This paper, based on in-depth interviews with journalists at alternative and advocacy papers in St. Louis as well as interviews with live streaming protestors, a new breed of citizen journalist, applies six characteristics commonly associated with the alternative press to coverage of the protests and police crackdown in Ferguson, Missouri, between August 9, 2014, and March 2015.
Journalists from the alternative newspaper in St. Louis focused on progressive or radical values less than the literature predicted. The African-American newspaper in St. Louis found itself influencing the national and global agenda regarding Ferguson and the ongoing oppression of blacks in the …

This study experimentally tested whether participants held and/or applied stereotypes of baseball players. Participants were asked to rate white, black, and Latino baseball players based on stereotypes consistently identified in previous literature.
Participants saw a photo of a player and an anonymous paragraph from a newspaper that highlighted a particular stereotype. They were then asked to rate the author's credibility. Black players were rated as higher in physical strength and natural ability, consistent with previous literature concerning how athletes were described. However, white and Latin players were not stereotyped. But participants rated white-consistent descriptions as credible and Latin-consistent descriptions as …
Transformative Professional Development And The Promotion Of Literacy Through Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, Sara Soledad Garcia, Christina F. Garcia
Transformative Professional Development And The Promotion Of Literacy Through Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, Sara Soledad Garcia, Christina F. Garcia
Teacher Education
This article recounts a narrative of professional transformation inspired by the works of Paulo Freire and Gloria Ladson-Billings and advanced by a participatory action research (PAR) project. The PAR team for this case study, consisting of the university teacher educator as a “coach” and a high school classroom teacher along with her students, examines the use of community-based knowledge in a form of corrido (ballads) studies. In this process, the ballads become the basis for learners’ engagement with literacy activities in the context of what is known as a heritage language Spanish class. The analysis focuses on the process of …

La Responsabilidad Social, Un Componente Esencial De La Formación En Un Programa De Química Ambiental, Liliana Caycedo Lozano, Diana Marcela Trujillo Suárez, Sara Soledad Garcia
Teacher Education
The complexity of the current environmental situation in Colombia requires professionals integrally trained with the guidelines of transformation aimed at overcoming the effects of traditional methodological paradigms of teaching and learning. The professional should have a conceptual understanding of nature as a system of systems, which include human beings. The future of the planet needs not to focus only on "good practices", such required education is to consider the interconnection of all systems of the environment; as well as a plan that includes a vision that harmonizes the balance between all the natural elements through an interdisciplinary approach to transform …
Review Of The Palgrave Handbook Of Global Philanthropy, Anthony Raymond
Review Of The Palgrave Handbook Of Global Philanthropy, Anthony Raymond
Staff publications, research, and presentations
This 2015 addition to the Palgrave Social Science Handbook series has the goal of providing a framework for understanding “how to shape a society with the best conditions for philanthropic giving”. In their introduction Wiepking and Handy refer to the eight mechanisms that drive people to make philanthropic donations which they distilled from a literature review of more than 500 empirical articles. While much in known about individual motivations for philanthropic donation to nonprofit organizations the current work sets out to build on this knowledge and provide a framework for understanding “the conditions under which people are more, or less, …

The Minimum Wage: A Reference Handbook. Edited by Oren M. Levin-Waldman. Santa Barbara, CA: ABC-CLIO, 2016. 354 p. $58 hardcover (ISBN: 978-1-4408-3394-6), $58 (1 user) e-book (978-1-4408-3395-3).
Debate among economists over the theoretical and actual efficacy of a minimum wage seems as intense today as it ever was and in the American political arena the debate continues to be contentious and sharply divided along party lines. While not a completely balanced treatment, this recent addition to ABC-CLIO’s Contemporary World Issues series is notable because it provides essential background on the struggle for, and against, a minimum wage law that is …
Boundary Formation And Cultural Construction: How Do Chinese Andindian Immigrant Converts Understand Religious Identity?, Di Di
Sociology
Most scholars study immigrants' religious lives in a vacuum, paying little attention to the religious lives of people who switch from one religious tradition to another. This article relies on interviews with Chinese and Indian immigrant converts in the U.S. to provide a unique comparative perspective on the religious lives of Asian immigrant converts, with a specific focus on their identity construction processes. Findings indicate that Chinese and Indian immigrants establish different types of boundaries, but form similar cultural content within their identities. I debunk the assumption in existing theories that religious conversion is an either/or transition.

Social Media In The Sexual Lives Of African American And Latino Youth: Challenges And Opportunities In The Digital Neighborhood, Robin Stevens, Jamie Dunaev, Ellen Malven, Amy Bleakley, Shawnika J. Hull
Prevention and Community Health Faculty Publications
There has been significant interest in the role of social media in the lives of adolescents, particularly as it relates to sexual risk. Researchers have focused on understanding usage behaviors, quantifying effects of social media exposure and activity, and using social media to intervene. Much of this work has focused on college students and non-minority youth. In this paper, we examine the growing body of literature around social media use among US minority youth and its intersection with sexual risk behavior. We introduce the concept of the “digital neighborhood” and examine the intersection of social media and sexual health in …

State systems are a rich, albeit challenging, laboratory for policy-relevant services research studies. State mental health authorities routinely devote resources to collect data for state planning and reporting purposes. However, these data are rarely used in cross-state comparisons to inform state or federal policy development. In 2008, in response to key recommendations from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Advisory Council’s “The Road Ahead: Research Partnership to Transform Services,” (http://www.nimh.nih.gov/about/advisory-boards-and-groups/namhc/reports/road-ahead.pdf), NIMH issued a request for applications (RFA) to support studies on the impact of state policy changes on access, cost, quality and outcomes of care for individuals …

Empirical Assessment Of Cyber Harassment Victimization Via Cyber-Routine Activities Theory, Sinchul Back
Master’s Theses and Projects
Over the decades, the advance of the social networking sites and computer-mediated communication tools has facilitated cybercriminals to expand their scope of criminal activities from the physical world to the virtual realm. Cybercriminals can easily leverage the Internet to operate sexual crime such as cyber-harassment. This study aims to empirically assess cyber-harassment victimization in South Korea via Cyber-Routine Activities Theory (2008). Cyber-Routine Activities Theory includes five major tenets: 1) digital capable guardianship, 2) motivated offender online, 3) suitable target online, 4) online risky behavior, and 5) online vocational and leisure activities. Data were derived from the 2013 Korean Institute of …

Co-written by eight people, this paper describes how the UCSC Community Psychology Research and Action Team (CPRAT) organizes itself in weekly group meetings and how this structure is an attempt to embody an ethical, critically reflexive anti-racist feminist praxis. First, we outline the community psychology core competency of an ethical, reflective practice (Dalton & Wolfe, 2012). We offer a friendly amendment to consider an ethical, critically reflexive anti-racist feminist praxis. Second, we discuss how we organize CPRAT meetings to uphold these ideas. We describe our current structure, which includes personal and project check-ins, rotating facilitation, and attention to broader professional …

The Global Agriculture And Food Security Program: An Evaluation Of The Public Private Partnership In Malawi, Madhavi Venkatesan
Economics Faculty Publications
Chronic food security issues in Africa have recently spurred an increase in public–private partnerships (PPPs), as governments across the continent look to stimulate agricultural productivity. Through multiple international channels, PPPs are implementing various programs within the agricultural sector as a means to promote both nutrition and food security. However, there are some constraints that may impede the success of PPP in the near-term such as inadequate legal and regulatory framework for PPPs; lack of technical skills to manage PPP programs and projects; unfavorable investor perception of country risk, small market size, limited infrastructure and limited financial markets. Additionally, the success …

Ransomware Against Police: Diagnosis Of Risk Factors Via Application Of Cyber-Routine Activities Theory, Kyung-Shick Choi, T. M. Scott, Daniel P. Leclair
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Technologically advanced hackers are able to commit a crime and leave undiscovered by the authorities. Recent increases in cyber-attacks utilizing technology known as ransomware are leaving police departments and other institutions in the serious situation of having to pay ransom to cybercriminals. The present study employs a Cyber-Routine Theoretical approach in explaining why ransomware victimization has become a viral phenomenon. Data were derived from the recent reported cases of ransomware attacks towards police departments in the U.S. and analyzed in order to build a victim profile. This study shows that online lifestyle and cybersecurity are the salient factors that contribute …
Connecting Political Communication With Urban Politics: A Bourdieusian Framework, Yongjun Shin
Connecting Political Communication With Urban Politics: A Bourdieusian Framework, Yongjun Shin
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
In this article, I connect political communication with urban politics by conceptualizing an interdisciplinary urban politics research framework. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s theories of practice and communication, I offer an urban politics research model that simultaneously addresses the dimensions of power struggle and symbolic struggle in urban politics. The theoretical modeling is discussed from an interdisciplinary approach to social studies and constructed with a methodological suggestion of tripartite social network analysis.

For almost 40 years, the Minute Paper has been a quick and easy means of learning assessment, both in the college classroom and in library instruction. More recently, the use of social media, particularly selfies, has gained popularity by connecting with students through the technology with which they are most familiar. This article makes the case for combining the Minute Paper and selfies in order to gain an insight into students’ skill development and retention after a library session. Adaptable to a variety of classes and learning outcomes, the activity enables students to actively use the skills they have learned, …

Research in Outdoor Education
The aim of this research was to examine the effectiveness of outdoor education on middle school students' energy literacy. An energy literacy curriculum was developed and taught in both outdoor and traditional, indoor classroom settings. Energy literacy constructs of knowledge, attitude, and behavior were evaluated and measured using a survey distributed pre, post, and 1–month after the curriculum was taught. The population (n=130) of this study was 6th grade students attending a five-day residential education program at an outdoor science school. Results showed greater increases in middle school students' energy literacy knowledge, attitude, and behavior when taught in …
