How I Learned To Build Bridges Of Understanding With 5 Houses, John Johnson
How I Learned To Build Bridges Of Understanding With 5 Houses, John Johnson
HSU unConference
Five Houses is a basic visual representation of diversity. This simple concept has helped me cultivate empathy and prepare students and others to engage with each other in a more open and receptive manner. By introducing Five Houses into your classroom and workshop spaces, you too can build bridges of understanding.
Session D-2: Science And The Feminine: A Cultural Examination, Robert Kiely
Session D-2: Science And The Feminine: A Cultural Examination, Robert Kiely
Professional Learning Day
This session will explore the treatment of the feminine in science and natural philosophy from Antiquity to the 20th century. We will examine different views of the female role in nature and generation, and trace the links between such views and the treatment of women in society. We will also study changing notions of the relationship between gender and mind, and we will consider how such views have affected the place of women in the scientific community.
Objecting (To) Infrastructure: Ecopolitics At The Ukrainian Ends Of The Danube, Tanya Richardson
Objecting (To) Infrastructure: Ecopolitics At The Ukrainian Ends Of The Danube, Tanya Richardson
Anthropology Faculty Publications
In southern Ukraine, two hydraulic infrastructures continue to exist despite environmentalist campaigns that have exposed them as fragile, broken or unprofitable. The Danube-Dnister Irrigation Project (DDIS), a Soviet mega-project that diverted water from the Danube and turned the Sasyk estuary into a reservoir, receives state funding despite a 1994 ban on its use for irrigation. The Bystre Shipping Canal, built in 2004 despite domestic and international opposition, is losing money but continues to operate. These cases exemplify the material politics of infrastructuring in which infrastructure is understood as an antagonistic process of assembling networks of humans and nonhumans rather than …

Symbolic Numerical Magnitude Processing Is As Important To Arithmetic As Phonological Awareness Is To Reading, Kiran Vanbinst, Daniel Ansari, Bert De Smedt
Symbolic Numerical Magnitude Processing Is As Important To Arithmetic As Phonological Awareness Is To Reading, Kiran Vanbinst, Daniel Ansari, Bert De Smedt
Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications
In this article, we tested, using a 1-year longitudinal design, whether symbolic numerical magnitude processing or children’s numerical representation of Arabic digits, is as important to arithmetic as phonological awareness is to reading. Children completed measures of symbolic comparison, phonological awareness, arithmetic, reading at the start of third grade and the latter two were retested at the start of fourth grade. Cross-sectional and longitudinal correlations indicated that symbolic comparison was a powerful domain-specific predictor of arithmetic and that phonological awareness was a unique predictor of reading. Crucially, the strength of these independent associations was not significantly different. This indicates that …

Inmate Education As A Service Learning Opportunity For Students: Preparation, Benefits, And Lessons Learned, Cheryl L. Meyer, Megan K. Harned, Amanda Schaad, Katherine Sunder, Judson Palmer, Christy Tinch

There is mounting evidence that prison inmates benefit from educational opportunities but may not be offered to them. In addition, when they are offered, priority is given to prisoners who will be released in the near future, and those serving long-term or life sentences are less likely to have access to classes. A service learning opportunity was created where students taught a life span development class to women serving long-term sentences. This article provides a guide to setting up the class while avoiding obstacles along the way. It also outlines benefits to students, inmates, supervising faculty, and society. In order …
Introduction To Rural Educational Leadership, Jeanne L. Surface
Introduction To Rural Educational Leadership, Jeanne L. Surface
Rural Futures Institute: Publications
Change generally emerges when the status quo no longer serves most people. It is at that point that different ideas take root and begin to direct the process of change. And where do the different ideas come from? Wendell Berry (1987) argued that they come from the periphery, which in the context of the 21st century, is the countryside. America’s educational system is not improving, and hasn’t been for decades. Despite the fact that the system flatlined with the advent of the standards and testing movement, the creation of standards and tests has reached a kind of fever pitch—with few …
Measuring Multi-Sector Contributions To Public Health Delivery Systems & Population Health, Glen P. Mays
Measuring Multi-Sector Contributions To Public Health Delivery Systems & Population Health, Glen P. Mays
Health Management and Policy Presentations
The National Longitudinal Survey of Public Health Systems has followed a nationally-representative cohort of U.S. communities since 1998 to measure the scope of public health activities implemented in each community and the range of organizations and sectors that contribute to each activity. With 16 years of follow-up observations, this survey allows us to study the effects of demographic, economic, and policy shocks on public health delivery systems, and estimate the health effects attributable to delivery system change.
Collaborating With Nonlibrary Faculty For Assessment And Improved Instruction, Holt Zaugg, Curtis Child
Collaborating With Nonlibrary Faculty For Assessment And Improved Instruction, Holt Zaugg, Curtis Child
Faculty Publications
Collaboration with other entities and individuals has long been a standard practice of libraries. Typically, these collaborations seek to reduce redundancies, save money, and support educational and research efforts. However, a new model of collaboration exists that both assists discipline-specific research practices and informs library procedures. This article reviews two collaborations between an assessment librarian and a sociology class. The collaborations are unique because the library is the focus of the collaboration, with sociology students being able to apply classroom learning in a real-world setting. Several suggestions are provided for best practices when endeavoring to use this type of collaboration …

Symptomatic Leadership: The Impact Of Changing Demographics On Global Business, Linda L. Ridley
Symptomatic Leadership: The Impact Of Changing Demographics On Global Business, Linda L. Ridley
Publications and Research
The past several decades have displayed a focus on diversity in the workplace throughout the corporate environment. Questions remain: has the effort been at all impactful – or, due to its symbolic nature, has it only been a distraction? What behaviors would have been better emphasized to achieve full participation and opportunity by all actors in a firm?
Considerable research has revealed that attempts at diversity are clumsy at best; and spurious at worst. [i] The challenge for firms has been to develop a “business case” for why those contributing groups represented by women and people of color should be …
Objective Research? Information Literacy Instruction Perspectives, Terry Dwain Robertson
Objective Research? Information Literacy Instruction Perspectives, Terry Dwain Robertson
Faculty Publications
Common understandings of “objective” research include values such as “factual” and “interpretive neutrality”. There is a growing consensus that the person, the “subject”, doing the research counts as much as if not more in the interpretive outcomes than the “facts” alone, and that “interpretive neutrality” is not possible.
The presentation offers an alternative framing of “objective research” as the grounded, intentional and savvy analysis of an “object” in conversation with a community of peers/experts for the purpose of creating knowledge.
Following Ferraris’ ontology, three classes of “objects” exist (1) Natural objects: exist whether or not a person notices them. Example: …
