Confidence Through Consultation: Lessons From Northern Ireland's Dpp/Pcsp Model, Kyle F. Kennedy Apr 2016

Confidence Through Consultation: Lessons From Northern Ireland's Dpp/Pcsp Model, Kyle F. Kennedy

Capstone Collection

This project presents a case study of Northern Ireland’s District Policing Partnership (DPP)/Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) model. The case study relies on analysis of statues, government reports, public perception surveys, and governing documents, as well as relevant literature and scholarship. Through analysis of its structure, function, and efficacy of the model, key features of the model will be identified. These key features fit into the three conceptually distinct, but functionally inseparable, threads: buy-in, influence, and composition. The ways in which these three threads interact and impact the legitimacy of the model will be explored, as well as how …

Leadership And Corruption In Governance: A Case Study Of Liberia, Theresa Okpokwu Apr 2016

Leadership And Corruption In Governance: A Case Study Of Liberia, Theresa Okpokwu

Capstone Collection

Writers like Mutasa (2009) and Ebegbulem (2012) argues that Africa is both the poorest continent in the world and one of the richest in terms of natural resources. Consistent with this observation the history of Liberia indicates that corrupt leadership deprives the general population of its fair access to Africa’s rich resources while exacerbating ineffective government bureaucracy and underdevelopment. The bureaucratized central government in turn entrenches corrupt practices which give rise to more serious underdevelopment as well as insurgencies and a possible state failure.

Given this background, this study examines how leadership and corruption in governance affects socioeconomic development. To …

A Comparison Of A Discrete Trial Teaching Procedure And An Incidental Teaching Procedure To Help Children With Developmental Disorders Acquire Sight Word Reading Skills, Adam Golonka Psyd Apr 2016

A Comparison Of A Discrete Trial Teaching Procedure And An Incidental Teaching Procedure To Help Children With Developmental Disorders Acquire Sight Word Reading Skills, Adam Golonka Psyd

All Student Scholarship

Knowing how to read words that are relevant and important has the potential to help individuals with developmental disorders gain independence within both school and community settings. The current study compares the effectiveness of two teaching procedures targeting reading skills in children with developmental disorders. Discrete trial teaching (DTT) is a commonly used method of teaching multiple pre-academic and academic skills to individuals with developmental disorders. It involves a systematic presentation of stimuli, a teaching procedure, and delivery of reinforcement, and is often delivered in a mass trial format. Incidental or naturalistic teaching, on the other hand, takes place in …

Y U No Ansr? A Chronemics Analysis Of Electronic Communications, Lauren Vorderkunz Apr 2016

Y U No Ansr? A Chronemics Analysis Of Electronic Communications, Lauren Vorderkunz

Masters Theses

This paper explores current literature related to chronemics in electronic communication to show that emailing, texting, and social media should be studied in order to understand how one’s self-esteem is affected by these forms of communication to bring about a greater awareness. This research describes a sample study of college students’ reactions to response times using a mixed methods approach, specifically an explanatory sequential model. Through an evaluation of Zimbardo’s (1999) time perspective studies, peer reviewed journal articles, and computer-mediated communication chronemic studies, this paper provides an argument that response times in electronic communications indicate priority and hierarchy between communicators …

Systems Of Access: A Multidisciplinary Strategy For Assessing The Social Dimensions Of Sustainability, Christopher Wolsko, Elizabeth Marino, Thomas J. Doherty, Steve Fisher, Amanda S. Green, Briana Goodwin, Ryan Reese, Andrea Wirth Apr 2016

Systems Of Access: A Multidisciplinary Strategy For Assessing The Social Dimensions Of Sustainability, Christopher Wolsko, Elizabeth Marino, Thomas J. Doherty, Steve Fisher, Amanda S. Green, Briana Goodwin, Ryan Reese, Andrea Wirth

Library Faculty Research

The concept of access to natural resources has been a specific concern of economists and ecologists and is a distinct component in recent models of social sustainability. Using a series of conceptual and empirical examples, this article extends the notion of access broadly to social institutions and sociocultural norms. We argue that access may be usefully construed as an analytic tool that has direct applicability to many sustainability issues as it allows for cross-disciplinary and public engagement. Here the concept of access, linked to Amartya Sen’s theory of capabilities, also makes visible the multi-scaled and interconnected social processes that influence …

Examination Of Common Errors Committed During Eoc Operations: A Content Analysis Study, Michael Kenneth Ryan Apr 2016

Examination Of Common Errors Committed During Eoc Operations: A Content Analysis Study, Michael Kenneth Ryan

Dissertations

One of the key aspects in the learning process, whether it is at an individual or organizational level, is the ability to recognize where errors occur. This is especially important in the field of public safety where small errors can present a serious threat to the safety of first responders and victims of disasters. Up to this point, there has been no systematic study to identify the most common errors that occur during emergency operations center (EOC) activations at the local level of government. Following the introduction, one chapter explores the history of emergency management and the difficulties local jurisdictions …

Communication Apprehension Affects Performance, Andrew C. Petry Apr 2016

Communication Apprehension Affects Performance, Andrew C. Petry

Masters Essays

The research outlined in this work is founded on the notion that every individual is affected by a degree of Communication Apprehension (CA), and the level of apprehension individuals experience has the potential to either positively or negatively influence their ability to perform in the workplace. Specifically, this research examines the relationships between the constructs of communication apprehension, performance anxiety, organizational role, and employee performance. The results found that individuals in sales-related professional roles have a significantly lower level of overall CA than the general population; individuals in customer-facing roles displayed no difference in CA level based on sex, organizational …

Effects Of Data Collection Mode And Response Entry Device On Survey Response Quality, Louisa Ha, Chenjie Zhang, Weiwei Jiang

School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications

Survey has been widely used as a data collection method for both academic andadministrative research. Different modes of conducting surveys have been created andcontinuously developed (Groves, 2011). With the fast-growing penetration of smartphones andother mobile media, survey researchers are faced with the challenge of how to make use of themin surveys while ensuring high data quality and minimizing bias in the coverage (Watson,Zamith, Cavanah & Lewis, 2015). It is especially important to note that Web surveys are nowdisplayed on different devices with different screen sizes and entry methods. So how responseentry devices affect response quality is another important question for …

The Repatriation Experiences Of American Third Culture Kids, Nicole Mazzo Bennett Apr 2016

The Repatriation Experiences Of American Third Culture Kids, Nicole Mazzo Bennett

Educational Studies Dissertations

American families moving abroad are often informed of the initial difficulties they will encounter as residents in a new culture; however, they may not recognize the possible subsequent effects on their children, when returning home to their native cultures during the repatriation process. The children who experience the effect of living in a new culture and eventually repatriating are known as Third Culture Kids (TCK). As globalization and expatriate populations increase, it is important that society becomes aware of the Third Culture community. This qualitative research study focused on analyzing the repatriation transition process of four Adult Third Culture Kids …

What’S Their Story? Using An Online Assessment Tool To Learn About Patron Skills, Amy Honisett

Presentations and Publications

We believe our patrons can use our electronic resources, but international assessment data tell a different story. The US population scores below the international average in problem solving in technology-rich environments, so Multnomah County Library and Portland State University are collaborating on a project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to assess patrons' online abilities and how those abilities map to common library tasks. Results will help inform how online library services are presented and will help ensure computer class content includes meaningful skills.

An Examination Of Student Engagement And Retention In An Honors Progra, Jessica A. Kampfe, Christine Chasek, John Falconer

Counseling Faculty Publications

Honors programs at colleges and universities provide academic and developmental opportunities for high-ability students. Learning communities, defined as a group of students who live together, are connected through membership in a common organization, and take classes together, are often a component of honors programs. Learning communities provide an academic and social community that complements curricular requirements. At the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK), a higher education institution in the Midwest, ninety percent of the freshman honor students live together and ninety-five percent take an honors class in their first semester on campus. The honors program at UNK is classified …

Contributions Of The Jesuits To Human Rights In Mexico: A Case Study Of Center Miguel Agustin Pro Juarez, Luis Arriaga Valenzuela

LMU Theses and Dissertations

In Mexico, as in other parts of the world, human rights violations have deep historical roots. In the forty years before this study, these violations had been increasing, especially with respect to excluded populations and vulnerable groups, such as women, indigenous peoples, migrants, and victims of repression (Center Prodh, 2013). To reverse or at least decrease these conditions, disenfranchised people needed to become aware of their rights within civil society. Toward that end, diverse non-governmental organizations (NGOs) had taken on the task of providing education and strategic practices to disenfranchised people and communities. The Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) had …

Beyond Superfund: How Four Communities Market Outdoor Recreation To Overcome Stigma, Kelley Christensen Apr 2016

Beyond Superfund: How Four Communities Market Outdoor Recreation To Overcome Stigma, Kelley Christensen

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

This paper reports on how four American towns that have active Superfund remediation underway in their communities are attempting to overcome stigma associated with the cleanup in part by promoting outdoor recreation. These towns are located in high-amenity areas and are able to market a bevy of recreational opportunities. This paper analyzes the interviews of eight people (two from each town) and print promotional materials from each community to determine rhetorical marketing techniques employed by each place. Finally, this paper uses quantitative data from a variety of sources to analyze how effective the marketing rhetoric has been in recent years.

Investigating The Intersection Of Whiteness And Racial Allies, Tyler Rife Apr 2016

Investigating The Intersection Of Whiteness And Racial Allies, Tyler Rife

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Through a critical qualitative approach, four focus groups of exclusively white or non-white participants were conducted in order to discover the ways in which individuals enact and navigate whiteness in discussions of racial allies. Further, this study attempted to capture how white and non-white individuals may differ in their approach to this subject matter and in their recommendations for racial allies. Findings revealed that eight themes defined these interactions: “Whiteness”, “Experience & Voice”, “Whitewashing Advocacy”, “Polite Protest”, “(Dis)Comfort”, “White Fragility”, and “The Complexity of Allyship”. The study finds that while whiteness is frequently perpetuated throughout this dialogue and white and …

Do Psychological Contract Perceptions Mediate The Relationship Between Procedural Fairness And Prosocial Behavioral Intentions Under Conditions Of Uncertainty Threat?, Kayla D. Finuf

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Organizational justice and citizenship behaviors are important components that contribute to an organization’s overall effectiveness. Additionally, when an employee enters into a new organization, they form psychological contracts with their employer that consists of elements such as fairness and consultation. This study aimed to integrate the literature on organizational justice, psychological contract, and organizational citizenship behaviors, as well as look at the possible effects uncertainty may play. Specifically, it was proposed that psychological contract would mediate the moderating effects of uncertainty and justice in predicting prosocial behavioral intentions. Results did not support the hypothesis. Interestingly, however, identification with the university …

The Impact Of Alcohol Consumption On Sleep Onset And Rem Latency: A Meta-Analytic Study, Hannah Lane Smith

CUP Undergraduate Research

The purpose of this study was to identify whether sleep onset latency (SOL) and rapid eye movement onset latency (ROL) increased or decreased after consuming alcohol. Researchers, Lobo and Tufik (1997), stated that “acute doses of ethanol significantly change the sleep of healthy volunteers” (p. 52). The current study was based on the foundation of alcohol’s effects on sleep among healthy individuals. The populations studied were alcohol-use dependent individuals and healthy individuals. The following measurements were included: Pittsburgh Sleep Questionnaire Index (PSQI), Schlaffragebogen-A/R (SF-A/R), polysomnography (PSG), and electroencephalogram (EEG). The research design for the present study was a meta-analysis of …
