Investigating Alternative Subsistence Strategies Among The Homeless Near Tampa, Florida, Matthew Peter Rooney
Investigating Alternative Subsistence Strategies Among The Homeless Near Tampa, Florida, Matthew Peter Rooney
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Modern homelessness is one of the most pressing social and political problems of our time. Several hundred thousand people experience homelessness in the United States each year, and the U.S. Department of Housing, which attempts to count those people, has admitted that their statistics are conservative estimates at best. A recent archaeological study (Zimmerman et al 2010) examining material culture associated with homeless communities in Indianapolis has suggested that those who are considered chronically homeless have generally abandoned wage labor and are instead pursuing urban foraging as a subsistence strategy. In order to better understand the structures of homeless communities, …
Powering The Planet: The Role Chemistry Plays In Solar Energy Technology, Amy M. Scott
Powering The Planet: The Role Chemistry Plays In Solar Energy Technology, Amy M. Scott
Climate Sustainability Lecture Series
Global energy demands are projected to double by 2050, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, and solar energy has the greatest potential as the most benign, universal resource for generating electricity. However, harnessing the solar energy efficiently and converting it towards useful forms of power that are compatible with our current infrastructure remains an elusive goal. Today’s solar energy utilization relies on silicon-based photovoltaic (PV) technology, which converts photon energy to electrical energy. The efficiency of these devices remains low (< 30%) and the cost of processing silicon and installing solar panels in homes makes PV uneconomical compared to the current price of electricity. Research efforts towards developing new inorganic and organic materials for thin film PV to replace silicon are currently underway. Organic materials are particularly interesting from the standpoint of developing simple, cheap materials that can be easily tailored for future PV devices. The future of solar energy utilization relies on developing solar paints for vehicles, solar shingles for rooftops, and spray-on solar ink for small device applications, but continued fundamental research is needed for decreasing cost and improving efficiency for next generation devices.
Adapting The Amazing Library Race: Using Problem-Based Learning In Library Orientations, Katelyn Angell, Katherine Boss
Adapting The Amazing Library Race: Using Problem-Based Learning In Library Orientations, Katelyn Angell, Katherine Boss
Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications
This paper describes a pilot adaptation of the Amazing Library Race (ALR), an academic library orientation designed to introduce new users to library resources and services. A total of 185 students in twelve classes participated in the pilot project, which the authors co-taught. Pedagogically, the ALR combines guided, problem-based learning concepts with key elements of gamification, including competition and reward motivation. It also addresses the learning outcomes of reducing library anxiety and providing general information about collections and services. A review of the literature used in the design of the race is included, as well as a description of the …

Extending The Institutional Repository To Include Undergraduate Research, Eleta Exline
University Library Scholarship
While a primary strategy of scholarly communication initiatives has been to encourage faculty participation in institutional repositories (IRs), with some process and workflow customization, IR participation can be successfully extended to undergraduate students, with benefits to both the student and institution. Drawing observations from the University of New Hampshire Library's work collecting undergraduate honors theses and other student research, this article discusses customization strategies for creating an effective workflow for student self-deposit using an iterative, feedback-based approach, and the benefits, challenges, and potential concerns of encouraging undergraduate participation in institutional repositories.

For the past ten years, the Archives and Preservation Unit at Minnesota State University, Mankato has been working with digital collections, but we lacked a formal digital preservation plan until the DigiVengers came to save the day. A small but mighty group, the DigiVengers used their super powers to draft a digital preservation plan using various magical gizmos, thing-ma-bobs, doohickeys, and extra-sensory perception gleaned from trial and error. The DigiVengers utilized lessons from conferences and training to harness the power of preservation. We don’t know our final destination yet, but join us as we share our journey with you. You …

The Anchor, Volume 129.20: March 16, 2016, Hope College
The Anchor: 2016
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Endogenous Competence And A Limit To The Condorcet Jury Theorem, Bryan C. Mccannon, Paul Walker
Endogenous Competence And A Limit To The Condorcet Jury Theorem, Bryan C. Mccannon, Paul Walker
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
The seminal contribution, known as the Condorcet Jury Theorem, observes that under a specific set of conditions an increase in the size of a group tasked with making a decision leads to an improvement in the group's ability to make a good decision. An assumption under-appreciated is that the competency of the members of the group is assumed to be exogenous. In numerous applications, members of the group make investments to improve the accuracy of their decision making (e.g. pre-meeting efforts). We consider the collective action problem that arises. We show that if competence is endogenous, then increases in the …

Religious-Body Affirmations Protect Body Esteem For Women Who Base Self-Worth On Appearance Or Others’ Approval, Mary Inman, Anna Snyder, Kelvin Peprah
Faculty Publications
Women who base their self-worth on appearance or others’ approval are especially vulnerable to low body esteem when they view media images of thin models. We explored one way religion might mitigate the harmful media effects in these women. We tested whether basing self-worth on appearance or others’ approval was positively related to body comparisons and body surveillance. We tested whether reading religious body-affirming statements enhanced feelings of being loved, which would increase body esteem in women who base self-worth on appearance or others’ approval. This experiment manipulated the type of body-affirming statements (religious, spiritual, control) and assessed women’s body …

The Price Of Strength: Black College Women's Perspectives On The Strong Black Woman Stereotype, Lindsey M. West, Roxanne A. Donovan, Amanda R. Daniel
Faculty Articles
Black feminist scholars posit that the Strong Black Woman stereotype (SBW) is a compelling image that depicts Black women as strong, independent, and self-sacrificing. Research suggests SBW internalization is related to mental and physical health problems. This study asked Black college women open-ended questions on several SBW-related topics. Thematic analysis of approximately 90 participants revealed definitions of SBW, including, strong, independent, hardworking, and caring. Contrary to SBW’s positive perception, the majority of participants reported SBW’s negative effects on their health, highlighting SBW’s paradox. Findings increase awareness of the SBW stereotype for mental health professionals who work with Black college women.
Modeling Children's Organization Of Utterances Using Statistical Information From Adult Language Input, Katie Lynn Walker
Modeling Children's Organization Of Utterances Using Statistical Information From Adult Language Input, Katie Lynn Walker
Theses and Dissertations
Previous computerized models of child language acquisition have sought to determine how children acquire grammatical word categories (GWCs). The current study seeks to determine if statistical structure can be corroborated as a factor in GWC acquisition. Previous studies examining statistical structure have dealt with word order rather than GWC order and only examined an overall success rate. The present study examines how well a computer model of child acquisition of GWCs was able to reorganize scrambled sentences back into the correct GWC order using transitional probabilities extracted from adult language input. Overall, a 50% success rate was obtained, but when …

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Following instructions received from the U.S. Congress in the 2000 National Defense Authorization Act, the Department of Defense prepared an annual report on Chinese military power. This report contains classified and unclassif ied editions. Documenting Chinese military space power developments was one of the provisions in this law’s authorizing language. This article will examine how Chinese military space power documents have been described by the Department of Defense during this report's existence through 2015 and detail how members of Congress and Congressional committee hearing witnesses reacted to these developments in Congressional hearing transcripts and in Congressional debate through Fall 2015.

Inequality Of Happiness: Evidence Of The Compression Of The Subjective-Well-Being Distribution With Economic Growth, John Ifcher, Homa Zarghamee
Economics
The use of Subjective Wellbeing (SWB) measures in economics research has grown markedly (Kahneman and Krueger 2006). This has come about for at least two reasons. First, the measures have been systematically validated as reliable for examining a range of questions. Second, economists have long relied on income as a proxy for wellbeing. However, research shows that there are potentially large slippages between economic indicators and wellbeing (Diener and Seligman 2004). Thus, SWB measures have become an important alternative proxy for wellbeing. Indeed, SWB measures have also caught the attention of policy makers. The OECD launched the Better Life Index …

This will be an interactive session for people who manage an acquisitions budget but don't manage the corresponding personnel who select materials (e.g. subject librarians). How do you encourage appropriate collection development decisions? How do you help revision collection development for long-time employees, or get others to change their workflows to be more efficient? How do you encourage subject librarians to make data-driven decisions? Attendees will work in groups and participate in role playing scenarios to develop strategies for working with colleagues without having explicit authority over those colleagues' work.

Libraries are strong partners in supporting researcher compliance with both funder public access policies and institutional open access policies, and are increasingly involved in research data management activities. The 2008 National Institutes of Health(NIH) Public Access Policy, requiring researchers to deposit copies of all NIH‐funded publications in PubMed Central, provided an opportunity for academic librarians to use their expertise in education and training, copyright, and author rights issues to assist with policy compliance. At the same time, many institutions began conversations about management of research data and adoption of institutional open access (OA) policies, requiring faculty to place copies of their …
