The Strategic Global Climate And The Construction Of The Strategic Global Climate Scale, Leah Rose Wolfeld Oct 2016

The Strategic Global Climate And The Construction Of The Strategic Global Climate Scale, Leah Rose Wolfeld

Theses and Dissertations

As the world grows smaller, globalization increasingly impacts organizations, and many organizations have difficulty preparing for such a complex and unpredictable environment. The Strategic Global Climate consists of the employee perceptions of the policies, processes, and rewarded behaviors that promote organizational effectiveness in the complex global arena. A favorable Strategic Global Climate communicates the organization’s values and aligns leadership and business strategies for prosperity in the global arena. Additionally, organizations with a Strategic Global Climate should develop a strong global leadership bench strength, experience smooth international business partnerships, and have a competitive advantage. Organizations must be able to measure such …

Redefining Our Territory: Reaching Pre-Matriculation Students With Case-Based, Online Instruction, Cynthia M. Schmidt, Teresa Hartman Oct 2016

Redefining Our Territory: Reaching Pre-Matriculation Students With Case-Based, Online Instruction, Cynthia M. Schmidt, Teresa Hartman

Posters and Presentations: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

Online educational tools have made it possible for our library to claim some educational territory that was previously unavailable to us, the pre-matriculation period. During the summer of 2015 we were able to add a two-part, case-based, online tutorial to our incoming medical students’ pre-matriculation materials. We created the story of Sarah Pilger, a hypothetical, obese, pregnant teenager whose pregnancy is complicated by a fetal toxoplasmosis. The case introduces the incoming students to almost all the resources they might want to use while enrolled at UNMC and also introduces students to the roles of the many healthcare professionals who are …

Initial Validation Of The Race-Ethnicity Supervision Scale (Ress), Stephanie Bartell Oct 2016

Initial Validation Of The Race-Ethnicity Supervision Scale (Ress), Stephanie Bartell

Dissertations (1934 -)

In this dissertation study, the author reports on the initial psychometric evaluation of the Race-Ethnicity Supervision Scale (RESS) with data collected from three studies and 307 mental health counseling and psychology trainees. Exploratory factor analyses yielded a 29-item scale with a four factor model (a) Promoting Supervisee Racial/Ethnic Cultural Competence, (b) Development and Responsivity to Cultural Identity in Supervision, (c) Perceived Supervisor Cultural Competence, and (d) Harmful Supervisory Practices. RESS scores were internally consistent and remained stable over a 3-week period. Construct validity evidence suggested RESS scores were positively related to MSI scores and unrelated to social desirability. Limitations and …

In Plain Sight: Changing Representations Of "Biracial" People In Film 1903-2015, Charles Lawrence Gray Oct 2016

In Plain Sight: Changing Representations Of "Biracial" People In Film 1903-2015, Charles Lawrence Gray

Dissertations (1934 -)

Rooted in slavery, the United States in both law and custom has a long history of adhering to the one drop rule–the stipulation that any amount of African ancestry constitutes an individual as black. Given this history, decidedly mixed race people have been subjected to a number of degrading stereotypes. In examining the three broad themes of the tragic mulatto, racial passing, and racelessness in cinema, this dissertation asks to what extent film representations of mixed race characters have had the capacity to educate audiences beyond stereotypes. Although a number of film scholars and critics have analyzed mixed race characters …

An Approach-Avoidance Framework Of Workplace Aggression, D. Lance Ferris, Ming Yan, Vivien K. G. Lim, Yuanyi Chen, Shereen Fatimah Oct 2016

An Approach-Avoidance Framework Of Workplace Aggression, D. Lance Ferris, Ming Yan, Vivien K. G. Lim, Yuanyi Chen, Shereen Fatimah

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The number of constructs developed to assess workplace aggression has flourished in recent years, leading to confusion over what meaningful differences exist (if any) between the constructs. We argue that one way to frame the field of workplace aggression is via approach–avoidance principles, with various workplace aggression constructs(e.g., abusive supervision, supervisor undermining, and workplace ostracism) differentially predicting specific approach or avoidance emotions and behaviors. Using two multi-wave field samples of employees, we demonstrate the utility of approach–avoidance principles in conceptualizing workplace aggression constructs, as well as the processes and boundary conditions through which they uniquely influence outcomes. Implications for the …

The Too-Much Precision Effect: When And Why Precise Anchors Backfire With Experts, David D. Loschelder, Malte Friese, Michael Schaerer, Adam D. Galinsky Oct 2016

The Too-Much Precision Effect: When And Why Precise Anchors Backfire With Experts, David D. Loschelder, Malte Friese, Michael Schaerer, Adam D. Galinsky

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Past research has suggested a fundamental principle of price precision: The more precise an opening price, the more it anchors counteroffers. The present research challenges this principle by demonstrating a too-much-precision effect. Five experiments (involving 1,320 experts and amateurs in real-estate, jewelry, car, and human-resources negotiations) showed that increasing the precision of an opening offer had positive linear effects for amateurs but inverted-U-shaped effects for experts. Anchor precision backfired because experts saw too much precision as reflecting a lack of competence. This negative effect held unless first movers gave rationales that boosted experts’ perception of their competence. Statistical mediation and …

Need Based Aid From Selective Universities And The Achievement Gap Between Rich And Poor, Sunha Myong Oct 2016

Need Based Aid From Selective Universities And The Achievement Gap Between Rich And Poor, Sunha Myong

Research Collection School Of Economics

I study the role of need-based aid from selective universities in closing the achievement gap between rich and poor high school students. I focus on the incentive aspect of need-based aid that can change high school students’ effort choices. The impact of increasing need-based aid depends on the extent of borrowing constraints and how competition affects the relative performance of low- and high-income students. I develop a structural model of students’ learning, application, and admission processes, and estimate it with the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002, a nationally representative sample. I use a geographic variation in costs of attending selective …

Catalyst Of Business Cycle Synchronization In East Asia, Hui-Ying. Sng, Liyu Dou, Pradumna Bickram. Rana Oct 2016

Catalyst Of Business Cycle Synchronization In East Asia, Hui-Ying. Sng, Liyu Dou, Pradumna Bickram. Rana

Research Collection School Of Economics

The essential question this paper seeks to answer is whether the business cycle co-movement in East Asia are fostered by internal bilateral trade within the region, specifically, intra-industry trade or by external forces like the influence of the world’s largest economy, namely, the United States. This paper examines the extent and robustness of the relationship between trade intensity and business cycle synchronization for nine East Asian countries in the period 1965–2008. Unlike previous studies which assume away the region’s concurrent connection with the rest of the world, in our regressions we control for both the US effect and the exchange …

New Skills At Work: Managing Skills Challenges In Asean-5, Kim Song Tan, James T. H. Tang Oct 2016

New Skills At Work: Managing Skills Challenges In Asean-5, Kim Song Tan, James T. H. Tang

Research Collection School Of Economics

The dynamic economies of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines (ASEAN-5) boasts a growth rate of close to 5% a year despite the sluggish global economy. However, whether ASEAN-5 can grow to be significant players in the global economy will depend critically on their abilities to train workers with relevant job skills required by growth-driving industries. This challenge requires governments and employers to work together and develop coherent policies and targeted incentive structures for workers to acquire general and job-specific skills. The report Managing Skills Challenges in ASEAN-5 provides insights and recommendations on how the ASEAN-5 countries can respond …

A Practical Test For Strict Exogeneity In Linear Panel Data Models With Fixed Effects, Liangjun Su, Yonghui Zhang, Jie Wei Oct 2016

A Practical Test For Strict Exogeneity In Linear Panel Data Models With Fixed Effects, Liangjun Su, Yonghui Zhang, Jie Wei

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper provides a practical test for strict exogeneity in linear panel data models with fixed effects when the number of individuals N goes to infinity while the number of time periods T is fixed. The test is based on the supremum of a sequence of Wald test statistics. Under suitable conditions, we establish the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic and consistency of the test. A bootstrap procedure is proposed to improve the finite sample performance and the validity of the procedure is justified. We investigate the finite sample performance of the test via a small set of Monte …

Robust Forecast Comparison, Sainan Jin, Valentina Corradi, Norman R. Swanson Oct 2016

Robust Forecast Comparison, Sainan Jin, Valentina Corradi, Norman R. Swanson

Research Collection School Of Economics

Forecast accuracy is typically measured in terms of a given loss function. However, as a consequence of the use of misspecified models in multiple model comparisons, relative forecast rankings are loss function dependent. In order to address this issue, a novel criterion for forecast evaluation that utilizes the entire distribution of forecast errors is introduced. In particular, we introduce the concepts of general-loss (GL) forecast superiority and convex-loss (CL) forecast superiority; and we develop tests for GL (CL) superiority that are based on an out-of-sample generalization of the tests introduced by Linton, Maasoumi, and Whang (2005, Review of Economic Studies …

Estimating The Volatility Occupation Time Via Regularized Laplace Inversion, Jia Li, Viktor Todorov, Tauchen Oct 2016

Estimating The Volatility Occupation Time Via Regularized Laplace Inversion, Jia Li, Viktor Todorov, Tauchen

Research Collection School Of Economics

We propose a consistent functional estimator for the occupation time of the spot variance of an asset price observed at discrete times on a finite interval with the mesh of the observation grid shrinking to zero. The asset price is modeled nonparametrically as a continuous-time Itô semimartingale with nonvanishing diffusion coefficient. The estimation procedure contains two steps. In the first step we estimate the Laplace transform of the volatility occupation time and, in the second step, we conduct a regularized Laplace inversion. Monte Carlo evidence suggests that the proposed estimator has good small-sample performance and in particular it is far …

Safety Of Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide Battery Packs In Transit Bus Applications, Timothy Cleary, Marc Serra Bosch, Jim Kreibick, Joel Anstrom Oct 2016

Safety Of Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide Battery Packs In Transit Bus Applications, Timothy Cleary, Marc Serra Bosch, Jim Kreibick, Joel Anstrom

Mineta Transportation Institute

The future of mass transportation is clearly moving toward the increased efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction of hybrid and electric vehicles. With the introduction of high-power/high-energy storage devices such as lithium ion battery systems serving as a key element in the system, valid safety and security concerns emerge. This is especially true when the attractive high-specific-energy and power-chemistry lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA) is used. This chemistry provides great performance but presents a safety and security risk when used in large quantities, such as for a large passenger bus. If triggered, the cell can completely fuel its own fire, …

The Impact Of Transit-Oriented Development On Social Capital, Robert B. Noland, Orin T. Puniello, Stephanie Dipetrillo Oct 2016

The Impact Of Transit-Oriented Development On Social Capital, Robert B. Noland, Orin T. Puniello, Stephanie Dipetrillo

Mineta Transportation Institute

This paper focuses on the ability of Transit Oriented Development (TOD) to improve social capital and interactions within a community. The expectation is that TOD has a positive impact on the lifestyle and activities of individuals who reside, work, and frequent these locations, and that this can include increases in social capital. Using data from a survey of transit station locations in New Jersey, the authors examine how proximity to the station and various built environment variables are associated with different measures of social capital, derived from responses to survey questions. These questions inquire about respondents’ perceptions of their neighborhood …

The Us Transit Bus Manufacturing Industry, David Czerwinski, Xu (Cissy) Hartling, Jing Zhang

Mineta Transportation Institute

Manufacturing buses for the US transit market has been a challenging business over the last several decades. It is a small market with volatile demand. Many manufacturers have gone bankrupt, left the market, or been acquired by competitors. Manufacturers of transit buses in the US must comply with a wide range of operational and design regulations. The most salient policy areas include regulating emissions, disabled access, procurement, alternative fuels, the Altoona Test, pooled purchases and piggybacking, spare ratios, workforce training, minimum useful life, Buy America, and research & development (R&D). The purpose of this report is to provide policy makers …

Experiences Of Credibility: Female Instructors Of Color At Faith Based Universities, Jamilah L. Spears Oct 2016

Experiences Of Credibility: Female Instructors Of Color At Faith Based Universities, Jamilah L. Spears

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research shows that the credibility of instructors of color is often questioned by White students, while other studies prove that male instructors are also perceived as more credible than female instructors (Hendrix, 1997; Perry, Moore, Edwards, Acosta, & Frey, 2009). When these two findings are coupled, it seems that there might be a significant barrier to overcome for female instructors of color in their everyday instruction. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore perceived credibility for female instructors of color at faith-based universities, namely, Evangelical Christian universities. Based on my analysis of the interview data, these six female …

The Impact Of Failing To Identify Suspect Effort In Patients Undergoing Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) Assessment, Paul S. Marshall, James B. Hoelzle, Danielle Heyerdahl, Matthew W. Nelson Oct 2016

The Impact Of Failing To Identify Suspect Effort In Patients Undergoing Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) Assessment, Paul S. Marshall, James B. Hoelzle, Danielle Heyerdahl, Matthew W. Nelson

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

This retrospective study examines how many adult patients would plausibly receive a diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) if performance and symptom validity measures were not administered during neuropsychological evaluations. Five hundred fifty-four patients were extracted from an archival clinical dataset. A total of 102 were diagnosed with ADHD based on cognitive testing, behavior rating scales, effort testing, and clinical interview; 115 were identified as putting forth suspect effort in accordance with the Slick, Sherman, and Iverson (1999) criteria. From a clinical decision-making perspective, suspect effort and ADHD groups were nearly indistinguishable on ADHD behavior, executive function, and functional impairment rating …

Factor Analysis Of The Milwaukee Inventory For Subtypes Of Trichotillomania-Adult Version, Jennifer R. Alexander, David C. Houghton, Michael P. Twohig, Martin E. Franklin, Stephen M. Saunders, Angela M. Neal-Barnett, Scott N. Compton, Douglas W. Woods Oct 2016

Factor Analysis Of The Milwaukee Inventory For Subtypes Of Trichotillomania-Adult Version, Jennifer R. Alexander, David C. Houghton, Michael P. Twohig, Martin E. Franklin, Stephen M. Saunders, Angela M. Neal-Barnett, Scott N. Compton, Douglas W. Woods

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

The Milwaukee Inventory for Subtypes of Trichotillomania-Adult Version (MIST-A; Flessner et al., 2008) measures the degree to which hair pulling in Trichotillomania (TTM) can be described as “automatic” (i.e., done without awareness and unrelated to affective states) and/or “focused” (i.e., done with awareness and to regulate affective states). Despite preliminary evidence in support of the psychometric properties of the MIST-A, emerging research suggests the original factor structure may not optimally capture TTM phenomenology. Using data from a treatment-seeking TTM sample, the current study examined the factor structure of the MIST-A via exploratory factor analysis. The resulting two factor solution suggested …

Trauma And Trichotillomania: A Tenuous Relationship, David C. Houghton, Abel S. Mathew, Michael P. Twohig, Stephen M. Saunders, Martin E. Franklin, Scott N. Compton, Angela M. Neal-Barnett, Douglas W. Woods Oct 2016

Trauma And Trichotillomania: A Tenuous Relationship, David C. Houghton, Abel S. Mathew, Michael P. Twohig, Stephen M. Saunders, Martin E. Franklin, Scott N. Compton, Angela M. Neal-Barnett, Douglas W. Woods

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Some have argued that hair pulling in trichotillomania (TTM) is triggered by traumatic events, but reliable evidence linking trauma to TTM is limited. However, research has shown that hair pulling is associated with emotion regulation, suggesting a connection between negative affect and TTM. We investigated the associations between trauma, negative affect, and hair pulling in a cross-sectional sample of treatment seeking adults with TTM (N=85). In the current study, participants’ self-reported traumatic experiences were assessed during a structured clinical interview, and participants completed several measures of hair pulling severity, global TTM severity, depression, anxiety, experiential avoidance, and quality …

Game-Framing Cognitive Assessments To Improve Applicant Perceptions, Andrew Burnett Collmus Oct 2016

Game-Framing Cognitive Assessments To Improve Applicant Perceptions, Andrew Burnett Collmus

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Research has shown that although cognitive testing is key to quality hiring, applicants often react poorly to cognitive ability tests. Applicant reactions theory indicates that time-length judgments of a selection procedure can affect applicant perceptions. It was thus hypothesized that game-framing, the act of labeling something a game without changing the content, would cause participants to perceive that time was moving faster while completing a battery of cognitive ability tests. Similarly, it was expected that game-framing would increase test motivation and decrease test anxiety. Perceived length was tested as a mediator for the effects of game-framing on test anxiety and …

Effects Of Auditory Vection Speed And Directional Congruence On Perceptions Of Visual Vection, Isabella Alexis Gagliano Oct 2016

Effects Of Auditory Vection Speed And Directional Congruence On Perceptions Of Visual Vection, Isabella Alexis Gagliano

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Spatial disorientation is a major contributor to aircraft mishaps. One potential contributing factor is vection, an illusion of self-motion. Although vection is commonly thought of as a visual illusion, it can also be produced through audition. The purpose of the current experiment was to explore interactions between conflicting visual and auditory vection cues, specifically with regard to the speed and direction of rotation. The ultimate goal was to explore the extent to which aural vection could diminish or enhance the perception of visual vection. The study used a 3 × 2 within-groups factorial design. Participants were exposed to three levels …

Innovation Adoption And Diffusion In Synchronous Tutoring Owls: A Cross-Contextual Case Study Using Diffusion Of Innovations Theory, Cynthia Marie Pengilly Oct 2016

Innovation Adoption And Diffusion In Synchronous Tutoring Owls: A Cross-Contextual Case Study Using Diffusion Of Innovations Theory, Cynthia Marie Pengilly

English Theses & Dissertations

Synchronous online tutoring shares many attributes with face-to-face tutoring such as real-time, document collaboration, and conversational cues provided by audio and video, yet writing center professionals know seemingly little about synchronous tutoring OWLs due to the lack of formal publications about synchronous online tutoring coupled with the prevailing paradigm that seeks to transfer face-to-face tutoring practices to online synchronous tutoring, which overshadows the innovation processes taking place in synchronous OWLs. The purpose of this study was to document emergent practices in the use of two different synchronous tutoring technologies and the processes by which those practices were adopted and implemented …
