentum in the recent years, and particularly in colleges and libraries.

This poster first investigates social media's presences and applications especially in university libraries in the U.S. and in China. The two countries use different social media apps such as WeChat, Facebook, Twitter, Weibo and Blog. It then focuses on a case study …

A History And Analysis Of Cala's Social Media, Sai Deng, Xiao Hu Jun 2016

A History And Analysis Of Cala's Social Media, Sai Deng, Xiao Hu

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Under the rapid development of social media and social networking sites, a number of social media channels have been deeply integrated into people's professional and private lives. The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA), started its social media presence in 2012 with Facebook, and then expanded to YouTube and WeChat. While CALA's Facebook and YouTube channel are more public and social platforms for its news, announcements and documents, its WeChat group is more of an informal space for sharing news and embarking discussions. This poster will look into the various aspects of these social media channels and provide statistical and textual …

Library I.T.: Information Technologists Or Information Thought-Leaders?, Craig A. Boman, Whitni Watkins

Roesch Library Staff Presentations

Library staff employed in information technology departments are often seen as support staff, only providing services when something breaks. But what more can library IT staff do to support the mission of their libraries? In this presentation we will explore why library IT staff should maximize their ability to work across various library departments to collaboratively design new library services rather than being relegated to support staff. We will also explore how library IT staff may challenge traditional bureaucratic organization structures to lead change efforts.

A Virtuous Circle Of Student Engagement: The Tech Corner, Brian R. Schuck, Susan B. Wainscott

Library Faculty Presentations

How can a culture of student innovation and interdisciplinary creativity be fostered when library facilities and / or budget do not accommodate a maker space? We allowed students to help develop a new collection of devices and equipment, the Tech Corner, launched in early 2016. We seek to provide ready access to unique, easy-to-use devices that support creativity, curricular work and recreation but may be too expensive for our average student to purchase. Student focus groups helped design the branding, marketing, and a starter collection of items that include virtual reality headsets, digital art brushes, tablet-compatible MIDI keyboards, digital microscopes, …

Where Is The Survivor’S Voice? An Examination Of The Individual And Structural Challenges To The Reintegration Of Immigrant Human Trafficking Survivors, Michelle Cristina Angelo Dantas Rocha Jun 2016

Where Is The Survivor’S Voice? An Examination Of The Individual And Structural Challenges To The Reintegration Of Immigrant Human Trafficking Survivors, Michelle Cristina Angelo Dantas Rocha

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The United States is one of the top destination countries for human trafficking, and Florida has the third highest number of reported cases of human trafficking. Despite the severity of this issue, Florida anti-trafficking legislation, reintegration programs, and awareness campaigns tend to contribute to the invisibility of the victims and undermine their recovery and reintegration into society, especially when the victims are immigrants. This project uses a multi-method approach including content analysis of anti-human trafficking campaigns to argue that portrayals of a “perfect victim” only amplify stigmatization and discrimination against immigrant victims. Through in-depth interviews and ethnographic observation highlighting the …

Collaborating Across Departments For Image Metadata, Courtenay Mcleland

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

The Digital Projects & Preservation Department and the Discovery Enhancement Department, each within the Technical Services Division of the Thomas G. Carpenter Library, have collaborated to ensure that metadata is embedded in image-based collections in the institutional repository. Our initial project is nearly complete and now we have begun a second. The first project utilized freeware so that staff members in Discovery Enhancement, who did not have access to the Adobe Suite, could embed metadata and geographic coordinates. Now that a campus-wide agreement has provided access to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, members of the team can apply metadata using presets and …

Shut Up And Listen: How One Academic Library Used Social Listening To Connect With Students And Build A Community, Maria Atilano Jun 2016

Shut Up And Listen: How One Academic Library Used Social Listening To Connect With Students And Build A Community, Maria Atilano

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

Marketing consultant and social media expert Chris Brogan once wrote: "[Social listening] is the closest thing to printing money that I can tell you about." While social media and networking tools such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are often used by organizations to communicate information to their constituents, the real return on investment comes from listening. Over the past two years, the University of North Florida's Thomas G. Carpenter Library has used its social media presence (@unflibrary) to listen and then engage with students. This practice has led the Carpenter Library to build a reliable, friendly, and helpful online community …

The Effects Of Visual Arts On Expressive Language In Participants With Dementia, Shannon Valentine Daly Jun 2016

The Effects Of Visual Arts On Expressive Language In Participants With Dementia, Shannon Valentine Daly

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Visual aids such as memory books have been shown to help increase recall of information and facilitate improved communication in people with dementia (Bourgeois, 2014). Because of the effectiveness of visual aids for people with dementia, this study aimed to determine if the type of visual stimulus would produce differences in the quality of language expressed. It was hypothesized that a more realistic picture in full color would elicit more descriptive language than a black and white line drawing. Verbal descriptions of Norman Rockwell’s realistic painting, Coming and Going and descriptions of a black and white line drawing of the …

A Cross-Methodological Investigation Of Emotional Reactivity In Major Depression, Vanessa Panaite Jun 2016

A Cross-Methodological Investigation Of Emotional Reactivity In Major Depression, Vanessa Panaite

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is primarily characterized by prevalent sadness and anhedonia. Laboratory studies find that depression is characterized by reduced reactivity across emotional contexts, while a few studies using naturalistic designs find that depressed people show normative reactivity to negative life events and mood brightening in response to positive events. The current study was an investigation of emotional reactivity in depression through the use of experimental and naturalistic designs. This allowed for an investigation of sources of lab-life discrepancies in emotional functioning in depression, including negative affect (NA) regulation. We examined experiential reactivity across contexts and types of stimuli …
