Setting The Irish State Table, Elaine Mahon

Articles

This year Ireland celebrates the centenary of the Easter rebellion of 1916, the event which is generally regarded as having led to Ireland’s independence six years later. Drawing on Irish government archives, this paper presents the beginnings of Irish state hospitality in the 1920s the emergence of diplomatic dining in the 1930s hosted by the Irish head of state and the first attempts to establish inventories of state owned furniture abroad. Checkout and electronic resource use data were compiled for the calendar year 2014. These data were used along with statistical testing to distinguish between groups and determine how well the library collection was serving both historically underserved and nonminority populations. The results indicate that minority groups are served as well as, if not better than, the control groups.

Natural Resource Governance, Development And Political Stability In The Great Lakes Region: Case Study Of The Oil Sector In Uganda, Jacqueline Nakaiza

Young African Leaders Journal of Development

Discovery of significant oil resources in Uganda has been met with both optimism and skepticism. In as much as the country’s government argues that the discovery and exploitation of the oil will be a boost to the country’s development process, scholars, members of the political opposition and sections of the civil society contend that there is reason to fear for a possible oil resource curse. It is against this background that this study was undertaken; to scrutinize the content, process and implementation of the policies relating to exploitation of the oil and to determine whether these policies guarantee that the …

Demographic And Economic Characteristics Of Immigrant And Native-Born Populations In Rural And Urban Places, Andrew P. Schaefer, Marybeth J. Mattingly

Carsey Publications

In this brief authors Andrew Schaefer and Marybeth Mattingly use American Community Survey five-year estimates to document demographic and economic characteristics of the immigrant and native-born populations in the United States by metropolitan status. They focus on a wide range of demographic and economic indicators that relate to immigrants’ ability to assimilate and thrive in rural America. They report that compared to the native-born rural population, rural immigrants are more likely to be of working age (18–64), are more racially and ethnically diverse, are less educated, and are more likely to have children. Working rural immigrants are nearly twice as …

Nsf Data Management Requirements 101, Jeffrey M. Mortimore

University Libraries: Faculty Presentations

As federal funding requirements continue to evolve and more publishers are requiring open data sharing as a condition of publication, academic libraries have an important role to play supporting campus researchers’ data management needs. During this session, we will explore in detail the National Science Foundation’s current data management requirements, giving special attention to data planning as part of the NSF’s grant application process. In so doing, we will discuss basic tools and levels of service for supporting campus researchers throughout the data life cycle.

Well, That Took A While: An Anecdotal Comparison Of The Job Application Process Between Public And Academic Libraries, Jessica Garner Oct 2016

Well, That Took A While: An Anecdotal Comparison Of The Job Application Process Between Public And Academic Libraries, Jessica Garner

University Libraries: Faculty Presentations

When a position for Interlibrary Loan Librarian came open at Georgia Southern University in the latter part of 2015, I was intrigued. Although ensconced happily in a public library position and a 10-year veteran of public systems, the lure of an academic position-along with logistical considerations-prompted me to apply for the position. I believe my observations about the hiring, though anecdotal, begin to unravel a conversation comparing and contrasting academic libraries with public libraries, possibly to the benefit of both institutions.

A Bird In The Hand: Leveraging Ill Requests To Improve Electronic Resource Access, Jeffrey M. Mortimore, Jessica Garner, Jermaine L. Bryant, Jessica Williams

University Libraries: Faculty Presentations

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests reveal a lot about our collections, from development needs to access issues. This session focuses on how ILL and Technical Services personnel at Georgia Southern University are using ILL request information to troubleshoot and improve electronic resource access across our collections. We will explore the kinds of access issues ILL lending and borrowing requests reveal, discuss strategies for issue reporting and feedback, and consider the benefits of leveraging ILL requests to identify, mediate, and resolve access issues, sometimes before they ever crop up at the reference desk. Additionally, we look forward to hearing about what strategies …

Simple Springshare Mashups: Cross-Platform Strategies For Repurposing Digital Content For Multiple Audiences, Ruth L. Baker, Jeffrey M. Mortimore

University Libraries: Faculty Presentations

During this session, presenters will offer simple strategies for content creation and management that maximize opportunities for repurposing content across delivery platforms while keeping maintenance to a minimum. First, we will consider strategies for content creation-including naming, description, and chunking-that support repurposing of content for multiple audiences and support contexts. Second, we will look at strategies for dynamically mapping content across platforms that eliminates any need to monitor platform content separately. While this session will focus on LibGuides and LibAnswers, the content creation techniques we discuss are applicable to any content management system that supports dynamic content mapping and/or external …

Brave New World: Observations During The Early Transition Between Public And Academic Librarians, Jessica Garner Oct 2016

Brave New World: Observations During The Early Transition Between Public And Academic Librarians, Jessica Garner

University Libraries: Faculty Presentations

After a decade in public libraries, a move to the world of academic libraries is exciting, new and-sometimes-an exercise in learning how to see the world one is accustomed to as if it were suddenly turned slightly sideways. This discussion address the little differences a newcomer to academic libraries sees in the first months of an academic career and asks the audience to think about little details of their everyday business that may not be as little as they believe.

Clinicians' Observations Of Family Interactions In The Reunification Process: The Parent Child Checklist, Becci A. Akin, Melanie M. Domenech-Rodriguez, Yueqi Yan, David S. Degarmo, Thomas P. Mcdonald, Marion S. Forgatch

Psychology Faculty Publications

The present article employed a sample of 365 families of children in foster care to conduct a validation test of a newly developed instrument, the Parent Child Checklist (PCC). The PCC is a 54-item direct observation measure assessing parent–child interactions in the context of a family session. The PCC was developed to support the effective implementation of an evidence-based intervention, Parent Management Training-Oregon model, in the Kansas child welfare system. The PCC was designed to capture two scales of child behavior (prosocial and problem behavior) and five parenting domains (encouragement, positive involvement, problem solving, communication skill, and effective discipline). A …

Support And Negation Of Colorectal Cancer Risk Prevention Behaviors: Analysis Of Spousal Discussions, Wendy C. Birmingham, Maija Reblin, Wendy Kohlmann, Tyler Graff

Faculty Publications

The shared social context created in a marriage may be important in motivating engagement in health behaviors, but spousal influence may not be uniformly applied. Our goal was to examine how spouses discuss health behaviors relevant for colorectal cancer (CRC) riskreduction to better understand how spouses exert or fail to exert influence. In this pilot study, first degree relatives of CRC patients and their spouses completed demographic and self-reported health questionnaires. After a genetic counseling session regarding risk and risk reduction, couples engaged in a semi-structured discussion task to discuss lifestyle choices they currently undertake or could undertake to reduce …

Insects: Still Looking Like Zombies, Christopher S. Hill Oct 2016

Insects: Still Looking Like Zombies, Christopher S. Hill

Animal Sentience

In arguing that insect brains are capable of sentience, Klein & Barron rely heavily on Bjorn Merker’s claim that activity in the human mid-brain is sufficient for conscious experience. I criticize Merker’s claim by pointing out that the behaviors supported by midbrain activity are much more primitive than the ones that appear to depend on consciousness. I raise a similar objection to Klein & Barron’s contention that insect behaviors are similar to behaviors that manifest consciousness in human beings. The similarity is weak. I also respond to the related view that integrative activity in mid-brain structures is sufficient to explain …
