The Urban Prison: Socioeconomic Vortexes In Latino Neighborhoods, Armando Porras, Aaron Wyatt Jan 2016

The Urban Prison: Socioeconomic Vortexes In Latino Neighborhoods, Armando Porras, Aaron Wyatt

Research on Capitol Hill

This research shows how metropolitan cities throughout the United States are continuously impacting the lives of ethnic minorities.

In the United States, Latina/o individuals have been born into socioeconomic vortexes. In other words, they have grown up in areas where secure jobs have disappeared and a variety of other factors force them to live in damaged communities that do not foster economic and social progression.

By analyzing several works of literature written by Latina/o authors who lived in barrios that faced these challenges, as well as research addressing crime and the lack of law enforcement in marginalized neighborhoods, we have …

Links Between Outdoor Recreation And Environmental Concern Among Utahns, Matthew J. Barnett Jan 2016

Links Between Outdoor Recreation And Environmental Concern Among Utahns, Matthew J. Barnett

Research on Capitol Hill

  • Research has shown that the processes which drive the way that people experience and perceive the environment around them are complex and dynamic. This extends to the perceptions that people have regarding environmental and natural resource concerns.
  • Outdoor recreational activity allows for people to have varying types of tactile experience with bodies of water, as well as providing a social space in which distinct subcultures may develop. This study explores the possibility that recreation specialization, or type and frequency of water-based activities may influence the perceptions of Utahns regarding water quality.
  • Investigating the ways in which social processes intersect and …

School Families: The Impact Of Participation In High School Extracurricular Activities, Erica Hawvermale Jan 2016

School Families: The Impact Of Participation In High School Extracurricular Activities, Erica Hawvermale

Research on Capitol Hill

The present study was designed to analyze the relationship between participation in extracurricular activities and high school adolescents' psychological sense of community (PSOC). Extant research has linked PSOC to the several benefits (below). As such we believe that PSOC acts as a buffer between adolescents and negative high school outcomes.

Psychological Sense of Community

The perception held by a member of a group that one belongs and matters. Further, PSOC captures that the group matters to each other and that through group commitment, shared needs will be met. Thus, PSOC encompasses four main concepts: membership, influence, fulfillment of needs, and …

Blog Consumption And International Relations, Michael A. Allen Jan 2016

Blog Consumption And International Relations, Michael A. Allen

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

International relations professors have sought to incorporate current events into their curriculum through various mechanisms. A traditional way to incorporate the news into the classroom is to have students either subscribe and read a particular newspaper, or watch the nightly news, and hold them responsible for that information. However, with the growing body of professional political science blogs available to the general public, we now have access to immediate current event updates framed through the lens of political science. This manuscript tests to see if having students regularly read professional political science blogs increases student achievement on multiple choice exams …

First In The Nation: New Hampshire's Changing Electorate, Kenneth M. Johnson, Dante J. Scala, Andrew Smith

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Ken Johnson, Dante Scala, and Andrew Smith discuss demographic forces that are reshaping the New Hampshire landscape. They report that the voting population of New Hampshire is among the most mobile in the United States. More than 30 percent of the potential voters are new to the state’s electoral process since 2008. These younger voters and recent migrants have the potential to change the political landscape of the state in the coming presidential primary and November election. The new young voters tend to be more liberal than their older contemporaries. These younger voters also identify less …

Publications

Prevention of childhood obesity is a global priority. The school setting offers access to large numbers of children and the ability to provide supportive environments for quality physical activity and nutrition. This article describes Project Energize, a through-school physical activity and nutrition programme that celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2015 so that it might serve as a model for similar practices, initiatives and policies elsewhere. The programme was envisaged and financed by the Waikato District Health Board of New Zealand in 2004 and delivered by Sport Waikato to 124 primary schools as a randomised controlled trial from 2005 to 2006. …

The Experiences Of Siblings Of Individuals With Disabilities: A Holistic View, Ashley Mc Adams Jan 2016

The Experiences Of Siblings Of Individuals With Disabilities: A Holistic View, Ashley Mc Adams

Educational Studies Dissertations

The research on siblings of individuals with disabilities has rarely addressed the perceived benefits of having a sibling with a disability. The existing research on the experience of siblings of persons with disabilities is also limited to European American families (Sage & Jegatheesan, 2010). With families from different cultures, I sought to capture the experiences of brothers and sisters who have siblings with disabilities. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationships of siblings with disabilities and typical developing siblings, and present a holistic picture from the perspective of the typical developing siblings. These gaps in the literature …

Patient- And Family-Identified Problems Of Traumatic Brain Injury: Value And Utility Of A Target Outcome Approach To Identifying The Worst Problems, Laraine Winter, Helene J. Moriarty, Catherine V. Piersol, Tracey Vause-Earland, Keith Robinson, Brian Newhart

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Purpose

This study aimed to identify the sequelae of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that are most troubling to veterans with TBI and their families and identify veteran-family differences in content and ranking. Instead of standardized measures of symptom frequency or severity, which may be insensitive to change or intervention effects, we used a target outcome measure for veterans with TBI and their key family members, which elicited open-ended reports concerning the three most serious TBI-related problems. This was followed by Likert-scaled ratings of difficulty in managing the problem.

Methods

In this cross-sectional study, interviews were conducted in veterans’ homes. Participants …

The Implications Of Doing Gender In The Digital Dating World, Brianna May Badili

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This study investigates digital dating and how men and women function within the phenomena in terms of gendered communication. The theory of semiotics, as described by CK Ogden and Roland Barthes, was used as a frame to analyze photographs, text, and actions among men and women particularly on the application Tinder to understand the construction of gender within a digital dating world. Original research was conducted using 15 participants, 11 female and 4 male, with 15-50 minute interviews, investigating their experiences with symbols and exploring gendered communication and symbols that perpetuate ideas about gender roles within dating in online settings. …

The Role Of Service-Learning And Mentoring In The Early Career Development Of A Research Methodologist, Cheryl H. Keen, Heather Pease

The Qualitative Report

Anxiety about statistics may impede new scholars from developing quantitative research skills and from sharing those skills in service-learning, internship, and work settings. Using an interpretive case study design with a convenience sample of one emerging student leader in a collaborative university-community service-learning research project, we explored the question “How did the career path of a quantitatively skilled researcher develop?” Data collected over a 3-and-a-half-year period included 7 semi-structured interviews with the student during her master’s and doctoral program and interviews with 3 mentors, 2 peers, and 2 community partners, as well as observations and documents. A constant comparison analysis …

Lived Experiences Of A Hong Kong Physical Education Teacher: Ethnographical And Phenomenological Approaches, Raymond Kim Wai Sum, Teng-Yao Shi

The Qualitative Report

This study employed ethnographical and phenomenological methods to explore the lived experiences and career of a Hong Kong secondary school physical education (PE) teacher (Wharton) in order to embody his versatile roles through phenomenological description of a lived body itself and the lived world. The central research question is “How does a male secondary school PE teacher manage his work life and the embodiment of his professional roles?” Data collection techniques were in-depth interviewing, participant observation and field notes, participant’s reflection documentation and visual elicitation. Concepts of “play to learn,” “professional development” and “political empowerment” were used to examine Wharton’s …

The Degree Of Civilian Control And Military Effectiveness In Combating Insurgency: A Case Study Of Turkey And Pakistan, Ahmed Elbohy Jan 2016

The Degree Of Civilian Control And Military Effectiveness In Combating Insurgency: A Case Study Of Turkey And Pakistan, Ahmed Elbohy

Capstone and Graduation Projects

This research studied the relationship between the degree of civilian control, in military dominated political systems, and military effectiveness in combating insurgency using comparative case study analysis of Turkey and Pakistan and their conflict with the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) and the Taliban Movement in Pakistan (TTP) respectively. In contemporary world, many states e.g. Ukraine, Egypt, Syria, Libya, Yemen and Saudi Arabia are involved in irregular warfare with insurgencies which are threatening domestic security and disturbing global peace. On another front, many states, especially in the Middle East and Africa, are facing the problem of disturbed civil-military relations or weak …

Promoting Corporate Intelligence In Italy To Improve Stability In The Middle East, Antonio Giuseppe Di Pietro Jan 2016

Promoting Corporate Intelligence In Italy To Improve Stability In The Middle East, Antonio Giuseppe Di Pietro

Capstone and Graduation Projects

Most national and international legislative instruments impose a duty to conduct appropriate due diligence when doing business, in order to hold each company accountable for the malicious activities of its partners. This project’s main argument is that formal due diligence is not enough when it comes to preventing corrupt business behavior, particularly when dealing with highly corrupt environments. Starting with an analysis of the Italian legislative efforts, this project demonstrates how the promotion of corporate intelligence into standard business practice could fill the gaps left by due diligence. Emphasis is placed upon the adoption of corporate intelligence among SMEs, given …
