Strategic Housing And Vacant Land Development Plan For A More Viable Detroit, Ryan W. Hebert
Strategic Housing And Vacant Land Development Plan For A More Viable Detroit, Ryan W. Hebert
Student Research – Stevenson Center
In recent years Detroit has seen the beginnings of a revival with coordinated blight removal efforts from the city and large downtown development investments from foundations, such as the Kresge Foundation, and key players in the corporate sector such as Dan Gilbert, founder and chairman of Quicken Loans. While these efforts have led to tremendous changes and revitalization in the downtown and midtown areas, as well as along the riverfront, much of the city’s neighborhoods remain left to solve their housing and land use crises. What follows is an attempt to build upon the work of others in finding creative …

Ways That Information Can Be Good, Mark Lenker
Ways That Information Can Be Good, Mark Lenker
Library Faculty Presentations
Evaluating information is fundamentally a matter of judging an information source according to its value. Current practice in library instruction is somewhat limited insofar as it equates the value of information with credibility or usefulness in a persuasive argument. Philosopher Richard Kraut proposes a theory of value that links a thing's goodness to its capacity to promote well-being. Applying this idea to information, I argue that information is most valuable when it disrupts our current ways of thinking and feeling and leads us to consider new possibilities. We need to incorporate this aspect of value into our current strategies for …

Beyond The Coding Process: A Review Of Margrit Schreier’S Qualitative Content Analysis In Practice, Shahlaine Dhillon
The Qualitative Report
Schreier’s work, “Qualitative Content Analysis in Practice,” is a well laid out book for novices that begins in assuming the reader has little to no prior knowledge in the area of content analysis. Schreier introduces the historical, theoretical, and conceptual frames, which lead to the development of content analysis to include analysis beyond just coding. Using within-chapter summaries, key points, and end-of-chapter questions, this book offers opportunities for reflection to ensure the reader has a full understanding of the information presented. Recommended use of this text is as a supplemental text to more seminal works on content analysis or as …

Are Insects Sentient?, Michael Tye
Are Insects Sentient?, Michael Tye
Animal Sentience
I comment on the methodology used by Klein & Barron for dealing with the question of insect sentience and I briefly make a proposal of my own. Once it is granted that insects are sentient, a further question arises: which insects are subject to which states of sentience? Do insects feel pain, for example? If so, which ones? On the further question, I note, Klein & Barron have nothing to say.
Animal Grieving And Human Mourning, Matteo Colombo
Animal Grieving And Human Mourning, Matteo Colombo
Animal Sentience
King’s How animals grieve beautifully describes several ways in which animals and humans show a similar capacity for grief. Yet this book does not sufficiently emphasise the language-empowered capacity to objectify thinking and sentiments about death, which makes human mourning unique. Here I put this capacity into focus and relate it to the social-normative aspect of human mourning that seems to be missing in other animals.

This poster presentation demonstrates the workflow processes of a cataloging project for motion picture publicity materials at the BYU Library. In June 2015, the Library established a new policy on cataloging published materials in archival collections to provide better discovery for researchers. The first focus area for implementing this policy was a large collection of movie posters and other published items within our Arts and Communications collections. Under the policy, these materials are being individually cataloged. The poster outlines the decision-making process throughout the project regarding metadata standards, arrangement, classification scheme, and other relevant aspects of providing access to these …
Insects Join The Consciousness Fray, Bjorn H. Merker
Insects Join The Consciousness Fray, Bjorn H. Merker
Animal Sentience
Klein & Barron's review of recent insect neurobiology helps correct the impression that insect behavior is orchestrated without the benefit of central integrative mechanisms. Given their existence, the authors go on to ask whether these central mechanisms also feature the kind of integrative operations that support sentience, and propose that they do. Along the way they raise a number of conceptual and evidentiary issues of fundamental importance for the neuroscience of consciousness, allowing me to comment favorably on a number of them. I conclude by pointing to ways in which the conception of insect sentience they outline might be tested …

SIDLIT Conference
Are your students having difficulty with research topics? How about proper source citations in their research papers? Wouldn’t it be nice to have your own, personal librarian to help with these issues? Emporia State University’s William Allen White Library staff has partnered with Information Technology/Learning Technologies to create the Embedded Librarian program. A specific role was developed for the LMS to allow the embedded librarian to create content, create and manage discussion topics and to communicate directly with the students in the course. The embedded librarian is a click away to answer research questions, provide copyright/source citation advice, or to …

No, We Don’T Just Read Books All Day. Developing The Statistical Narrative/Infographic For Technical Services, Amy B. Parsons
Faculty Bibliography
This poster illustrates the development of statistical narratives for the work that is done in cataloging and technical services. Our work is behind the scenes but we do the technical work that transforms ordinary books into library books with access points for discoverability. Using infographics, tech services staff can illustrate the quality, quantity, and value of our important work in the library.

This poster is an example of the work I have created using cataloging statistics from Sierra, Google Sheets, and Excel. The graphs illustrate the number of books I have cataloged and discarded throughout a span of years. The graphs tell a story with the numbers. This is called a statistical narrative. These stories can be created by any library department and ultimately allow outsiders, and constituents to see the value of the academic library.

Manuscript Collection Finding Aids
Finding aid and full text (Click on "Additional Files" below) for Manuscripts Small Collection 3043. Letter, 9 July 1837, of Josiah Willam Ware to his cousin George W. Williams of Paris, Kentucky. Writing from Springfield, Virginia, Ware describes steamboat mishaps on his trip home from Maysville, Kentucky, and chides Williams good-naturedly on his religion and on his Whig sympathies, which he believes may gain Williams a seat in Congress but will prevent him from becoming president. He also refers to their family’s raising of livestock.

Since the year 1500, almost 900 species around the world have officially become extinct. Several of these species resided in Canada and though some are well known to the public, others are not. Here, briefly, are stories of five of them.

"Capstone Officials" And Public Records: Risk, Buy-In, And Archival Selection, Ruth E. Bryan
Library Presentations
Use of records schedules as appraisal tools works well for routine records held by low-level employees in public institutions. Records created by top-level public officials, however, can be more challenging to schedule. Using NARA's recent definition of "capstone officials" as a starting concept, panelists representing public universities and state and federal governments present case studies from their own institutions dealing with policy creation for capstone officials' records, records schedules and public records laws, and archival selection.

Using a within subjects design, three emotion regulation strategies (compassion‐focused reappraisal, benefit‐focused reappraisal, and offense rumination) were tested for their effects on forgiveness, well‐being, and event‐related potentials (ERPs). Participants (N = 37) recalled a recent interpersonal offense as the context for each emotion regulation strategy. Both decisional and emotional forgiveness increased significantly for the two reappraisal strategies compared to offense rumination. Compassion‐focused reappraisal prompted the greatest increase in both decisional and emotional forgiveness. Furthermore, both reappraisal strategies increased positively oriented well‐being measures (e.g., joy, gratitude) compared to offense rumination, with compassion‐focused reappraisal demonstrating the largest effect on empathy. Late positive …

The Role Of Client Avoidance On Ptsd Recovery Throughout The Course Of Trauma Therapy, Chelsea Alyssa Gloth
The Role Of Client Avoidance On Ptsd Recovery Throughout The Course Of Trauma Therapy, Chelsea Alyssa Gloth
Dissertations
The accumulation of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) over the past few decades has contributed to the development of clinical treatment guidelines (Chambless & Ollendick, 2001; Forbes et al., 2010; Truax & Thomas, 2003). Two treatments that have gained substantial support are Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). Although these treatments result in most participants losing their PTSD diagnosis and obtaining meaningful reductions in symptoms, some clients remain refractory to treatment. Researchers have worked to identify predictors of treatment outcome, but have given minimal attention to aspects of client avoidance as …
