Cultural Compromises: Effects And Perceptions Of Formal Education Among The Himba Of Namibia, Jessica Andrus, Greg Thompson Jan 2016

Cultural Compromises: Effects And Perceptions Of Formal Education Among The Himba Of Namibia, Jessica Andrus, Greg Thompson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Himba of Namibia have only recently been introduced to formal education within the past 20 years. Previously, formal education was not as readily available to them. This has led to a major cultural shift among the Himba. Traditionally, the Himba do not count, read, or speak English, but formal education is changing that. Through an ethnographic study in Otutati, Namibia, I found that the reasons the Himba are more positive towards education is because they have found ways to reconcile the traditional culture and formal education, enjoying the benefits of both lifestyles.

Developing A Typology Of Human Rights Records, Noah Geraci, Michelle Caswell

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

What makes a record a "human rights record"? What types of records fall under this umbrella term? How and why might we develop a typology of such records? What is at stake—ethically, theoretically, and practically—in the ways in which and the reasons why we define and classify records as such? This article seeks to answer these questions by delineating a typology of human rights records. First, this article will provide a literature review exploring the history of conceptions of human rights records in archival studies, as well as the ongoing discussion in information studies more broadly about the politics of …

Governance Reforms In Government, Public Sector, And Regulatory Bodies, Ishrat Husain Dr. Jan 2016

Governance Reforms In Government, Public Sector, And Regulatory Bodies, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

Let me begin by setting the context in which the discussion of this topic should be focused. Eighty percent of national economic output is generated by the private sector. Government however plays a critical role in the generation of this output through its overwhelming role in the polity, economy and international relations. So a prior question that needs to be addressed before delving in the topic: What should be the appropriate relationship between government and private business in Pakistan? In my view, the government has at least five functions to perform – an Enabler and Regulator, Protector of Life and …

Bestiario Fronterizo: Chupacabras, Zonkeys, Vampiros Y Las Representaciones De Los Miedos Del Norte, Martín Camps

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

Anchors, Habitus, And Practices Besieged By War: Women And Gender In The Blockade Of Leningrad, Jeffrey K. Hass Jan 2016

Anchors, Habitus, And Practices Besieged By War: Women And Gender In The Blockade Of Leningrad, Jeffrey K. Hass

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

As war challenges survival and social relations, how do actors alter and adapt dispositions and practices? To explore this question, I investigate women's perceptions of normal relations, practices, status, and gendered self in an intense situation of wartime survival, the Blockade of Leningrad (1941–1944), an 872-day ordeal that demographically feminized the city. Using Blockade diaries for data on everyday life, perceptions, and practices, I show how women's gendered skills and habits of breadseeking and caregiving (finding scarce resources and providing aid) were key to survival and helped elevate their sense of status. Yet this did not entice rethinking “gender.” To …

Modeling Postpartum Depression In Rats: Theoretic And Methodological Issues, Ming Li, Shinn-Yi Chou Jan 2016

Modeling Postpartum Depression In Rats: Theoretic And Methodological Issues, Ming Li, Shinn-Yi Chou

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The postpartum period is when a host of changes occur at molecular, cellular, physiological and behavioral levels to prepare female humans for the challenge of maternity. Alteration or prevention of these normal adaptions is thought to contribute to disruptions of emotion regulation, motivation and cognitive abilities that underlie postpartum mental disorders, such as postpartum depression. Despite the high incidence of this disorder, and the detrimental consequences for both mother and child, its etiology and related neurobiological mechanisms remain poorly understood, partially due to the lack of appropriate animal models. In recent decades, there have been a number of attempts to …
