The Mediating Role Of Sibling Maintenance Behavior Expectations And Perceptions In The Relationship Between Family Communication Patterns And Relationship Satisfaction, Elizabeth Dorrance Hall, Jenna Mcnallie

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Sibling relationships are influenced both by the behaviors performed within the relationship (e.g., relational work) and by the family system as a whole. This study extends family communication patterns theory (FCP) by examining whether communicative relationship maintenance plays a role in the relationship between FCP and sibling relationship satisfaction. Data from 327 adult siblings from across the United States tested using Hayes (2013) PROCESS revealed that conversation and conformity orientation had positive indirect effects on sibling relationship satisfaction through both (a) relational maintenance expectations and (b) perceptions of sibling actual maintenance behavior in nearly all models (i.e., including positivity, openness, …

Data Limitation? Lack Of Access To Data?” Recommendations On Data Compiling For Student Retention At Binghamton University, Helen Li

Capstone Projects 2015-Present

In the United States, the national freshmen retention rate is currently at 73.3%, while at Binghamton University, the freshmen retention rate is at 91%. While this percentage is already higher than most institutions, the university would like to continue their efforts in looking for new initiatives to help preserve and increase our overall retention rate. In continuation of the capstone project done last semester, I was provided a data set of non-returning freshmen students from Spring 2016 to identify additional patterns and trends that might emerge. Additional components were included to help supplement and add contrast to the previous capstone …

Direct Support Professional Turnove, Teresa D. Edwards Oct 2016

Direct Support Professional Turnove, Teresa D. Edwards

Capstone Projects 2015-Present

I began collecting vacancy trend data in 2008 to determine if there was an overall trend in the timing of vacancies, this would allow us to begin recruiting prior to increased staffing vacancies. There seemed to be an overall increase in staffing vacancies in April and a recovery in July. However, 2015 staffing trends became increasingly more problematic in a sense that we did not recover from the staffing shortage like we usually do and the turnover rate to date has reached a historic high.

College Foundation Scholarship Process Improvement Plan, Michael Sullivan

Capstone Projects 2015-Present

Scholarship support provided through the College at Oneonta Foundation to SUNY Oneonta makes up a substantial—and ever growing—portion of institutional scholarship resources. The College Foundation makes more than $2 million in scholarship resources available annually. The majority of scholarships made available through the College Foundation are not application based. Instead, College Foundation scholarships are awarded by various offices and departments on campus. The two offices making the largest number of awards are Admissions and Financial Aid (roughly 75% of all College Foundation Scholarships); the remaining scholarships are awarded by various Academic departments. While the majority of scholarship funds are allocated, …

Proposal To Better Support Religious Groups At Binghamton University, Mengdai Sun

Capstone Projects 2015-Present

In Spring 2016, I finished my internship in Multicultural Resources Center (MRC) at Binghamton University. With the purpose of promoting diversity on campus,MRC offers various training programs and educational opportunities for university students and staff. Currently, MRC has served cultural groups, LGBTQ,religious groups. However, it is lack of meaningful activities to support thereligious groups. Therefore, my project aims to help MRC to identify effective ways to better serve the religious community on campus. In 2011, President Obama launched the Interfaith and Community ServiceCampus Challenge. It encourages people from different religious and non- religious backgrounds addressing community challenges together. AlthoughBinghamton University is …

This article surveys the Access to Justice movement in the United States and proposes including more types of professionals to develop longer term solutions that will alleviate barriers to the court system. Making It Work: Supporting Contemporary Artists In Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Michael Curran Oct 2016

Making It Work: Supporting Contemporary Artists In Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Michael Curran

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Following the country’s political transition to democracy in the 1990s, a generation of Mongolian artists constructed an art movement rooted in the issues of the new society: transitional national identity, corrupt political and economic systems, and a growingly complex relationship with nature. The liberalization of the economy, however, hasn’t nurtured sustainable creative resources or helped artists reach domestic or international markets, pressuring them to find alternative ways to create livelihoods out of their craft. This study considers how emerging multidisciplinary artists sustain themselves through both formal and informal means, and the motivations behind their creative lifestyles.

Central to the study …

The Digitizing of ’34 documentary was created by staff at Georgia State University Library to share information about work on a National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) grant received in 2015. The grant funding provided professional digitization and transcription services for interviews created for The Uprising of ’34 (1995), a feature-length documentary that tells the story of the general textile strike across the south in the same year. While the interview was one-and-a-half hours in length, the interviews created for the documentary consist of over 200 hours of footage. The short documentary, an homage to the original documentary, provides …

The paper evaluated the Landsat Automated Land Cover Update Mapping (LALCUM) system designed to rapidly update a land cover map to a desired nominal year using a pre-existing reference land cover map. The system uses the Iteratively Reweighted Multivariate Alteration Detection (IRMAD) to identify areas of change and no change. The system then automatically generates large amounts of training samples (n > 1 million) in the no-change areas as input to an optimized Random Forest classifier. Experiments were conducted in the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa using a reference land cover map from 2008, a change mask between 2008 and …

: Biomass burning is a global phenomenon and systematic burned area mapping is of increasing importance for science and applications. With high spatial resolution and novelty in band design, the recently launched Sentinel-2A satellite provides a new opportunity for moderate spatial resolution burned area mapping. This study examines the performance of the Sentinel-2A Multi Spectral Instrument (MSI) bands and derived spectral indices to differentiate between unburned and burned areas. For this purpose, five pairs of pre-fire and post-fire top of atmosphere (TOA reflectance) and atmospherically corrected (surface reflectance) images were studied. The pixel values of locations that were unburned in …

Developing Nations And Disadvantaged Populations: How The 2009 H1n1 Influenza Pandemic Exacerbated Disparities And Inequities, Rebecca Lebeaux

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, although not as deadly or long lasting as initially projected, demonstrated that the world was and is ill prepared to handle a mass pandemic. As the first pandemic of the twenty-first century, the pandemic revealed global health insecurities and asymmetrical disease burdens for disadvantaged individuals and countries. This paper will analyze why both developing countries and disadvantaged individuals suffered disproportionately from the pandemic. Using the framework of structural violence, this paper will investigate how socioeconomic and political disparities encountered before and during the pandemic caused differential health, societal, political, and economic outcomes. These preexisting disparities …
