More Than Four Walls: The Psychology Of Home

Joe Ferrari, professor of psychology and Vincent de Paul professor in DePaul's College of Science and Health, discusses his research to understand what "home" means to people, a nebulous, but important feeling we have. The psychology of home is an important new area study because of the millions of baby boomers heading into retirement in the United States who may be headed for life in nursing facilities and the 59.5 million displaced persons worldwide who will need assistance dealing with disruption and feelings of loss.

Aquatic Exercise For Better Living On Land: Impact Of Shallow-Water Exercise On Older Japanese Women For Performance Of Activities Of Daily Living (Adl), Mary E. Sanders, Mohammod M. Islam, Aiko Naruse, Nobuo Takeshima, Michael E. Rogers

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Twenty-six Japanese women (70.5 yr) self-selected water exercise (WEX) (n=13), or control (CON) (n=13) for 12 weeks. WEX was performed 60-minutes/day, 3 days/week with warm-up, cool-down stretch, ADL exercises, and cardiovascular/muscular endurance in 30°C water at a xiphoid level depth. CON continued their current activity/nutrition patterns. Compared to CON, WEX improved (p<.05) functional fitness and balance measures including arm curl (22%), chair stand (21%), 8-feet up & go (13%), chair sit/reach (50%), and 12-min walk (15%). No significant changes in sway velocity (SV) or limits of stability (LOS) were seen for either group. This shallow water exercise improved land-based ADL for older women but not balance. ADL tasks associated with balance did improve which may have indicated enhanced motor control.

Correctional facilities have a discernible "social climate," or collection of contextual properties that derive from perceptions of both staff and prisoners. These properties include the physical, organizational, social, and emotional characteristics of correctional institutions. Ohio's Correctional Institution Inspection Committee (CIIC) requested research assistance to assess the validity of their adult and youth surveys, which are administered during the CIIC's regular inspections of facilities. The purpose of this study was to assess the validity of these instruments and the process by which they are administered. The study builds on the existing line of research on prison social climate surveys.

This paper attempts to highlight the growth and development of Spintronics publication based on Web of Science database during the period 2000-2014. A total of 6195 publications were published on spintronics, which received 134,467 citations. The average number of publications per year was 413 and the average number of citations per publication was 21.71. The publications peaked in 2014 with 874 publications, whereas the highest number of citations 16,696 was received in 2005. The highest number of publications was from USA with 1506 (24.31%) publications and 64.479 (47.95%) citations followed by China with 1.425 (23%) publications, 16.264 (12.10%) citations and …

Since the end of the Second World War some 70 years ago, research and scholarship featuring wartime contributions of the average British citizenhasfocused largely on men's experiences of combat, the various roles of government agencies, or the assumed viability and tenacity of political and military leaders. Although global food demand is expected to increase 60% by 2050 compared with 2005/2007, the rise will be much greater in sub- Saharan Africa (SSA). Indeed, SSA is the region at greatest food security risk because by 2050 its population will increase 2.5-fold and demand for cereals approximately triple, whereas current levels of cereal consumption already depend on substantial imports. At issue is whether SSA can meet this vast increase in cereal demand without greater reliance on cereal imports or major expansion of agricultural area and associated biodiversity loss and greenhouse gas emissions. Reber believes he has simplified Chalmers’s “hard problem” of consciousness by arguing that subjectivity is an inherent feature of biological forms. His argument rests on the related notions of continuity of mind and gradual accretion of capacities across evolutionary time. These notions need to be defended, not just asserted. Because Reber minimizes the differences in mental faculties among species across evolutionary time, it becomes easier to assert, and perhaps believe, that sentience is already present in early biological forms. This paper focuses on influence of Talcott Parsons on the thought of Terence Turner, and explores how Turner's Brazilian ethnography led to a critical rethinking of Parsons' general theory of action. While Turner's adaptation of Marxian theory of value to anthropology is often read as a practice-oriented alternative to structuralism, I argue that it can also be fruitfully understood as a response to general theoretical questions first posed by Parsons. Late in his career, Turner published a series of papers on "globalization" which apply his Marxian analysis of the social production of the person in Amazonia to questions of citizenship …

This essay applies Terence Turner’s insight that production is the key to understanding social value to the context of an urban poor community in Fortaleza, Brazil. It uses this insight to address a contemporary tension in the community between democratic values espoused by city and state politicians and local forms of value which glorify fraternity and dignity. I argue that older women’s daily activities (such as courtyard maintenance, siestas, and dinner potlucks) produce the values of dignity and fraternity, which women regard as essential to sustaining their households’ viability. In this essay I describe what I have seen elapse over twenty years in the lives (and sometimes deaths) of two shamans and their respective wives in Isoso, an indigenous community of Guarani-speaking people in the Bolivian Chaco. These shamans’ two different kinds of shamanic practice, their two different sorts of marriage, and the two different life-trajectories of their wives resonate with the dual nature of Isoso itself and its historical constitution. The reproduction of a hierarchical Arawakan way of life through feminine submission to a Guarani “egalitarianism” of masculine dominance has been, I suspect, a dynamic of long standing …

Illusion And Value, Or Marcel Mauss On Alienability And Inalienability, Marcos Lanna

This article reexamines Marcel Mauss’s The Gift and suggests that a certain degree not only of alienability and inalienability but also of illusion is a condition for communication and social organization. Even if there is not an explicit concept of illusion in Mauss’s works, the paper points out that it is present in those of Claude Lévi-Strauss, and that both Mauss’ and Lévi-Strauss’ perspectives can be fruitfully contrasted to Karl Marx’s theory of alienation. Starting from Mauss, this paper offers an exploration of logical and historical continuities between the notions of the gift and of commodities, arguing that they are …
