Cognitive Model Of Trust Dynamics Predicts Human Behavior Within And Between Two Games Of Strategic Interaction With Computerized Confederate Agents, Michael G. Collins, Ion Juvina, Kevin A. Gluck Feb 2016

Cognitive Model Of Trust Dynamics Predicts Human Behavior Within And Between Two Games Of Strategic Interaction With Computerized Confederate Agents, Michael G. Collins, Ion Juvina, Kevin A. Gluck

Psychology Faculty Publications

When playing games of strategic interaction, such as iterated Prisoner's Dilemma and iterated Chicken Game, people exhibit specific within-game learning (e.g., learning a game's optimal outcome) as well as transfer of learning between games (e.g., a game's optimal outcome occurring at a higher proportion when played after another game). The reciprocal trust players develop during the first game is thought to mediate transfer of learning effects. Recently, a computational cognitive model using a novel trust mechanism has been shown to account for human behavior in both games, including the transfer between games. We present the results of a study in …

Making Reference Personal: Student And Faculty Outreach Through Personal Research Sessions, Jennifer L.A. Whelan

Staff publications

While academic reference desks are seeing fewer visitors, the information environment is becoming increasingly complex. We know that students (and faculty) continue to have higher-level research needs that they are not bringing to traditional service points. At the same time, academic librarians often find themselves struggling to provide sustainable and meaningful research support. How can we reach a critical mass of students, while also respecting not only our own workloads but also those of faculty increasingly pressed for instructional time? The libraries at College of the Holy Cross are working to meet this challenge with a consultation-based Personal Research Session …

Visual Search Of Mooney Faces, Jessica E. Goold, Ming Meng Feb 2016

Visual Search Of Mooney Faces, Jessica E. Goold, Ming Meng

Dartmouth Scholarship

Faces spontaneously capture attention. However, which special attributes of a face underlie this effect is unclear. To address this question, we investigate how gist information, specific visual properties and differing amounts of experience with faces affect the time required to detect a face. Three visual search experiments were conducted investigating the rapidness of human observers to detect Mooney face images. Mooney images are two-toned, ambiguous images. They were used in order to have stimuli that maintain gist information but limit low-level image properties. Results from the experiments show: (1) Although upright Mooney faces were searched inefficiently, they were detected more …

Research Brief: "Three Generations, Three Wars: African American Veterans", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This study addresses the gap in literature on the African American perspective of veteran's experiences during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Research found that the interviewed men reported racist experiences, and also found they perceived service to the country aided their growth as men and as activists. Although African American service members were essential to the U.S. war effort, official accounts of their service are often excluded or misreported, and would benefit from policymakers using the narrative experiences of veterans to continue to introduce policies and programs that encourage diversity. Researchers are encouraged to continue …

Optimal Tilts, Malcom Baker, Terence C. Burnham, Ryan Taliaferro Feb 2016

Optimal Tilts, Malcom Baker, Terence C. Burnham, Ryan Taliaferro

ESI Working Papers

We examine the optimal weighting of four characteristic tilts in US equity markets over the period from 1968 through 2014. We define a “tilt” as a positive-Sharpe-ratio, characteristicbased portfolio strategy that requires relatively low annual turnover and a “trade” as a characteristic-based portfolio strategy that requires relatively high annual turnover and liquidity demands. Size is a tilt, because of its very low turnover; high frequency reversal is a trade. This dichotomy is necessary to make practical use of Fama-French style factor regressions. Unlike low-turnover tilts, a full history of transaction costs and an estimate of capacity is critical to determine …

A Mendelian Randomization Study Of Testosterone And Cognition In Men, Jie Zhao, Tai Hing Lam, Chaoqiang Jiang, Stacey S. Cherny, Bin Liu, Kar Keung Cheng, Weisen Zhang, Gabriel M. Leung, C Mary Schooling Feb 2016

A Mendelian Randomization Study Of Testosterone And Cognition In Men, Jie Zhao, Tai Hing Lam, Chaoqiang Jiang, Stacey S. Cherny, Bin Liu, Kar Keung Cheng, Weisen Zhang, Gabriel M. Leung, C Mary Schooling

Publications and Research

Testosterone replacement for older men is increasingly common, with some observations suggesting a protective effect on cognitive function. We examined the association of endogenous testosterone with cognitive function among older men in a Mendelian randomization study using a separate-sample instrumental variable (SSIV) analysis estimator to minimize confounding and reverse causality. A genetic score predicting testosterone was developed in 289 young Chinese men from Hong Kong, based on selected testosterone-related single nucleotide polymorphisms (rs10046, rs1008805 and rs1256031). The association of genetically predicted testosterone with delayed 10-word recall score and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score was assessed at baseline and follow-up using …

Counterinsurgency In Yemen: Assessing Operations Decisive Storm, Restoring Hope, And Golden Arrow, Curtis Hanson

Capstone and Graduation Projects

This project provides a comprehensive assessment of the counter-insurgency (COIN) operations being conducted against the Huthis. Specifically, how effective the Arab coalition’s Operation Decisive Storm, Operation Restoring Hope, and Operation Golden Arrow have been in achieving their stated goals and common COIN principles. The 2011 International Security Assistance Forces’ (ISAF) assessment paradigm is used in evaluating four domains of each operation. The four domains are security, governance, socio-economics, and relations-partnerships. The chosen indicators provide enough specificity to create a comprehensive assessment on both operational and campaign levels. The assessments of each operation show that the socio-economic and governance domains need …

AΒ40 Reduces P-Glycoprotein At The Blood-Brain Barrier Through The Ubiquitin-Proteasome Pathway, Anika M. S. Hartz, Yu Zhong, Andrea Wolf, Harry Levine Iii, David S. Miller, Björn Bauer

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Failure to clear amyloid-β (Aβ) from the brain is in part responsible for Aβ brain accumulation in Alzheimer's disease (AD). A critical protein for clearing Aβ across the blood–brain barrier is the efflux transporter P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in the luminal plasma membrane of the brain capillary endothelium. P-gp is reduced at the blood–brain barrier in AD, which has been shown to be associated with Aβ brain accumulation. However, the mechanism responsible for P-gp reduction in AD is not well understood. Here we focused on identifying critical mechanistic steps involved in reducing P-gp in AD. We …

Introducing An Automated Subject Classifier, Pru Mitchell, Tine Grimston, Robert Parkes Feb 2016

Introducing An Automated Subject Classifier, Pru Mitchell, Tine Grimston, Robert Parkes

Information Management

The library community understands the value of controlled vocabularies in enhancing resource discovery. There is however ongoing tension between that value and the cost of maintaining and applying specialist vocabularies. This paper presents the outcomes of a 2014-15 trial of automated subject indexing at the Australian Council for Educational Research. The integration of a machine learning classification tool has resulted in streamlined workflows and increased use of machine-readable data. Insights were gained into the decisions human indexers make in using a controlled vocabulary, and into the importance of quality abstracts and metadata.

Victim Ambiguity: Bystander Intervention And Sexual Assault In The College Drinking Scene, Brandie Pugh, Holly Ningard, Thomas Vander Ven, Leah C. Butler Feb 2016

Victim Ambiguity: Bystander Intervention And Sexual Assault In The College Drinking Scene, Brandie Pugh, Holly Ningard, Thomas Vander Ven, Leah C. Butler

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Alcohol-related sexual assault is the most common form of sexual victimization on college campuses. Bystander intervention has been suggested as effective in preventing sexual assault, but its usefulness in sexual assaults that involve alcohol in particular has not yet been examined. The current study draws from intensive interviews with 30 undergraduates at a large Midwestern university to understand how students’ perceptions about sexual victimization and alcohol use affect their bystander behavior. Findings suggest that in alcohol-involved situations, the ambiguity of whether the woman is at risk and her perceived worthiness are significant barriers to intervention. Policy implications are discussed.
