Stealing The Mic: Struggles Of The Black Female Voice In Rap, Miranda Flores Jan 2016

Stealing The Mic: Struggles Of The Black Female Voice In Rap, Miranda Flores

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Black women are objects and agents of pop culture that are rarely given a voice in a cacophony of heteronormative white noise. To navigate a male dominated industry, black female artists reappropriate black masculinity which, in turn is misappropriated by white female artists. This cultural appropriation is explored in a rhetorical analysis of the controversy between artists Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, and Miley Cyrus. The struggle of black female rappers to succeed against the stereotypes proffered by male rappers and profited on by white pop artists demonstrates the detrimental effects of post racial America on black female identity at a …

The Impact Of Mindfulness Meditation On Students' Creativity, Paige Poure Jan 2016

The Impact Of Mindfulness Meditation On Students' Creativity, Paige Poure

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Researchers have suggested a link between mindfulness meditation and increased creativity. Specifically, meditation seems to promote improved divergent thinking (Colzato et al., 2012). I sought to better understand mindfulness meditation and creativity by addressing the differential effects of brief meditation on divergent and convergent thinking, as well as investigating decreased anxiety and increased executive control as potential mechanistic mediators of this relationship. In a laboratory experiment 40 Butler University undergraduate students participated in either a sham or mindfulness meditation exercise, followed by several creativity assessments as well as measures of anxiety and executive control. The findings show that mindfulness meditation …

Effects Of Fiscal Policy On Consumer Confidence, Sara Omohundro Jan 2016

Effects Of Fiscal Policy On Consumer Confidence, Sara Omohundro

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

It has long been debated which type of fiscal policy is most effective in a recession, a tax cut or an increase in government spending. Throughout the history of the United States, many administrations have tried to implement various forms and combinations of tax cuts and spending hikes to jump start the economy. Some were effective, and some were not. By determining what it is that makes fiscal policy effective, the government can be better prepared and more informed when designing fiscal policy in the future. Consumer confidence is one relevant metric for this analysis because it is sensitive to …

It Takes A Village: Applying A Social Ecological Framework Of Resilience In Working With Lgbtq Youth, Kenta Asakura

School for Social Work: Faculty Publications

Hostile social environments can have detrimental impacts on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth. Considering the profession's commitment to social justice and person-in-environment perspectives, socia workers are well positioned to promote not only the internal capacity of LGBTQ youth but also the capacity of their social ecologies to better support them. This article suggests the relevance of a social ecological framework of resilience to social work practice with LGBTQ youth. Findings of the author's grounded theory study, along with other relevant literature, are used to specify elements in applying this framework to working with LGBTQ youth. A youth …

Derived Textual Control In Activity Schedules Using A Stimulus Pairing Observation Procedure, Grace Felling Jan 2016

Derived Textual Control In Activity Schedules Using A Stimulus Pairing Observation Procedure, Grace Felling

All Master's Theses

Activity schedules are commonly used with individuals with developmental disabilities. These schedules have been found to be highly beneficial because they help the learner complete activities independently without additional prompting and support of others. Two young adults diagnosed with Down syndrome, who used pictorial activity schedules, participated in the current study. This study examined an intervention, called stimulus pairing observation (SPO), for helping adults with Down syndrome transfer from use of a pictorial activity schedule to use of a textual activity schedule. Previous research on derived textual control has shown that matching-to-sample (MTS) can be an effective instructional procedure. The …

Contemplating Mindfulness At Work: An Integrative Review, Darren J. Good, Christopher Lyddy, Theresa M. Glomb, Joyce E. Bono, Kirk W. Brown, Michelle K. Duffy, Ruth A. Baer, Judson A. Brewer, Sara W. Lazar

School of Business Faculty Publications

Mindfulness research activity is surging within organizational science. Emerging evidence across multiple fields suggests that mindfulness is fundamentally connected to many aspects of workplace functioning, but this knowledge base has not been systematically integrated to date. This review coalesces the burgeoning body of mindfulness scholarship into a framework to guide mainstream management research investigating a broad range of constructs. The framework identifies how mindfulness influences attention, with downstream effects on functional domains of cognition, emotion, behavior, and physiology. Ultimately, these domains impact key workplace outcomes, including performance, relationships, and well-being. Consideration of the evidence on mindfulness at work stimulates important …

Self-Defense In The United States: A Review Of The Literature, Jake Shields Jan 2016

Self-Defense In The United States: A Review Of The Literature, Jake Shields

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This literature review examines self-defense as a general concept and in the context of specific legal doctrines. It looks at general issues of self-defense, such as philosophical principles, morality, and social norms; general guidelines of proportionality and force; and how non-lethal technology does not change these principles and guidelines. From there, the paper exams three major legal doctrines—Duty to Retreat, Castle Doctrine, and Stand Your Ground— and discusses their definitions, histories, legal significance, applied usages and specific study results, and the arguments and controversies surrounding them. The paper then analyzes the concept of self-defense through the theoretical perspective of Donald …

Relations Among Dimensions Of Emotion Regulation And Aggressive Behavior, Jessica M. Baker Jan 2016

Relations Among Dimensions Of Emotion Regulation And Aggressive Behavior, Jessica M. Baker

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In the absence of the ability to adaptively regulate one’s emotions, individuals may turn to impulsive and maladaptive methods of regulation, including engaging in aggressive behavior. Gratz and Roemer’s (2004) model of emotion regulation (Multidimensional assessment of emotion regulation and dysregulation: Development, factor structure, and initial validation of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale. Journal of Psychopathology and Behavioral Assessment, 26(1), 41-54) includes the dimensions of nonacceptance, difficulties engaging in goal-directed behavior, impulse control difficulties, lack of emotional awareness, access to emotion regulation strategies, and lack of emotional clarity. This study sought to identify the relations among these dimensions and …

The Double-Edged Sword Of Health Care Integration: Consolidation And Cost Control, Erin C. Fuse Brown, Jaime S. King Jan 2016

The Double-Edged Sword Of Health Care Integration: Consolidation And Cost Control, Erin C. Fuse Brown, Jaime S. King

Indiana Law Journal

The average family of four in the United States spends $25,826 per year on health care. American health care costs so much because we both overuse and overpay for health care goods and services. The Affordable Care Act’s cost control policies focus on curbing overutilization by encouraging health care providers to integrate to pro-mote efficiency and eliminate waste, but the cost control policies largely ignore prices. This article examines this overlooked half of health care cost control policy: rising prices and the policy levers held by the states to address them. We challenge the conventional wisdom that reducing overutilization through …

The Eighth Amendment’S Lost Jurors: Death Qualification And Evolving Standards Of Decency, Aliza Plener Cover Jan 2016

The Eighth Amendment’S Lost Jurors: Death Qualification And Evolving Standards Of Decency, Aliza Plener Cover

Indiana Law Journal

The Supreme Court’s inquiry into the constitutionality of the death penalty has over-looked a critical “objective indicator” of society’s “evolving standards of decency”: the rate at which citizens are excluded from capital jury service under Witherspoon v. Illinois due to their conscientious objections to the death penalty. While the Supreme Court considers the prevalence of death verdicts as a gauge of the nation’s moral climate, it has ignored how the process of death qualification shapes those verdicts. This blind spot biases the Court’s estimation of community norms and dis-torts its Eighth Amendment analysis.

This Article presents a quantitative study of …

Disability Rights And Labor: Is This Conflict Really Necessary?, Samuel R. Bagenstos Jan 2016

Disability Rights And Labor: Is This Conflict Really Necessary?, Samuel R. Bagenstos

Indiana Law Journal

In this Essay, I hope to do two things: First, I try to put the current labor-disability controversy into that broader context. Second, and perhaps more important, I take a position on how disability rights advocates should approach both the current contro-versy and labor-disability tensions more broadly. As to the narrow dispute over wage-and-hour protections for personal-assistance workers, I argue both that those workers have a compelling normative claim to full FLSA protection—a claim that disability rights advocates should recognize—and that supporting the claim of those workers is pragmatically in the best interests of the disability rights movement. As to …

Living With Owning, Matt Ampleman, Douglas A. Kysar Jan 2016

Living With Owning, Matt Ampleman, Douglas A. Kysar

Indiana Law Journal

In October, 2011, Terry Thompson committed suicide by gunshot after cutting open the cages of fifty-six exotic animals on his farm in Zanesville, Ohio. Fearing for pub-lic safety, law enforcement officers systematically hunted down the escaped animals in an episode that garnered international attention and prompted renewed discus-sion of the propriety of exotic animal ownership. This Article retells and discusses the circumstances surrounding Terry Thompson’s unhinging, applying frameworks of legal theory, chiefly in the realm of property law, to assess the fabric that held Thompson’s delicate system together and the tensions that led to its unravelling. As an autopsy, the …

Crossing The Troll Bridge - The Framing Of Fat Bodies On Social Media, Amanda Levitt Jan 2016

Crossing The Troll Bridge - The Framing Of Fat Bodies On Social Media, Amanda Levitt

Wayne State University Theses

As the use of social media grows, cyber bullying and trolling plague the way that people interact online. Even within spaces specifically dedicated to deconstructing dominant discourse around fatness, cyber bullying is an everyday occurrence. Data for this research came from a randomly selected sample of 500 messages sent to moderators of This is Thin Privilege, a Tumblr blog that explores and critiques the experiences of fat people in society. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on online communication by analyzing how commenters’ messages construct fatness and reify dominant narratives, the common tactics commenter’s use, and the …

Encountering The Real' : Jacques Lacan In Thailand Crackdowns, ชญาน์ทัต ศุภชลาศัย Jan 2016

Encountering The Real' : Jacques Lacan In Thailand Crackdowns, ชญาน์ทัต ศุภชลาศัย

Journal of Social Sciences

The article attempts to revisit the crackdowns in Thailand from a Lacanian perspective. The collective traumas of the Yellow-Shirts and the Red-Shirts are suggested as the Real, a psychoanalytic term conceptualized in Lacanian psychoanalysis. By examining the history of Thai politics during the pinnacle of the crackdown years, notably 2008 and 2010, the article attempts to introduce Lacan's theory to be integrative of the history of politics in Thailand. The expectation is to demonstrate how Lacan's concepts such as the signifier, the Real, the fantasy, and the object of desire are instrumental for the rethinking of the crackdowns in Thailand …

An Empirical Assessment Of Logistics/Supply Chain Management In Two Latin American Countries, John E. Spillan, Michael A. Mcginnis, Ali Kara, César Antúnez De Mayolo, Gustavo Jara Jan 2016

An Empirical Assessment Of Logistics/Supply Chain Management In Two Latin American Countries, John E. Spillan, Michael A. Mcginnis, Ali Kara, César Antúnez De Mayolo, Gustavo Jara

Journal of Transportation Management

The Bowersox Daugherty (1987) logistics strategy typology (Process Strategy, Market Strategy, and Information Strategy) is an important conceptual framework for studying logistics/supply chain management strategy and its role on logistics/supply chain management outcomes. The purpose of this research is to empirically apply the typology in Peru and compare the findings with the previous research conducted in Guatemala. The three Bowersox/Daugherty dimensions are used to define the construct Overall Logistic Strategy (OLS), and then, the OLS was used to measure Organizational Competitiveness (COMP) through two intervening variables LCE (Logistics Coordination Effectiveness) and CSC (Customer Service Commitment). The results indicate that generally …
