Eastern Illinois University is a community enthusiastically engaged in intellectual exploration. This includes faculty testing the boundaries of knowledge within their disciplines and the boundaries of how to convey that knowledge to their students. It also includes students, both graduate students joining with their faculty mentors in pressing the disciplinary boundaries, and undergraduate students discovering the front edges of the disciplines under the guidance of their instructors. Today we celebrate the full range of such faculty contributions: journal articles, book chapters, monographs, art works, music compositions, performances in all forms, and a host of others. Funded research contributions also are …

Finding The Public Domain: The Copyright Review Management System, Melissa Levine
Finding The Public Domain: The Copyright Review Management System, Melissa Levine
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Historically, copyright review has been uncoordinated and has taken place on a modest scale. The Copyright Review Management System (CRMS) changes that. 1 CRMS was supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services over three National Leadership Grants. It was led by the University of Michigan in collaboration with 19 other highly dedicated research libraries. Together, we developed a system to train and coordinate reviewers to assess the copyright status of digitized books held in the HathiTrust Digital Library. Over the course of the three interrelated grants that make up the CRMS project, we developed expertise in managing a …
Webinar: Transit Signal Priority Evaluation And Performance Measures, Miguel Figliozzi
Webinar: Transit Signal Priority Evaluation And Performance Measures, Miguel Figliozzi
TREC Webinar Series
Transit signal priority (TSP) can reduce transit delay at signalized intersections by making phasing adjustments. TSP is a relatively inexpensive tool to provide faster and more reliable transit service. This webinar addresses TSP real-word performance measures as well as data integration and evaluation challenges. Results of the TSP evaluation in an arterial corridor in Portland, Oregon indicate that a timely and effective TSP system requires a high degree of sophistication, monitoring, and maintenance. TSP timing is crucial to reduce transit delay.
Key takeaways include: performance measures, methodology, analysis of early green and red extension pros and cons, novel real-world results.

The Roles Of Knowledge Assets In Promoting Firm Productivity And Innovation In China, Jingsi Yang
The Roles Of Knowledge Assets In Promoting Firm Productivity And Innovation In China, Jingsi Yang
Lingnan Theses
This paper investigates how intangible knowledge assets impact upon the firm’s products and the output of new products through a large panel data set covering all manufacturing firms from the period of 1998-2007. We hypothesize that more knowledge assets have a positive impact on total factor productivity and the ratio of new products to total products, but only up to a point, due to the importance of complementary assets. The inverse quadratic relationship found in the relationship between the ratio of knowledge assets to total assets and TFP suggests that it is necessary to balance knowledge assets with complementary assets …

Modern Muslims : A Sudan Memoir, Steve Howard
Modern Muslims : A Sudan Memoir, Steve Howard
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Steve Howard departed for the Sudan in the early 1980s as an American graduate student beginning a three-year journey in which he would join and live with the Republican Brotherhood, the Sufi Muslim group led by the visionary Mahmoud Mohamed Taha. Taha was a religious intellectual who participated in the early days of Sudan’s anticolonial struggle, but quickly turned his movement into a religious reform effort based on his radical reading of the Qur’an. He was executed in 1985 for apostasy.
Decades after returning to the life of an academic in the United States, Howard brings us this memoir of …

Understanding Coastal Tourists' Behavioral Intentions Toward Nature-Based Experiences, Lauren Jackowitz, Pavlina Latkova, Patrick Tierney, Judi Strebel
Journal of Tourism Insights
Ecotourism is a viable alternative to mass tourism in promoting a sustainable tourism industry. Ecotourism evolved from tourism providers who began to focus their services on educating tourists about the natural environmental and promoting conservation efforts. Past studies have shown that ecotourism programs have the ability to change tourists’ environmental attitudes and behaviors. Prior research has investigated that interpretation in the form of educating tourists about the natural environment through hands on experiences can result in a deeper appreciation for nature. However, research has yet to examine environmental attitudes and behaviors of tourists from a gender perspective and more research …

Respondent Rated Importance Versus Calculated Significance: Which Is More Valid?, Asli D.A. Tasci
Journal of Tourism Insights
Importance rating scales are utilized to define the importance of factors for certain behavior of different study populations including consumers. However, the findings on important factors are usually not checked for validity by comparing with different methods. The current study compares a direct measure with an indirect measure: 1) respondents’ importance ratings of consumer based brand equity (CBBE) components on their choosing a destination for their next vacation (an indicator of loyalty); 2) calculated significance of the same CBBE components on affecting their likelihood to visit a destination (an indicator of loyalty). Results show that the direct measures, or respondents’ …
Applying The Holistic Conceptual Conservation Framework For Sustainable Tourism, George Alexakis, Larry Rice
Applying The Holistic Conceptual Conservation Framework For Sustainable Tourism, George Alexakis, Larry Rice
Journal of Tourism Insights
The tourism and hospitality industry has not always followed sound environmental stewardship. Increased awareness among tourists worldwide has prompted sustainability discourse encouraging long-term systemic approaches to planning and development. The research article proposes a holistic conceptual conservation framework that shows how a united tourism and hospitality industry can curtail the processes of environmental destruction and collectively offer authentic touristic experiences. Visitors can fully experience tourist destinations through integrated ecotourism, ethnotourism, and other related tangential offerings alongside those of larger tourism and hospitality providers. The conservation framework hypothetically strengthens the customer loyalty of tourists towards all industry operators and related practitioners, …

It has become increasingly more difficult to encounter news of today’s events and not become aware of the people who are suffering behind the scenes unfolding on our television sets, radio newscasts, screens and newspapers. Due to the multitude of media reports, we are more aware of what is happening in the remote corners of our world than we were only a few years ago. This awareness includes the fates of the people suffering from displacement due to conflict and violence. This paper seeks to explore available professional literature and present an exploratory study of the issues faced by today’s …

Creativity And Cognitive Skills Among Millennials: Thinking Too Much And Creating Too Little, Brice Corgnet, Antonio M. Espín, Roberto Hernán-González
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
Organizations crucially need the creative talent of millennials but are reluctant to hire them because of their supposed lack of diligence. Recent studies have shown that hiring diligent millennials requires selecting those who score high on the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT) and thus rely on effortful thinking rather than intuition. A central question is to assess whether the push for recruiting diligent millennials using criteria such as cognitive reflection can ultimately hamper the recruitment of creative workers. To answer this question, we study the relationship between millennials' creativity and their performance on fluid intelligence (Raven) and cognitive reflection (CRT) tests. …

Hiv And Aging: Global Implications For Social Care Of A Vulnerable Population, Mark Brennan-Ing
Hiv And Aging: Global Implications For Social Care Of A Vulnerable Population, Mark Brennan-Ing
Aging Studies Institute
In the early 1980s when Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the cause Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), was first identified, life expectancy following diagnosis was approximately two years (Halkitis, 2013). With the advent of highly-active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in the mid-1990s, life expectancy for people with HIV (PWH) increased sharply. PWH receiving HAART treatment shortly after diagnosis can now expect to live as long as uninfected individuals (van Sighem, Gras, Reiss, Brinkman, & de Wolf, 2010). As a result the population with HIV is aging. It is estimated that in 2015, 50% of PWH in the U.S. were age 50 and …
