Black, White, & Blue: An Analysis Of Implicit Racial Bias & The Fourth Amendment In The Criminal Justice System, Michael A. Baugh Jan 2016

Black, White, & Blue: An Analysis Of Implicit Racial Bias & The Fourth Amendment In The Criminal Justice System, Michael A. Baugh

Political Science: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Just two score and seven years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. rose to leadership in a fight for racial justice and civil rights in America. As Dr. King famously remarked from the confines of a jail cell in Birmingham, Alabama, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Dr. King’s powerful words hold true today. Controversies, such as the deaths of Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Freddie Gray, and Eric Garner at the hands of officers tasked to protect them, seems to indicate that while progress has been made since the days of Dr. King, racial prejudice and discrimination remain …

Sub-Saharan Africa’S “Other Diseases”: A Comparison Of The Global Response To Neglected Tropical Diseases And Hiv/Aids In Ghana, Rebecca Brosch Jan 2016

Sub-Saharan Africa’S “Other Diseases”: A Comparison Of The Global Response To Neglected Tropical Diseases And Hiv/Aids In Ghana, Rebecca Brosch

Political Science: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) refer to a group of diseases that affect 1.4 billion people worldwide, most commonly in low and low-middle income nations. These conditions can cause disabling and disfiguring effects that keep those inflicted from escaping poverty, leading to increased economic losses in already impoverished areas in Ghana and the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa. Although NTDs affect significantly more of the Ghanaian population, more government resources are given to HIV/AIDS (which only affects an estimated 1.5% of citizens). This research identifies the current response to NTDs (including government policy and NGO support) as well as how more global …

Preparing For Domestic Violence And Associated Trauma: Are We Ready?, Melissa Rodas Jan 2016

Preparing For Domestic Violence And Associated Trauma: Are We Ready?, Melissa Rodas

Undergraduate Research Projects

Domestic violence is an important problem to consider amongst societal issues today. Statistics have consistently shown high rates of violence across the country, and many cases go unreported. Even if survivors are able to escape their situations, trauma often casts a long shadow after the abuse is gone. A best practice model that has been utilized in Tennessee is that of Family Justice Centers. These centers utilize a co-located model to give survivors multiple services in a centralized location. As these organizations find their beginnings, attention is being noted to how social work students are being prepared for such settings. …

Restructuring The Eurozone, Anthony M. Juliano Jan 2016

Restructuring The Eurozone, Anthony M. Juliano

Gettysburg Economic Review

This paper suggests that there should be a realignment of the current Eurozone. There has been research to argue that the Eurozone does not fit the Optimum Currency Area (OCA) criteria. This might be a contributing factor to the current economic crisis in Europe. I propose, based on results from k-means data clustering, that the Eurozone be divided into three separate regions under the European Central Bank (ECB). The division would allow for enhanced stabilization and efficiency due to better fitting of the OCA criteria and policy implications.

Negative Interest Rates: Analyses Abroad And Their Applicability To The U.S. Economy, Danielle Cupp Jan 2016

Negative Interest Rates: Analyses Abroad And Their Applicability To The U.S. Economy, Danielle Cupp

Gettysburg Economic Review

The twenty-first century has thus far posed some of the most difficult economic challenges for policy makers that the world has ever seen. The most recent recession, the Global Financial Crisis of 2007-8, is considered the worst economic downturn in recent history. In light of unique challenges such as the recession, central banks around the world are coming up with new tools or new ways of thinking about tools in order to mediate financial crises. This paper investigates the possibility of eliminating the zero lower bound on nominal interest rates to stimulate the economy in reaction to severe financial crises. …

Global Climate Change, Fair Trade, And Coffee Price Volatility, Thomas M. Segerstrom Jan 2016

Global Climate Change, Fair Trade, And Coffee Price Volatility, Thomas M. Segerstrom

Gettysburg Economic Review

Fair Trade coffee sales have grown exponentially over the past fifteen years amidst a volatile and shaky coffee commodity market. This paper incorporates the prior research that global climate change will lead to more climate shocks with research on the coffee market’s volatility and farmer welfare. In accordance with prior research on commodity volatility, I develop an OLS estimator of the volatility of prices received by growers and evaluate the effect of climate shocks on it. I find that, when control variables are introduced, the volatility of the coffee price does increase at a statistically significant level with a climate …

Developing A Support Center Without Borders: Enhancing Services For Students Without Documentation, Edith Melendez Jan 2016

Developing A Support Center Without Borders: Enhancing Services For Students Without Documentation, Edith Melendez

2016 Symposium

College students without documentation (students) face many academic support hardships. As defined by the National Immigration Law Center, an undocumented person is a foreign national who resides in the United States with fraudulent documents or entered without authorization. Every year hundreds of motivated students with high potential to succeed in an academic setting enroll into four-year university with hopes of becoming upwardly mobile and contributing to society. Unlike college students with authorization, they have added stress and pressures relating to overcoming financial, social, and educational challenges. Despite these obstacles and legal status, they persevere and achieve academic success along educational …

The Use Of Hrt And Mild-Aversion Therapy To Treat Habitual Behaviors, Mary-Jo Waterbury Jan 2016

The Use Of Hrt And Mild-Aversion Therapy To Treat Habitual Behaviors, Mary-Jo Waterbury

2016 Symposium

The effectiveness of habit reversal training (HRT) and mild-aversion therapy were evaluated as a treatment package to reduce my chronic nail biting. This treatment package served to both decrease my nail biting behavior and extinguish it; however, I failed to include HRT’s element of competing response training within the treatment package. As a result, a set of other habitual problem behaviors, including nail, skin and face picking, replaced my nail biting behavior. A second experiment was conducted in which competing response training was included in the treatment package to decrease my nail, skin and face picking behaviors. As a result, …

Flirtation Styles And Tactics Among College Students, Erika Ruppelius Jan 2016

Flirtation Styles And Tactics Among College Students, Erika Ruppelius

2016 Symposium

Dating and flirtation are activities that can be complex and uncertain. Flirtation can be defined as communication with the intent of initiating sexual or romantic relations with another person; this can also be called courtship initiation. Scales have been developed to categorize flirtation into several different groups of styles. The purpose of this study was to determine if male participants were more likely to have a more physical flirtation style, and use this along with more aggressive tactics in scenarios where they would be seeking a flirtatious interaction; additionally, this study investigated if there were potential differences between heterosexual and …

Dental Fluorosis And Fluoride In Consumable Products, Katarina Wasley Jan 2016

Dental Fluorosis And Fluoride In Consumable Products, Katarina Wasley

2016 Symposium

The question on whether on fluoride should be added to consumable products has already been a topic of discussion; one criticism that has been offered to the use of fluoride is the incidence of dental fluorosis. Dental fluorosis is when the enamel has, in its mild forms, either visible white spots, flecks, or streaks. Dental fluorosis is caused by the overconsumption of fluoride during the developmental stage of the permanent tooth’s enamel. The fluoride that can cause this can come from multiple sources, including such sources as drinking water (either naturally occurring or as an additive), dental products that contain …

Ilhan, Nura, Radwa, Ziagull And Children, Ilhan, Tsos

TSOS Interview Gallery

Ilhan, his wife Nura, and their children resided near Kabul, in a region where both the Taliban and ISIS were active. As Shias, Ilhan’s family faced numerous menaces, including threats from ISIS that they would be beheaded if they did not display ISIS flags. Ilhan’s sister Radwa, who is deaf and mute, was forced to marry a regional leader. In addition to being threatened on religious grounds, Ilhan’s family was also threatened by an elder of their town. Out of desperation, Ilhan’s family sold their house appliances, escaped Afghanistan, and arrived at the …

Using Casual Loop Diagramming To Explore The Drivers Of The Sustained Functionality Of Rural Water Services In Timor-Leste, Kate Neely, Jeffrey P. Walters Jan 2016

Using Casual Loop Diagramming To Explore The Drivers Of The Sustained Functionality Of Rural Water Services In Timor-Leste, Kate Neely, Jeffrey P. Walters

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

It is recognized that international water sector development work has issues with a lack of sustained positive outcomes. A large driver of this outcome is how NGOs work with communities to implement and then manage water services. Many NGOs tend to focus their efforts on improving their reach and organisational growth by continually engaging in new projects. This behaviour is largely driven by short-term donor funding models that reward extended coverage, leaving little focus on sustained outcomes. Similarly, community-based management (CBM) schemes often impede sustained services as a result of the community’s limited capacity to operate and maintain the technology. …

Ethics And Animals: Extending Ethics Beyond Our Own Species, Peter Singer Jan 2016

Ethics And Animals: Extending Ethics Beyond Our Own Species, Peter Singer

The Chautauqua Journal

It is commonly held that ethics is about how we ought to treat other human beings. On this view, how we ought to treat animals is not properly part of ethics, or at best, if the treatment of animals is included within ethics at all, then animals have a second-class moral status. We have the right to use them as we see fit, to satisfy our needs and desires without regard to their interests, as long as we do not engage in gratuitous cruelty.

In the pages that follow, I shall argue that this standard view of our moral responsibilities …

Bonobo Mirror Project, Laura L. Newhart Ph.D. Jan 2016

Bonobo Mirror Project, Laura L. Newhart Ph.D.

The Chautauqua Journal

I undertook “The Bonobo Mirror Project” within the context of a graduate level course entitled Primate Behavior and Conservation that was jointly sponsored by Miami University of Ohio, the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens, and Project Dragonfly. The goal of such “Zoo Expedition” courses is to promote inquiry-based learning, community involvement, and conservation. I found it both challenging and rewarding to combine my philosophical training with this very empirically based scientific method of inquiry. The empirical question that “The Bonobo Mirror Project” attempts to answer is: How does the ratio of positive to negative comments made by visitors to the …
