Promoting Progress To Assist Youth With Disordered Eating In School Mental Health, Bryn Elizabeth Schiele Jan 2016

Promoting Progress To Assist Youth With Disordered Eating In School Mental Health, Bryn Elizabeth Schiele

Theses and Dissertations

Disordered eating has become a significant issue among children and adolescents; nearly 14% of all youth displaying disordered eating patterns. Despite the prevalence of these disorders amongst school-age students, there is a deficit of empirical literature on the integration of eating disorder support services in schools, as well as a lack of knowledge and training of school mental health (SMH) professionals regarding the appropriate interventions for this population. While eating disorders have previously been considered as outside of the school mental health domain of practice (e.g., Judge, 2001), this view has changed and there exists a significant need to provide …

Managing Risks Of Market Price Uncertainty For A Microgrid Operation, Sriram Raghavan Jan 2016

Managing Risks Of Market Price Uncertainty For A Microgrid Operation, Sriram Raghavan

Masters Theses

"After deregulation of electricity in the United States, the day-ahead and real-time markets allow load serving entities and generation companies to bid and purchase/sell energy under the supervision of the independent system operator (ISO). The electricity market prices are inherently uncertain, and can be highly volatile. The main objective of this thesis is to hedge against the risk from the uncertainty of the market prices when purchasing/selling energy from/to the market. The energy manager can also schedule distributed generators (DGs) and storage of the microgrid to meet the demand, in addition to energy transactions from the market. The risk measure …

Intended Continued Use Social Networking Sites: Effects On Job Satisfaction And Performance, Ned Kock, Murad Moqbel, Kevin Barton, Valerie L. Bartelt Jan 2016

Intended Continued Use Social Networking Sites: Effects On Job Satisfaction And Performance, Ned Kock, Murad Moqbel, Kevin Barton, Valerie L. Bartelt

Information Systems Faculty Publications

Hedonic information systems are those that are used primarily for pleasure. Previous research has established that the intention to use hedonic information systems is explained mainly by perceived ease of use and perceived enjoyment, with perceived usefulness to one’s job being given less importance. Facebook could be seen as a hedonic information system. This paper employs a cross-sectional survey of 178 professionals who used Facebook to various degrees. Predictably, the authors’ empirical results show that perceived enjoyment is indeed a much stronger determinant of intended continued Facebook use than ease of use or usefulness to one’s job, explaining a considerable …

Spatio-Temporal Modeling Of Louisiana Land Subsidence Using High Resolution Geo-Spatial Data, Hanyu Xiang Jan 2016

Spatio-Temporal Modeling Of Louisiana Land Subsidence Using High Resolution Geo-Spatial Data, Hanyu Xiang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Problems caused by subsidence are very common in many areas of the world, and this kind of problems may be serious and threatening to living people in Louisiana. Adverse subsidence in Louisiana will cause serious problems, such as excessive wetland formation or land loss, if we can’t make appropriate treatments, and this topic will also be what we focus on in this research (Kent and Dokka 2012). For subsidence survey, we can use three kinds of common techniques, leveling, InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) and GPS observation (Lu, C. et al. 2012). In this research, high accuracy of subsidence data …

The Moderating Effects Of Positive And Negative Automatic Thoughts On The Relationship Between Positive Emotions And Resilience, Michael W. Judd Jan 2016

The Moderating Effects Of Positive And Negative Automatic Thoughts On The Relationship Between Positive Emotions And Resilience, Michael W. Judd

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Resilience is generally characterized as the ability to recover and grow following adversity (Connor & Davidson, 2003) and is considered an integral factor in the promotion of overall physical and psychological health (Masten & Reed, 2002). One factor thought to be associated with resilience is more frequent positive emotions, but the relationship between positive emotions and resilience varies (Tugade, Fredrickson, & Feldman-Barrett, 2004), suggesting moderating factors may be involved. Cognitive factors may be involved in determining the parameters that define when and to what degree this relationship occurs (Troy & Mauss, 2011). The current study was designed to further elucidate …

The Impact Of Empathy Training On Perceptions Of Substance Use Disorders, Kelsea Magel Jan 2016

The Impact Of Empathy Training On Perceptions Of Substance Use Disorders, Kelsea Magel

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Negative attitudes and stigma toward individuals with mental health disorders, particularly substance use disorders, undoubtedly exist in communities around the globe. Lund and Boggero (2014) propose that negative attitudes toward mental health disorders have existed throughout history and across cultures, and there is an ongoing concern of how individuals with mental illness are affected by these negative attitudes (Poreddi, Thimmaiah, Pashupu, Ramachandra, & Badamath, 2014). Increasing levels of empathy in individuals has shown to decrease overall magnitude of negative attitudes; most empathy training tasks, however, are extensive and last several months. The current study examined the possibility of reducing negative …

Guns, Gender, Geography: Exploring Reasons For Gun Ownership, Lauren N. Kadet Jan 2016

Guns, Gender, Geography: Exploring Reasons For Gun Ownership, Lauren N. Kadet

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study was aimed to depict patterns of gun ownership in the United States and to outline the reasons for gun ownership and the influential variables associated with people’s reasons for owning handguns and long guns. This study used data derived from the 2004 National Firearm Survey to examine how respondents’ geographic region of residency, gender, race, age, rural location and education level influenced the likelihood of, and reasons for owning a firearm. The findings from this study suggest that being a male, living in the south and participants’ age was significant in determining the likelihood of participants owning a …

Law Enforcements’ Perceptions And Preparedness To Address Child Exploitation Via Hacking, Jack W. Lightfoot Jan 2016

Law Enforcements’ Perceptions And Preparedness To Address Child Exploitation Via Hacking, Jack W. Lightfoot

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Throughout recorded history, children have been subjected to sexual exploitation. Child predators and pedophiles often take great risk and go to extreme lengths to sexually exploit a child. With technological advancements many individuals became globalized and connected with the invention of the computer, the internet and its attributes. However, child predators quickly took note of the vulnerability of children as they begin to groom them online. The problem quickly evolved as the Deep (Dark) Web and encryption were created. This put great stress upon law enforcement entities as locating and combating these predators became exhausting tasks. It’s most often that …

Assessing The Feasibility Of The Employer As A Health Advisor For Type 2 Diabetes Prevention, Siddhartha Roy Jan 2016

Assessing The Feasibility Of The Employer As A Health Advisor For Type 2 Diabetes Prevention, Siddhartha Roy

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Type 2 diabetes has become a serious issue affecting millions of Americans, especially in the southern United States. Georgia is one southern state where diabetes rates are high. Diabetes is exacerbated in rural areas where many communities are medically underserved. Therefore, diabetes prevention interventions that target rural communities in the South are needed to address this issue. Traditional methods of addressing diabetes in the South have not been effective. Innovative methods, such as worksite prevention programs, must be developed to combat the problem. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of the employer as a health advisor …

Perfectionism And Eating Disordered Psychopathology: Examination Through A Stress Generation Perspective, Sarah A. Mello Jan 2016

Perfectionism And Eating Disordered Psychopathology: Examination Through A Stress Generation Perspective, Sarah A. Mello

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Current research on eating disorders identifies a close correlation with perfectionism. However, little is understood about the complexities of this relationship, and some studies have demonstrated a stronger relationship between these variables when compared to others. This research sought to investigate the role of stress, in particular adverse life events, as a mediator in order to more robustly explain the relationship between eating disorder features and self-evaluative perfectionism, a higher order component of perfectionism consisting of concern over mistakes, need for approval, rumination, and perceived parental pressure. Three hundred and five college women volunteered to complete a series of self-report …

Intersectional Examination Of Individuation And Emotional Intelligence: Longitudinal Associations With Positive Psychology And Multicultural Psychology, Laura E. Miller Jan 2016

Intersectional Examination Of Individuation And Emotional Intelligence: Longitudinal Associations With Positive Psychology And Multicultural Psychology, Laura E. Miller

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Emerging adulthood is a unique transitional period that has only recently been introduced into the literature (Arnett & Taber, 1994). Gaps exist in explicating underlying concepts of positive development in this developmental period. Individuation and emotional intelligence have been identified as crucial developmental tasks for emerging adults (Lapsley & Edgerton, 2002; Fernandez, Salamonson, & Griffiths, 2012). Positive psychology and multicultural psychology theories provide insights into how these components may be promoted over time. The purpose of the study was to identify promotional factors to healthy development outcomes in sample of ethnically diverse emerging adults. Participants in the study included 293 …

Examining Cognitive Vulnerability Models To Borderline Personality Features In A Sample Of Emerging Adults, Danielle E. Seal Jan 2016

Examining Cognitive Vulnerability Models To Borderline Personality Features In A Sample Of Emerging Adults, Danielle E. Seal

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a chronic condition that warrants further empirical investigation. Considering the potentially lethal consequences and therapeutic challenges associated with features of BPD, it is important for researchers to explore pathways that will advance theory, assessment, and interventions that target BPD symptoms. One interactive theory that may predict variation in BPD symptoms is the cognitive-vulnerability model. Examining the cognitive vulnerability model in the context of BPD symptoms is the overall goal of the dissertation project. Specifically, the current study examined the mediator effects of maladaptive schemas on the adverse event-BPD symptom relationship. Four hundred and fifteen undergraduate …

The Influence Of Normative Feedback And Expectancy Violation On Attitudes Related To Sexual Assault, Stephanie Chastang Jan 2016

The Influence Of Normative Feedback And Expectancy Violation On Attitudes Related To Sexual Assault, Stephanie Chastang

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Sexual assault is a complex problem, and there is no set of best practices for sexual assault prevention and education programs. Social norms marketing and expectancy violations, however, have been proposed to be influential factors that may aid in increasing prosocial attitudes related to sexual assault. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential effect of social norm feedback and expectancy violations on attitudes related to sexual assault and bystander intervention. Participants in the study included 244 undergraduate and graduate students who completed an experiment embedded in an online survey. Results indicated that there were no significant …

Gramsci's Civil Society In A Nutshell, ธีรพัฒน์ อังศุชวาล Jan 2016

Gramsci's Civil Society In A Nutshell, ธีรพัฒน์ อังศุชวาล

Journal of Social Sciences

In civil society studies, Antonio Gramsci, an Italian Marxist theoretician and politician, is regarded as a major thinker, if not, a hero, who reversely developed Hegel's ideas of the state and society. In particular, it is the notion of civil society which significantly distinguishes Gramsci from Hegel and Marx, not the notion of the state. Gramsci principally differentiated 'civil society' form 'political society'. He seemingly rejected the clear differentiation drawn in mainstream liberal theory between the state and civil society; instead, he said that civil society and state are one and the same. For Gramsci, 'State' is a sum of …

Which "Regionalism" For Southeast Asia? - Curating Art In Time Of Globalisation And Neoliberalism, รัฐศรัณย์ สิรีกัญจน์

Journal of Social Sciences

This paper looks into different conceptualisations of "regionalism" in Southeast Asia as put forward by selected art exhibitions on the theme. It explores how these exhibitions engage in knowledge production constructing different versions of "regionalism" for the public. The paper asks if Iola Lenzi's curation of Concept Context Contestation—though politically committed, based on the nation-state paradigm—is the answer for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) whose ontology pivots on transnationality. The paper, then, engages the exhibition Missing Links by Gridthiya Gaweewong to demonstrate that her taking on 'regionalism' drew on transnationality. However, in leftist terms, transnationality is not without a problem. …

Group Empathy As A Driver Of Pro-Lgbtq+ Attitudes In The United States, José Villalobos, Cigdem Sirin

Departmental Papers (PS)

The LGBTQ+ community in the U.S. has long suffered from collective stigmatization and discrimination. At the same time, there have been calls for increased social acceptance, more legal protections, and better political representation of LGBTQ+ people. An essential ingredient for such calls for change has been a rise in support from outgroup allies. However, what moves members of the public to support LGBTQ+ citizens? In this chapter, we explore how group empathy as a general disposition may serve as a primary driver of positive attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community. Employing 2020 American National Election Studies (ANES) data, we find individuals …

Are High-Poverty School Districts Disproportionately Impacted By State Funding Cuts? School Finance Equity Following The Great Recession, David S. Knight

Working Papers

The Great Recession caused states around the country to make substantial budget cuts to public education. As a result, districts that rely more heavily on state funding – those with greater concentrations of students in poverty – may be disproportionately impacted by the Great Recession funding cuts; however, little prior research examines this issue. This study examines how state school finance systems responded to recessionary funding cuts on average nationally. The study then draws on state specific data to examine local district taxation patterns in response to state spending cuts. The study finds that (a) on average across states, high-poverty …

The Impact Of Urban Sprawl On Journey To Work Times For Mass Transit And All Other Commuters In The United States: A Research Note, Thomas E. Lambert, Hokey Min, Kyle Dorriere

Journal of Transportation Management

As government budgets get tighter, there has been considerable public outcry about the continued investment in public mass transit systems and their financial viability. Amid this outcry, a number of studies have been conducted to determine which factors influence the use and efficiency of publiclyfunded mass transit systems. These factors include population density and less sprawl (or greater urban compactness). However, their impact on mass transit usage is somewhat contradictory in that the heavy concentration of populations in the urban area and greater compactness is believed to increase mass transit usage due to a bigger number of potential passengers. In …
