Explaining The Fixed Cost Component Of Discounting: The Importance Of Students' Liquidity Constraints, Andrew G. Meyer
Explaining The Fixed Cost Component Of Discounting: The Importance Of Students' Liquidity Constraints, Andrew G. Meyer
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
Utilizing experimental data on choices over real monetary rewards made by university students, we provide evidence that two measures of liquidity, income and employment status, significantly explain differences in patterns of discounting. We find an average fixed cost component of discounting in the range of $5 for unemployed students and near $0 for employed students. An increase in annual disposable income of $1000 decreases the fixed cost component of discounting by approximately $0.20 to $0.25. These findings can help resolve the puzzle that some studies in the literature find evidence of present-bias and magnitude effects and some do not.
Discrimination In Mortgage Lending: Evidence From A Correspondence Experiment, Andrew R. Hanson, Zackary Hawley, Hal Martin, Bo Liu
Discrimination In Mortgage Lending: Evidence From A Correspondence Experiment, Andrew R. Hanson, Zackary Hawley, Hal Martin, Bo Liu
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
We design and implement an experimental test for differential response by mortgage loan originators (MLOs) to requests for information about loans. Our e-mail correspondence experiment is designed to analyze differential treatment by client race and credit score. Our results show net discrimination by 1.8% of MLOs through non-response. We also find that MLOs offer more details about loans and are more likely to send follow up correspondence to whites. The effect of being African American on MLO response is equivalent to the effect of having a credit score that is 71 points lower.
Local Labor Markets And The Federal Earned Income Tax Credit, Andrew R. Hanson, Zackary Hawley
Local Labor Markets And The Federal Earned Income Tax Credit, Andrew R. Hanson, Zackary Hawley
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which offers relief from federal income-tax payments for a targeted group of taxpayers, is based on national income limits and the presence of dependent children. Benefits determinations are made with a flat national maximum level of assistance. The EITC is extended to nearly 29 million families and costs the U.S. Treasury about $64 billion annually.
While the EITC uses national parameters to determine eligibility and benefits, the U.S. labor force is dispersed among a series of disparate labor markets in metropolitan areas. Each market within each geography has unique characteristics, with vastly different wage …

International Student Adaptability: The Influence Of The Sino-American 1+2+1 Dual Degree Program, Michael C. Rose
International Student Adaptability: The Influence Of The Sino-American 1+2+1 Dual Degree Program, Michael C. Rose
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
An increasing reliance on expatriate employees makes it critical that multinational organizations make a concerted effort to facilitate the successful transition of employees from foreign cultures. The parallels between the experience of expatriate employees and international students suggests that the results of research investigating issues of cross‑cultural adaptability that are conducted in academic settings should generalize to the workplace. The current study investigated the influence of the Sino‑American 1+2+1 Dual Degree Program on the cross‑cultural adaptability, acculturation, and withdrawal intentions of international students. It was hypothesized that participants in the 1+2+1 program would demonstrate higher levels of psychological adaptability and …

Social Networking: Creating A Society Of Narcissists Or Helping People Reach Self-Actualization?, Kris E. Munakash
Social Networking: Creating A Society Of Narcissists Or Helping People Reach Self-Actualization?, Kris E. Munakash
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Social networking sites (SNSs) are growing in popularity and diversity. Prior research has shown that SNSs use is correlated with various personality traits including narcissism. To date, no work has examined the association between SNSs use and self-actualization. Given the potential overlap of narcissism and self-actualization, the goal of the present study was to first examine the conceptual overlap of these two intrapersonal characteristics. We then sought to examine the associations between SNSs use, narcissism, and self-actualization with an expectation that self-actualization would mediate the association between SNSs use and narcissism. One thousand six hundred and four adults completed an …

Shared Risk Factors For Mood-, Eating-, And Weight-Related Health Outcomes, A. B. Goldschmidt, M. Wall, T-H. J. Choo, Carolyn Becker, D. Neumark-Sztainer
Psychology Faculty Research
Objective: Given the overlap among depressive symptoms, disordered eating, and overweight, identifying shared risk factors for these conditions may inform public health interventions. This study aimed to examine cross-sectional and prospective relationships among these 3 conditions, and identify potential shared eating-related and psychosocial variable risk factors (i.e., body dissatisfaction, dieting, teasing experiences).
Method: A population-based sample (n = 1,902) self-reported depressive symptoms, disordered eating (binge eating, extreme weight control behaviors), weight status, and several putative risk factors (body satisfaction, dieting frequency, weight-related teasing) at 5-year intervals spanning early/middle adolescence, middle adolescence/early young adulthood, and early/middle young adulthood.
Results: There was …

Differential Health And Social Needs Of Older Adults Waitlisted For Public Housing Or Housing Choice Vouchers, Paula C. Carder, Gretchen Luhr, Jacklyn Nicole Kohon
Institute on Aging Publications
Affordable housing is an important form of income security for low-income older persons. This article describes characteristics of older persons waitlisted for either public housing or a housing choice voucher (HCV) (previously Section 8) in Portland, Oregon. 358 persons (32% response rate) completed a mailed survey with questions about demographics, health and housing status, food insecurity, and preference for housing with services. Findings indicate that many waitlisted older persons experienced homelessness or housing instability, poor health, high hospital use, and food insecurity. Public housing applicants were significantly more likely to report lower incomes, homelessness, and food insecurity than HCV applicants. …

Governing Countries: A Theory Of Subnational Regime Variation, Kelly Mcmann, John Gerring, Matthew Maguire, Michael Coppedge, Staffan Lindberg
Governing Countries: A Theory Of Subnational Regime Variation, Kelly Mcmann, John Gerring, Matthew Maguire, Michael Coppedge, Staffan Lindberg
Faculty Publications, School of Management
Studies of a small number of countries have revealed that both democratic and non-democratic subnational governments can exist within a single country. However, these works have neither demonstrated how common subnational regime variation is nor explained why some countries are more prone to it. This paper does both. Using Varieties of Democracy subnational data for countries of the world from 1900 to 2012, we show that subnational regime variation exists throughout all regions, in both unitary and federal states, and in both the present and past. The paper also demonstrates theoretically and empirically how social heterogeneity and factors undermining the …

A Method And A Case Study For The Selection Of The Best Available Tool For Mobile Device Forensics Using Decision Analysis, Shahzad Saleem, Oliver Popov, Ibrahim Baggili
Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
The omnipresence of mobile devices (or small scale digital devices - SSDD) and more importantly the utility of their associated applications for our daily activities, which range from financial transactions to learning, and from entertainment to distributed social presence, create an abundance of digital evidence for each individual. Some of the evidence may be a result of illegal activities that need to be identified, understood and eventually prevented in the future. There are numerous tools for acquiring and analyzing digital evidence extracted from mobile devices. The diversity of SSDDs, types of evidence generated and the number of tools used to …

3.14 Rio 2016 And The Birth Of Brazilian Transparency, Andrew B. Spalding
Law Faculty Publications
Brazil’s modern democracy is but three decades old. With the Brazilian people now taking to the streets in protest at public corruption, the government is enacting new laws and learning to effectively enforce them. The nation is thus feeling the growing pains of an emergent commitment to transparency. In this, the window between Brazil’s hosting of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics, it is timely to ask what the spotlight of these two events has revealed about the nation’s anti-corruption measures. How is the government responding to exposed corruption risk? Will the Olympics ultimately make good …

Trust Building With Chinese Host Country Nationals, Fenny Ang, Hwee Hoon Tan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Integrating the literature on trust building and cultural intelligence, the purpose of this paper is to understand how expatriate managers build trust with their host country nationals (HCNs) in China. Qualitative data collected via extensive interviews with 12 expatriate managers and 34 HCNs from seven multinational companies in Shanghai. The authors find that expatriate managers and HCN managers build trust via competence/ability at the onset. The trust relationship becomes stronger over time with the development of affect-based trust via cultural intelligence of the expatriate managers. Implications for theory and practice following the results are discussed. This study used the cultural …

The Groundwork For Successful Cohort- Based Fiscal Capacity-Building: An Evaluation Of The Strengthening Financial Management Initiative, Nancy Devine
The Foundation Review
This article is based on the findings of an evaluation of The Wallace Foundation’s Strengthening Financial Management initiative, which show that it is possible, with well-designed training and support, to enhance the ability of nonprofit leaders to strategically manage their resources for long-term sustainability and programmatic quality.
The initiative tested two models of capacity building – a relatively high-intensity approach and a lighter, though still substantive, model. While the two shared a common core of content, the amount of resources provided in each of the two models was dramatically different.
In addition to the two main findings – that building …
Assessing A Foundation’S Contribution To Public-Policy Change: A New Framework, Barbara Masters, Gigi Barsoum, Sandra Martinez, Fatima Angeles
Assessing A Foundation’S Contribution To Public-Policy Change: A New Framework, Barbara Masters, Gigi Barsoum, Sandra Martinez, Fatima Angeles
The Foundation Review
This article presents a framework for evaluating a foundation’s role in complex policy-change efforts, based on a 10-year retrospective evaluation of The California Wellness Foundation’s grantmaking in public policy.
After examining more than 25 policy outcomes associated with the foundation’s grantmaking priorities, three dimensions of contribution emerged: the role of its grantees relative to other organizations, the prominence of its role and funding relative to other funders or donors, and the degree of alignment between the policy change and the foundation’s policy goals.
The experience of The California Wellness Foundation illustrates that there is no single approach to supporting work …

The Philanthropic Collaborative For A Healthy Georgia: Building A Public-Private Partnership With Pooled Funding, Karen Minyard, Mary Ann Phillips, Susan Baker
The Foundation Review
This article explores the origins and structure of the Philanthropic Collaborative for a Healthy Georgia and examines its first initiative: to encourage the development of school health programs in Georgia public schools serving low-income children without access to health services. Over the last decade, the collaborative has brought together more than 20 private, community, and corporate foundations to respond to the state's health-related challenges. One of its objectives is to provide a structured learning framework that enables foundations to be more informed and effective in their own grantmaking. The collaborative also pursues opportunities for foundations to collectively fund strategic initiatives …

Foundations Supporting Research And Innovation In Europe: Results And Lessons From The Eufori Study, Barbara Gouwenberg, Danique Ali, Barry Hoolwerf, Rene Bekkers, Theo Schuyt, Jan Smit
The Foundation Review
This article presents the most important results of the European Foundation for Research and Innovation Study, the first study to map the roles and collective contributions of Europe’s large, heterogeneous, and fragmented sector of research and innovation foundations.
The study, based on a review of about 1,000 foundations, estimates that they contribute at least $6.4 billion a year to research and innovation in Europe. While this estimate shows that the contribution is quite substantial, its economic weight is modest compared to that of government, the business sector, and other actors in the domain of research and innovation.
European foundations prefer …

Enhancing Funders’ And Advocates’ Effectiveness: The Processes Shaping Collaborative Advocacy For Health System Accountability In South Africa, Barbara Klugman, Waasila Jassat
The Foundation Review
This article describes the roles of five advocacy groups that built collaborative initiatives to address the collapsing health system in South Africa.
The findings presented are based on retrospective reviews of annual reports, organizational evaluations, interviews, and focus group discussions with each of four participating organizations and existing literature on the fifth.
The key findings, for both advocacy groups shaping alliance strategies and for funders, are that flexible funding and a shared value system among groups with diverse capacities, constituencies, and reputational resources is a good approach for enabling adaptive and innovative strategies for holding the public sector accountable.
