Drivers Of Urban Sprawl In Urbanizing China – A Political Ecology Analysis, Yiping Fang, Anirban Pal
Drivers Of Urban Sprawl In Urbanizing China – A Political Ecology Analysis, Yiping Fang, Anirban Pal
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
Chinese cities have undergone a process of urbanization that has resulted in significant urban sprawl in the past 20 years. This paper uses the 'ecology of actors' framework to analyze the interactions between various state, market and civil society players that result in excessive land conversion from agricultural to urban use. The paper shows that under the existing institutional setting, the interests of most actors involved in the process are aligned towards greater land development and growth. The more land is developed, the more land lease revenue for the local government, the more profit for developers, and the more opportunities …

Coming Of Age At The End Of Nature: A Generation Faces Living On A Changed Planet, Amy K. Coplen
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
This chapter appears in "Coming of Age at the End of Nature: A Generation Faces Living on a Changed Planet," published by Trinity University Press.
Coming of Age at the End of Nature explores a new kind of environmental writing. This powerful anthology gathers the passionate voices of young writers who have grown up in an environmentally damaged and compromised world. Each contributor has come of age since Bill McKibben foretold the doom of humanity’s ancient relationship with a pristine earth in his prescient 1988 warning of climate change, The End of Nature.

The atypical antipsychotic drug clozapine remains one of most effective treatments for schizophrenia, given a lack of extrapyramidal side effects, improvements in negative symptoms, cognitive impairment, and in symptoms in treatment-resistant schizophrenia. The adverse effects of clozapine, including agranulocytosis, make finding a safe clozapine-like a drug a goal for drug developers. The drug discrimination paradigm is a model of interoceptive stimulus that has been used in an effort to screen experimental drugs for clozapine-like atypical antipsychotic effects. The present study was conducted to elucidate the receptor-mediated stimulus properties that form this clozapine discriminative cue by testing selective receptor ligands in …

The 2016 Senate And Presidential Elections In Louisiana, Edward E. Chevernak, Elizabeth Jahasz, Anthony Licciardi
Survey Research Center Publications
The University of New Orleans’ Survey Research Center (SRC) conducted a live interviewer telephone poll of 603 likely voters in Louisiana. Those interviewed were randomly selected from a list of likely voters from the voter file obtained from the Louisiana Secretary of State. A likely voter is defined as an individual who has voted at least three times in the last five statewide elections.1 Interviews were conducted from October 15 through October 21, 2016. The combined landline and cell phone sample matches the regional, gender, age, and race parameters of the population of likely voters in Louisiana. The overall survey …

Image As Evidence: A Citation Analysis Of Visual Resources In American History Scholarship, 2010–2014, Jillian M. Ewalt
Marian Library Faculty Publications
The author examines the use of visual resources in American history scholarship over a five-year period. The article reports on a citation analysis of 554 images published in two top American history journals from 2010 through 2014. The data collected in this study documents the extent to which images were used in history research and the types of libraries and archival repositories from which historians accessed images. Based on the study data, the article explores characteristics of frequently cited libraries and archival repositories, the capacity in which images function as historical evidence, and implications for libraries based on the findings.

A Pilot Study Of Comparison Gesture Analysis In Motion Driven Video Games, Fabrizio Valerio Covone, Brian Vaughan, Charlie Cullen
Conference Papers
This study investigates whether there are significant differences in the gestures made by gamers and non-gamers whilst playing commercial games that employ gesture inputs. Specifically, the study focuses on testing a prototype of multimodal capture tool that we used to obtain real-time audio, video and skeletal gesture data. Additionally, we developed an experimental design framework for the acquisition of spatio-temporal gesture data and analysed the vector magnitude of a gesture to compare the relative displacement of each participant whilst playing a game.
First-Time Buyers’ Grant Is For The Developers’ Back Pocket, Lorcan Sirr
First-Time Buyers’ Grant Is For The Developers’ Back Pocket, Lorcan Sirr
Media
Over the last few weeks, political feelers have gone out to test the likely response to a grant for first-time buyers. Perhaps surprisingly for the government, the reaction has not been totally positive. The broad idea is that first-time buyers would get a lump sum payment, or other credit, of between €5,000 and €15,000 to help them to meet newmortgage lending thresholds, depending on the price of the house they are buying, perhaps up to €350,000.
The Interaction Between Perfectionism And Rumination Predicting State Self-Compassion, Caitlin A. Sharp
The Interaction Between Perfectionism And Rumination Predicting State Self-Compassion, Caitlin A. Sharp
Student Publications
Recent research has revealed self-compassion to be associated with many aspects of mental wellness. The present study investigates the relationship between perfectionism and rumination in predicting state self-compassion separately for both conscientious and self-evaluative forms of perfectionism. We hypothesized that perfectionism would interact with rumination in predicting state self-compassion such that there would be a negative association between occurrence of rumination and state-self compassion that would be more prominent in those with lower levels of perfectionism in regards to self-evaluative, but not conscientious perfectionism. To test these predictions, participants filled out a perfectionism inventory and completed a four minute ruminative …

The Georgia Public Library Service And Georgia’S Public Libraries: A Timeline Of Important Events In Georgia Public Library History, J. Elaine Hardy, Peggy Chambliss
Georgia Library Quarterly
Georgia’s public libraries have a rich history demonstrating the commitment of Georgia’s leaders and citizenry to free access to information. This updated timeline is a compilation of historical data on public libraries in Georgia and a history of the Georgia Public Library Service and shows the development of Georgia’s libraries from small collections, sometimes in people’s homes, to the diverse collections of multiple media we have access to today. It begins with the first known subscription library created in Savannah and ends with the current status of public library service in the state.

From Basement Storage To Online Access: Processing And Digitizing The Mathematical Association Of America General Mathematics Film Production Elements, Justin Kovar
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
A two-part case study of a film project processed and digitized by an archival institution, from the planning stages through online access. Using a single title, "The Kakeya Problem," as an entry point, these videos detail the process of shipping, identifying, rehousing, describing, and digitizing a film collection, with a focus on the rationale that shaped these processes at the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History.

Art Of Defiance: Found Footage, Legal Provenance, And The “Aesthetics Of Access”, Claudy W. Op Den Kamp
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
This essay focuses on the artistic practice of found footage filmmaking—defined as the practice of creating new films with extant material—and the relation of found footage filmmaking to Lucas Hilderbrand’s 2009 concept of “aesthetics of access”. A focus on legal provenance of the source material, as well as techniques of circumvention that are used when obtaining material for compilation, will be used to analyze the aesthetic form of found footage films, both within and outside an institutional archive context. It will conclude that these films as well as the changing practices within which they are produced emphasize the interdependent relationship …
