The State Of African Economy And A Way Forward, Florian Cyril Mshanga
The State Of African Economy And A Way Forward, Florian Cyril Mshanga
Young African Leaders Journal of Development
The current emerging market downturn in economic powerhouses like China, has already negatively affected African economic growth. For resource-rich countries, it is a chance to improve their public investment management (PIM) system, which could help boost growth; although from experience drawn, Sub-Saharan oil resourced countries on average score lower in PIM, reflecting weak administrative capacity and low transparency in the use of public resources, especially at the project appraisal and evaluation stages of the PIM process. Countries that have successfully diversified their economies will suffer less than those that have not and they will enjoy less stress than countries depending …

Most U.S. School Districts Have Low Access To School Counselors: Poor, Diverse, And City School Districts Exhibit Particularly High Student-To-Counselor Ratios, Douglas J. Gagnon, Marybeth J. Mattingly
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Douglas Gagnon and Marybeth Mattingly examine access to school counselors in public school districts, as well as how this access is mediated by district demographic and location characteristics. They use a large nationally representative data source compiled from the 2013–2014 Civil Rights Data Collection, the 2014 Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates, and 2007 urban centric locales made available by the U.S. Census Bureau to conduct their analyses. The authors report that only 17.8 percent of school districts meet the American School Counselor Association’s recommended student-to-school counselor ratio of 250:1 or lower. The median ratio is …

Within libraryland social media this past spring and summer, an emerging story began to unfold. A relatively new upstart company, Reveal Digital has begun developing digital archives of primary resources which are funded by institutions pledging upfront support. The eventual result of this work will be collections made available as Open Access content to everyone. The majority of the content is being sourced from research libraries’ archival collections. Those pledging money get early access to the content as it is being digitized and made available. In addition, source libraries obtain digital copies that they can dark archive. Pledging libraries also …

Becoming And Being A Student: A Heideggerian Analysis Of Physiotherapy Students’ Experiences, Claire Hamshire, Kirsten Jack
The Qualitative Report
This three-year, longitudinal, narrative study sought to explore physiotherapy students’ stories of their undergraduate experiences to gain an insight into the process of being a student, with an interpretation of the philosophy of Heidegger as a possible horizon for understanding. The central aim was to listen to students’ stories told in their own words over a series of narrative interviews throughout their degree programme. The first author [CH] interviewed six students a minimum of five occasions and at each interview they were encouraged with a narrative prompt to tell the stories of their experiences as a series of episodes beginning …

Development Of The Idaho Statewide Travel Demand Model Trip Matrices Using Cell Phone Od Data And Origin Destination Matrix Estimation, Ben Stabler
PSU Transportation Seminars
As part of the initial phase of development for the Idaho Statewide Travel Demand Model, Parsons Brinckerhoff developed a base year auto and truck trip matrix using AirSage cell phone OD data, a statewide network in Cube, traffic counts, and origin-destination matrix estimation (ODME) procedures. To begin, the 4000+ statewide zone system was aggregated into a 700 super zone system for collecting the cell phone OD data. Next, the cell phone data was collected for the month of September 2013 for the following market segments: Average weekday resident HBW, HBO, NHB, and visitor NHB trips. The cell phone trips were …

Let’S Stop Calling This A Crisis And Start Building More Homes, Lorcan Sirr
Let’S Stop Calling This A Crisis And Start Building More Homes, Lorcan Sirr
Media
Over the past couple of years I have made a concerted effort not to use the phrase “housing crisis”, and I’ve been doing quite well, too. Recently, however, I have been using the dreaded phrase more often than I like. I don’t like the word “crisis” because it often gets abused, and although I’m talking about housing here, the same point can be applied to many economic and social problems and solutions.
The Impact Of Oil Price On Ghana's Inflation, Albert Mcbell Ninepence
The Impact Of Oil Price On Ghana's Inflation, Albert Mcbell Ninepence
Young African Leaders Journal of Development
World oil price is a momentous determinant of global economic performance. In most cases, when oil prices skyrockets, it leads to a transfer of income from importing countries to exporting countries through trade shifts. The link between oil and inflation is mostly seen as being correlational. The direct relationship between oil and inflation was evident in the 1970’s nevertheless this relationship started to deteriorate after the 1980’s. Quite a cornucopia of researchers have made relentless inquiry on the macroeconomics impact of world oil price shocks and hikes on economic growth and consumer price inflation on importing countries. Also, an infinitesimal …
Leader Behavior And Follower Work Behavior: The Influence Of Follower Characteristics, C. Allen Gorman, Jason Gamble
Leader Behavior And Follower Work Behavior: The Influence Of Follower Characteristics, C. Allen Gorman, Jason Gamble
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
Research on leadership and subsequent follower outcomes has remained a prominent topic of study in the organizational sciences. Unfortunately, the leadership literature has neglected the role of follower characteristics as potential influences on the relationship between leader behavior and follower work behavior. In this session, we will review the literature on follower individual differences as they relate to leader effectiveness. We will also report the results of 2 studies that we conducted to further examine this issue. In the first study, we found that follower promotion focus mediated the relationship between transformational leadership and follower organizational citizenship behavior. In the …

In today’s global business environment, it is important – now more than ever - that leaders are equipped with the necessary skills to empower and inspire employees to deliver results to customers in an uncertain world. Leadership development has become critical toward ensuring that leaders have the support and the opportunity to explore their leadership style and learn how to effectively lead others. This session examines leadership development in the modern age and provides examples of what companies like General Electric (GE) are doing to develop leaders who can operate within a global economy, lead employees through times of extreme …
Your Attention Please! Careless Responding As A Threat To Data Quality, Nathan Bowling
Your Attention Please! Careless Responding As A Threat To Data Quality, Nathan Bowling
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
When I/O psychologists collect self-report data, they hope that every participant will carefully reflect on every questionnaire item. Unfortunately, this is not always the case: Datasets often include some participants who have responded carelessly to part—or all—of the study questionnaire (Meade & Craig, 2012). In this presentation I will discuss the detection and prevention of careless responding and I will identify the conditions that are most likely to produce careless responding. The following subsections provide an overview of my presentation. Careless responding occurs when research participants provide inaccurate data because they have failed to carefully read or comply with questionnaire …

Making Scholarly Activity Available To The Masses: The Scaffolding Of Scholarship Throughout The Undergraduate Curriculum, Michael Savarese, Trent R. Brown, Carolyn Culbertson, Anna Carlin
Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research
Florida Gulf Coast University’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) focuses on improving student critical thinking, information literacy, and written communication. Rather than developing these skills through traditional methods (e.g., through senior-level, independent research), these learning outcomes are practiced through scholarly experiences. Traditional undergraduate scholarship manifests itself through terminal, senior capstone or research experiences. These, because of the economy of scale, typically reach a minority of students, often just honors students or those approached by faculty mentors. At FGCU, however, scholarly experiences are a part of the curriculum throughout the program of study, and scaffolded to build greater depth and sophistication. Presented …
