In order to develop strong campus connections and to expand the reach of library services, it’s important for librarians to engage with faculty and students beyond the library and classroom environments. Some ways in which librarians may do this are through attending campus events, conducting outreach activities in areas such as student resident halls, and by simply visiting campus coffee shops and cafeterias.
Factors That Affect Fast Food Consumption: A Review Of The Literature, Yuchu Song
Factors That Affect Fast Food Consumption: A Review Of The Literature, Yuchu Song
MBA Student Scholarship
American rates of overweight and obesity are high, and the prevalence of obesity has continued to rise over the past few decades. Excessive consumption of fast food has been one of the multiple contributing factors driving the overweight and obese epidemic. This literature review summarizes the disadvantages of fast food on people's health, reveals common people's average fast food consumption. Based on this background, the paper is to explore factors why some people choose not to consume fast food, as well as factors why some people choose to consume fast food, and to summarize some recommendations that can help reduce …

Review Of Becoming An Embedded Librarian: Making Connections In The Classroom, Kelli Johnson Edd
Librarian Research
Excerpt:
Though the concept of the embedded librarian is not a new one, it still can draw looks of bewilderment or disbelief in faculty and librarians alike. Librarians may ask: Should I embed in a class? How do I go about it? How can I convince faculty to buy into the concept? Many faculty members have never heard the phrase at all. However, if you are looking to clear the fog around this interesting and important concept in library services, Michelle Reale’s book is a coherent and well-organized discussion of the various aspects of embedded librarianship reinforced with details of …

The Integrity Of Financial Analysts: Evidence From Asymmetric Responses To Earnings Surprises, Rui Lu, Wenxuan Hou, Henry Oppenheimer, Ting Zhang
The Integrity Of Financial Analysts: Evidence From Asymmetric Responses To Earnings Surprises, Rui Lu, Wenxuan Hou, Henry Oppenheimer, Ting Zhang
Economics and Finance Faculty Publications
This paper investigates the integrity of financial analysts by examining their recommendation responses to large quarterly earnings surprises. Although there is no significant difference in recommendation changes between affiliated and unaffiliated analysts in response to positive earnings surprises, affiliated analysts are more reluctant than unaffiliated analysts to downgrade stock recommendations in response to negative earnings surprises. The evidence implies that conflicts of interest undermine the integrity of financial analysts. We further examine the effects of reputation concern and the Global Research Analyst Settlement as informal and formal mechanisms, on restoring analysts’ integrity. The results show that the positive bias in …

Darkness In The Contemporary Scientific Imagination And Its Implications, Joe Cambray
Darkness In The Contemporary Scientific Imagination And Its Implications, Joe Cambray
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
In recent years there has been a growing interest and reporting in the popular press and scientific literature on the topics of dark energy and dark matter. The mysterious, unknown nature of these entities has captured the cultural imagination. However, very little psychological reflection has been offered on the attention given to these phenomena. A brief overview of the human fascination with (and fear of) the dark is presented as a backdrop to the current interest being given to realms of darkness in modern cosmology. Beginning with the hypothesis of dark matter in the 1930s based on astronomical observations …
Meaningful Mutations: Reflections On The Synchronicity Of Evolution, Ritske Rensma
Meaningful Mutations: Reflections On The Synchronicity Of Evolution, Ritske Rensma
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Although Jung made a connection between his concept of the archetype and mankind’s evolutionary history throughout his career, he remained notoriously tight-lipped about his own specific views on evolutionary theory. In the final years of his life, however, he finally went more into detail about this important topic, putting forward a most thought-provoking idea: the notion that synchronicity, or meaningful coincidences, had a role to play in the way evolution took shape. As I will argue in this paper, Jung’s comments on this topic present clear evidence that he did not think primarily along Darwinian lines, as has recently …

Interest in the food we eat and how it is produced, distributed, and consumed has grown tremendously in the last few years. Consumers are exchanging highly processed, genetically engineered, chemical-laden, and pesticide-contaminated food often associated with big agribusinesses for fresh produce grown using organic methods. The growth of farmers markets from 1,755 in 1994 to more than 8,200 in 2014, in both urban and rural areas, is just one indication that consumers are interested in knowing who produced their food and how the food was produced.
This book addresses the importance of creating food systems that are sustainable by bringing …

“Great Job Cleaning Your Plate Today!” Determinants Of Child-Care Providers’ Use Of Controlling Feeding Practices: An Exploratory Examination, Dipti A. Dev, Brent A. Mcbride, Katherine E. Speirs, Kimberly A. Blitch, Natalie A. Williams
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Background National early childhood obesity prevention policies recommend that child-care providers avoid controlling feeding practices (CFP) (e.g., pressure-to-eat, food as reward, and praising children for cleaning their plates) with children to prevent unhealthy child eating behaviors and childhood obesity. However, evidence suggests that providers frequently use CFP during mealtimes.
Objective Using the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (2011) benchmarks for nutrition in child care as a framework, researchers assessed child-care providers’ perspectives regarding their use of mealtime CFP with young children (aged 2 to 5 years).
Design Using a qualitative design, individual, face-to-face, semi-structured interviews were conducted with providers until …

Linking Social Capital, Cultural Capital And Heterotopia At The Folk Festival, Linda Wilks, Bernadette Quinn
Linking Social Capital, Cultural Capital And Heterotopia At The Folk Festival, Linda Wilks, Bernadette Quinn
Articles
This paper investigates the role of folk festivals in transforming interconnections between people, space and culture. It interlinks three sets of theoretical ideas: social capital, cultural capital and heterotopia to suggest a new conceptual framework that will help to frame a deeper understanding of the nature of celebration. Qualitative data were collected at two long-established folk festivals, Sidmouth Folk Festival in southern England and the Feakle Traditional Music Festival in western Ireland, in order to investigate these potential links. Although Foucault did not fully develop the concept of heterotopia, his explanation that heterotopias are counter-sites, which, unlike utopias, are located …

Taylor's Soft Perennialism: A Primer Of Perennial Flaws In Transpersonal Scholarship, Glenn Hartelius, Glenn Hartelius
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This response to Taylor's essay in this issue concludes that his notion of soft perennialism is unworkable and shows no promise as a theory to explain spiritual diversity. Numerous specific shortcomings of the paper are described, then it is used as basis for identifying three broad categories of error that occur in some transpersonal scholarship. Examples from Taylor's paper are supplemented with similar errors in papers by other transpersonal scholars.
Dreaming In Two Worlds And Two Languages: Bilingual Dreams And Acculturation Challenges, Winifred K. Lum, Jenny Wade
Dreaming In Two Worlds And Two Languages: Bilingual Dreams And Acculturation Challenges, Winifred K. Lum, Jenny Wade
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This study investigated the significance of first and second languages in the bilingual dreams of immigrant participants. A purposive sample of nine women and six men aged 20 to 71 whose first languages were Spanish, Thai, Italian, Tagalog, and French, and later acquired English, participated in semi-structured, open-ended interviews recalling a dream featuring both languages. Transcripts were thematically analyzed individually and across cases. The most important theme was the ambicultural self in the dream, referring to a culturally flexible dream figure able to speak the dreamer’s first and second languages to bridge between the protagonist’s two cultures to accomplish the …

The Role Of Public Relations In Social Capital, Weiwu Zhang, Alan Abitbol
The Role Of Public Relations In Social Capital, Weiwu Zhang, Alan Abitbol
Communication Faculty Publications
Public relations research has traditionally focused on how public relations efforts make organizations more effective. Recently, scholars have argued for the broader role of public relations in society. That is, how can public relations be used to improve society rather than simply making organizations more effective? Existing studies have emphasized the relationship between internal public relations and organizational social capital. Lack of scholarly attention has been paid to how public relations efforts affect citizens’ social capital in general. To fill the gap in this area, this study examines how different types of public relations efforts contribute to citizens’ social capital. …

Factors Predicting Weight Loss And Weight Gain In Bariatric Surgery Patients, Deborah Potisek Simpson
Factors Predicting Weight Loss And Weight Gain In Bariatric Surgery Patients, Deborah Potisek Simpson
Doctoral Dissertations
Obesity has become an epidemic in the United States that can result in problems in multiple areas of an individual's life. Bariatric surgery has been shown to be an effective weight loss treatment for obese and morbidly obese individuals; however, although many individuals obtain long-term weight loss success after surgery, there is a percentage of patients who do not obtain the expected weight loss or end up regaining the weight they had initially lost. In an attempt to identify those who may be at risk for poorer results after bariatric surgery, most surgeons require that an individual undergo a psychological …

From Philosophy To Phenomenology: The Argument For A “Soft” Perennialism, Steve Taylor
From Philosophy To Phenomenology: The Argument For A “Soft” Perennialism, Steve Taylor
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This paper argues for a soft perennialism, distinct from the hard perennialism which suggests that spiritual and religious traditions are expressions of the same underlying spiritual realities. There are two reasons why it is necessary to think in terms of a soft perennial model: firstly, because of a number of important common themes or trends across spiritual traditions; and secondly (and most importantly) because when the process of expansion of being or awakening occurs outside the context of spiritual traditions, broadly the same themes and tendencies appear, suggesting that there is a common landscape of experience which precedes interpretation and …
