Muslim Youth Unemployment And Expat Jihadism - Bored To Death?, Moamen Gouda, Marcus Marktanner

Faculty Articles

hile the presence of foreign fighters in military conflict has been a regular ingredient of jihad, never before in modern history have foreign fighters gathered at the scale and speed as they have in the territory of the so-called Islamic State. As the foreign fighter phenomenon in Syria and Iraq pose severe security risks for the sender countries, especially from battlefield returnees and lone-wolf sympathizers, it becomes imperative to better understand the push factors of expat jihadism. Empirical studies of these factors are still scarce and often generate contradicting results. The objective of our paper is to contribute to the …

Cultural Adaptations To Psychotherapy: Real World Applications, Shahana Koslofsky, Melanie M. Domenech-Rodriguez Sep 2016

Cultural Adaptations To Psychotherapy: Real World Applications, Shahana Koslofsky, Melanie M. Domenech-Rodriguez

Psychology Faculty Publications

This special issue was born of a series of challenges. As a scholar in the field of cultural adaptations, Domenech Rodríguez had presented and published numerous works, which were met with particular excitement from practitioners hoping to gain insights into how to translate research findings into their diverse clinical practices. When asked “how can I make these cultural adaptations with my clients?” her honest answer was, “I am not sure.” The question posed a wonderful challenge to make research relevant in the real world. How could we take the lessons learned from cultural adaptations conducted as part of grant-funded work …

Whose Finger On The Nuclear Trigger: The U.S. Election Focuses The Mind On Who Will Be Commander-In-Chief - And Why We Continue To Have Nuclear Weapons Anyway, Erika Simpson

Political Science Publications

The U.S. presidential election underscores the critical issue of nuclear weapons and the challenges of nuclear deterrence. As the next commander-in-chief may have to make split-second decisions on nuclear strikes, the stakes are high given the rapid response times required during crises. The article critiques both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump’s positions on nuclear strategy, emphasizing the risks associated with their potential decision-making. Despite the pressing need for nuclear disarmament, U.S. candidates show limited commitment to eliminating nuclear arsenals. The global movement for disarmament, including efforts by mayors, religious leaders, and organizations, calls for urgent action. Canada, despite its NATO …

The Effects Of Cultural Cognition And Parent Perceptions Of Autism Spectrum Disorder On Perceptions Of Intervention Efficacy, Jillian R. Reiher Sep 2016

The Effects Of Cultural Cognition And Parent Perceptions Of Autism Spectrum Disorder On Perceptions Of Intervention Efficacy, Jillian R. Reiher

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has identified many interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Some of these interventions are evidence-based; others are not. However, previous research has also found that parents select interventions for their children with ASD on the basis of several factors other than the evidence base, including their emotional representations of ASD and their perceptions of the timeline, consequences, and causes of ASD. Other research has found that people’s cultural worldviews influence their decision-making on a variety of social and political issues. The current study examined the relationships between these factors and parents’ perceptions of the efficacy of evidence-based and …

Multi-Battle Contests: An Experimental Study, Shakun D. Mago, Roman M. Sheremeta Sep 2016

Multi-Battle Contests: An Experimental Study, Shakun D. Mago, Roman M. Sheremeta

ESI Working Papers

We examine behavior of subjects in simultaneous and sequential multi-battle contests, where each individual battle is modeled as an all-pay auction with complete information. In simultaneous best-of-three contests, subjects are predicted to make positive bids in all three battles, but we find that subjects often make positive bids in only two battles. In sequential contests, theory predicts sizable bids in the first battle and no bids in the subsequent battles. Contrary to this prediction, subjects significantly underbid in the first battle and overbid in subsequent battles. Consequently, instead of always ending in the second battle, contests often proceeds to the …

The Utilization Of Aquatic Bushmeat From Small Cetaceans And Manatees In South America And West Africa, A. Mel Cosentino, Sue Fisher Sep 2016

The Utilization Of Aquatic Bushmeat From Small Cetaceans And Manatees In South America And West Africa, A. Mel Cosentino, Sue Fisher

Anthropogenics and Population Decline Collection

Aquatic bushmeat can be defined as the products derived from wild aquatic megafauna (e.g., marine mammals) that are used for human consumption and non-food purposes, including traditional medicine. It is obtained through illegal or unregulated hunts as well as from stranded (dead or alive) and bycaught animals. In most South American and West African countries aquatic mammals are or have been taken for bushmeat, including 33 small cetaceans and all three manatee species. Of these, two cetacean species are listed in the IUCN red list as “near threatened,” and one as “vulnerable,” as are all manatee species. Additionally, 22 cetacean …

Using Grounded Theory To Discover The Preparation Efforts And Subsequent Resiliency Of Populations With Low Socioeconomic Status, Elizabeth Montana Jones Sep 2016

Using Grounded Theory To Discover The Preparation Efforts And Subsequent Resiliency Of Populations With Low Socioeconomic Status, Elizabeth Montana Jones

Student Theses and Dissertations

Low income populations are disproportionately affected by the impacts of disaster. Research, education and understanding can lead to an alleviation of this imbalance. In this text, qualitative grounded theory methodology is used to develop a theory relating to how low income populations prepare for disaster and how this preparedness ultimately affects their resiliency. A small sample population of individuals from a moderate-sized community in the mid-South meeting the poverty guidelines set by the Department of Health and Human Services have participated in recorded interviews using guided questions. These interviews have been transcribed by the researcher, coded and interpreted to develop …

Goodell And Drones, Richard C. Crepeau Sep 2016

Goodell And Drones, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

For the past few years the NFL, through the pious pronouncements from its Commissioner, Roger Goodell, has professed a heavy commitment to safety, with a particular focus on hits to the head. This of course followed years of cover-up and denial of any connection between CTE and football related head trauma, not to mention an active and aggressive campaign against anyone and any evidence to the contrary.

Research Brief: "Unmet Mental Healthcare Need And Suicidal Ideation Among U.S. Veterans", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief is about the relationship between veterans' unfulfilled mental healthcare needs and suicidal ideation. In policy and practice, physicians should provide information to veterans about organizations and initiatives for assistance, and veterans' organizations should address socioeconomic needs, mental healthcare needs, and alcohol and substance use among the veteran population; policymakers should provide healthcare services for veterans to ensure that they receive mental healthcare when they need it. Suggestions for future research include reporting techniques besides self-reporting, incorporating veterans into the study who might have mental health concerns but are not clinically diagnosed, and looking at the impact of family …

Environmental Implications Of Consumer Preferences And Policy Incentives For Plug-In Vehicles In China And The U.S., John Helveston

Link Foundation Energy Fellowship Reports

China’s State Council has linked this vision to its economic development plans, which emphasize industrial upgrading to higher technologies and higher value added roles in global production chains (Howell et al., 2014; State Council, 2012). Given this context, this project comprises the last two of my three-paper Ph.D. thesis, which assesses how characteristics of China’s domestic environment, including consumer preferences, national and local institutions, market characteristics, and policies, are associated with the development and adoption of PEVs in China.

Histology Collection

Objective: The morphological and biochemical impact of a short-period of starvation on Japanese quail was investigated.

Materials and Methods: Ten adult male Japanese quail were divided into two groups; control fed and starved. The control-fed group was offered food and water ad libitum and the starved group was subjected to a short-period of food deprivation. After 2.5 days, the serum was obtained and different parameters including the total protein, AST, ALT, triglyceride, HDL, LDL, creatinine and urea were assessed. Gastrointestinal tract, stomach and liver were excised and their masses were estimated. Paraffin and resin embedded sections from the proventriculus, gizzard, …

Sanitation As A Measure Of Development: A Rationale For Its Use, With Global And Subnational Analyses Of Its Factors, Catherine J. Harthorn Sep 2016

Sanitation As A Measure Of Development: A Rationale For Its Use, With Global And Subnational Analyses Of Its Factors, Catherine J. Harthorn

Student Theses and Dissertations

Sanitation is an ideal non-monetary measure of broadly distributed development. Compared to other global development indicators, it reduces volatility, resolves equivalency, achieves closer concept fidelity, and features greater data availability. Factors affecting rates of sanitation in cross-national comparisons include democracy (with less influence in the developing world), fewer restrictions to political freedoms or civil liberties, better governance, communism, greater wealth, less poverty, urbanization, population density, and slower population growth. Factors affecting change in sanitation rates include microfinance activity. Subnational factors which influence rates of sanitation in India are wealth and communism. The factors affecting the change in sanitation in India …

Introduction: Spatial Big Data And Everyday Life, Agnieszka Leszczynski, Jeremy Crampton Sep 2016

Introduction: Spatial Big Data And Everyday Life, Agnieszka Leszczynski, Jeremy Crampton

Geography Faculty Publications

Spatial Big Data—be this natively geocoded content, geographical metadata, or data that itself refers to spaces and places—has become a pervasive presence in the spaces and practices of everyday life. Beyond preoccupations with “the geotag” and with mapping geocoded social media content, this special theme explores what it means to encounter and experience spatial Big Data as a quotidian phenomenon that is both spatial, characterized by and enacting of material spatialities, and spatializing, configuring relations between subjects, objects, and spaces in new and unprecedented ways.

The Long Reach Of Nurturing Family Environments: Links With Midlife Emotion- Regulatory Styles And Late-Life Security In Intimate Relationships, Waldinger J. Robert, Schulz S. Marc Sep 2016

The Long Reach Of Nurturing Family Environments: Links With Midlife Emotion- Regulatory Styles And Late-Life Security In Intimate Relationships, Waldinger J. Robert, Schulz S. Marc

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Does the warmth of children’s family environments predict the quality of their intimate relationships at the other end of the life span? Using data collected prospectively on 81 men from adolescence through the eighth and ninth decades of life, this study tested the hypotheses that warmer relationships with parents in childhood predict greater security of attachment to intimate partners in late life, and that this link is mediated in part by the degree to which individuals in midlife rely on emotion-regulatory styles that facilitate or inhibit close relationship connections. Findings supported this mediational model, showing a positive link between more …
