Anything Can Happen In The Zone: Library And Departmental Change Driven By Migration To A Cloud-Based Library Management System, Josh Petrusa Jan 2016

Anything Can Happen In The Zone: Library And Departmental Change Driven By Migration To A Cloud-Based Library Management System, Josh Petrusa

Scholarship and Professional Work

Butler University Libraries had already made progressive changes in public services areas, but Technical Services remained unchanged and bound to legacy practices from decades past. For us, the best catalyst for change was a system migration to a cloud-based type of management system. This system migration was tied to organizational restructuring and a new strategic plan, each of which intertwined with the details of the migration project and was underpinned by thoughtful analysis of how to help employees through change. Details of the migration are discussed in relation to how they inspired departmental and organizational change through updated technology.

Cultivating The Liberally Education Mind Through A Signature Program, Emily Chamlee-Wright, Joshua C. Hall, Laura E. Grube Jan 2016

Cultivating The Liberally Education Mind Through A Signature Program, Emily Chamlee-Wright, Joshua C. Hall, Laura E. Grube

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

In this paper we describe the Miller Upton Programs, launched by the Department of Economics at Beloit College in 2008. The Miller Upton Programs aim to advance student understanding of the nature and causes of wealth and well-being. After describing core elements of the program, we discuss the ways in which they leverage economic discourse as a means to advance liberal learning. We argue that programs of this kind advance liberal learning by cultivating the skills required to engage the great questions of human flourishing, by fostering the development of a students’ economic imagination, and by enhancing students’ ability to …

Regionalization And Consolidation Of Municipal Taxes And Services, Joshua Hall, Joshua Matti, Yang Zhou Jan 2016

Regionalization And Consolidation Of Municipal Taxes And Services, Joshua Hall, Joshua Matti, Yang Zhou

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

The United States has a rich history of local government taxation and good provision. The last fifty years, however, have seen increasing calls for the regionalization of municipal taxes and services from policymakers. Arguments for greater regionalization emphasize improved efficiency, enhanced equity, mitigation of spillovers, and improved economic development. A number of localist scholars have responded to regionalists’ concerns. This review articulates regionalists’ arguments, the localists’ response, and then summarizes the relevant empirical literature to see which side’s theories hold forth in the data.

When Party Does Not Matter: An Examination Of Conditions That Influence A Senator To Vote Against Party Leadership, Alexander Phillip Collins

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The United States Senate as the upper chamber of the United States Congress possesses great power and responsibility. The way that the 100 men and women who make up the chamber vote has long been of importance to those of us in the field of political science. This paper will look at influences that affect a senator’s decision to vote against leadership. The research will test these influences simultaneously in order to find the degrees of influence each has. The research will focus on the Senate from 1994 – 2008, when the Gingrich senators led to an increasingly polarized body …

Cross–Cultural Generalizability Of The Alternative Five–Factor Model Using The Zuckerman–Kuhlman–Aluja Personality Questionnaire, Jérôme Rossier, Anton Aluja, Angel Blanch, Barry Oumar, Adam W. Stivers

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Several personality models are known for being replicable across cultures, such as the Five–Factor Model (FFM) or Eysenck's Psychoticism–Extraversion–Neuroticism (PEN) model, and are for this reason considered universal. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the cross–cultural replicability of the recently revised Alternative FFM (AFFM). A total of 15 048 participants from 23 cultures completed the Zuckerman–Kuhlman–Aluja Personality Questionnaire (ZKA–PQ) aimed at assessing personality according to this revised AFFM. Internal consistencies, gender differences and correlations with age were similar across cultures for all five factors and facet scales. The AFFM structure was very similar across samples and can …

Sacred Women Of Africa And The African Diaspora: A Womanist Vision Of Black Women’S Bodies And The African Sacred Feminine, Arisika Razak Jan 2016

Sacred Women Of Africa And The African Diaspora: A Womanist Vision Of Black Women’S Bodies And The African Sacred Feminine, Arisika Razak

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Contemporary U.S. society is full of stereotypical images that marginalize and degrade Black women’s bodies (Bogle, 1994; Collins, 2000; Gilkes, 2001). However, many precolonial, spiritually based cultures of North and West Africa (Badejo, 1996; Gleason, 1987; Jell-Bahlsen, 2008) developed indigenous concepts of the African Sacred Feminine, a term I use to describe African representations of the feminine aspects of nature and divinity, as well as the innate, human and spiritual powers embodied by women. Using artistic depictions from ancient Algeria, dynastic Egypt, and West and Central Africa, this essay explores several iconographic traits of the African Sacred Feminine: nudity or …

“I Can’T Relate”: Refusing Identification Demands In Teaching And Learning, Ian Barnard Jan 2016

“I Can’T Relate”: Refusing Identification Demands In Teaching And Learning, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Articles and Research

In literature, composition, and other areas of English Studies, relateability can be an important tool to inscribe marginalized subjects as academic citizens. However, its larger arc reproduces ethnocentric and individualistic ideologies at the national and personal levels that foreclose the true understanding of and engagement with Otherness that defines learning. What are the particular intellectual and other challenges, pleasures, and rewards of refusing the pedagogical imperative to engage and understand through identification? I conclude the article by deploying theorists of difference to ask what it means to understand difference as difference, how this understanding might be facilitated, and what the …

Ethnography Of Parkland Students: How Do Students Judge Others Based On Their Apparel?, Lori Armstrong Jan 2016

Ethnography Of Parkland Students: How Do Students Judge Others Based On Their Apparel?, Lori Armstrong

Independent Honors Projects

In this brief ethnographic study, the student sets out to reinvestigate the findings of a previous student project focusing on Parkland student’s tendency to judge others based on their attire. Data collection for the two studies were similar: photos representing styles of dress, and participant interviews. However, this study included examples of styles of dress for men in addition to styles of dress for women. Where the first project concluded that students did not tend to judge, this student’s survey showed contradictory results, with more negative judgement being placed on the photos presenting women than those presenting men. The author …

Decision Making At The State And Local Level: Does Science Matter?, Susan G. Mason

Urban Studies and Community Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

Science is believed to be an important part of public policy decision making because of its inherent characteristics of measurability, rigor, objectivity, replication, and peer review. The purpose of this research was to explore the linkage of science to public policy decision making. The research explores what state and local public offi cials know about science and how much they actually use science in their decision making. Interview results with public offi cials in the State of Idaho demonstrate that policy makers ultimately see science as only one element in the mix. Findings suggest that equal attention and debate should …

Late Holocene Expansion Of Ponderosa Pine (Pinus Ponderosa) In The Central Rocky Mountains, Usa, Jodi R. Norris, Julio L. Betancourt, Stephen T. Jackson

United States National Park Service: Publications

Aim: Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) experienced one of the most extensive and rapid post-glacial plant migrations in western North America. We used plant macrofossils from woodrat (Neotoma) middens to reconstruct its spread in the Central Rocky Mountains, identify other vegetation changes coinciding with P. ponderosa expansion at the same sites, and relate P. ponderosa migrational history to both its modern phylogeography and to a parallel expansion by Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma).

Location: Central Rocky Mountains, Wyoming and Montana, and Black Hills, Wyoming and South Dakota, USA.

Methods: Plant macrofossils were analysed in …

The treatmentsconditions were: 1) non-amended soil, 2) 378.125 kg MSWIFA ha-1, 3) 543.75 kg SSha-1,4) 756.25 kg MSWIFA ha-1, 5) 1087.5 kg …

Finding The Right Fit: A Comparison Of Process Assumptions Underlying Popular Drift-Diffusion Models, Nathaniel J. S. Ashby, Marc Jekel, Stephan Dickert, Andreas Glockner Jan 2016

Finding The Right Fit: A Comparison Of Process Assumptions Underlying Popular Drift-Diffusion Models, Nathaniel J. S. Ashby, Marc Jekel, Stephan Dickert, Andreas Glockner

Faculty Works

Recent research makes increasing use of eye-tracking methodologies to generate and test process models. Overall, such research suggests that attention, generally indexed by fixations (gaze duration), plays a critical role in the construction of preference, although the methods employed to support this supposition differ substantially. In two studies we empirically test prototypical versions of prominent processing assumptions against one another and several base models. We find that general evidence accumulation processes provide a good fit to the data. An accumulation process that assumes leakage and temporal variability in evidence weighting (i.e. a primacy effect) fits the aggregate data, both in …

An Empirical Assessment Of Employee Cyberslacking In The Public Sector, Wilnelia Hernández Jan 2016

An Empirical Assessment Of Employee Cyberslacking In The Public Sector, Wilnelia Hernández

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

With the increasing use of the Internet, new challenges are presented to employees in the workplace. Employees spend time during work hours on non-work related activities including visiting e-commerce Websites, managing personal email accounts, and engaging in e-banking. These types of actions in the workplace are known as cyberslacking. Cyberslacking affects the employees’ productivity, presents legal concerns, and undermines the security of the organization’s network. This research study addressed the problem of cyberslacking in the public sector, by assessing the ethical severity of cyberslacking activities, as well as how employees perceived that the frequency of such activities occurred by their …

Rape In Alaska, Caitlin Williams Jan 2016

Rape In Alaska, Caitlin Williams

Undergraduate Research Journal

The National Crime Victimization Survey shows that Alaska has the highest number of sexual assaults of all U.S. states. Rape is a paramount problem in Alaska, for Alaska triples the national average of reported rapes (at 27 per 100,000). In addition, according to the 2014 Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault’s Dashboard, only 33.5 percent of reported forcible rapes resulted in an arrest. Data indicates that Alaska has a high population of Alaska Native (or ANs) women that are assaulted by both AN men and non-AN men. This research examines the core reasons behind the high incidence of AN …
