A Model For Attention-Driven Judgements In Type Theory With Records, Simon Dobnik, John D. Kelleher Jul 2016

A Model For Attention-Driven Judgements In Type Theory With Records, Simon Dobnik, John D. Kelleher

Conference papers

This paper makes three contributions to the discussion on the applicability of Type Theory with Records (TTR) to embodied dialogue agents. First, it highlights the problem of type assignment or judgements in practical implementations which is resource intensive. Second, it presents a judgement control mechanism, which consists of grouping of types into clusters or states by their thematic relations and selection of types following two mechanisms inspired by the Load Theory of selective attention and cognitive control (Lavie et al., 2004), that addresses this problem. Third, it presents a computational framework, based on Bayesian inference, that offers a basis for …

The Use Of Aerial Rgb Imagery And Lidar In Comparing Ecological Habitats And Geomorphic Features On A Natural Versus Man-Made Barrier Island, Carlton P. Anderson, Gregory A. Carter, William R. Funderburk

Faculty Publications

The Mississippi (MS) barrier island chain along the northern Gulf of Mexico coastline is subject to rapid changes in habitat, geomorphology and elevation by natural and anthropogenic disturbances. The purpose of this study was to compare habitat type coverage with respective elevation, geomorphic features and short-term change between the naturally-formed East Ship Island and the man-made Sand Island. Ground surveys, multi-year remotely-sensed data, habitat classifications and digital elevation models were used to quantify short-term habitat and geomorphic change, as well as to examine the relationships between habitat types and micro-elevation. Habitat types and species composition were the same on both …

Logistical Lessons Learned In Designing And Executing A Photo-Elicitation Study In The Veterans Health Administration, Michael A. Mitchell, Daniel O. Hedayati, Keri L. Rodriguez, Adam J. Gordon, Lauren M. Broyles, Gala True, Salva N. Balbale, James W. Conley Jul 2016

Logistical Lessons Learned In Designing And Executing A Photo-Elicitation Study In The Veterans Health Administration, Michael A. Mitchell, Daniel O. Hedayati, Keri L. Rodriguez, Adam J. Gordon, Lauren M. Broyles, Gala True, Salva N. Balbale, James W. Conley

The Qualitative Report

Participatory photography research methods have been used to successfully engage and collect in-depth information from individuals whose voices have been traditionally marginalized in clinical or research arenas. However, participatory photography methods can introduce unique challenges and considerations regarding study design, human subject protections, and other regulatory barriers, particularly with vulnerable patient populations and in highly regulated institutions. Practical guidance on navigating these complex, interrelated methodological, logistical, and ethical issues is limited. Using a case exemplar, we describe our experiences with the planning, refinement, and initiation of a research study that used photo-elicitation interviews to assess the healthcare experiences of homeless …

Teaching: Natural Or Cultural?, David F. Lancy Jul 2016

Teaching: Natural Or Cultural?, David F. Lancy

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

In this chapter I argue that teaching, as we now understand the term, is historically and cross-culturally very rare. It appears to be unnecessary to transmit culture or to socialize children. Children are, on the other hand, primed by evolution to be avid observers, imitators, players and helpers—roles that reveal the profoundly autonomous and self-directed nature of culture acquisition (Lancy in press a). And yet, teaching is ubiquitous throughout the modern world—at least among the middle to upper class segment of the population. This ubiquity has led numerous scholars to argue for the universality and uniqueness of teaching as a …

Science, Scientists, And Local Weather: Understanding Mass Perceptions Of Global Warming, Wanyun Shao, James C. Garand, Barry D. Keim, Lawrence C. Hamilton

Sociology

Objective: To explore the effects of long-term climate trends and short-term weather fluctuations, evaluations of scientists and science, political predispositions, religious affiliation, the information environment, and demographic attributes on individuals’ views about whether global warming exists and, if so, whether it is a result of natural cycles or human activity.

Methods: We use data from the 2009 Pew General Public Science Survey, along with data on long- and short-term patterns of temperature and precipitation in individuals’ home communities.

Results: We find that long-term trends in summer temperatures influence perceptions of global warming. Individuals who reside in communities with long-term warming …

Protocol For The Seed-Trial: Supported Employment And Preventing Early Disability, Vigdis Sveinsdottir, Torill Tveito, Gary R. Bond, Astrid L. Grasdal, Stein A. Lie, Silje E. Reme

Dartmouth Scholarship

Early withdrawal or exclusion from the labor market leads to significant personal and societal costs. In Norway, the increasing numbers of young adults receiving disability pension is a growing problem. While a large body of research demonstrates positive effects of Supported Employment (SE) in patients with severe mental illness, no studies have yet investigated the effectiveness of SE in young adults with a range of social and health conditions who are receiving benefits.

Political Science Faculty Publications

This article examines public opinion as it relates to the primary tenets of the pragmatic philosophy. Anti-foundationalism, fallibilism, and an emphasis on practical consequences are observed in American public opinion. In addition, there is strong support for pragmatic politics in America. The evidence suggests that pragmatism is a common cultural attribute in American society.

Access And Barriers To Services For Dependent And Non-Dependent Commercially Sexually Exploited Children In Florida, Brianna O'Steen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

“Human trafficking” has become part of the everyday lexicon in the United States and globally over the last fifteen years. The issue has made its way into political platforms, scholarly work, church congregations, and international aid agendas. Florida is currently recognized as third in the nation for number of cases of human trafficking. This thesis employs ethnographic interviews and observations to understand one portion of Florida’s human trafficking problem referred to as domestic minor sex trafficking. This type of trafficking affects mostly teenage girls from marginalized populations, such as those that have experienced the child welfare system, homelessness, and impoverished …

An Information And Communication Technologies For Development (Ict4d) Decision Framework For Building An Information Economy In Developing Countries: The Case Of Palestine, Hasan Nuseibeh Jul 2016

An Information And Communication Technologies For Development (Ict4d) Decision Framework For Building An Information Economy In Developing Countries: The Case Of Palestine, Hasan Nuseibeh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Building a thriving information economy is a goal for many developing countries. This research helps identify the factors (inhibitors and motivators) that can be used to leverage the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector in a developing country to build a sustainable information economy that benefits other sectors of the economy. This is done by studying the current literature on this topic and then synthesizing the theoretical models to create a unified decision framework to help developing countries set their path to building a sustainable information economy.

Drawing on past literature and extant theory, a novel ICT4D decision framework is …

An Event Study Of Patent Verdicts And Judicial Leakage, Bryan Engelhardt, Zachary Fernandes Jul 2016

An Event Study Of Patent Verdicts And Judicial Leakage, Bryan Engelhardt, Zachary Fernandes

Economics Department Working Papers

To check for the impartiality of the United States judicial system, we investigate whether judicial decisions are leaked prior to their public release. Utilizing an event study methodology, we test for leaked information by analyzing the effect of patent infringement verdicts on the stock prices of the firms involved before and after the public release of the verdict. We find evidence that at least some of the decisions are leaked prior to their public release.

Educating The Under Empowered For Tolerance Of Satire And Participation In Young Democracies, Judith Puncochar, Don Faust Jul 2016

Educating The Under Empowered For Tolerance Of Satire And Participation In Young Democracies, Judith Puncochar, Don Faust

Conference Presentations

Drawing from experiences in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the United States, a relationship appears to exist between tolerance for satire, freedom of expression, and academic freedom in higher education. Empowering the under empowered for participation in vibrant democracies and rational public discourse seems to coincide with an increasing tolerance for satire. We posit vibrant democracies must contain educational elements essential to empower the under empowered for democratic participation, in particular, to provide new democratic citizens with an understanding of the role of satire to cultivate rational public discourse in new democracies. New Southeast Asian democracies need growing evidence of dynamic strivings …

1901 - Report Of Irrigation Investigations In California

Miscellaneous Documents and Reports

The 1901 Report of the Irrigation Investigations in California under the auspices of Elwood Mead, Expert in Charge was premised on the growing value and increasing scarcity of water creating, in turn, the need for better laws to control the distribution of streams in California. In order to promote the more rapid and successful development of the State's resources, the general conclusions of those taking part in the investigations indicated the need for and nature of the reforms required to put agriculture under irrigation on a ore enduring and satisfactory basis.

Perilous Decisions Humanitarian Security And Risk Management In A Complex World, Amanda Guidero Jul 2016

Perilous Decisions Humanitarian Security And Risk Management In A Complex World, Amanda Guidero

Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations

For the past 20 years, attacks against humanitarian staff have drawn increasing attention in the media and among academics and practitioners. Recently, high profile attacks against organizations such as Médecins Sans Frontières in Syria and Afghanistan have underscored the insecurity confronting humanitarian organizations. While most attention has focused on how external actors have increasingly targeted humanitarian organizations, few studies have examined the security decision-making processes within organizations. This research addresses the gap in the literature on humanitarian security decision-making by focusing on the internal dynamics that influence security related decisions. The research develops and applies the Organizational Security Risk Management …

Disentangling The Effects Of Violent Subculture And Structure: A Multi-Level Analysis Of Race-Specific Gun Violence In Urban U.S. Counties, Rick Dierenfeldt Jul 2016

Disentangling The Effects Of Violent Subculture And Structure: A Multi-Level Analysis Of Race-Specific Gun Violence In Urban U.S. Counties, Rick Dierenfeldt

Theses and Dissertations

A large number of studies have examined the contextual level influence of firearm availability on firearm-related violence, yet extant literature has failed to simultaneously consider the effects of structure, culture, and firearm availability on the likelihood of firearm violence. The current study adds to the literature by engaging the use of race- and offense-specific non-linear multi-level analyses to examine the relative influence of structure, violent subculture, firearm availability, and incident characteristics on the likelihood of firearm use during aggravated assaults and robberies. Drawing upon data contained in the National Incident Based Reporting System, American Community Survey, and Wide-Ranging Online Data …

An Application Of General Strain Theory To Recidivism In Arkansas: A Multilevel Study, Brittani Mcneal Jul 2016

An Application Of General Strain Theory To Recidivism In Arkansas: A Multilevel Study, Brittani Mcneal

Theses and Dissertations

Prior research has focused on individual- and community-level factors in examining recidivism. Additionally, recidivism research has not applied criminological theory to explain recidivism, however, community-level measures have been constructed from social disorganization theory on recidivism. With a spotlight on individual characteristics and the community, potential factors from the institutional environment are limited in research, in addition to, the application of theory. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the effects strain on recidivism and time to recidivism across prison in Arkansas by applying general strain theory. Specifically, the current study used male offenders released in 2011 who were housed …

Strip Clubs, “Secondary Effects,” And Residential Property Prices, Taggert J. Brooks, Brad R. Humphreys, Adam Nowak Jul 2016

Strip Clubs, “Secondary Effects,” And Residential Property Prices, Taggert J. Brooks, Brad R. Humphreys, Adam Nowak

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

The "secondary effects" legal doctrine allows municipalities to zone, or otherwise regulate, sexually oriented businesses. Negative "secondary effects" (economic externalities) justify limiting First Amendment protection of speech conducted inside strip clubs. One example of a secondary effect, cited in no fewer than four United States Supreme Court rulings, is the negative effect of strip clubs on the quality of the surrounding neighborhood. Little empirical evidence that strip clubs do, in fact, have a negative effect on the surrounding neighborhood exists. To the extent that changes in neighborhood quality are reflected by changes in property prices, property prices should decrease when …
