Using Interlibrary Loan To Strengthen Regional Library Collections, Kate Ross, Kourtney Blackburn, Michael Mulligan
Using Interlibrary Loan To Strengthen Regional Library Collections, Kate Ross, Kourtney Blackburn, Michael Mulligan
Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications
Academic libraries in New York State have benefited from Coordinated Collection Development Aid (CCDA), meant to support resource sharing, since 1981. In recent years, dwindling academic library budgets have increased the need to utilize funds effectively and reduce unnecessary duplication across physical library collections. Patrons already benefit from the connection between resource sharing and collection development, where ILL is important and shared collections are valued. A need existed to connect the dots between library collection development and resource sharing cooperatives, where the strength of resource sharing groups is the strength of the combined, diversified collections of its members. The presentation …

On Sport and Society
It’s beginning to appear that the Russians will be the big winners at the Olympic Games opening next week in Rio. You may wonder how this could be given the fact that large numbers of Russian athletes, including all the track and field team, have been banned from participation in the Games of 2016. That of course is precisely the point.
Sensation Seeking And Conscientiousness In Relation To Caffeine Consumption And Expectancy, Cheyenne Bullock
Sensation Seeking And Conscientiousness In Relation To Caffeine Consumption And Expectancy, Cheyenne Bullock
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Habitual caffeine consumers often report difficulty reducing caffeine use with many continuing to use caffeine despite experiencing symptoms suggestive of substance dependence. Given the evidence of a positive association between sensation seeking and substance use as well as initial reports of a negative relationship between elevated conscientiousness and substance use, this study proposed to evaluate the relationship of both factors on caffeine consumption and expectancy. Two hundred sixty-five students in an introductory psychology course completed a series of brief surveys assessing caffeine consumption, caffeine expectancies, sensation seeking, and conscientiousness. A statistically significant positive correlation was hypothesized for sensation seeking and …

Closing The Gap Or Reaching The Ceiling: An Exploratory Trend Analysis Of The Black White Achievement Gap In Texas, Jemimah Lea Young, Jamaal R. Young
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
The academic achievement gap is an intriguing issue in educational research across the nation, as well as one of the most serious problems facing the United States. Texas has shown tremendous success in narrowing the difference between the percentage of White students and students of color that pass the TAAS and TAKS over two consecutive decades. This study investigated identified evidence a “ceiling effect” may mediate the results of two decades of assessments in the state of Texas. The results suggest that the growth patterns for African American students pass rates were consistently larger than White student growth trajectories, but …

Juvenile Transfer To Adult Court: Ongoing Search For Scientific Support, David Myers
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
(From p. 3) The basic question addressed in this body of research is as follows: Does transferring juvenile offenders to the adult criminal justice system produce a specific deterrent, criminogenic, or null effect? Unfortunately, despite two decades of research and the meta-analytic techniques employed in this study, a definitive answer to this question remains unclear. Nevertheless, when the results of this meta-analysis are considered along with findings from other relevant research conducted during the past 20 years, it seems clear that the practice of treating juveniles as adults should be limited to the most serious, violent, and chronic offenders, who …

Misalignment Of Career And Educational Aspirations In Middle School: Differences Across Race, Ethnicity, And Socioeconomic Status, Brea L. Perry, Elizabeth Martinez, Edward W. Morris, Tanja C. Link, Carl G. Leukefeld
Sociology Faculty Publications
Misalignment of educational and career goals (i.e., educational aspirations expressed are inadequate for attaining one’s desired occupation) is associated with lower educational attainment and a lack of college readiness, and may contribute to persistent educational and employment disparities. Drawing on data from 249 sixth graders in low-income schools, this research examines misalignment between educational and career aspirations across racial and ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Findings indicate that students in low-income schools aspire to middle and upper middle class careers, but sometimes lack an understanding of the educational degrees required to achieve their goals. Latinos are significantly more likely than other …

Objectives—Despite well-known fitness advantages to males who produce and maintain high endogenous testosterone levels, such phenotypes may be costly if testosterone-mediated investment in reproductive effort trade-off against investment in somatic maintenance. Previous studies of androgen-mediated trade-offs in human immune function find mixed results, in part because most studies either focus on a few indicators of immunity, are confounded by phenotypic correlation, or are observational. Here the association between male endogenous testosterone and 13 circulating cytokines are examined before and after ex vivo antigen stimulation with phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) and lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in a high pathogen population of Bolivian forager-horticulturalists.

Rural Futures Institute: Publications
Place-based learning is powerful. It can be implemented in rural, suburban and urban school districts as well as universities. Contextualizing learning with the students lived experiences will increase student achievement and in the words of Rachel Carson, create “a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life (2011).”

Navigating The Institutional Review Board For Librarianship Research, Carolyn Schubert
Libraries
Librarians are encountering more opportunities to conduct original research and contribute to evidence based practices, but only 26% believe they have the educational training to conduct these tasks (Kennedy & Brancolini, 2012). One key step in this process is navigating an Institutional Review Board (IRB) to assure participants are treated in an ethical manner. What does it mean to protect research participants today? What does an IRB look for? What tips, tricks, and best practices can save you time with this process? Discussion of these questions and more are the focus of this webinar.

Pictorial Race Activiation In Priming Measures, Elena V. Stepanova, Michael J. Strube, Laura E. Clote, Daniel Limes
Faculty Publications
This review explores characteristics of facial primes employed in priming studies of racial prejudice and stereotyping. It addresses the role of perceptual, cue-based processing of visual stimuli characteristics in altering racial typicality, and the effects of different moderators. The authors document the nature of variability in primes and moderators used in priming studies (N = 96) up to 2009. Methodological and conceptual implications are discussed, along with gaps in the field. Better control over facial primes employed, more accuracy in reporting and open access to procedural information are suggested in an effort to improve the state of racial priming …
