Formal Controls, Neighborhood Disadvantage, And Violent Crime In U.S. Cities: Examining (Un)Intended Consequences, Allison Martin, Emily M. Wright, Benjamin Steiner
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Purpose This study examines the intended and unintended effects of formal social controls on violent crime within and across U.S. cities. Methods Using data from the National Neighborhood Crime Study, we assess whether greater police arrest activity and jail incarceration risk are associated with lower violent crime rates across cities. We also investigate whether greater use of these formal social controls exacerbates the relationship between extreme neighborhood disadvantage and violent crime. Results Results from multilevel analyses show that some formal controls (jail incarceration risk) reduce violent crime across cities, but other formal controls (police arrest activity) amplify the relationship between …
The Effect Of Technology On Therapy Alliance, Ryan F. Birch
The Effect Of Technology On Therapy Alliance, Ryan F. Birch
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
The therapeutic alliance is considered a demonstrably effective variable for therapy outcomes independent of treatment type, yet the extent to which it may be affected by technology is vague. Similarly, studies examining how technology alters the therapeutic relationship in a traditional face-to-face context are sparse and inconclusive. The robust association between psychotherapy alliance and therapy outcomes combined with the lack of conclusive evidence concerning how technology influences this calls for more research on the relationship between alliance and technology. The current study examines how clients’ perceptions of therapy alliance over the course of 10 sessions change with the administration of …
Professionals And Soldiers: Measuring Professionalism In The Thai Military, Punchada Sirivunnabood, Jacob Ricks
Professionals And Soldiers: Measuring Professionalism In The Thai Military, Punchada Sirivunnabood, Jacob Ricks
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Thailand's military has recently reclaimed its role as the central pillar of Thai politics. This raises an enduring question in civil-military relations: why do people with guns choose to obey those without guns? One of the most prominent theories in both academic and policy circles is Samuel Huntington's argument that professional militaries do not become involved in politics. We engage this premise in the Thai context. Utilizing data from a new and unique survey of 569 Thai military officers as well as results from focus groups and interviews with military officers, we evaluate the attitudes of Thai servicemen and develop …

A key strength ofin-depth interviews and ethnography is obtaining textured insights into socialphenomenon. Yet, many qualitative researchers try to invoke the reliability ofquantitative methods by shrouding themselves in numbers as a way to legitimizetheir work. They offer up the number of interviews, the number of hours, weeks, and years spent in the field and they propose bigger and bigger samples. Evenas qualitative researchers assert that they have carried out in-depthqualitative research, they often revert to the language of quantitativeresearch to justify the legitimacy of the work. The nod to numbers is a way ofclaiming trustworthiness and, importantly, scientific expertise, which isusually …

Digital Transformation In Singapore’S Mice Industry, Candy Mak, Poon King Wang
Digital Transformation In Singapore’S Mice Industry, Candy Mak, Poon King Wang
Asian Management Insights
When business ground to a pandemic-induced halt in February 2020, the Singapore Association of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers (SACEOS) immediately got to work to keep the country’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) industry afloat. In the first month, it worked with the authorities to triage the situation. Within eight months, they produced a roadmap for a new hybrid business model which the rest of the industry could adopt. Less than two months later, they witnessed the new model being deployed on the global stage at the 2020 Singapore Fintech Festival (SFF) in December, which was broadcast live …
Balika: Empowering Girls To Delay Child Marriage In Bangladesh, Sajeda Amin
Balika: Empowering Girls To Delay Child Marriage In Bangladesh, Sajeda Amin
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The BALIKA project evaluated whether three skills-building approaches to empower girls can effectively delay the age at marriage among girls aged 12–18 in parts of Bangladesh where child marriage rates are at their highest. BALIKA results show that programs that educate girls, build their skills for modern livelihoods and engage their communities can delay child marriage and produce better health, educational and social outcomes for girls. This brief summarizes the project's endline results.

Chronic Drinking During Adolescence Predisposes The Adult Rat For Continued Heavy Drinking: Neurotrophin And Behavioral Adaptation After Long-Term, Continuous Ethanol Exposure, Gina M. Fernandez, William N. Stewart, Lisa M. Savage
Psychology Faculty Scholarship
Previous research has found that adolescent ethanol (EtOH) exposure alters drug seeking behaviors, cognition and neuroplasticity. Using male Sprague Dawley rats, differences in spatial working memory, non-spatial discrimination learning and behavioral flexibility were explored as a function of age at the onset (mid-adolescent vs. adult) of chronic EtOH exposure (CET). Concentrations of mature brain-derived neurotrophic factor (mBDNF) and betanerve growth factor (beta-NGF) in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus were also assessed at different time-points: during CET, following acute abstinence (48-hrs), and after protracted abstinence (6-8 wks). Our results revealed that an adolescent onset of CET leads to increased EtOH consumption …

Brazil’s modern democracy is but three decades old. With the Brazilian people now taking to the streets in protest at public corruption, the government is enacting new laws and learning to effectively enforce them. The nation is thus feeling the growing pains of an emergent commitment to transparency. In this, the window between Brazil’s hosting of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics, it is timely to ask what the spotlight of these two events has revealed about the nation’s anti-corruption measures. How is the government responding to exposed corruption risk? Will the Olympics ultimately make good …

Nakba Day: The Ephemera Of Martyrdom, Philip Hopper
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
Nakba Commemoration Day for Palestinians is the counterpart of Israel’s Independence Day, which takes place one week earlier. These days respectively mark the forcible expulsions of Palestinians from the nascent state of Israel and the declaration of statehood by Israel. One tribe’s independence is another tribe’s disaster. One person’s freedom fighter is another person’s terrorist. Parallel yet inverted narratives are everywhere in history and the present, from Manifest Destiny to the Ukraine, the Sudan, Northern Ireland and elsewhere today.

Commemorating The Voting Rights Act Of 1965, Michael Blackwell Reverend
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was the pinnacle of the ten-year struggle to liberate African Americans from the shackles of slavery and Jim Crow segregation. Although the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution gave black men the right to vote way back in 1870, coupled with the 19th Amendment that gave women, including black women, the right in 1920, racism still abounded at election offices across the country—particularly, but not exclusively, among the Southern states. American Negroes, if you will, had been struggling for free access to the polls for decades, when major organizations such as the National Association …

Non-Oil Revenue Buoyancy And Elasticity: Implications For Revenue Generation In Nigeria, B. Gaiya, A.A. Ononugbo-Ikenna, K. Ajala
Economic and Financial Review
The paper employs annual time series data on real government tax revenue components from 1981-2014 to endogenously determine the level of non-oil revenue buoyancy and elasticity and its implication for revenue generation in Nigeria. A partitioning approach to determining tax buoyancy and elasticity is employed to address these objectives. The study found that with the exception of the Company Income Tax, an inelastic tax structure exists in Nigeria for the period under review. The proxy bases had similar results in terms of their responsiveness to the tax system. There were also evidences that the discretionary measures taken during the study …
Economic Growth, Poverty And Income Inequality Matrix In Nigeria: A Further Investigation, H. O. Okafor
Economic Growth, Poverty And Income Inequality Matrix In Nigeria: A Further Investigation, H. O. Okafor
Economic and Financial Review
This paper examined the existing relationship among economic growth, poverty and income inequality in Nigeria. Using the Vector Auto-regressive (VAR) model and the Engle-Granger technique to test for the causality existing among the variables, the results revealed that economic growth had no impact on poverty reduction and income distribution in Nigeria due its non-inclusive nature. There was, however, evidence of a unidirectional causality, running from income inequality to increased poverty. This implied that inequality would lead to increase in poverty in Nigeria. Therefore, the paper recommended that government should develop stronger economic institutions that are capable of reorganising the productive …

Asymptotic Power Of The Sphericity Test Under Weak And Strong Factors In A Fixed Effects Panel Data Model, Badi H. Baltagi, Chihwa Kao, Fa Wang
Asymptotic Power Of The Sphericity Test Under Weak And Strong Factors In A Fixed Effects Panel Data Model, Badi H. Baltagi, Chihwa Kao, Fa Wang
Center for Policy Research
This paper studies the asymptotic power for the sphericity test in a fixed effect panel data model proposed by Baltagi, Feng and Kao (2011), (JBFK). This is done under the alternative hypotheses of weak and strong factors. By weak factors, we mean that the Euclidean norm of the vector of the factor loadings is O(1). By strong factors, we mean that the Euclidean norm of the vector of factor loadings is O(pn), where n is the number of individuals in the panel. To derive the limiting distribution of JBFK under the alternative, we first derive the limiting distribution of its …

Factors Influencing Producer Propensity For Data Sharing & Opinions Regarding Precision Agriculture And Big Farm Data, Michael H. Castle, Bradley D. Lubben, Joe D. Luck
Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature
With its tremendous success by notable companies in varying industries, “big data” has become a hard-to-miss phrase and many believe its usage in agriculture is the future of the industry. However, the potential benefits of using big data come with just as many challenges, ranging from not knowing how to make use of it, to the debate over who owns and has access to it. A survey asking for producers’ opinions on precision agriculture technologies and big farm data was distributed to a sample of agricultural producers across Nebraska. A Poisson regression was used to determine the factors influencing propensity …

Empirical Estimation Of Optimal International Reserves For Nigeria: The Sudden Stop Model, G.K. Sanni, T.S. Olusegun, Z. Sani
Economic and Financial Review
The study examined the issue of optimum external reserves for Nigeria during 2010 - 2014, using Jeanne and Ranciere (2006) and Goncalves (2007) sudden stop model approach. The study showed that resident foreign currency deposit accounted for over 90 per cent of the total foreign currency deposit, while non-resident foreign currency deposit accounted for the remaining. The result of the model suggested that external reserves were adequate in 2010 but beyond that period, it was far below optimal level. On average, the optimum external reserves were around 15.7 per cent of GDP in the past four years, translating to US$54.52 …

The Impact Of Lending Rate On The Manufacturing Sector In Nigeria, D.B. Akpan, D.J. Yilkudi, D. C. Opiah
Economic and Financial Review
The study investigates the impact of lending rate on output of the manufacturing subsector using the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) and annual data from 1981- 2014. The empirical results indicated that high lending rate had negative impact on manufacturing output in the long-run. This suggests that increase in lending rate undermines manufacturing output, thus retarding growth in the real sector. Specifically, the estimates revealed that a 1.0 per cent increase in lending rate reduces manufacturing output by 0.03 per cent. The study, therefore, recommends the implementation of investment friendly policies that narrows the lending rate by the deposit money …

Manifestations Of Overarousal Account For The Association Between Cognitive Anxiety Sensitivity And Suicidal Ideation, Megan L. Rogers, Raymond P. Tucker, Keyne C. Law, Matthew S. Michaels, Michael D. Anestis, Thomas E. Joiner
Faculty Publications
Background: Recent evidence suggests an association between cognitive anxiety sensitivity and suicidal ideation. Cognitive anxiety sensitivity has also been implicated as a precursor to various forms of overarousal. These manifestations of overarousal (i.e., agitation, insomnia, nightmares, and anger) may account for the association between cognitive anxiety sensitivity and suicidal ideation.
Methods: In Study 1, undergraduate students selectively sampled for recent suicidal ideation completed all measures online. In Study 2, clinical outpatients completed all measures prior to their initial intake appointments at a psychology clinic.
Results: Study 1 demonstrated that agitation and insomnia individually and jointly accounted for …

A Model Of The Effects Of Deforestation On Local Climate In The North Cascades, Monica R. H. Jasper
Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones
Changes in areal extent of land cover types may lead to alterations in the surface energy budget that contribute to anthropogenic climate forcing. This study examines the effects of deforestation in the Cascade Range on local temperature. Temperature sensors were installed in 14 forest stands, taking measurements for one year. Estimated tree age, circumference, and species were recorded to calculate stand density index. Satellite imagery was used to calculate shade fraction from spectral mixture analysis, which is a proxy for canopy structure and density. These data were used to construct seasonal cycles of temperature to model variation with stand density …
