The Effect Of Community And Individual Differences On College Students' Attitudes And Behaviors Towards Transgender Individuals, Laura Hackimer Feb 2016

The Effect Of Community And Individual Differences On College Students' Attitudes And Behaviors Towards Transgender Individuals, Laura Hackimer

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

For transgender adolescents in an environment consisting largely of non-transgender (cisgender) individuals, whether adults and their peers in school are rejecting or accepting of their gender identity can have a large impact on their immediate and future outcomes. As college students will go on to form the social environment for the next generation of transgender adolescents, it is important to assess their beliefs and behaviors regarding this population. The present study sought to investigate the impact of individual and community factors on cisgender college students’ attitudes and behaviors towards transgender individuals. Using a sample of 302 cisgender college students from …

Program Performance And Multiple Constituency Theory, David Campbell, Kristina T. Lambright

Public Administration Faculty Scholarship

This paper seeks to deepen our understanding of performance measurement in the nonprofit human services sector by investigating issues related to funder and provider motivations for collecting and analyzing program level performance information. Using survey and interview data from nonprofit human service organizations and their funders (nonprofit and local government), we analyze this study’s research questions through the lens of multiple constituency theory. Consistent with multiple constituency theory, the study found similarities and differences in funder and provider motivations for collecting performance information. The study also indicates other key constituents (such as service beneficiaries, donors to nonprofit organizations and other …

Turning Atrocity Prevention Inside-Out: Community-Based Approaches To Preventing, Protecting, And Recovering From Mass Violence, Bridget Moix

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Abstract: This article reviews recent research and evolving practice of community-based approaches to preventing and mitigating mass violence. It considers growing evidence that externally driven international interventions in response to violence are failing due to a lack of recognition and support for local actors, and increasing research into locally-led efforts, such as community protection strategies, early warning and response systems, interreligious peacebuilding, and post-atrocity trauma healing. Drawing from examples from a wide range of cases, including Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Colombia, and Sri Lanka, the article identifies key lessons for improving atrocity prevention policy and …

Hpcnmf: A High-Performance Toolbox For Non-Negative Matrix Factorization, Karthik Devarajan, Guoli Wang

COBRA Preprint Series

Non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) is a widely used machine learning algorithm for dimension reduction of large-scale data. It has found successful applications in a variety of fields such as computational biology, neuroscience, natural language processing, information retrieval, image processing and speech recognition. In bioinformatics, for example, it has been used to extract patterns and profiles from genomic and text-mining data as well as in protein sequence and structure analysis. While the scientific performance of NMF is very promising in dealing with high dimensional data sets and complex data structures, its computational cost is high and sometimes could be critical for …

Research Software Sustainability: Report On A Knowledge Exchange Workshop, Simon Hettrick

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Without software, modern research would not be possible. Understandably, people tend to marvel at results rather than the tools used in their discovery, which means the fundamental role of software in research has been largely overlooked. But whether it is widely recognised or not, research is inexorably connected to the software that is used to generate results, and if we continue to overlook software we put at risk the reliability and reproducibility of the research itself. The adoption of software is accompanied by new risks - many of which are unknown to the majority of the research community. The practices …

Going For The Gold: The Economics Of The Olympics, Victor Matheson, Robert Baade Feb 2016

Going For The Gold: The Economics Of The Olympics, Victor Matheson, Robert Baade

Economics Department Working Papers

In this paper, we explore the costs and benefits of hosting the Olympic Games. On the cost side, there are three major categories: general infrastructure such as transportation and housing to accommodate athletes and fans; specific sports infrastructure required for competition venues; and operational costs, including general administration as well as the opening and closing ceremony and security. Three major categories of benefits also exist: the short-run benefits of tourist spending during the Games; the long-run benefits or the "Olympic legacy" which might include improvements in infrastructure and increased trade, foreign investment, or tourism after the Games; and intangible benefits …

Does Transition Experience Improve Newcomer Performance? Evidence From The National Basketball Association, Joseph R. Radzevick

Management Faculty Publications

A substantial body of research has highlighted the effects of experience on individual performance in groups. However, the challenges individuals confront after moving between groups require the adoption of more finely grained categorizations of experience to understand how they will help or hinder performance in novel group environments. This article develops a distinct form of experience here termed transition experience to deal specifically with insights individuals accumulate as they shift membership between different groups and contrasts its impact with that of the frequently examined component of related task experience. Player movement data from the National Basketball Association is used to …

Mindfulness And Self-Compassion: Mitigating Compassion Fatigue, Elaine Loiacono Feb 2016

Mindfulness And Self-Compassion: Mitigating Compassion Fatigue, Elaine Loiacono

Mindfulness Studies Theses

Research on the inherently stressful nature of working with those who are suffering, traumatized and dying, including the potential for developing secondary trauma, stress and burn/out is growing. For example, Joan Halifax (2011), Christopher Germer (2011), and Charles Figley are a few of the researchers studying compassion fatigue. As a result, there is also increasing research conducted on various solutions to mitigate the distress of caregivers. The findings show how mindfulness can actually build resilience and alleviate compassion fatigue. This review focuses on the literature that makes significant contributions to the field of mindfulness, compassion, self-compassion, and compassion fatigue/empathic distress. …

From Patient To Student Activation: Development Of The Student Activation Measure, Clinton J. Smith Feb 2016

From Patient To Student Activation: Development Of The Student Activation Measure, Clinton J. Smith

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The Patient Activation Measure (PAM) was constructed to measure a person’s knowledge, skill, and confidence for self-managing one’s healthcare, or “activation” (Hibbard, Stockard, Mahoney, & Tusler, 2004). The Student Activation Measure (SAM) extends this definition to secondary education. The SAM is a short, positively worded measure that is intended to guide intervention planning. Six hundred three students from two disparate high schools located in the Pacific Northwest completed the measure and an accompanying demographic questionnaire. The respective schools provided the students’ GPAs and attendance records. Using Rasch modeling, the SAM evidenced excellent reliability and construct validity. One-way ANOVAs with post …

Comparative Resources: Continental Philosophy And Daoism, Steven Burik Feb 2016

Comparative Resources: Continental Philosophy And Daoism, Steven Burik

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

I argue that continental philosophical resources are more appropriate for comparative philosophy regarding classical Daoism since they in various ways challenge the dominant metaphysical orientation of Western thought and give us a better and more appropriate vocabulary to make sense of important Daoist ideas within the confines of Western languages. Since classical Daoism is largely non-metaphysical or at least not metaphysical in the same way as the Western history of philosophy is, it makes sense that those within the Western tradition who have sought to displace the dominant metaphysical tradition would be more in tune with such non-metaphysical considerations. I …

Exploring The Use Of An Iphone App: A Novel Approach To Dietary Assessment, Melissa Keeney, Ming-Chin Yeh, Rissa Landman, May May Leung, Ann Gaba, Khursheed Navder

Publications and Research

Recent advancements in smartphone technology have provided new methods of dietary assessment. An iTunes application (app) called Meal Snap lets users take pictures of the meal they eat, and then estimates the calories of the food items eaten. We conducted a pilot study to explore the user-friendliness and calorie estimation functions of the Meal Snap app. Two female nutrition graduate students pilot-tested the Meal Snap app. Using the app, each student took pictures of foods and drinks consumed daily for two weeks. The data were analyzed using the Nutritionist ProTM software, version 4.4.0. The mean daily caloric intake obtained from …

Ranking: Perceptions Of Tied Ranks And Equal Intervals On A Modified Visual Analog Scale, Jerry Timbrook, William F. Moroney Feb 2016

Ranking: Perceptions Of Tied Ranks And Equal Intervals On A Modified Visual Analog Scale, Jerry Timbrook, William F. Moroney

Psychology Faculty Publications

This study examined a novel paper-based ranking system (called the BINS format) that was designed to address two limitations of traditional ranking formats. This new system allows respondents to: 1) assign ties to ranked alternatives and 2) indicate distance between ranked alternatives. Participants reported high satisfaction with the ability to express ties using the BINS format, and preferred to use a ranking format that allowed for ties over a format that did not. Two versions of the BINS format (a numbered continuum and an unnumbered continuum) were compared to examine participants’ perception of the distance between ranked alternatives. When a …

Prediction In A Generalized Spatial Panel Data Model With Serial Correlation, Badi H. Baltagi, Long Liu Feb 2016

Prediction In A Generalized Spatial Panel Data Model With Serial Correlation, Badi H. Baltagi, Long Liu

Center for Policy Research

This paper considers the generalized spatial panel data model with serial correlation proposed by Lee and Yu (2012) which encompasses a lot of the spatial panel data models considered in the literature, and derives the best linear unbiased predictor (BLUP) for that model. This in turn provides valuable BLUP for several spatial panel models as special cases.
