Presentation Of The Issue On Cuisine & Performance, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau Jan 2016

Presentation Of The Issue On Cuisine & Performance, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau

Presidential Fellows Articles and Research

"Gastronomy is an important part of our culture. The way we eat says a lot about who we are, what culture has shaped us, and the choices we have made concerning our food and the way we eat it. Gastronomy is surrounded by many rituals, and we often perform the way we eat. Besides, since we need to eat every day, we are engaged in rituals and performative acts related to gastronomy every day."

Data-Based Decision Making In School Counseling: Utilizing Multiple Single-Case Indicators To Evaluate Interventions, Ryan J. Mcgill, Kelly S. Kennedy, Randy T. Busse

Education Faculty Articles and Research

As the field of professional school counseling continues to move toward a data-based decision making model of service delivery, there is a need for dissemination of best practice methods for evaluating whether school-based counseling interventions are effective. In that vein, the purpose of this article is to review several methods of data-based decision making within a single-case outcome evaluation model, as well as their potential applications for school counseling interventions. To aid practitioners, the potential use of these methods is demonstrated in a case example and accompanying graphic displays.

Urban Appalachian Festival Proposal, Sarah Holbrook, Courtney Johnston, Ian Buchanan, Cody Stanley, Alex Umble Jan 2016

Urban Appalachian Festival Proposal, Sarah Holbrook, Courtney Johnston, Ian Buchanan, Cody Stanley, Alex Umble

Senior Year Experience Student Projects

We at COAL think that Appalachian culture has been marginalized by American urban centers and being an Appalachian American comes with many negative stereotypes. This is especially felt right here in the Franklinton neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. We want to make an impact in the community in a way that lessens stereotypes towards Appalachian Americans and help the city of Columbus be more inclusive towards Appalachian culture.

We propose to do this by organizing an Appalachian cultural festival that will both address the specific needs of Franklinton and celebrate its Appalachian roots. The specific issues we wish to address include …

The Indomitable Don Plusquellic, Steve Love Jan 2016

The Indomitable Don Plusquellic, Steve Love

University of Akron Press Publications

Until his resignation in May 2015, Don Plusquellic had been the mayor of Akron, Ohio, for twenty-eight years. When he took office in 1987, Ronald Reagan was in the White House, the average price for a car was a little over $10,000, and later that year the US stock market would drop over 22 percent in one day—at the time the sharpest market downturn in the United States since the Great Depression. This was a harbinger of things to come in Akron as the Rubber Capital of the World hemorrhaged jobs. In the 1980s, over 26,000 people were employed in …

Rethinking The Concept Of “Information Literacy”: A German Perspective, Rares G. Piloiu Jan 2016

Rethinking The Concept Of “Information Literacy”: A German Perspective, Rares G. Piloiu

Library Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the original and diverse approaches to the concept of information literacy in the German academic world. Unlike the American notion of information literacy, whose pedagogy, methodology and conceptualization follow guidelines set forth by powerful professional organisations such as ACRL (Association of College and Research Libraries) and ALA (American Library Association), the German notion of information literacy is still negotiated on an interdisciplinary market of ideas ranging from communication science to didactics and from cultural anthropology to epistemology. An awareness of this international perspective on information literacy is timely, given the …

Potential Applications Of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction And Impregnation For The Stabilization And Conservation Of Industrial Heritage Artifacts, Timothy Scarlett Jan 2016

Potential Applications Of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction And Impregnation For The Stabilization And Conservation Of Industrial Heritage Artifacts, Timothy Scarlett

Department of Social Sciences Publications

An interdisciplinary team of students from Michigan Technological University completed a series of tests using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (SC-C02) to extract water and volatile compounds from samples of corroded archaeological iron artifacts. Test samples were then cracked and examined using backscatter SEM. Qualitative visual inspection showed that pores and microfissures were clear and opened after SC-C02 extraction. Another SC-CO2 treatment then impregnated the test objects with an environmentally-benign polymer (Acryloid/ParaloidTM B-72) to consolidate fragile structures and seal objects against future water absorption. Following treatment, these samples were also cracked and examined with SEM. Chemical traces of the polymer demonstrated the …

Seller Beware: Supply And Demand Reduction And Price Manipulation In Multiple-Unit Uniform Price Auctions, Abel Winn, Michael Parente, David Porter Jan 2016

Seller Beware: Supply And Demand Reduction And Price Manipulation In Multiple-Unit Uniform Price Auctions, Abel Winn, Michael Parente, David Porter

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

We experimentally compare under-revelation of supply and demand across alternative variations of ascending and descending two-sided price clock auctions. We find that buyers reduce demand more when the price is ascending but sellers’ behavior is consistent across clock directions. As a result, the clock price rule has empirical effects on efficiency even though it is theoretically neutral.

The Shadow Rate And Its Relationship With Lender And Borrower Variables, Andrei Irimia Jan 2016

The Shadow Rate And Its Relationship With Lender And Borrower Variables, Andrei Irimia

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Since the federal funds rate reached the zero lower bound in late 2008, economists have been struggling to adapt their models to a long-term zero rate. Wu and Xia built upon previous research by Fischer Black to create a model for how the federal funds rate behaves during the ZLB period. In their model, the rate actually dips into the negative digits, which the actual federal funds rate does not do. The logic behind the model is that a negative shadow rate is a much better indicator of true economic conditions while the current zero rate merely masks the actual …

Depression And Anxiety In The Elderly: Translating Clinical Methods For Use By Non-Professionals, Arthur P. Sullivan, Noreen T. Sullivan, John A. Sullivan Jan 2016

Depression And Anxiety In The Elderly: Translating Clinical Methods For Use By Non-Professionals, Arthur P. Sullivan, Noreen T. Sullivan, John A. Sullivan

Department of Behavioral Science Publications and Research

Because seniors suffer depression and anxiety and professional help is not always available, a simple structure is proposed for non-professionals to provide effective help to seniors. These potential helpers who are present in the seniors’ daily environments can then assist the seniors in adjusting to their stage of life and avoid the distress arising from loneliness, purposelessness and physical/mental decline, the factors accounting for the bulk of seniors’ problems. The few therapeutic skills these willing helpers need are described and embedded in a sequence of procedural steps they can use. Mental health professionals are encouraged to teach these skills at …

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

OBJECTIVE: Despite increases in education and awareness, many athletes continue to play with signs and symptoms of a sport-related concussion (SRC). The impact that continuing to play has on recovery is unknown. This study compared recovery time and related outcomes between athletes who were immediately removed from play and athletes who continued to play with an SRC. METHODS: A prospective, repeated measures design was used to compare neurocognitive performance, symptoms, and recovery time between 35 athletes (mean ± SD age, 15.61 ± 1.65 years) immediately removed after an SRC (REMOVED group) compared with 34 athletes (mean ± SD age, 15.35 …

Resilience Of Developing Countries To Shocks: Case Study Of Waemu Countries With Sur And Var Approaches, Assande Adom Jan 2016

Resilience Of Developing Countries To Shocks: Case Study Of Waemu Countries With Sur And Var Approaches, Assande Adom

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

This article investigates the economic resilience of West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) member states to shocks. Towards that end, an indepth study is conducted with, first, seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) and structural vector auto-regression (SVAR) models. Second, two indexes - namely, a resistance index and a recovery index — capturing two major aspects of economic resilience in a given country, or group of countries, are constructed. Following a comprehensive analysis of results, five key elements stand out: (i) the WAEMU as a whole takes longer than the individual member countries to accommodate both domestic and external shocks; (ii) …

The Enculturation Experience Of Three Chinese American Adolescents: A Multiple Case Study, Sherry C. Wang, Vicki Plano-Clark, Michael J. Scheel Jan 2016

The Enculturation Experience Of Three Chinese American Adolescents: A Multiple Case Study, Sherry C. Wang, Vicki Plano-Clark, Michael J. Scheel

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

The authors designed a qualitative, multiple case study that employed the photovoice method to explore how enculturation is experienced by three Chinese adolescents living with their families in a nonethnically dense cultural community. A total of 18 one-on-one interviews were conducted with three youth and their parents. Photos were also used as elicitation tools to understand the meaning of enculturation for each individual. Case descriptions of each adolescent are presented, followed by five cross-case themes: (a) Self- Identifying as Chinese, (b) Parental Strictness, (c) Multiple Groups of Comparison, (d) (Not) Having a Chinese Community, and (e) Messages to Excel. The …

At What Cost? Discrepancies Between Women's Legislative Representation And Effective Policy To Protect Women From Violence In Argentina, Madeline Gannon Jan 2016

At What Cost? Discrepancies Between Women's Legislative Representation And Effective Policy To Protect Women From Violence In Argentina, Madeline Gannon

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

The first country to institute a national-level quota law for the inclusion of female candidates was Argentina in 1991 (Franceschet and Piscopo 2014, 86 ). In a basic sense, "A substantial increase in the number of women in political legislatures is expected to strengthen women's unity and political advocacy, leading to changes in policy content'' (Sacchet 2008, 369). Exactly how the policy content is likely to or ought to change is debated. Both expectation and research has shown that, "Women legislators are more likely than their male colleagues to represent women's interests and to support legislation that is beneficial to …

Perceptions Of Caregiver Distress, Health Behaviors, And Provider Health-Promoting Communication And Their Relationship To Stress Management In Ms Caregivers, Lauren Penwell-Waines, Marie-Christine Goodworth, Rhonda S. Casillas, Lara Stepleman Jan 2016

Perceptions Of Caregiver Distress, Health Behaviors, And Provider Health-Promoting Communication And Their Relationship To Stress Management In Ms Caregivers, Lauren Penwell-Waines, Marie-Christine Goodworth, Rhonda S. Casillas, Lara Stepleman

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

This study applied the Stress/Health Model to examine a novel approach for promoting stress management among 67 caregivers of persons with multiple sclerosis, who often face unique caregiving challenges. Hierarchical regressions indicated that caregiver distress (i.e., emotional burden) and engagement in other health-promoting activities (i.e., controlling alcohol use) were the best predictors of caregiver stress management. Communication with the MS care recipient’s health provider about caregiver engagement in health-promoting activities was associated with caregiver stress management, but not significantly more so than explained by the other factors (i.e., caregiver distress and engagement in health-promoting behaviors). A more controlled study would …

Improving Forensic Software Tool Performance In Detecting Fraud For Financial Statements, Brian Cusack, Tau’Aho Ahokov Jan 2016

Improving Forensic Software Tool Performance In Detecting Fraud For Financial Statements, Brian Cusack, Tau’Aho Ahokov

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

The use of computer forensics is important for forensic accounting practice because most accounting information is in digital forms today. The access to evidence is increasingly more complex and in far greater volumes than in previous decades. The effective and efficient means of detecting fraud are required for the public to maintain their confidence in the reliability of accounting audit and the reputation of accounting firms. The software tools used by forensic accounting can be called into question. Many appear inadequate when faced with the complexity of fraud and there needs to be the development of automated and specialist problem-solving …

Establishing Effective And Economical Traffic Surveillance In Tonga, Brian Cusack, George Maeakafa Jan 2016

Establishing Effective And Economical Traffic Surveillance In Tonga, Brian Cusack, George Maeakafa

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

The Pacific Islands are seriously challenged by the growth in wealth and the expansion of international material possessions. On the roads traffic has grown dramatically and the types of vehicles now using Island roads has greatly changed. With the importation of cheap second hand vehicles designed for freeway speeds serious safety issues have grown proportionally with the increasing numbers. In this research we consider the prohibitive costs of traditional traffic controls to economy and propose a light weight highly mobile aerial surveillance system that integrates with ground policing capability. Our research question was: How can road safety and security be …

Ranking Journalism And Mass Communications Programs: Administrators And Faculty Approve Of The Idea And Assess Potential Criteria, Joseph Weber Jan 2016

Ranking Journalism And Mass Communications Programs: Administrators And Faculty Approve Of The Idea And Assess Potential Criteria, Joseph Weber

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Rankings of universities and colleges are common and controversial. However, few rankers produce useful lists that assess and compare journalism and mass communications programs. The few currently available involve superficial reputational surveys or are less than transparent about their methodology. To determine potential criteria for a useful ranking, this article reports the results of a survey of administrators and educators in a broad cross-section of such programs. The survey finds broad support among respondents for the idea of ranking and, further, details criteria that respondents said they would find useful in developing a ranked list of programs.
