On The Meaning And Measurement Of Maximization, Nathan Norem Cheek , '15, Barry Schwartz
On The Meaning And Measurement Of Maximization, Nathan Norem Cheek , '15, Barry Schwartz
Psychology Faculty Works
Building on Herbert Simon’s critique of rational choice theory, Schwartz et al. (2002) proposed that when making choices, some individuals — maximizers — search extensively through many alternatives with the goal of making the best choice, whereas others — satisficers — search only until they identify an option that meets their standards, which they then choose. They developed the Maximization Scale (MS) to measure individual differences in maximization, and a substantial amount of research has now examined maximization using the MS, painting a picture of maximizers that is generally negative. Recently, however, several researchers have criticized the MS, and almost …

Plant Community Composition And Structure Monitoring For Scotts Bluff National Monument, 2011-2015 Summary Report, Isabel W. Ashton, Christopher J. Davis
United States National Park Service: Publications
Executive Summary
The Northern Great Plains Inventory & Monitoring Program and Fire Effects Program have been monitoring vegetation in Scotts Bluff National Monument for over 18 years. While methods have changed slightly, this report summarizes data from over 80 locations from 1998-2015. Below, we list the questions we asked using these data and provide a summarized answer. For more details see the full report. A summary of the current condition (2011-2015) and trends (based on 1988-2015) in plant communities at Scotts Bluff is found in Table ES-1.
1. What is the current status of plant community composition and structure of …

Exploring Diversified Performance Indicators For Evaluating Non-Urbanized Transit Program Outcomes, Eunice V. Akoto
Exploring Diversified Performance Indicators For Evaluating Non-Urbanized Transit Program Outcomes, Eunice V. Akoto
Journal of Public Transportation
Non-urbanized (rural) transit goals include the ability to use available government funds to provide adequate and efficient transportation services while increasing mobility and accessibility. However, outcomes of these goals cannot be examined exclusively with the “traditional” transit performance indicators that are more conducive to urban systems. This study explores diversified indicators—namely, efficiency, effectiveness, and mobility constructs for evaluating program outcomes of non-urbanized transit systems—using Mississippi’s Section 5311 program as the case. The study examined how Section 5311 providers met their program goals during the implementation of the Safe, Accountable, Flexible and Efficient Transportation Equity Act—A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) using …

Petrography, The Tar Sands Paradise, And The Medium Of Modernity, Warren Cariou, Jon Gordon
The Goose
This article engages with the artistic practice of petrography, the art of creating photographic images through the action of sunlight upon bitumen, the heavy-oil material that is the source of the petroleum in the Athabasca tar sands. It presents several examples of petrographs that document the process of industrial bitumen mining itself. Further, it theorizes the ways in which both the process of producing petrographs and the act of engaging with them as a viewer require a degree of collaboration normally absent from our consumption of petroleum as the medium of modernity. A key argument of the paper is the …

Branches Over Ripples: A Waterside Journal, Brian Bartlett
Branches Over Ripples: A Waterside Journal, Brian Bartlett
The Goose
Branches Over Ripples: A Waterside Journal is a fifty-entry plein-air writing project drafted between April 2013 and October 2014 by various bodies of water—rivers, brooks, lakes, bays, marshes, waterfalls, a vernal pond, a Japanese koi pond. Most of the writing was done in Nova Scotia locations, but some entries were drafted in New Brunswick, Montreal, Missouri, Manhattan, and London, England. I often walked from an hour to four or five hours, then sat down on bare earth, grass, sand, stone, or wood, and wrote, keeping attuned to my surroundings but also letting my mind and memory wander.

What Does It Mean To Teach Interpretively?, Jennifer Dodge, Richard Holtzman, Merlijn Van Hulst, Dvora Yanow
History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles
The ‘interpretive turn’ has gained traction as a research approach in recent decades in the empirical social sciences. While the contributions of interpretive research and interpretive research methods are clear, we wonder: Does an interpretive perspective lend itself to – or even demand – a particular style of teaching? This question was at the heart of a roundtable discussion we organised at the 2014 Interpretive Policy Analysis (IPA) International Conference. This essay reports on the contours of the discussion, with a focus on our reflections upon what it might mean to teach ‘interpretively’. Prior to outlining these, we introduce the …
Weight-Based Rejection Sensitivity: Scale Development And Implications For Well-Being, Kimberly Mcclure Brenchley, Diane M. Quinn
Weight-Based Rejection Sensitivity: Scale Development And Implications For Well-Being, Kimberly Mcclure Brenchley, Diane M. Quinn
Psychology Faculty/Staff Publications
We integrated theories of social stigma and rejection sensitivity to develop a new construct for understanding the effects of day-to-day experiences of interpersonal weight stigma: weight-based rejection sensitivity (W-RS), or a tendency to anxiously expect weight-based rejection. We created a new scale to measure W-RS. Studies 1 and 2 together established the scale as valid and reliable in a college student population. Study 3 examined the outcomes and predictive validity of W-RS by testing the effects of W-RS longitudinally across college students’ first semester. Those who were high in W-RS were found to be at additional risk for compromised psychological …
Factors Influencing The Adoption Of Precision Agriculture Technologies By Nebraska Producers, Michael H. Castle, Bradley D. Lubben, Joe D. Luck
Factors Influencing The Adoption Of Precision Agriculture Technologies By Nebraska Producers, Michael H. Castle, Bradley D. Lubben, Joe D. Luck
Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature
An ever-increasing world population and increasingly-volatile commodity prices have charged producers with the task of becoming more efficient. To combat this, precision agriculture technologies aimed at increasing production efficiency are continually being developed, but their adoption is not yet widespread. A survey regarding the usage of these technologies was distributed to a sample of row crop producers across the state of Nebraska and a Poisson regression was used to determine the factors influencing adoption. Results of the study indicate that larger, more tech-savvy producers and those using irrigation are more likely to adopt a higher number of precision agriculture technologies, …
